And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from
Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come,
curse me Jacob, and come,
defy Israel.
And
Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Balak brought me from
Aram, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east. ‘Come,’ he said, ‘put a
curse on Jacob for me; come and
denounce Israel!’
Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they
hired against thee
Balaam the son of Beor of
Pethor of
Mesopotamia, to
curse thee.
For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they
hired Balaam son of Beor from
Pethor in
Aram-naharaim to
curse you.
And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A
Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and
sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and
populous:
and you are to declare before the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering
Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived there and became a great nation, mighty and numerous.
And in the valley, Beth-
aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.
and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served
Baalim, and
Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of
Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and
forsook the LORD, and served not him.
And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals, the Ashtoreths, the gods of
Aram,
Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the
Ammonites and Philistines. Thus they
forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David
slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.
When the Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men.
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that they
stank before David, the children of
Ammon sent and
hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand
footmen, and of king
Maacah a thousand men, and of
Ish-
tob twelve thousand men.
When the
Ammonites realized that they had become a
stench to David, they
hired twenty thousand
Aramean foot soldiers from Beth-rehob and Zoba, as well as a thousand men from the king of
Maacah and twelve thousand men from
Tob.
And the children of
Ammon came out, and put the battle in
array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and
Ish-
tob, and
Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
The
Ammonites marched out and
arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance of the city gate, while the
Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of
Tob and
Maacah were by themselves in the open country.
When
Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in
array against the Syrians:
When
Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and
arrayed them against the
Arameans.
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of
Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
“If the
Arameans are too strong for me,” said
Joab, “then you will come to my
rescue. And if the
Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your
rescue.
And
Joab drew
nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the
Arameans, who fled before him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before
Abishai, and entered into the city. So
Joab returned from the children of
Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
When the
Ammonites saw that the
Arameans had fled, they too fled before
Abishai, and they entered the city. So
Joab returned from fighting against the
Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
And when the Syrians saw that they were
smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, and they came to Helam with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought with him.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the
Arameans arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David
slew the men of seven hundred
chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand
horsemen, and
smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were
smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of
Ammon any more.
When all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the
Arameans were afraid to help the
Ammonites anymore.
For thy servant
vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.
For your servant made a
vow while dwelling in Geshur of
Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in
Hebron.’”
And a
chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the
Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.
A
chariot could be imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. Likewise, they exported them to all the kings of the
Hittites and to the kings of
Aram.
And he was an
adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that
Hadad did: and he
abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
Rezon was Israel’s enemy throughout the days of Solomon, adding to the trouble caused by
Hadad. So Rezon ruled over
Aram with hostility toward Israel.
Then
Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king
Asa sent them to Ben-
hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
So
Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it to his servants and sent them with this message to Ben-
hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest,
anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to
anoint Hazael as king over
Aram.
And Ben-
hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and
chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and
warred against it.
Now Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and
chariots, he marched up, besieged Samaria, and
waged war against it.
And they
slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the
horsemen.
and each one struck down his
opponent. So the
Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-
hadad king of
Aram escaped on
horseback with the cavalry.
And the king of Israel went out, and
smote the horses and
chariots, and
slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the horses and
chariots,
inflicting a great slaughter on the
Arameans.
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go,
strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel and said, “Go and
strengthen your position, and take note what you must do, for in the spring the king of
Aram will come up against you.”
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
Meanwhile, the servants of the king of Aram said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they prevailed over us. Instead, we should fight them on the plains; surely then we will prevail.
And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-
hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
In the spring, Ben-
hadad mobilized the
Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
The Israelites also
mobilized, gathered supplies, and marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped before them like two small flocks of goats, while the
Arameans covered the
countryside.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel
slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand
footmen in one day.
For seven days the armies camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle
ensued, and the Israelites struck down the
Arameans—a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.
Then three years passed without war between Aram and Israel.
And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that
Ramoth in
Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?
who said to his servants, “Do you not know that
Ramoth-
gilead is ours, but we have failed to take it from the hand of the king of
Aram?”
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou
push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the
Arameans until they are finished off.’”
But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his
chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his thirty-two
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his
chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the
chariot.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king was
propped up in his
chariot facing the
Arameans. And the blood from his wound ran out
onto the floor of the
chariot, and that evening he died.
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away
captive out of the land of Israel a little
maid; and she waited on
Naaman’s wife.
At this time the
Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken a young
girl from the land of Israel, and she was serving
Naaman’s wife.
And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of
raiment.
“Go now,” said the king of
Aram, “and I will send you with a letter to the king of Israel.” So
Naaman departed, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of clothing.
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
Then the king of Syria
warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.
Now the king of
Aram was at war against Israel. After
consulting with his servants, he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying,
Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was
sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not
shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?
For this reason the king of
Aram became
enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
Therefore sent he thither horses, and
chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
the king of
Aram sent horses,
chariots, and a great army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
And when they came down to him,
Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said,
Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he
smote them with blindness according to the word of
Elisha.
As the
Arameans came down against him,
Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Please strike these people with blindness.” So He struck them with blindness, according to the word of
Elisha.
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the
Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
And it came to pass after this, that Ben-
hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
Some time later, Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire army and marched up to
besiege Samaria.
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
And they rose up in the
twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the
uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
So they arose at
twilight and went to the camp of the
Arameans. But when they came to the outskirts of the camp, there was not a man to be found.
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the
Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
Wherefore they arose and fled in the
twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their
asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.
So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses
tied, and
asses tied, and the tents as they were.
So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city, saying, “We went to the
Aramean camp and no one was there—not a trace—only
tethered horses and
donkeys, and the tents were
intact.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the
Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
They took therefore two
chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see.
Then the scouts took two
chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the
Aramean army, saying, “Go and see.”
And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their
haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.
And they
tracked them as far as the Jordan, and indeed, the whole way was
littered with the clothing and
equipment the
Arameans had thrown off in
haste. So the scouts returned and told the king.
And the people went out, and
spoiled the tents of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a
shekel, and two measures of barley for a
shekel, according to the word of the LORD.
Then the people went out and
plundered the camp of the
Arameans. It was then that a
seah of fine flour sold for a
shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a
shekel, according to the word of the LORD.
And
Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come
hither.
Then
Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-
hadad king of
Aram was sick, and the king was told, “The man of God has come here.”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
And
Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And
Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
“But how could your servant, a mere dog, do such a
monstrous thing?” said
Hazael. And
Elisha answered, “The LORD has shown me that you will be king over
Aram.”
And king
Joram went back to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at
Ramah, when he fought against
Hazael king of Syria. And
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see
Joram the son of
Ahab in
Jezreel, because he was sick.
So King
Joram returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the
Arameans had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
But king
Joram was returned to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria.) And
Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in
Jezreel.
but King
Joram had returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the
Arameans in the battle against
Hazael their king.) So
Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king, then do not let
anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in
Jezreel.”
Then
Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against
Gath, and took it: and
Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.
At that time
Hazael king of
Aram marched up and fought against
Gath and captured it. Then he decided to attack Jerusalem.
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the
hallowed things that
Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own
hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to
Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.
So King
Joash of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers—
Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent them to
Hazael king of
Aram. So
Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of
Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben-
hadad the son of
Hazael, all their days.
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them continually into the hands of
Hazael king of
Aram and his son Ben-
hadad.
Then
Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD
listened to him because He saw the oppression that the king of
Aram had inflicted on Israel.
(And the LORD gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as
beforetime.
So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel lived in their own homes as they had before.
Jehoahaz had no army left, except fifty
horsemen, ten
chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, because the king of
Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at
threshing.
And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then
Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The
arrow of the LORD’S
deliverance, and the
arrow of
deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt
smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.
“Open the east window,” said
Elisha. So he opened it and
Elisha said, “Shoot!” So he shot. And
Elisha declared: “This is the LORD’s
arrow of victory, the
arrow of victory over
Aram, for you shall strike the
Arameans in Aphek until you have put an end to them.”
And the man of God was
wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt
smite Syria but
thrice.
But the man of God was
angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down
