Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi;
and to your sisters, Ru-
hamah.
“Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’
Plead with your mother,
plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight,
and her
adulteries from between her breasts;
Rebuke your mother,
rebuke her, for she is not My wife,
and I am not her husband. Let her remove the
adultery from her face
and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Lest I strip her naked,
and set her as in the day that she was born,
and make her as a wilderness,
and set her like a dry land,
and slay her with
thirst.
Otherwise, I will strip her naked
and expose her like the day of her birth. I will make her like a desert
and turn her into a
parched land,
and I will let her die of
thirst.
And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of whoredoms.
For their mother hath played the
harlot: she that conceived them hath done
shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread
and my water, my wool
and my flax, mine oil
and my drink.
For their mother has played the
harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread
and water, wool
and linen, oil
and drink.’
Therefore, behold, I will
hedge up thy way with thorns,
and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.
Therefore, behold, I will
hedge up her path with thorns; I will
enclose her with a wall, so she cannot find her way.
And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
She will pursue her lovers but not catch them; she will seek them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will return to my first husband, for then I was better off than now.’
For she did not know that I gave her corn,
and wine,
and oil,
and multiplied her silver
and gold, which they prepared for
Baal.
For she does not acknowledge that it was I who gave her grain, new wine,
and oil, who
lavished on her silver
and gold— which they crafted for
Baal.
Therefore will I return, and take away my corn in the time thereof, and my wine in the season thereof, and will recover my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness.
Therefore I will take back My grain in its time and My new wine in its season; I will take away My wool and linen, which were given to cover her nakedness.
And now will I discover her
lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
and none shall deliver her out of mine hand.
And then I will
expose her
lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will deliver her out of My hands.
I will also cause all her
mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons,
and her sabbaths,
and all her solemn feasts.
I will put an end to all her
exultation: her feasts, New Moons,
and Sabbaths— all her appointed feasts.
And I will destroy her vines
and her fig trees,
whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me:
and I will make them a forest,
and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
I will destroy her vines
and fig trees, which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers. So I will make them into a
thicket,
and the beasts of the field will
devour them.
And I will visit upon her the days of
Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them,
and she decked herself with her earrings
and her jewels,
and she went after her lovers,
and forgat me, saith the LORD.
I will
punish her for the days of the Baals when she burned incense to them, when she decked herself with rings
and jewelry,
and went after her lovers. But Me she
forgot,” declares the LORD.
Therefore, behold, I will
allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
and speak
comfortably unto her.
“Therefore, behold, I will
allure her
and lead her to the wilderness,
and speak to her tenderly.
And I will give her her vineyards from thence,
and the valley of
Achor for a door of hope:
and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
There I will give back her vineyards
and make the Valley of
Achor into a
gateway of hope. There she will
respond as she did in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.
And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.
In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call Me ‘my Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘my Master.’
For I will take away the names of
Baalim out of her mouth,
and they shall no more be remembered by their name.
For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals; no longer will their names be
invoked.
And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field,
and with the fowls of heaven,
and with the
creeping things of the ground:
and I will break the bow
and the sword
and the battle out of the earth,
and will make them to lie down safely.
On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field
and the birds of the air
and the creatures that
crawl on the ground.
And I will
abolish bow
and sword
and weapons of war in the land,
and will make them lie down in safety.
And I will
betroth thee unto me for ever;
yea, I will
betroth thee unto me in righteousness,
and in judgment,
and in lovingkindness,
and in
mercies.
I will even
betroth thee unto me in faithfulness:
and thou shalt know the LORD.
And I will
betroth you in faithfulness,
and you will know the LORD.”
And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth;
“On that day I will
respond—” declares the LORD— “I will
respond to the heavens,
and they will
respond to the earth.
And the earth shall hear the corn,
and the wine,
and the oil;
and they shall hear
Jezreel.
And I will
sow her unto me in the earth;
and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy;
and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people;
and they shall say, Thou art my God.
And I will
sow her as My own in the land,
and I will have
compassion on ‘No
Compassion.’ I will say to those called ‘Not My People,’ ‘You are My people,’
and they will say, ‘You are my God.’”
Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an
adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods,
and love flagons of wine.
Then the LORD said to me, “Go show love to your wife again, though she is loved by another
and is an
adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods
and offer
raisin cakes to idols.”
So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:
So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech of barley.
And I said unto her, Thou shalt
abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the
harlot,
and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
Then I said to her, “You must live with me for many days; you must not be
promiscuous or belong to another,
and I will do the same for you.”
For the children of Israel shall
abide many days without a king,
and without a prince,
and without a sacrifice,
and without an image,
and without an
ephod,
and without
teraphim:
For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred
pillar,
and without
ephod or
idol.
Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.
Afterward, the people of Israel will return
and seek the LORD their God
and David their king. They will come
trembling to the LORD
and to His goodness in the last days.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a case against the people of the land: “There is no truth, no loving devotion, and no knowledge of God in the land!
Therefore shall the land
mourn,
and every one that dwelleth therein shall
languish, with the beasts of the field,
and with the fowls of heaven;
yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea disappear.
Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
You will
stumble by day,
and the prophet will
stumble with you by night; so I will destroy your mother—
They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
They feed on the sins of My people and set their hearts on iniquity.
And there shall be, like people, like priest:
and I will
punish them for their ways,
and reward them their doings.
And it shall be like people, like priest. I will
punish both of them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.
For they shall eat,
and not have enough: they shall commit
whoredom,
and shall not increase: because they have left off to take
heed to the LORD.
They will eat but not be satisfied; they will be
promiscuous but not multiply. For they have stopped obeying the LORD.
Whoredom and wine
and new wine take away the heart.
Promiscuity, wine,
and new wine take away understanding.
My people ask counsel at their stocks,
and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to
err,
and they have gone a
whoring from under their God.
My people
consult their wooden idols,
and their divining rods inform them. For a spirit of
prostitution leads them
astray and they have played the
harlot against their God.
They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains,
and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks
and poplars
and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit
whoredom,
and your spouses shall commit
adultery.
They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills, under oak,
poplar,
and terebinth, because their shade is pleasant.
And so your daughters turn to
prostitution and your daughters-in-law to
adultery.
I will not
punish your daughters when they commit
whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit
adultery: for themselves are separated with whores,
and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that
doth not understand shall fall.
I will not
punish your daughters when they
prostitute themselves, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit
adultery. For the men themselves go off with prostitutes
and offer sacrifices with
shrine prostitutes. So a people without understanding will come to ruin.
Though thou, Israel, play the
harlot, yet let not Judah
offend;
and come not ye unto
Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-
aven, nor
swear, The LORD liveth.
Though you
prostitute yourself, O Israel, may Judah avoid such guilt! Do not journey to
Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-
aven,
and do not
swear on oath, ‘As surely as the LORD lives!’
The wind hath bound her up in her wings,
and they shall be
ashamed because of their sacrifices.
The
whirlwind has
wrapped them in its wings,
and their sacrifices will bring them shame.
Hear ye this, O priests;
and hearken, ye house of Israel;
and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a
snare on
Mizpah,
and a net spread upon
Tabor.
“Hear this, O priests! Take
heed, O house of Israel! Give ear, O royal house! For this judgment is against you because you have been a
snare at
Mizpah, a net spread out on
Tabor.
And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a
rebuker of them all.
The rebels are deep in slaughter; but I will
chastise them all.
I know Ephraim,
and Israel is not
hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest
whoredom,
and Israel is
defiled.
I know all about Ephraim,
and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now, O Ephraim, you have turned to
prostitution; Israel is
defiled.
They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.
Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God, for a spirit of
prostitution is within them,
and they do not know the LORD.
And the pride of Israel
doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel
and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.
Israel’s
arrogance testifies against them; Israel
and Ephraim
stumble in their iniquity; even Judah stumbles with them.
They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.
They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they do not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.
Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah, the
trumpet in
Ramah; raise the battle cry in Beth-
aven: Lead on, O Benjamin!
Ephraim is
oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.
Ephraim is
oppressed,
crushed in judgment, for he is determined to follow worthless idols.
Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a
moth,
and to the house of Judah as
rottenness.
So I am like a
moth to Ephraim,
and like decay to the house of Judah.
When Ephraim saw his sickness,
and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian,
and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not
heal you, nor cure you of your wound.
When Ephraim saw his sickness
and Judah his wound, then Ephraim turned to Assyria
and sent to the great king. But he cannot cure you or
heal your wound.
For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion,
and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will
tear and go away; I will take away,
and none shall
rescue him.
For I am like a lion to Ephraim
and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will
tear them to pieces
and then go away. I will carry them off where no one can
rescue them.
I will go
and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence,
and seek my face: in their
affliction they will seek me early.
Then I will return to My place until they admit their guilt
and seek My face; in their
affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”
Come,
and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath
torn,
and he will
heal us; he hath
smitten,
and he will bind us up.
Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has
torn us to pieces, but He will
heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bind up our wounds.
After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
So let us know— let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.
O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud,
and as the early
dew it goeth away.
What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your
loyalty is like a morning
mist, like the early
dew that vanishes.
Therefore have I
hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth:
and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.
Therefore I have
hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth,
and My judgments go forth like
lightning.
For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity,
and is
polluted with blood.
And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit
lewdness.
Like raiders who lie in
ambush, so does a band of priests; they murder on the way to
Shechem; surely they have committed
atrocities.
When I would have
healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered,
and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit
falsehood;
and the
thief cometh in,
and the
troop of robbers spoileth without.
When I
heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim will be exposed, as well as the crimes of Samaria. For they practice
deceit and thieves break in;
bandits raid in the streets.
And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have
beset them about; they are before my face.
But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.
They make the king
glad with their wickedness,
and the princes with their lies.
They delight the king with their evil, and the princes with their lies.
They are all hot as an
oven,
and have
devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
All of them are hot as an
oven,
and they
devour their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls upon Me.
Strangers have
devoured his strength,
and he knoweth it not:
yea, gray hairs are here
and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.
Foreigners
consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is
streaked with gray, but he does not know.
And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.
Israel’s
arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to the LORD their God;
despite all this, they do not seek Him.
And they have not
cried unto me with their heart, when they
howled upon their beds: they
assemble themselves for corn
and wine,
and they
rebel against me.
They do not cry out to Me from their hearts when they
wail upon their beds. They
slash themselves for grain
and new wine, but turn away from Me.
Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me.
Although I trained and strengthened their arms, they plot evil against Me.
Set the
trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have
transgressed my covenant,
and trespassed against my law.
Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because the people have
transgressed My covenant
and rebelled against My law.
They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My
approval. With their silver
and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction.
For from Israel was it also: the
workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the
calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
For this thing is from Israel— a
craftsman made it,
and it is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that
calf of Samaria.
For they have sown the wind,
and they shall
reap the
whirlwind: it hath no
stalk: the
bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall
swallow it up.
For they
sow the wind,
and they shall
reap the
whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what
sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would
swallow it up.
Yea, though they have
hired among the nations, now will I gather them,
and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
Though they
hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up,
and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me,
and though they eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.
For Israel hath forgotten his Maker,
and buildeth temples;
and Judah hath multiplied
fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities,
and it shall
devour the palaces thereof.
Israel has forgotten his Maker
and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities,
and it will
consume their citadels.
The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
The
threshing floor
and winepress will not feed them,
and the new wine will fail them.
They shall not dwell in the LORD’S land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria.
They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.
They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be
polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD,
and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be
defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.
What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?
What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast?
For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up,
Memphis shall
bury them: the pleasant places for their silver,
nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
For even if they
flee destruction, Egypt will gather them
and Memphis will
bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles,
and thorns will overrun their tents.
The days of
visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a
fool, the spiritual man is
mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity,
and the great hatred.
The days of punishment have come; the days of
retribution have arrived— let Israel know it. The prophet is called a
fool,
and the inspired man
insane, because of the greatness of your iniquity
and hostility.
The
watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a
snare of a fowler in all his ways,
and hatred in the house of his God.
The prophet is Ephraim’s
watchman, along with my God, yet the
snare of the fowler lies on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God!
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to
Baal-peor,
and separated themselves unto that shame;
and their abominations were according as they loved.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to
Baal-peor,
and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as
detestable as the thing they loved.
As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth,
and from the
womb,
and from the conception.
Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no
pregnancy,
and no conception.
Give them, O LORD: what
wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying
womb and dry breasts.
Give them, O LORD— what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up!
My God will cast them away, because they did not
hearken unto him:
and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
My God will
reject them because they have not obeyed Him;
and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
Their heart is divided; now shall they be found
faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall
spoil their images.
Their hearts are
devious; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars
and demolish their sacred pillars.
The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the
calves of Beth-
aven: for the people thereof shall
mourn over it,
and the priests thereof that
rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.
The people of Samaria will fear for the
calf of Beth-
aven. Indeed, its people will
mourn with its
idolatrous priests— those who
rejoiced in its glory— for it has been taken from them into exile.
It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame,
and Israel shall be
ashamed of his own counsel.
Yes, it will be carried to Assyria as tribute to the great king. Ephraim will be seized with shame; Israel will be
ashamed of its wooden idols.
The high places also of
Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the
thorn and the
thistle shall come up on their altars;
and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us;
and to the hills, Fall on us.
The high places of
Aven will be destroyed— it is the sin of Israel; thorns
and thistles will overgrow their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”
O Israel, thou hast
sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.
Since the days of Gibeah you have
sinned, O Israel,
and there you have remained. Did not the battle in Gibeah overtake the sons of iniquity?
It is in my desire that I should
chastise them;
and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.
And Ephraim is as an
heifer that is taught,
and loveth to
tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to
ride; Judah shall
plow,
and Jacob shall break his clods.
Ephraim is a well-trained
heifer that loves to
thresh; but I will place a yoke on her fair neck. I will
harness Ephraim, Judah will
plow,
and Jacob will break the hard ground.
Sow to
yourselves in righteousness,
reap in mercy; break up your
fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come
and rain righteousness upon you.
Sow for
yourselves righteousness
and reap the fruit of loving devotion; break up your
unplowed ground. For it is time to seek the LORD until He comes
and sends righteousness upon you like rain.
Ye have
plowed wickedness, ye have
reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou
didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.
You have
plowed wickedness
and reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your mighty men,
Therefore shall a
tumult arise among thy people,
and all thy fortresses shall be
spoiled, as Shalman
spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was
dashed in pieces upon her children.
the
roar of battle will rise against your people, so that all your fortresses will be
demolished as Shalman
devastated Beth-arbel in the day of battle, when mothers were
dashed to pieces along with their children.
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.
As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto
Baalim,
and burned incense to
graven images.
But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images.
