Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear,
and I was not
rebellious, neither turned away back.
The Lord GOD has opened My ears,
and I have not been
rebellious, nor have I turned back.
I gave my back to the smiters,
and my cheeks to them that
plucked off the hair: I
hid not my face from shame
and spitting.
I offered My back to those who struck Me,
and My cheeks to those who
tore out My
beard. I did not hide My face from
scorn and spittle.
For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint,
and I know that I shall not be
ashamed.
Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.
Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.
Who among you fears the LORD
and obeys the voice of His Servant? Who among you walks in darkness
and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD; let him
lean on his God.
Behold, all ye that
kindle a fire, that compass
yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire,
and in the sparks that ye have
kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Behold, all you who
kindle a fire, who
array yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire
and of the firebrands you have
lit! This is what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in a place of
torment.
Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are
hewn,
and to the hole of the pit whence ye are
digged.
“
Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut,
and to the
quarry from which you were
hewn.
Look unto Abraham your father,
and unto
Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone,
and blessed him,
and increased him.
Look to Abraham your father,
and to
Sarah who gave you birth. When I called him, he was but one; then I blessed him
and multiplied him.
For the LORD shall comfort
Zion: he will comfort all her waste places;
and he will make her wilderness like
Eden,
and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy
and gladness shall be found therein,
thanksgiving,
and the voice of
melody.
Hearken unto me, my people;
and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me,
and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.
Pay attention to Me, My people,
and listen to Me, My nation; for a law will go out from Me,
and My justice will become a light to the nations; I will bring it about quickly.
My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.
My righteousness draws near, My salvation is on the way, and My arms will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look for Me and wait in hope for My arm.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall
vanish away like smoke,
and the earth shall wax old like a garment,
and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever,
and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look at the earth below; for the heavens will
vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment,
and its people will die like gnats. But My salvation will last
forever,
and My righteousness will never fail.
For the
moth shall eat them up like a garment,
and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever,
and my salvation from generation to generation.
For the
moth will
devour them like a garment,
and the worm will eat them like wool. But My righteousness will last
forever, My salvation through all generations.”
Awake,
awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD;
awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut
Rahab,
and wounded the
dragon?
Awake,
awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.
Wake up as in days past, as in generations of old. Was it not You who cut
Rahab to pieces, who pierced through the
dragon?
Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return,
and come with singing unto
Zion;
and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain
gladness and joy;
and sorrow
and mourning shall
flee away.
I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;
“I, even I, am He who comforts you. Why should you be afraid of
mortal man, of a son of man who
withers like grass?
And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens,
and laid the foundations of the earth;
and hast feared continually every day because of the
fury of the
oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy?
and where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
But you have forgotten the LORD, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth. You live in terror all day long because of the
fury of the
oppressor who is bent on destruction. But where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
The
captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed,
and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
The
captive will soon be freed; he will not die in the
dungeon,
and his bread will not be lacking.
And I have put my words in thy mouth,
and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens,
and lay the foundations of the earth,
and say unto
Zion, Thou art my people.
I have put My words in your mouth,
and covered you with the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth,
and to say to
Zion, ‘You are My people.’”
These two things are come unto thee; who shall be
sorry for thee?
desolation,
and destruction,
and the famine,
and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD,
and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of
trembling, even the
dregs of the cup of my
fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of
staggering. From that
goblet, the cup of My
fury, you will never drink again.
But I will put it into the hand of them that
afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over:
and thou hast laid thy body as the ground,
and as the street, to them that went over.
I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”
Awake,
awake; put on thy strength, O
Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the
uncircumcised and the unclean.
Shake off your dust! Rise up
and sit on your throne, O Jerusalem. Remove the chains from your neck, O
captive Daughter of
Zion.
For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold
yourselves for
nought;
and ye shall be redeemed without money.
For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.”
For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down
aforetime into Egypt to
sojourn there;
and the Assyrian
oppressed them without cause.
For this is what the Lord GOD says: “At first My people went down to Egypt to live, then Assyria
oppressed them without cause.
Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for
nought? they that rule over them make them to
howl, saith the LORD;
and my name continually every day is
blasphemed.
And now what have I here? declares the LORD. For My people have been taken without cause; those who rule them
taunt, declares the LORD,
and My name is
blasphemed continually all day long.
The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations; all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.
For ye shall not go out with
haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you;
and the God of Israel will be your rereward.
For you will not leave in a
hurry nor
flee in
haste, for the LORD goes before you,
and the God of Israel is your rear guard.
Behold, My Servant will
prosper; He will be raised
and lifted up
and highly
exalted.
As many were
astonied at thee; his
visage was so
marred more than any man,
and his form more than the sons of men:
Just as many were
appalled at Him— His appearance was disfigured beyond that of any man,
and His form was
marred beyond human likeness—
So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see;
and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
so He will
sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see what they have not been told,
and they will understand what they have not heard.
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant,
and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness;
and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground. He had no stately form or majesty to
attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is
despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows,
and acquainted with grief:
and we
hid as it were our faces from him; he was
despised,
and we esteemed him not.
He was
despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was
despised,
and we esteemed Him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him
stricken,
smitten of God,
and afflicted.
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was
crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
and by His stripes we are
healed.
All we like sheep have gone
astray; we have turned every one to his own way;
and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
We all like sheep have gone
astray, each one has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.
He was
oppressed,
and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was
oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.
He was taken from prison
and from judgment:
and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he
stricken.
By oppression
and judgment He was taken away,
and who can recount His descendants? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was
stricken for the
transgression of My people.
And he made his grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any
deceit in his mouth.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, nor was any
deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the LORD to
bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days,
and the pleasure of the LORD shall
prosper in his hand.
Yet it was the LORD’s will to
crush Him
and to cause Him to suffer;
and when His soul is made a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days,
and the good pleasure of the LORD will
prosper in His hand.
He shall see of the
travail of his soul,
and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant
justify many; for he shall bear their
iniquities.
After the
anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life
and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will
justify many,
and He will bear their
iniquities.
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great,
and he shall divide the
spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death:
and he was numbered with the transgressors;
and he bare the sin of many,
and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Therefore I will
allot Him a portion with the great,
and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death,
and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many
and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing,
and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not
travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song
and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.
Enlarge the place of thy tent,
and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations:
spare not,
lengthen thy cords,
and strengthen thy stakes;
“
Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not hold back.
Lengthen your ropes
and drive your stakes in deep.
For thou shalt break forth on the right hand
and on the left;
and thy seed shall
inherit the Gentiles,
and make the
desolate cities to be inhabited.
For you will spread out to the right
and left; your descendants will dispossess the nations
and inhabit the
desolate cities.
Fear not; for thou shalt not be
ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt
forget the shame of thy youth,
and shalt not remember the reproach of thy
widowhood any more.
Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame; do not be
intimidated, for you will not be
humiliated. For you will
forget the shame of your youth
and will remember no more the reproach of your
widowhood.
For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name;
and thy
Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
For your husband is your Maker— the LORD of Hosts is His name— the Holy One of Israel is your
Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.
For the LORD hath called thee as a woman
forsaken and grieved in spirit,
and a wife of youth, when thou
wast refused, saith thy God.
For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife of one’s youth,” says your God.
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Though the mountains may be removed
and the hills may be
shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you,
and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has
compassion on you.
O thou
afflicted,
tossed with
tempest,
and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors,
and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
I will make your pinnacles of
rubies, your gates of
sparkling jewels,
and all your walls of precious stones.
And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their prosperity.
In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
In righteousness you will be established, far from oppression, for you will have no fear. Terror will be far removed, for it will not come near you.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Behold, I have created the
craftsman who fans the coals into flame
and forges a weapon fit for its task;
and I have created the destroyer to
wreak havoc.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall
prosper;
and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt
condemn. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD,
and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
No weapon formed against you shall
prosper,
and you will
refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD,
and their
vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,
and he that hath no money; come ye,
buy,
and eat;
yea, come,
buy wine
and milk without money
and without price.
“Come, all you who are
thirsty, come to the waters;
and you without money, come,
buy,
and eat! Come,
buy wine
and milk without money
and without cost!
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread?
and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me,
and eat ye that which is good,
and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread,
and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me,
and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.
Incline your ear,
and come unto me: hear,
and your soul shall live;
and I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David.
Incline your ear
and come to Me;
listen, so that your soul may live. I will make with you an
everlasting covenant— My loving devotion promised to David.
Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.
Behold, I have made him a witness to the nations, a leader and commander of the peoples.
Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not,
and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God,
and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath
glorified thee.
Surely you will
summon a nation you do not know,
and nations who do not know you will run to you. For the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, has bestowed glory on you.”
Let the wicked
forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts:
and let him return unto the LORD,
and he will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for he will abundantly
pardon.
Let the wicked man
forsake his own way
and the unrighteous man his own thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have
compassion,
and to our God, for He will freely
pardon.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down,
and the snow from heaven,
and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth,
and maketh it bring forth
and bud, that it may give seed to the
sower,
and bread to the eater:
For just as rain
and snow fall from heaven
and do not return without watering the earth, making it
bud and sprout,
and providing seed to
sow and food to eat,
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please,
and it shall
prosper in the thing
whereto I sent it.
so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will
accomplish what I please,
and it will
prosper where I send it.
For ye shall go out with joy,
and be led forth with peace: the mountains
and the hills shall break forth before you into singing,
and all the trees of the field shall
clap their hands.
You will indeed go out with joy
and be led forth in peace; the mountains
and hills will
burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will
clap their hands.
Instead of the
thorn shall come up the
fir tree,
and instead of the
brier shall come up the
myrtle tree:
and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an
everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
Instead of the thornbush, a
cypress will grow,
and instead of the
brier, a
myrtle will spring up; they will make a name for the LORD, an
everlasting sign, never to be destroyed.”
Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
This is what the LORD says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for My salvation is coming soon, and My righteousness will be revealed.
Blessed is the man that doeth this,
and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it,
and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.
Blessed is the man who does this,
and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without
profaning it
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from His people.”
And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”
For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
For this is what the LORD says: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, who choose what pleases Me and hold fast to My covenant—
Even unto them will I give in mine house
and within my walls a place
and a name better than of sons
and of daughters: I will give them an
everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
I will give them, in My house
and within My walls, a
memorial and a name better than that of sons
and daughters. I will give them an
everlasting name that will not be cut off.
Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him,
and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it,
and taketh hold of my covenant;
And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to Him, to love the name of the LORD,
and to be His servants— all who keep the Sabbath without
profaning it
and who hold fast to My covenant—
Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations.”
Yea, they are
greedy dogs which can never have enough,
and they are
shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.
Like
ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are
shepherds with no
discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain:
Come ye, say they, I will
fetch wine,
and we will fill ourselves with strong drink;
and to
morrow shall be as this day,
and much more abundant.
“Come, let me get the wine, let us
imbibe the strong drink,
and tomorrow will be like
today, only far better!”
The righteous perisheth,
and no man layeth it to heart:
and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
The righteous perish,
and no one takes it to heart;
devout men are swept away, while no one considers that the righteous are guided from the presence of evil.
“But come here, you sons of a
sorceress, you offspring of adulterers
and prostitutes!
Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
Your portion is among the smooth stones of the valley; indeed, they are your lot. Even to them you have poured out a drink offering and offered a grain offering. Should I relent because of these?
Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.
On a high and lofty hill you have made your bed, and there you went up to offer sacrifices.
Behind the doors also
and the posts hast thou set up thy
remembrance: for thou hast discovered
thyself to another than me,
and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed,
and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.
Behind the door
and doorpost you have set up your
memorial.
Forsaking Me, you uncovered your bed; you
climbed up
and opened it wide.
And you have made a
pact with those whose bed you have loved; you have
gazed upon their nakedness.
You went to
Molech with oil
and multiplied your perfumes. You have sent your envoys a great distance; you have descended even to
Sheol itself.
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast
lied,
and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old,
and thou fearest me not?
Whom have you
dreaded and feared, so that you
lied and failed to remember Me or take this to heart? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear Me?
I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.
I will
expose your righteousness
and your works,
and they will not profit you.
When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land,
and shall
inherit my holy mountain;
When you cry out, let your companies of idols deliver you! Yet the wind will carry off all of them, a breath will take them away. But he who seeks refuge in Me will
inherit the land
and possess My holy mountain.”
And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people.
And it will be said, “Build it up, build it up, prepare the way, take every
obstacle out of the way of My people.”
For thus saith the high
and lofty One that inhabiteth
eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high
and holy place, with him also that is of a
contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble,
and to revive the heart of the
contrite ones.
For thus says the One who is high
and lifted up, who inhabits
eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high
and holy place,
and with the
oppressed and humble in spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly
and revive the heart of the
contrite.
For I will not
contend for ever, neither will I be always
wroth: for the spirit should fail before me,
and the souls which I have made.
For I will not
accuse you
forever, nor will I always be
angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.
I was
enraged by his sinful
greed, so I struck him
and hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the desires of his heart.
I have seen his ways,
and will
heal him: I will lead him also,
and restore comforts unto him
and to his mourners.
I have seen his ways, but I will
heal him; I will guide him
and restore comfort to him
and his mourners,
I
create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off,
and to him that is near, saith the LORD;
and I will
heal him.
bringing praise to their lips. Peace, peace to those far
and near,” says the LORD, “
and I will
heal them.”
But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up
mire and dirt.
But the wicked are like the storm-
tossed sea, for it cannot be still,
and its waves
churn up
mire and muck.
“Cry
aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Declare to My people their
transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they seek me daily,
and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness,
and forsook not the
ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
For day after day they seek Me
and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does what is right
and does not
forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”
Wherefore have we fasted, say they,
and thou seest not? wherefore have we
afflicted our soul,
and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure,
and exact all your labours.
“Why have we fasted,
and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves,
and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please,
and you
oppress all your workers.
Behold, ye fast for
strife and debate,
and to
smite with the
fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a
bulrush,
and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him?
wilt thou call this a fast,
and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed,
and to spread out
sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast
and a day acceptable to the LORD?
