And they turned and went up by the way of
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the
battle at Edrei.
Then they turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole army came out to meet them in
battle at Edrei.
Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”
And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the
trumpets to blow in his hand.
And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into
battle, along with
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the
trumpets for signaling.
And Moses was
wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the
battle.
But Moses was
angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the
battle.
And
Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the
battle, This is the
ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;
Then
Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into
battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:
And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
Then divide the
captives between the troops who went out to
battle and the rest of the congregation.
And
levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to
battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the
beeves, and of the
asses, and of the sheep:
Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into
battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle,
donkeys, or sheep.
And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,
Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will arm
yourselves before the LORD for
battle,
But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.
But your servants are
equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the
battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
And Moses said unto them, If the children of
Gad and the children of
Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to
battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of
Gilead for a possession:
And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, with every man armed for
battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of
Gilead as a possession.
And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in
battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river
Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and
contend with him in
battle.
“Arise, set out, and cross the
Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and
engage him in
battle.
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
Then we turned, and went up the way to
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to
battle at Edrei.
Then we turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole army came out to meet us in
battle at Edrei.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over, armed for
battle,
ahead of your brothers, the Israelites.
When thou goest out to
battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
And it shall be, when ye are come
nigh unto the
battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto
battle against your enemies: let not your hearts
faint, fear not, and do not
tremble, neither be ye
terrified because of them;
saying to them, “Hear, O Israel,
today you are going into
battle with your enemies. Do not be
fainthearted or afraid; do not be
alarmed or
terrified because of them.
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the
battle, and another man
dedicate it.
Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in
battle and another man
dedicate it.
And what man is he that hath planted a
vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the
battle, and another man eat of it.
Has any man planted a
vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him return home, or he may die in
battle and another man enjoy its fruit.
And what man is there that hath
betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the
battle, and another man take her.
Has any man become
pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in
battle and another man marry her.”
When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.
If you build a new house, you are to construct a railing around your roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls from it.
And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and
Og the king of
Bashan, came out against us unto
battle, and we
smote them:
When you reached this place, Sihon king of
Heshbon and
Og king of
Bashan came out against us in
battle, but we defeated them.
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for
battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
And the children of
Reuben, and the children of
Gad, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh crossed over before the Israelites, armed for
battle as Moses had
instructed them.
About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto
battle, to the plains of
Jericho.
About 40,000 troops armed for
battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of
Jericho.
And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had commanded the people: “Do not give a
battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to
battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in
battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the
spear that is in thy hand toward
Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the
spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold out your
battle lance toward
Ai, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out his
battle lance toward
Ai,
For Joshua drew not his hand back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his
battle lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the
Hivites the inhabitants of
Gibeon: all other they took in
battle.
No city made peace with the Israelites except the
Hivites living in
Gibeon; all others were taken in
battle.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in
battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in
battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in
battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
Zebulun was a people who risked their lives;
Naphtali, too, on the heights of the
battlefield.
And
Gideon the son of
Joash returned from
battle before the sun was up,
But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
And from their cities they came together at Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites.
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD replied.
And the men of Israel went out to
battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in
array to fight against them at Gibeah.
And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took up their battle positions at Gibeah.
And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
And the Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down 22,000 Israelites on the battlefield that day.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their
battle again in
array in the place where they put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their
battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to
battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for
battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to
battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to
battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the
battle was
sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Then 10,000 select men from all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the
battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was upon them.
And when the men of Israel retired in the
battle, Benjamin began to
smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down before us, as in the first
battle.
the men of Israel would turn in the battle. When the Benjamites had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They are defeated before us as in the first battle.”
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in
battle and camped at
Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
And the Philistines put themselves in
array against Israel: and when they joined
battle, Israel was
smitten before the Philistines: and they
slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
The Philistines
arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the
battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the
battlefield.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the
battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his head.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just come from the
battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to
battle against Israel: but the LORD
thundered with a great
thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and
discomfited them; and they were
smitten before Israel.
As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering. But that day the LORD
thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.”
So it came to pass in the day of
battle, that there was neither sword nor
spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was there found.
So on the day of
battle not a sword or
spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the
battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the
battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the sword against his
neighbor.
Likewise all the men of Israel which had
hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the
battle.
When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were
fleeing, they also joined Saul and
Jonathan in the
battle.
So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the
battle passed over unto Beth-
aven.
So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the
battle moved on beyond Beth-
aven.
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the
battle in
array against the Philistines.
Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah,
arraying themselves for
battle against the Philistines.
And he stood and
cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your
battle in
array? am not I a
Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
And
Goliath stood and
shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and
array yourselves for
battle? Am I not a
Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me.
And the three eldest sons of
Jesse went and followed Saul to the
battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the
battle were Eliab the first born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
The three older sons of
Jesse had followed Saul into
battle: The
firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as
Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the
trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and
shouted for the
battle.
So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as
Jesse had
instructed him. He reached the camp as the army was marching out to its position and
shouting the
battle cry.
For Israel and the Philistines had put the
battle in
array, army against army.
And Israel and the Philistines
arrayed in formation against each other.
And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and
saluted his brethren.
Then David left his supplies in the care of the
quartermaster and ran to the
battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the
battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and
spear: for the
battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or
spear that the LORD saves; for the
battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
And it came to pass, when the
Philistine arose, and came and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the
Philistine.
As the
Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the
battle line to meet him.
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back.
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S
battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s
battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for
battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the
battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s
battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
