Then the congregation shall judge
between the
slayer and the
revenger of blood according to these judgments:
then the congregation must judge
between the
slayer and the
avenger of blood according to these ordinances.
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea,
between Paran, and Tophel, and
Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—in the Arabah opposite Suph—
between Paran and Tophel,
Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
And the little ones you said would become
captives—your children who on that day did not know good from evil—will enter the land that I will give them, and they will possess it.
So we abode in the valley over against Beth-peor.
So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
On this side Jordan, in the valley over against
Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt at
Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel
smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing
Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
(I stood
between the LORD and you at that time, to
shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. And He said:
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as
frontlets between thine eyes.
Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as
frontlets between your eyes.
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds;
tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut
yourselves, nor make any
baldness between your eyes for the dead.
You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut
yourselves or
shave your foreheads on behalf of the dead,
If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment,
between blood and blood,
between plea and
plea, and
between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose;
If a case is too difficult for you to judge, whether the controversy within your gates is regarding
bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults, you must go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD, before the priests and judges who are in office at that time.
And what man is there that hath
betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Has any man become
pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”
If a
damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
If there is a virgin
pledged in marriage to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her,
But if a man find a
betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
But if the man encounters a
betrothed woman in the open country, and he overpowers her and lies with her, only the man who has done this must die.
When he found her in the field, the
betrothed woman
cried out, but there was no one to save her.
If a man find a
damsel that is a virgin, which is not
betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
If a man encounters a virgin who is not
pledged in marriage, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered,
If there be a controversy
between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall
justify the righteous, and
condemn the wicked.
If there is a dispute
between men, they are to go to court to be judged, so that the innocent may be
acquitted and the guilty condemned.
Thou shalt
betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a
vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
You will be
pledged in marriage to a woman, but another man will
violate her. You will build a house but will not live in it. You will plant a
vineyard but will not enjoy its fruit.
And toward her young one that cometh out from
between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness,
wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
the
afterbirth that comes from
between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within your gates.
And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.
Concerning Benjamin he said: “May the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him; God shields him all day long, and upon His shoulders he rests.”
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against
Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his
sepulchre unto this day.
And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab facing
Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows the
location of his grave.
Yet there shall be a space
between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits
between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside
Beth-
aven, on the east side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is near
Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out
Ai.
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode
between Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that night among the people.
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of
ambush and lay in wait
between Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley
between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley
between them and the city.
And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in
ambush between Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of the city.
Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set up an
ambush between Bethel and
Ai, to the west of the city.
And there was not a man left in
Ai or
Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Not a man was left in
Ai or
Bethel who did not go out after Israel, leaving the city wide open while they pursued Israel.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And the LORD
discomfited them before Israel, and
slew them with a great slaughter at
Gibeon, and
chased them along the way that goeth up to
Beth-horon, and
smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at
Gibeon, pursued them along the
ascent to
Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to
Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to
Beth-jeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdoth-
pisgah:
as well as the Arabah east of the Sea of Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), eastward through
Beth-jeshimoth, and southward below the slopes of
Pisgah.
The king of Makkedah, one; the king of
Bethel, one;

And from
Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and
Betonim; and from
Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and
Betonim, and from
Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
And in the valley,
Beth-
aram, and
Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.
and in the valley,
Beth-haram,
Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
And the border went up to
Beth-hogla, and passed along by the north of
Beth-arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of
Reuben:
The northern border started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, went up to
Beth-hoglah, proceeded north of
Beth-arabah, and went up to the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount
Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went down to
Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah:
The border
curled westward from Baalah to Mount
Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), went down to
Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.
And Hazar-gaddah, and Heshmon, and
Beth-
palet,
Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet,
And Gederoth,
Beth-
dagon, and Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities with their villages:
Gederoth,
Beth-
dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah—sixteen cities, along with their villages.
And Janum, and Beth-tappuah, and Aphekah,
Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,
Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor,

In the wilderness, Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah,
These were in the wilderness:
And Nibshan, and the city of Salt, and En-gedi; six cities with their villages.
Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah, Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En-gedi—six cities, along with their villages.
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the water of
Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the waters of
Jericho on the east, through the wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into the hill country of
Bethel.
And goeth out from
Bethel to
Luz, and passeth along unto the borders of Archi to Ataroth,
It went on from
Bethel (that is,
Luz) and proceeded to the border of the Archites in Ataroth.
And goeth down westward to the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast of
Beth-horon the
nether, and to
Gezer: and the goings out thereof are at the sea.
Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites as far as the border of Lower
Beth-horon and on to
Gezer, and it ended at the Sea.
And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;
This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar in the east to Upper Beth-horon
And
Manasseh had in
Issachar and in Asher
Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.
Within
Issachar and Asher,
Manasseh was assigned
Beth-shean, Ibleam,
Dor (that is, Naphath),
Endor, Taanach, and
Megiddo, each with their surrounding settlements.
And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the
Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have
chariots of iron, both they who are of
Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of
Jezreel.
“The hill country is not enough for us,” they replied, “and all the
Canaanites who live in the valley have iron
chariots, both in
Beth-shean with its towns and in the Valley of
Jezreel.”
And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Their
allotted territory lay
between the tribes of Judah and Joseph:
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of
Jericho on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of
Beth-
aven.
On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho, headed west through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of
Beth-
aven.
And the border went over from thence toward
Luz, to the side of
Luz, which is
Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-
adar, near the hill that lieth on the south side of the
nether Beth-horon.
From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of
Luz (that is,
Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower
Beth-horon.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth before
Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing
Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward, and went down unto Arabah:
Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah and went down into the valley.
And the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.
The border continued to the northern slope of Beth-hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan. This was the southern border.
Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were
Jericho, and
Beth-hoglah, and the valley of Keziz,
These were the cities of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin:
And
Beth-arabah, and Zemaraim, and
Bethel,
And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,

And Kattath, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and

It also included Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and
Bethlehem. There were twelve cities, along with their villages.
And Remeth, and En-gannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez;
Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez.
And the coast reacheth to
Tabor, and Shahazimah, and
Beth-shemesh; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages.
The border reached
Tabor, Shahazumah, and
Beth-shemesh, and ended at the Jordan. There were sixteen cities, along with their villages.
And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,
Their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph,
And turneth toward the
sunrising to
Beth-
dagon, and reacheth to
Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north side of
Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to
Cabul on the left hand,
then turned eastward toward
Beth-
dagon, touched
Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah-el, and went north to
Beth-emek and Neiel, passing
Cabul on the left.
And Iron, and Migdal-el, Horem, and
Beth-anath, and
Beth-shemesh;
nineteen cities with their villages.
Iron, Migdal-el, Horem,
Beth-anath, and
Beth-shemesh. There were
nineteen cities, along with their villages.
And
Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and
Beth-shemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.
Ain, Juttah, and
Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.
And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs; four cities.
Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
For the LORD hath made Jordan a border
between us and you, ye children of
Reuben and children of
Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.
For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD!’ So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the
replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness
between us and you.’
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness
between us that the LORD is God.
So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
And when they
cried unto the LORD, he put darkness
between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
So your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness
between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
And the house of Joseph, they also went up against
Bethel: and the LORD was with them.
The house of Joseph also attacked
Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
And the house of Joseph sent to
descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was
Luz.)
Neither did
Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of
Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns: but the
Canaanites would dwell in that land.
At that time
Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of
Beth-shean, Taanach,
Dor, Ibleam,
Megiddo, and their villages; for the
Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
Neither did
Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of
Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of
Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of
Beth-shemesh and of
Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants of
Beth-shemesh and
Beth-anath. So the Naphtalites also lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of
Beth-shemesh and
Beth-anath served them as forced laborers.
And she dwelt under the palm tree of
Deborah between Ramah and
Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
And she would sit under the Palm of
Deborah between Ramah and
Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, where the Israelites would go up to her for judgment.
Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of
Heber the Kenite: for there was peace
between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
Meanwhile, Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of
Heber the Kenite, because there was peace
between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to
Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to
Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto
Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto
Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as
Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as
Beth-barah.
And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the
gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim
better than the
vintage of Abi-ezer?
But
Gideon answered them, “Now what have I accomplished compared to you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim
better than the
grape harvest of Abiezer?
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of
Shechem, Whether is
better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask all the leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it
better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, The LORD be witness
between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
And the elders of
Gilead said to
Jephthah, “The LORD is our witness if we do not do as you say.”
And now art thou any thing
better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever
strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
Are you now so much
better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever
contend with Israel or fight against them?
Wherefore I have not
sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day
between the children of Israel and the children of
Ammon.
I have not
sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by
waging war against me. May the LORD, the Judge, decide
today between the Israelites and the
Ammonites.”
And after him Ibzan of
Bethlehem judged Israel.
Then died Ibzan, and was buried at
Bethlehem.
Then Ibzan died, and he was buried in
Bethlehem.
And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of
Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
And the Spirit of the LORD began to
stir him at Mahaneh-
dan,
between Zorah and Eshtaol.
And
Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a
firebrand in the midst
between two tails.
Then
Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes. And he took torches, turned the foxes tail-to-tail, and fastened a
torch between each pair of tails.
And it came to pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they set him
between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him
between the pillars.
Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him
between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him
between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
And there was a young man out of
Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a
Levite, and he
sojourned there.
And there was a young
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah who had been residing within the clan of Judah.
