And the man departed out of the city from
Bethlehemjudah to
sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of
Micah, as he journeyed.
This man left the city of
Bethlehem in Judah to settle where he could find a place. And as he traveled, he came to
Micah’s house in the hill country of Ephraim.
And
Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a
Levite of
Bethlehemjudah, and I go to
sojourn where I may find a place.
“Where are you from?”
Micah asked him. “I am a
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah,” he replied, “and I am on my way to settle wherever I can find a place.”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no alliance with
anyone; it was in a valley near
Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of
Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to
Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in
Bethlehem in Judah. After she had been there four months,
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD replied.
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and
wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
The men of Israel had arranged a signal with the men in
ambush: When they sent up a great cloud of smoke from the city,
And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and
wept sore;
So the people came to
Bethel and sat there before God until evening, lifting up their voices and
weeping bitterly.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of
Bethlehemjudah went to
sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from
Bethlehem in Judah, with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the land of Moab.
And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife
Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of
Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was
Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from
Bethlehem in Judah, and they entered the land of Moab and settled there.
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
So
Naomi returned, and
Ruth the
Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to
Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
So
Naomi returned from the land of Moab with her daughter-in-law
Ruth the
Moabitess. And they arrived in
Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
And behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they replied.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a
nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is
better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
He will renew your life and
sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is
better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
Then said Elkanah her husband to her,
Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart
grieved? am not I
better to thee than ten sons?
“
Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so
grieved? Am I not
better to you than ten sons?”
So the people sent to
Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth
between the cherubims: and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
So the people sent men to
Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned
between the
cherubim. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to
Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward
Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of
Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of
Beth-shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward
Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of
Beth-shemesh.
And they of
Beth-shemesh were
reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and
rejoiced to see it.
Now the people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they were overjoyed at the sight.
And the
cart came into the field of Joshua, a
Beth-
shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they
clave the wood of the
cart, and offered the
kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.
The
cart came to the field of Joshua of
Beth-shemesh and stopped there near a large rock. The people
chopped up the
cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the
coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of
Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the
Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of
Beth-shemesh.
And he
smote the men of
Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he
smote of the people fifty thousand and
threescore and ten men: and the people
lamented, because the LORD had
smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
But God struck down some of the people of
Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men, and the people
mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.
And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
The men of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”
And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and
smote them, until they came under
Beth-
car.
Then the men of Israel charged out of
Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, striking them down all the way to an area below
Beth-
car.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.
Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up
between Mizpah and Shen. He named it
Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from
Ekron even unto
Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace
between Israel and the
Amorites.
The cities from
Ekron to
Gath, which the Philistines had taken, were restored to Israel, who also delivered the surrounding territory from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace
between the Israelites and the
Amorites.
And he went from year to year in circuit to
Bethel, and
Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
Every year he would go on a circuit from
Bethel to
Gilgal to
Mizpah, judging Israel in all these places.
Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of
Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to
Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a
bottle of wine:
Then you will go on from there until you come to the Oak of
Tabor. Three men going up to God at
Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine.
Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel;
whereof two thousand were with Saul in
Michmash and in mount
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at
Michmash and in the hill country of
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And the rest of the troops he sent away, each to his own home.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand
horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward from
Beth-
aven.
Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand
chariots, six thousand
horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the
seashore. They went up and camped at
Michmash, east of
Beth-
aven.
And another company turned the way to
Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of
Zeboim toward the wilderness.
another toward
Beth-horon, and the third down the border road overlooking the Valley of
Zeboim facing the wilderness.
And
between the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.
So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto
Beth-
aven.
So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond
Beth-
aven.
How much more, if
haply the people had eaten freely to day of the
spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
How much
better it would have been if the troops had eaten freely
today from the
plunder they took from their enemies! Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been much greater?”
And Saul said, Cast lots
between me and
Jonathan my son. And
Jonathan was taken.
Then Saul said, “Cast the lot
between me and my son
Jonathan.” And
Jonathan was selected.
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is
better than sacrifice, and to
hearken than the fat of rams.
But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is
better than sacrifice, and
attentiveness is
better than the fat of rams.
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has
torn the kingdom of Israel from you
today and has given it to your
neighbor who is
better than you.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou
mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to
Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to
Jesse of
Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to
Bethlehem. And the elders of the town
trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou
peaceably?
So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to
Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they
trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another, with the valley between them.
And he had
greaves of brass upon his legs, and a
target of brass
between his shoulders.
and he had
armor of bronze on his legs and a
javelin of bronze
slung between his shoulders.
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of
Bethlehemjudah, whose name was
Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
Now David was the son of a man named
Jesse, an Ephrathite from
Bethlehem of Judah who had eight sons in the days of Saul. And
Jesse was old and well along in years.
But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at
Bethlehem.
but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in
Bethlehem.
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant
Jesse the
Bethlehemite.
“Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul. “I am the son of your servant
Jesse of
Bethlehem,” David replied.
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step
between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step
between me and death.”
If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to
Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David
urgently requested my permission to
hurry to
Bethlehem, his hometown, because there is an annual sacrifice for his whole clan.’
And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.
And as for the matter you and I have discussed, the LORD is a witness
between you and me
forever.”
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be
between me and thee, and
between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness
between you and me, and
between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
The LORD judge
between me and thee, and the LORD
avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
May the LORD judge
between you and me, and may the LORD take
vengeance on you, but my hand will never be against you.
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge
between me and thee, and see, and
plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
May the LORD be our judge and decide
between you and me. May He take notice and
plead my case and deliver me from your hand.”
Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill
afar off; a great space being
between them:
Then David crossed to the other side and stood
atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf
between them.
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing
better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
David, however, said to himself, “One of these days now I will be swept away by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop searching for me all over Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What
better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
To them which were in
Bethel, and to them which were in south
Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,
And they put his armour in the house of
Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of
Beth-shan.
They put his
armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and hung his body on the wall of
Beth-shan.
All the
valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of
Beth-shan, and came to
Jabesh, and burnt them there.
all their men of
valor set out, journeyed all night, and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of
Beth-shan. When they arrived at
Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
And they took up
Asahel, and buried him in the
sepulchre of his father, which was in
Bethlehem. And
Joab and his men went all night, and they came to
Hebron at break of day.
Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.
Now the war
between the house of Saul and the house of David was
protracted. And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
And it came to pass, while there was war
between the house of Saul and the house of David, that
Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
During the war
between the house of Saul and the house of David,
Abner had continued to
strengthen his position in the house of Saul.
And David sent messengers to
Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I
espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
Then David sent messengers to say to
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me back my wife, Michal, whom I
betrothed to myself for a hundred
Philistine foreskins.”
And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
And he and all his troops set out for Baale of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name— the name of the LORD of Hosts, who is enthroned
between the
cherubim that are on it.
And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.
And from Betah and Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a large amount of bronze.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that they
stank before David, the children of
Ammon sent and
hired the Syrians of
Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand
footmen, and of king
Maacah a thousand men, and of
Ish-
tob twelve thousand men.
When the
Ammonites realized that they had become a
stench to David, they
hired twenty thousand
Aramean foot soldiers from
Beth-rehob and Zoba, as well as a thousand men from the king of
Maacah and twelve thousand men from
Tob.
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be
better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
And
Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is
better than the counsel of
Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of
Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon
Absalom.
But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is
better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is
better for now if you support us from the city.”
And
Absalom met the servants of David. And
Absalom rode upon a
mule, and the
mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up
between the heaven and the earth; and the
mule that was under him went away.
Now
Absalom was riding on his
mule when he met the servants of David, and as the
mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,
Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The
mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
And David sat
between the two gates: and the
watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Now David was sitting
between the two gates when the
watchman went up to the roof of the
gateway by the wall, looked out, and saw a man running alone.
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto
Abel, and to
Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.
Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to
Abel-
beth-
maacah and through the entire region of the Berites, who gathered together and followed him.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of
Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.
But the king
spared Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was
between them,
between David and
Jonathan the son of Saul.
Now the king
spared Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD
between David and
Jonathan son of Saul.
And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of
Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, which had
stolen them from the street of
Beth-shan, where the Philistines had
hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
he went and took the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, who had
stolen them from the public square of
Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck down Saul at
Gilboa.
And there was again a battle in
Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a
Bethlehemite,
slew the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at
Gob, and Elhanan son of
Jair the
Bethlehemite killed the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And moreover the king’s servants came to
bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon
better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
The king’s servants have also gone to
congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king has bowed in worship on his bed,
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and
better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and
better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may
discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people and to
discern between good and evil. For who is able to
govern this great people of Yours?”
The son of Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan:
Ben-deker in Makaz, in Shaalbim, in Beth-shemesh, and in Elon-beth-hanan;
Baana the son of Ahilud; to him
pertained Taanach and
Megiddo, and all
Beth-shean, which is by Zartanah beneath
Jezreel, from
Beth-shean to
Abel-meholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam:
Baana son of Ahilud in Taanach, in
Megiddo, and in all of
Beth-shean next to Zarethan below
Jezreel, from
Beth-shean to
Abel-meholah and on past Jokmeam;
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace
between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.
And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace
between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.
And the work of the bases was on this manner: they had borders, and the borders were between the ledges:
This was the design of the stands: They had side panels attached to uprights,
And on the borders that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubims: and upon the ledges there was a base above: and beneath the lions and oxen were certain additions made of thin work.
and on the panels
between the uprights were lions, oxen, and
cherubim. On the uprights was a
pedestal above, and below the lions and oxen were
wreaths of
beveled work.
In the plain of Jordan did the king cast them, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zarthan.
The king had them cast in clay molds in the plain of the Jordan between Succoth and Zarethan.
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
So Solomon rebuilt
Gezer, Lower
Beth-horon,
And he set the one in
Bethel, and the other put he in
Dan.
