And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
And Solomon loved the LORD and walked in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
And the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
Now the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
In
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night:
and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
One night at
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream,
and God said, “Ask,
and I will give it to you!”
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in my father David’s place. But I am only a little child, not knowing how to go out or come in.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a people too numerous to count or number.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may
discern between good
and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people
and to
discern between good
and evil. For who is able to
govern this great people of Yours?”
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request.
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing,
and hast not asked for
thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for
thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for
thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for
yourself or death for your enemies—but you have asked for
discernment to
administer justice—
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise
and discerning heart, so that there has never been nor will ever be another like you.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal.
And if thou
wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes
and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will
lengthen thy days.
So if you walk in My ways
and keep My statutes
and commandments, just as your father David did, I will
prolong your days.”
And Solomon
awoke;
and, behold, it was a dream.
And he came to Jerusalem,
and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD,
and offered up burnt offerings,
and offered peace offerings,
and made a feast to all his servants.
Then Solomon
awoke,
and indeed it had been a dream. So he returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord,
and offered burnt offerings
and peace offerings. Then he held a feast for all his servants.
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
At that time two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also had a
baby. We were alone, with no one in the house but the two of us.
And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him.
So she got up in the middle of the night
and took my son from my side while I was
asleep. She laid him in her
bosom and put her dead son at my
bosom.
And when I rose in the morning to give my child
suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
The next morning, when I got up to
nurse my son, I discovered he was dead. But when I examined him, I realized that he was not the son I had borne.”
And the other woman said,
Nay; but the living is my son,
and the dead is thy son.
And this said, No; but the dead is thy son,
and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
“No,” said the other woman, “the living one is my son
and the dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours
and the living one is mine.” So they
argued before the king.
Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth,
and thy son is the dead:
and the other saith,
Nay; but thy son is the dead,
and my son is the living.
Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
The king continued, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought him a sword,
And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
and the king declared, “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her
bowels yearned upon her son,
and she said, O my lord, give her the living child,
and in no wise
slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
Then the king answered
and said, Give her the living child,
and in no wise
slay it: she is the mother thereof.
Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living
baby to the first woman. By no means should you kill him; she is his mother.”
And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
When all Israel heard of the judgment the king had given, they stood in
awe of him, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to
administer justice.
And these were the princes which he had;
Azariah the son of
Zadok the priest,
and these were his chief officials:
Azariah son of
Zadok was the priest;
Elihoreph
and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha,
scribes;
Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host:
and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the army;
Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
And Azariah the son of
Nathan was over the officers:
and Zabud the son of
Nathan was principal officer,
and the king’s friend:
And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.
Ahishar was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.
And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided
victuals for the king
and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.
Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel to provide food for the king and his household. Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,
And these are their names: The son of Hur, in mount Ephraim:
and these were their names: Ben-hur in the hill country of Ephraim;
The son of Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan:
Ben-deker in Makaz, in Shaalbim, in Beth-shemesh, and in Elon-beth-hanan;
The son of Hesed, in Aruboth; to him
pertained Sochoh,
and all the land of Hepher:
Ben-hesed in Arubboth (Socoh and all the land of Hepher belonged to him);
Baana the son of Ahilud; to him
pertained Taanach
and Megiddo,
and all Beth-shean, which is by Zartanah beneath
Jezreel, from Beth-shean to
Abel-meholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam:
Baana son of Ahilud in Taanach, in
Megiddo,
and in all of Beth-shean next to Zarethan below
Jezreel, from Beth-shean to
Abel-meholah
and on past Jokmeam;
Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth:
Baana son of Hushai in Asher and in Aloth;
Geber the son of
Uri was in the country of
Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the
Amorites,
and of
Og king of
Bashan;
and he was the only officer which was in the land.
Geber son of
Uri in the land of
Gilead, including the territories of Sihon king of the
Amorites and of
Og king of
Bashan. There was also one governor in the land of Judah.
Judah
and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating
and drinking,
and making
merry.
The people of Judah
and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the
seashore,
and they were eating
and drinking
and rejoicing.
And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour,
and threescore measures of meal,
Solomon’s provisions for a single day were thirty cors of fine flour, sixty cors of meal,
Ten fat oxen,
and twenty oxen out of the pastures,
and an hundred sheep, beside harts,
and roebucks,
and fallowdeer,
and fatted fowl.
ten fat oxen, twenty range oxen,
and a hundred sheep, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks,
and fattened poultry.
For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
For Solomon had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates—over all the kingdoms from Tiphsah to
Gaza—
and he had peace on all sides.
And Judah
and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine
and under his fig tree, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, all the days of Solomon.
Throughout the days of Solomon, Judah
and Israel dwelt securely from
Dan to
Beersheba, each man under his own vine
and his own fig tree.
And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his
chariots,
and twelve thousand
horsemen.
Solomon had 4,000 stalls for his
chariot horses
and 12,000 horses.
And those officers provided
victual for king Solomon,
and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.
Each month the governors in turn provided food for King Solomon and all who came to his table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
Barley also
and straw for the horses
and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley
and straw for the
chariot horses
and other horses.
And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
And God gave Solomon wisdom, exceedingly deep insight,
and understanding beyond measure, like the sand on the
seashore.
And Solomon’s wisdom
excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country,
and all the wisdom of Egypt.
Solomon’s wisdom was greater than that of all the men of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.
For he was wiser than all men; than
Ethan the Ezrahite,
and Heman,
and Chalcol,
and Darda, the sons of Mahol:
and his fame was in all nations round about.
He was wiser than all men—wiser than
Ethan the Ezrahite,
and wiser than Heman, Calcol,
and Darda, the sons of Mahol.
And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.
And he spake three thousand
proverbs:
and his songs were a thousand
and five.
Solomon composed three thousand
proverbs,
and his songs numbered a thousand
and five.
And he spake of trees, from the
cedar tree that is in
Lebanon even unto the
hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts,
and of fowl,
and of
creeping things,
and of fishes.
He spoke of trees, from the
cedar in
Lebanon to the
hyssop growing in the wall,
and he taught about animals, birds, reptiles,
and fish.
And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
So men of all nations came to
listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.
And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had
anointed him king in the room of his father: for
Hiram was ever a lover of David.
Now when
Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been
anointed king in his father’s place, he sent envoys to Solomon; for
Hiram had always been a friend of David.
And Solomon sent to
Hiram, saying,
And Solomon relayed this message to
Hiram:
But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither
adversary nor evil
occurrent.
But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side,
and there is no
adversary or
crisis.
And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.
So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name.’
Now therefore command thou that they
hew me
cedar trees out of
Lebanon;
and my servants shall be with thy servants:
and unto thee will I give
hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt
appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to
hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
Now therefore, order that cedars of
Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants,
and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in
logging as the Sidonians.”
And it came to pass, when
Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he
rejoiced greatly,
and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.
When
Hiram received Solomon’s message, he
rejoiced greatly
and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day! He has given David a wise son over this great people!”
And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for:
and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of
cedar,
and concerning timber of
fir.
Then
Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the
cedar and cypress timber.
My servants shall bring them down from
Lebanon unto the sea:
and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt
appoint me,
and will cause them to be discharged there,
and thou shalt receive them:
and thou shalt
accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.
My servants will
haul the logs from
Lebanon to the Sea,
and I will
float them as rafts by sea to the place you
specify. There I will separate the logs,
and you can take them away.
And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.”
So
Hiram gave Solomon
cedar trees
and fir trees according to all his desire.
And Solomon gave
Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household,
and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to
Hiram year by year.
and year after year Solomon would provide
Hiram with 20,000 cors of wheat as food for his household, as well as 20,000 baths of pure olive oil.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him:
and there was peace between
Hiram and Solomon;
and they two made a league together.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace between
Hiram and Solomon,
and the two of them made a treaty.
And king Solomon raised a
levy out of all Israel;
and the
levy was thirty thousand men.
Then King Solomon conscripted a labor force of 30,000 men from all Israel.
And he sent them to
Lebanon ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in
Lebanon,
and two months at home:
and Adoniram was over the
levy.
He sent them to
Lebanon in monthly shifts of 10,000 men, so that they would
spend one month in
Lebanon and two months at home.
And Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor.
And Solomon had
threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens,
and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;
Solomon had 70,000
porters and 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains,
Beside the chief of Solomon’s officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
And the king commanded,
and they brought great stones, costly stones,
and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.
And the king commanded them to
quarry large, costly stones to lay the foundation of the temple with dressed stones.
And Solomon’s builders
and Hiram’s builders did
hew them,
and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber
and stones to build the house.
So Solomon’s
and Hiram’s builders, along with the Gebalites,
quarried the stone
and prepared the timber
and stone for the construction of the temple.
And it came to pass in the four hundred
and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month
Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.
In the four hundred
and eightieth year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, in the month of Ziv, the second month of the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, he began to build the house of the LORD.
And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD, the length thereof was
threescore cubits,
and the breadth thereof twenty cubits,
and the height thereof thirty cubits.
The house that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.
And the
porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house;
and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.
The
portico at the front of the main hall of the temple was twenty cubits long, extending across the width of the temple
and projecting out ten cubits in front of the temple.
And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
He also had narrow windows framed high in the temple.
And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple
and of the
oracle:
and he made chambers round about:
Against the walls of the temple and the inner sanctuary, Solomon built a chambered structure around the temple, in which he constructed the side rooms.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad,
and the middle was six cubits broad,
and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits,
and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.
And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor
axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
The temple was constructed using finished stones cut at the
quarry, so that no hammer or
chisel or any other iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.
The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
The entrance to the bottom floor was on the south side of the temple. A
stairway led up to the middle level,
and from there to the third floor.
So he built the house,
and finished it;
and covered the house with beams
and boards of
cedar.
So Solomon built the temple
and finished it, roofing it with beams
and planks of
cedar.
And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high:
and they rested on the house with timber of
cedar.
He built chambers all along the temple, each five cubits high
and attached to the temple with beams of
cedar.
And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying:
Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou
wilt walk in my statutes,
and execute my judgments,
and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
“As for this temple you are building, if you walk in My statutes, carry out My ordinances,
and keep all My commandments by walking in them, I will
fulfill through you the promise I made to your father David.
And I will dwell among the children of Israel,
and will not
forsake my people Israel.
And I will dwell among the Israelites
and will not
abandon My people Israel.”
So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
So Solomon built the temple and finished it.
And he built the walls of the house within with boards of
cedar, both the floor of the house,
and the walls of the cieling:
and he covered them on the inside with wood,
and covered the floor of the house with planks of
fir.
He lined the interior walls with
cedar paneling from the floor of the temple to the
ceiling,
and he covered the floor with
cypress boards.
And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor
and the walls with boards of
cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the
oracle, even for the most holy place.
He partitioned off the twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with
cedar boards from floor to
ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place.
And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.
And the main hall in front of this room was forty cubits long.
And the
cedar of the house within was carved with knops
and open flowers: all was
cedar; there was no stone seen.
The
cedar paneling inside the temple was carved with gourds
and open flowers. Everything was
cedar; not a stone could be seen.
And the
oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
Solomon also prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there.
And the
oracle in the
forepart was twenty cubits in length,
and twenty cubits in breadth,
and twenty cubits in the height thereof:
and he overlaid it with pure gold;
and so covered the altar which was of
cedar.
The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide,
and twenty cubits high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold,
and he also overlaid the altar of
cedar.
So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold:
and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the
oracle;
and he overlaid it with gold.
So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold.
And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the
oracle he overlaid with gold.
So he overlaid with gold the whole interior of the temple, until everything was completely finished. He also overlaid with gold the entire altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.
And within the
oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.
In the inner sanctuary he made two
cherubim, each ten cubits high, out of olive wood.
And five cubits was the one wing of the
cherub,
and five cubits the other wing of the
cherub: from the
uttermost part of the one wing unto the
uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
One wing of the first
cherub was five cubits long,
and the other wing was five cubits long as well. So the full wingspan was ten cubits.
And the other
cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure
and one size.
The second
cherub also measured ten cubits; both
cherubim had the same size
and shape,
The height of the one
cherub was ten cubits,
and so was it of the other
cherub.
and the height of each
cherub was ten cubits.
And he set the cherubims within the inner house:
and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall,
and the wing of the other
cherub touched the other wall;
and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
And he placed the
cherubim inside the
innermost room of the temple. Since their wings were spread out, the wing of the first
cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the second
cherub touched the other wall,
and in the middle of the room their wingtips touched.
And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.
He also overlaid the
cherubim with gold.
And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
Then he carved the walls all around the temple, in both the inner
and outer
sanctuaries, with carved engravings of
cherubim, palm trees,
and open flowers.
