eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them that were near the king’s person, which were found in the city; and the principal
scribe of the host, who
mustered the people of the land; and
threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the
army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
The Lord hath
trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to
crush my young men: the Lord hath
trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst; He has summoned an
army against me to
crush my young warriors. Like grapes in a winepress, the Lord has
trampled the Virgin Daughter of Judah.
And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the
Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the
roar of many waters, like the voice of the
Almighty, like the
tumult of an
army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

army. Will he
flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and yet escape?’

By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall
shake at the noise of the
horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the
chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.
His multitude of horses will cover you in their dust. When he enters your gates as an
army entering a breached city, your walls will
shake from the noise of cavalry, wagons, and
chariots.
They of Persia and of Lud and of
Phut were in thine
army, thy men of war: they
hanged the shield and
helmet in thee; they set forth thy
comeliness.
Men of Persia,
Lydia, and Put served as warriors in your
army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls; they gave you
splendor.
The men of Arvad with thine
army were upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they
hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have made thy beauty perfect.
Men of Arvad and Helech
manned your walls all around, and the men of Gammad were in your towers. They hung their shields around your walls; they perfected your beauty.
Son of man, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon caused his
army to serve a great service against Tyrus: every head was made
bald, and every shoulder was
peeled: yet had he no wages, nor his
army, for Tyrus, for the service that he had served against it:
“Son of man,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his
army to labor
strenuously against Tyre. Every head was made
bald and every shoulder made raw. But he and his
army received no wages from Tyre for the labor they expended on it.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall take her multitude, and take her
spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his
army.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will give the land of Egypt to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will carry off its wealth, seize its
spoil, and remove its
plunder. This will be the wages for his
army.

prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great
army.
So I
prophesied as He had commanded me, and the breath entered them, and they came to life and stood on their feet—a vast
army.
And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine
army, horses and
horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out with all your
army—your horses, your
horsemen in full
armor, and a great company armed with shields and bucklers, all
brandishing their swords.

All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”
But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:
But one from her family line will rise up in his place, come against the army of the king of the North, and enter his fortress, fighting and prevailing.
But his sons shall be
stirred up, and shall
assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be
stirred up, even to his fortress.
And the king of the south shall be moved with
choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
In a
rage, the king of the South will march out to fight the king of the North, who will raise a large
army, but it will be delivered into the hand of his enemy.
And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.
When the army is carried off, the king of the South will be proud in heart and will cast down tens of thousands, but he will not triumph.
For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

army he will
stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South, who will

A day of darkness and of
gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
a day of darkness and
gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the
dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong
army appears, such as never was of old, nor will ever be in ages to come.
Like the noise of
chariots on the tops of mountains shall they
leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the
stubble, as a strong people set in battle
array.
And the LORD shall utter his voice before his
army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can
abide it?
The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His
army. Indeed, His camp is very large, for mighty are those who obey His command. For the Day of the LORD is great and very
dreadful. Who can
endure it?
But I will remove far off from you the northern
army, and will drive him into a land barren and
desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his
stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
The northern
army I will drive away from you,
banishing it to a barren and
desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its
stench will rise; its foul
odor will
ascend. For He has done great things.
And I will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the
cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the
palmerworm, my great
army which I sent among you.
And I will
encamp about mine house because of the
army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no
oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.
But I will camp around My house because of an
army, because of those who march to and
fro, and never again will an
oppressor overrun My people, for now I keep watch with My own eyes.
This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an
army, and
rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
This man was seized by the Jews, and they were about to kill him when I came with my troops to
rescue him. For I had learned that he is a Roman citizen,
And the number of the
army of the
horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
And the number of mounted troops was two hundred million; I heard their number.
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

wage war against the One seated on the horse, and against His
army.
So he returned afterward to Nineve, both he and all his company of
sundry nations being a very great multitude of men of war, and there he took his ease, and
banqueted, both he and his
army, an hundred and twenty days.
And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him.
And thou shalt declare unto that they prepare for me earth and water: for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine
army, and I will give them for a
spoil unto them:
Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord, and called all the governors and captains, and the officers of the army of Assur;
And he ranged them, as a great army is ordered for the war.
And
plenty of
victual for every man of the
army, and very much gold and silver out of the king’s house.
Then came he down toward the sea coast, both he and his army, and set garrisons in the high cities, and took out of them chosen men for aid.
And he pitched between Geba and Scythopolis, and there he
tarried a whole month, that he might gather together all the carriages of his
army.
Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the
army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the
champaign countries:
And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;
Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be
devoured of all thine
army.
And when the
tumult of men that were about the council was ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the
army of Assur said unto Achior and all the Moabites before all the company of other nations,
And then shall the sword of mine army, and the multitude of them that serve me, pass through thy sides, and thou shalt fall among their slain, when I return.
The next day Holofernes commanded all his
army, and all his people which were come to take his part, that they should remove their camp against Bethulia, to take
aforehand the ascents of the hill country, and to make war against the children of Israel.
Then their strong men removed their camps in that day, and the
army of the men of war was an hundred and seventy thousand
footmen, and twelve thousand
horsemen, beside the
baggage, and other men that were
afoot among them, a very great multitude.
Let our lord now hear a word, that there be not an overthrow in thine army.
Remain in thy camp, and keep all the men of thine army, and let thy servants get into their hands the fountain of water, which issueth forth of the foot of the mountain:
Then the children of
Esau went up with the children of
Ammon, and camped in the hill country over against Dothaim: and they sent some of them toward the south, and toward the east over against Ekrebel, which is near unto Chusi, that is upon the
brook Mochmur; and the rest of the
army of the Assyrians camped in the plain, and covered the face of the whole land; and their tents and carriages were pitched to a very great multitude.
Now therefore call them unto you, and deliver the whole city for a
spoil to the people of Holofernes, and to all his
army.
And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your
army, to declare words of truth; and I will
shew him a way, whereby he shall go, and
win all the hill country, without losing the body or life of any one of his men.
And I will come and
shew it unto thee: then thou shalt go forth with all thine
army, and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee.
So she took the head out of the
bag, and shewed it, and said unto them, behold the head of Holofernes, the chief captain of the
army of Assur, and behold the
canopy, wherein he did lie in his
drunkenness; and the Lord hath
smitten him by the hand of a woman.
Then they shall take their armour, and shall go into their camp, and raise up the captains of the
army of Assur, and shall run to the tent of Holofernes, but shall not find him: then fear shall fall upon them, and they shall
flee before your face.
When the captains of the Assyrians’ army heard these words, they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled, and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp.
Assur came out of the mountains from the north, he came with ten thousands of his
army, the multitude
whereof stopped the torrents, and their
horsemen have covered the hills.
Now when
Seron, a prince of the
army of Syria, heard say that
Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
Now when king
Antiochus heard these things, he was full of
indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong
army.
To wit, that he should send an
army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the
remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their
memorial from that place;
Now when
Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the
valiant men with him, that he might
smite the king’s
army which was at
Emmaus,
Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.
And when he saw that mighty
army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who
didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of
Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;
Shut up this
army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and
horsemen:
Now when
Lysias saw his
army put to flight, and the
manliness of
Judas’ soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die
valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his
army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into
Judea.
Now when the king heard this, he was
angry, and gathered together all his friends, and the captains of his
army, and those that had charge of the horse.
So that the number of his
army was an hundred thousand
footmen, and twenty thousand
horsemen, and two and thirty elephants exercised in battle.
So part of the king’s army being spread upon the high mountains, and part on the valleys below, they marched on safely and in order.
Wherefore all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the
rattling of the
harness, were moved: for the
army was very great and mighty.
Then
Judas and his host drew near, and entered into battle, and there were slain of the king’s
army six hundred men.
Then the king’s
army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king pitched his tents against
Judea, and against mount
Sion.

How also
Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with
horsemen, and
chariots, and a very great
army, was
discomfited by them;

army to he so great were
sore afraid;
whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host,
insomuch as abode of them no more but eight hundred men.
Now when
Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his
army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men,

army with him that seemed
invincible, they were slain in the temple of Nanea by the
deceit of Nanea’s priests.

detestable ringleader Apollonius with an
army of two and twenty thousand, commanding him to
slay all those that were in their best age, and to sell the women and the younger sort:
Now when word was brought unto
Judas of Nicanor’s coming, and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the
army was at hand,
Thus when he had made them bold with these words, and ready to die for the law and the country, he divided his army into four parts;
So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man, and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell away, and the
filthiness of his smell was
noisome to all his
army.
But considering that even my father, at what time he led an army into the high countries. appointed a successor,
Others likewise ascending after them, whiles they were
busied with them that were within, burnt the towers, and
kindling fires burnt the blasphemers alive; and others broke open the gates, and, having received in the rest of the
army, took the city,
And Maccabeus ranged his
army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against
Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred
horsemen.
And now, when as all looked what should be the trial, and the enemies were already come near, and the
army was set in
array, and the beasts conveniently placed, and the
horsemen set in wings,
