And
Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the
fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in
Bethel, sacrificing unto the
calves that he had made: and he placed in
Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast on the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in
Bethel to sacrifice to the
calves he had set up, and he
installed priests in
Bethel for the high places he had set up.
So he offered upon the altar which he had made in
Bethel the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
On the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing,
Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar he had set up in
Bethel. So he ordained a feast for the Israelites, offered sacrifices on the altar, and burned incense.
And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto
Bethel: and
Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
Suddenly, as
Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God from Judah to
Bethel by the word of the LORD.
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to
Bethel.
So the man of God went another way and did not return by the way he had come to
Bethel.
Now there dwelt an old prophet in
Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
Now a certain old prophet was living in
Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel. They also told their father the words that the man had spoken to the king.
For the saying which he
cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
for the message that he
cried out by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely come to pass.”
And there was war
between the houses of
Rehoboam and
Jeroboam all the days of Abijam’s life.
Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war
between Abijam and
Jeroboam.
As for the rest of the acts of Abijam, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? And there was war
between Abijam and
Jeroboam.
And there was war
between Asa and
Baasha king of Israel all their days.
Now there was war
between Asa and
Baasha king of Israel throughout their days.
There is a league
between me and thee, and
between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“Let there be a treaty
between me and you,
between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
And there was war
between Asa and
Baasha king of Israel all their days.
And there was war
between Asa and
Baasha king of Israel throughout their days.
In his days did Hiel the
Bethelite build
Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in
Abiram his
firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of
Nun.
In
Ahab’s days, Hiel the
Bethelite rebuilt
Jericho. At the cost of
Abiram his
firstborn he laid its foundation, and at the cost of Segub his youngest he set up its gates, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Joshua son of
Nun.
So they divided the land
between them to pass throughout it:
Ahab went one way by himself, and
Obadiah went another way by himself.
So they divided the land to
explore.
Ahab went one way by himself, and
Obadiah went the other way by himself.
And
Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long
halt ye
between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if
Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Then
Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver
between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if
Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.
So
Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of
Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face
between his knees,
So
Ahab went up to eat and drink. But
Elijah climbed to the summit of
Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face
between his knees.
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not
better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no
better than my fathers.”
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a
better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a
better vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.
Then three years passed without war
between Aram and Israel.
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel
between the joints of the
harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his
chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel
between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And
Elijah said unto
Elisha,
Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Bethel. And
Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to
Bethel.
and
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Bethel.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to
Bethel.
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And he went up from thence unto
Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and
mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou
bald head; go up, thou
bald head.
Are not
Abana and
Pharpar, rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a
rage.
Are not the Abanah and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not have washed in them and been
cleansed?” So he turned and went away in a
rage.
And
Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and
smote Jehoram
between his arms, and the
arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his
chariot.
But when
Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And
Jehu followed after him, and said,
Smite him also in the
chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to
Megiddo, and died there.
When King
Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road toward
Beth-haggan. And
Jehu pursued him,
shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot
Ahaziah in his
chariot on the
Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to
Megiddo and died there.
And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way,
And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and
slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
Then
Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So his men took them alive, then slaughtered them at the well of
Beth-
eked—forty-two men. He
spared none of them.
Howbeit from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin,
Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden
calves that were in
Bethel, and that were in
Dan.
but he did not turn away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden
calves at
Bethel and
Dan.
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out
between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they should be the LORD’S people; between the king also and the people.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
And the servants of
Joash rose up and formed a
conspiracy and killed him at
Beth-
millo, on the road down to Silla.
But
Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and
Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at
Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
But
Amaziah would not
listen, and Jehoash king of Israel advanced. He and King
Amaziah of Judah faced each other at
Beth-shemesh in Judah.
And Jehoash king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of
Ahaziah, at
Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at
Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and took Ijon, and
Abel-
beth-maachah, and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and
Gilead, and
Galilee, all the land of
Naphtali, and carried them
captive to Assyria.
In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon,
Abel-
beth-
maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor,
Gilead, and
Galilee, including all the land of
Naphtali, and he took the people as
captives to Assyria.
And he brought also the
brasen altar, which was before the LORD, from the
forefront of the house, from
between the altar and the house of the LORD, and put it on the north side of the altar.
He also took the bronze altar that stood before the LORD from the front of the temple (between the new altar and the house of the LORD) and he put it on the north side of the new altar.
Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in
Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
Thus one of the priests they had carried away came and lived in
Bethel, and he began to teach them how they should worship the LORD.
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest
between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned
between the
cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for
Baal, and for the
grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto
Bethel.
Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests second in rank, and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for
Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. And he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to
Bethel.
Moreover the altar that was at
Bethel, and the high place which
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar and the high place he
brake down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to powder, and burned the
grove.
He even pulled down the altar at
Bethel, the high place set up by
Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. Then he burned the high place, ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole.
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to
provoke the LORD to anger,
Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in
Bethel.
Just as
Josiah had done at
Bethel, so also in the cities of Samaria he removed all the shrines of the high places set up by the kings of Israel who had
provoked the LORD to anger.
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,

Bethlehem.
And Eshton
begat Beth-rapha, and Paseah, and Tehinnah the father of Ir-nahash. These are the men of Rechah.

Beth-ashbea, Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and

And at Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susim, and at Beth-birei, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

And Ashan with her suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with her suburbs:
Ashan, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh, together with their pasturelands.
And Jokmeam with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs,
Jokmeam, Beth-horon,
(And his daughter was Sherah, who built
Beth-horon the
nether, and the upper, and Uzzen-sherah.)
His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth-horon, as well as Uzzen-sheerah.
And their possessions and habitations were,
Bethel and the towns thereof, and eastward Naaran, and westward
Gezer, with the towns thereof;
Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto
Gaza and the towns thereof:
Their holdings and settlements included
Bethel and its villages, Naaran to the east,
Gezer and its villages to the west, and
Shechem and its villages as far as Ayyah and its villages.
And by the borders of the children of
Manasseh,
Beth-shean and her towns, Taanach and her towns,

Dor and her towns. In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.
And along the borders of
Manasseh were
Beth-shean, Taanach,
Megiddo, and
Dor, together with their villages. The descendants of Joseph son of Israel lived in these towns.
And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines’ garrison was then at
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come
peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon, and
rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them, saying, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.
David and all Israel went up to Baalah of Judah (that is, Kiriath-jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned
between the
cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand
between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in
sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing
between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, clothed in
sackcloth, fell facedown.
In the plain of Jordan did the king cast them, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zeredathah.
The king had them cast in clay molds in the plain of the Jordan between Succoth and Zeredah.
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
Also he built
Beth-horon the upper, and
Beth-horon the
nether,
fenced cities, with walls, gates, and bars;
He rebuilt Upper and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,
He built even
Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
And
Beth-zur, and Shoco, and
Adullam,
Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.
Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.”
Now the acts of
Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of
Iddo the
Seer concerning the
genealogies? There was war
between Rehoboam and
Jeroboam throughout their days.
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war
between Abijah and
Jeroboam.
and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah. And there was war
between Abijah and
Jeroboam.
And
Abijah pursued after
Jeroboam, and took cities from him,
Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.
Abijah pursued
Jeroboam and captured some cities from him:
Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron, along with their villages.
There is a league
between me and thee, as there was
between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“Let there be a treaty
between me and you,
between my father and your father. See, I have sent you silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel
between the joints of the
harness: therefore he said to his
chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel
between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities,
between blood and blood,
between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that they
trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that they will not
incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a
whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of
Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were
better than
thyself:
but you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves, just as the house of
Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were
better than you.
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, saying, “Bring her out
between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto
Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to
Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
So
Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and
Amaziah king of Judah, at
Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
So Jehoash king of Israel advanced, and he and
Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at
Beth-shemesh in Judah.
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at
Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at
Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.
The Philistines had also
raided the cities of the foothills and the Negev of Judah, capturing and occupying
Beth-shemesh,
Aijalon, and Gederoth, as well as Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo with their villages.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue
between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up
betimes, and sending; because he had
compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had
compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
The children of
Bethlehem, an hundred twenty and three.
The men of
Bethel and
Ai, two hundred twenty and three.
