And hath seen in a vision a man named
Ananias coming in,
and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
In a vision he has seen a man named
Ananias come
and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
Then
Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
But
Ananias answered, “Lord, many people have told me about this man
and all the
harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.
And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
And now he is here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.”
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
“Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel.
And Ananias went his way,
and entered into the house;
and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight,
and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
So
Ananias went to the house,
and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again
and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales:
and he received sight
forthwith,
and arose,
and was
baptized.
At that instant, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes,
and his sight was restored. He got up
and was
baptized,
And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.
and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And he spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
Saul
promptly began to
proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, declaring, “He is the Son of God.”
But all that heard him were
amazed,
and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem,
and came
hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
All who heard him were
astounded and asked, “Isn’t this the man who
wreaked havoc in Jerusalem on those who call on this name?
And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”
But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
But Saul was
empowered all the more,
and he confounded the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.
And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
After many days had passed, the Jews
conspired to kill him,
But their laying
await was known of Saul.
And they watched the gates day
and night to kill him.
but Saul learned of their plot. Day and night they watched the city gates in order to kill him.
Then the disciples took him by night,
and let him down by the wall in a
basket.
One night, however, his disciples took him
and lowered him in a
basket through a window in the wall.
And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he
assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him,
and believed not that he was a disciple.
When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.
But
Barnabas took him,
and brought him to the apostles,
and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way,
and that he had spoken to him,
and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
Then
Barnabas brought him to the apostles
and described how Saul had seen the Lord, who spoke to him on the road to Damascus,
and how Saul had spoken boldly in that city in the name of Jesus.
And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.
So Saul stayed with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem and speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.
And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus,
and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to
slay him.
He talked
and debated with the
Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill him.
Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea,
and sent him forth to
Tarsus.
When the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea
and sent him off to
Tarsus.
Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea
and Galilee and Samaria,
and were
edified;
and walking in the fear of the Lord,
and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
Then the church throughout
Judea,
Galilee,
and Samaria experienced a time of peace. It grew in strength
and numbers, living in the fear of the Lord
and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.
And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at
Lydda.
As Peter traveled throughout the area, he went to visit the saints in
Lydda.
And there he found a certain man named
Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight years,
and was sick of the
palsy.
And Peter said unto him,
Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise,
and make thy bed.
And he arose immediately.
“
Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you! Get up
and put away your mat.” Immediately
Aeneas got up,
And all that dwelt at
Lydda and Saron saw him,
and turned to the Lord.
and all who lived in
Lydda and Sharon saw him
and turned to the Lord.
Now there was at
Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works
and almsdeeds which she did.
In
Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which is translated as Dorcas), who was always occupied with works of kindness
and charity.
And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
At that time, however, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upper room.
And forasmuch as
Lydda was
nigh to
Joppa,
and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
Since
Lydda was near
Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there
and sent two men to
urge him, “Come to us without delay.”
Then Peter arose
and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber:
and all the widows stood by him
weeping,
and shewing the coats
and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
So Peter got up
and went with them. On his arrival, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood around him,
weeping and showing him the tunics
and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
But Peter put them all forth,
and kneeled down,
and prayed;
and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise.
And she opened her eyes:
and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
Then Peter sent them all out of the room. He
knelt down
and prayed,
and turning toward her body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes,
and seeing Peter, she sat up.
And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
Peter took her by the hand and helped her up. Then he called the saints and widows and presented her to them alive.
And it was known throughout all
Joppa;
and many believed in the Lord.
This became known all over
Joppa,
and many people believed in the Lord.
And Peter stayed for several days in
Joppa with a
tanner named Simon.
A
devout man,
and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much
alms to the people,
and prayed to God
alway.
He
and all his household were
devout and God-fearing. He gave generously to the people
and prayed to God regularly.
He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him,
and saying unto him,
Cornelius.
One day at about the ninth hour, he had a clear vision of an angel of God who came to him
and said, “
Cornelius!”
And when he looked on him, he was afraid,
and said, What is it, Lord?
And he said unto him, Thy prayers
and thine
alms are come up for a
memorial before God.
Cornelius stared at him in fear
and asked, “What is it, Lord?” The angel answered, “Your prayers
and gifts to the poor have ascended as a
memorial offering before God.
And now send men to
Joppa,
and call for one Simon, whose
surname is Peter:
Now send men to
Joppa to call for a man named Simon who is called Peter.
And when the angel which spake unto
Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants,
and a
devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;
When the angel who spoke to him had gone,
Cornelius called two of his servants
and a
devout soldier from among his attendants.
And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to
Joppa.
He explained what had happened
and sent them to
Joppa.
On the
morrow, as they went on their journey,
and drew
nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
The next day at about the sixth hour, as the men were approaching the city on their journey, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
And he became very
hungry,
and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a
trance,
He became
hungry and wanted something to eat, but while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a
trance.
And saw heaven opened,
and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet
knit at the four corners,
and let down to the earth:
He saw heaven open and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
Wherein were all manner of
fourfooted beasts of the earth,
and wild beasts,
and creeping things,
and fowls of the air.
It contained all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, as well as birds of the air.
And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”
And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath
cleansed, that call not thou common.
The voice spoke to him a second time: “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
This was done
thrice:
and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
This happened three times, and all at once the sheet was taken back up into heaven.
Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from
Cornelius had made
enquiry for Simon’s house,
and stood before the gate,
While Peter was
puzzling over the meaning of the vision, the men sent by
Cornelius found Simon’s house
and approached the gate.
And called,
and asked whether Simon, which was
surnamed Peter, were
lodged there.
They called out to ask if Simon called Peter was staying there.
Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from
Cornelius;
and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
So Peter went down to the men and said, “Here am I, the one you are looking for. Why have you come?”
And they said,
Cornelius the
centurion, a just man,
and one that feareth God,
and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was
warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house,
and to hear words of thee.
“
Cornelius the
centurion has sent us,” they said. “He is a righteous
and God-fearing man with a good reputation among the whole Jewish nation. A holy angel
instructed him to request your presence in his home so he could hear a message from you.”
Then called he them in,
and lodged them.
And on the
morrow Peter went away with them,
and certain brethren from
Joppa accompanied him.
So Peter invited them in as his guests.
And the next day he got ready
and went with them, accompanied by some of the brothers from
Joppa.
And the
morrow after they entered into Caesarea.
And Cornelius waited for them,
and had called together his
kinsmen and near friends.
The following day he arrived in Caesarea, where
Cornelius was expecting them
and had called together his relatives
and close friends.
And as Peter was coming in,
Cornelius met him,
and fell down at his feet,
and worshipped him.
As Peter was about to enter,
Cornelius met him
and fell at his feet to worship him.
And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
As Peter talked with him, he went inside and found many people gathered together.
And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a
Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a
Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour;
and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house,
and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying at this, the ninth hour. Suddenly a man in
radiant clothing stood before me
and said, ‘
Cornelius, your prayer has been heard,
and your gifts to the poor have been remembered before God.
Send therefore to
Joppa,
and call
hither Simon, whose
surname is Peter; he is
lodged in the house of one Simon a
tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
Therefore send to
Joppa for Simon, who is called Peter. He is a
guest in the home of Simon the
tanner, by the sea.’
Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
So I sent for you immediately,
and you were kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here in the presence of God to
listen to everything the Lord has
instructed you to tell us.”
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand that God does not show
favoritism,
But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
but welcomes those from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.
That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea,
and began from
Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
You
yourselves know what has happened throughout
Judea, beginning in
Galilee with the baptism that John proclaimed:
How God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Ghost
and with power: who went about doing good,
and healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
how God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power,
and how Jesus went around doing good
and healing all who were
oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews,
and in Jerusalem; whom they
slew and hanged on a tree:
We are witnesses of all that He did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And although they put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree,
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen—
Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
not by all the people, but by the witnesses God had chosen
beforehand, by us who
ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
And he commanded us to
preach unto the people,
and to
testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick
and dead.
And He commanded us to
preach to the people
and to
testify that He is the One appointed by God to judge the living
and the dead.
And they of the
circumcision which believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
All the
circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were
astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
For they heard them speak with tongues,
and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
For they heard them speaking in tongues
and exalting God. Then Peter said,
And he commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to
tarry certain days.
So he ordered that they be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
The apostles
and brothers throughout
Judea soon heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the
circumcised believers took issue with him
But Peter
rehearsed the matter from the beginning,
and expounded it by order unto them, saying,
But Peter began
and explained to them the whole
sequence of events:
I was in the city of
Joppa praying:
and in a
trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners;
and it came even to me:
“I was in the city of
Joppa praying,
and in a
trance I saw a vision of something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners,
and it came right down to me.
Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered,
and saw
fourfooted beasts of the earth,
and wild beasts,
and creeping things,
and fowls of the air.
I looked at it closely and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air.
And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter;
slay and eat.
Then I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter, kill and eat.’
And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into heaven.
And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.
Just then three men sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.
And the spirit
bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me,
and we entered into the man’s house:
The Spirit told me to
accompany them without
hesitation. These six brothers also went with me,
and we entered the man’s home.
And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood
and said unto him, Send men to
Joppa,
and call for Simon, whose
surname is Peter;
He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house
and saying, ‘Send to
Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
He will convey to you a message by which you and all your household will be saved.’
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as He had fallen upon us at the beginning.
When they heard these things, they held their peace,
and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted
repentance unto life.
When they heard this, their objections were put to rest,
and they
glorified God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles
repentance unto life.”
Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice,
and Cyprus,
and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
Meanwhile those scattered by the persecution that began with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia,
Cyprus,
and Antioch, speaking the message only to Jews.
And some of them were men of
Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
But some of them, men from
Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch
and began speaking to the Greeks as well,
proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.
And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
Then
tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem:
and they sent forth
Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
When news of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, they sent
Barnabas to Antioch.
Who, when he came,
and had seen the grace of God, was
glad,
and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would
cleave unto the Lord.
When he arrived
and saw the grace of God, he
rejoiced and encouraged them all to
abide in the Lord with all their hearts.
For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit
and faith,
and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. So for a full year they met together with the church and taught large numbers of people. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
And there stood up one of them named
Agabus,
and signified by the spirit that there should be great
dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of
Claudius Caesar.
One of them named
Agabus stood up
and predicted through the Spirit that a great famine would
sweep across the whole world. (This happened under
Claudius.)
Which also they did,
and sent it to the elders by the hands of
Barnabas and Saul.
This they did, sending their gifts to the elders with
Barnabas and Saul.
And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of
unleavened bread.)
And seeing that this pleased the Jews, Herod proceeded to seize Peter during the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
And when he had
apprehended him, he put him in prison,
and delivered him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
He arrested him
and put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out to the people after the
Passover.
And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.
And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him,
and a light
shined in the prison:
and he
smote Peter on the side,
and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly.
And his chains fell off from his hands.
Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared
and a light
shone in the cell. He
tapped Peter on the side
and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.”
And the chains fell off his wrists.
And the angel said unto him,
Gird thyself,
and bind on thy
sandals.
And so he did.
And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee,
and follow me.
“Get dressed
and put on your
sandals,” said the angel. Peter did so,
and the angel told him, “
Wrap your
cloak around you
and follow me.”
And he went out,
and followed him;
and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
So Peter followed him out, but he was unaware that what the angel was doing was real. He thought he was only seeing a vision.
