brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy
bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul,
entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (which neither you nor your fathers have known,

creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his
brother; because it is called the LORD’S release.

creditor shall
cancel what he has
loaned to his
neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his
neighbor or
brother, because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed.
Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;
You may collect something from a foreigner, but you must
forgive whatever your
brother owes you.
If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not
harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor
brother:

brothers within any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, then you are not to
harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor
brother.
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor
brother, and thou givest him
nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.

brother and to the poor and

hearken;

brothers. You must
listen to him.
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath
testified falsely against his
brother;

fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his
brothers will not
melt like his own.”

brother’s ox or his sheep go

ignore it; be sure to return it to your
brother.

brother be not
nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy
brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.

ass; and so shalt thou do with his
raiment; and with all lost things of thy
brother’s, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide
thyself.
And you shall do the same for his
donkey, his
cloak, or anything your
brother has lost and you have found. You must not
ignore it.
Thou shalt not see thy
brother’s
ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide

brother’s

ignore it; you must help him lift it up.
Thou shalt not
abhor an
Edomite; for he is thy
brother: thou shalt not

wast a stranger in his land.

brother interest on money, food, or any other type of

brother thou shalt not
lend upon
usury: that the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not your
brother, so that the LORD your God may
bless you in everything to which you put your hand in the land that you are entering to possess.

degraded in your sight.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
When
brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s
brother is to take her as his wife and
fulfill the duty of a
brother-in-law for her.
And it shall be, that the
firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his
brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead
brother, so that his name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”
Then shall his
brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his
shoe from off his foot, and
spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his
brother’s house.

brother, and toward the wife of his
bosom, and toward the

begrudge his
brother, the wife he embraces, and the rest of his children who have survived,
And die in the mount
whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy
brother died in mount
Hor, and was gathered unto his people:
And there on the mountain that you
climb, you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your
brother Aaron died on Mount
Hor and was gathered to his people.
Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.

And for the precious things of the earth and
fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the
bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.

bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph and crown the
brow of the prince of his
brothers.

Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your
brothers and help them,
Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’S servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the
sunrising.
until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

spare the lives of my father and mother, my
brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will deliver us from death.”
Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou
didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
unless, when we enter the land, you have
tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother and
brothers and all your family into your house.
And the young men that were
spies went in, and brought
Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

Rahab, her father and mother and
brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought out her whole family and settled them outside the camp of Israel.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people
melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my
brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my God.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the
brother of
Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Caleb’s
brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And they came near before
Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of
Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
They approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our
brothers.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s
brothers, in keeping with the command of the LORD.

Now to the one half of the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
(To the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their
brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much
raiment: divide the
spoil of your enemies with your brethren.
saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of
livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your
brothers the
spoil of your enemies.”
And Judah said unto
Simeon his
brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of Judah said to their
brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger
brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger
brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And Judah went with
Simeon his
brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.

cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger
brother.

Caleb’s younger
brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save them.
And
Gideon went in, and made ready a
kid, and
unleavened cakes of an
ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a
basket, and he put the
broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
So
Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and
unleavened bread and an
ephah of flour. He placed the meat in a
basket and the
broth in a pot and brought them out to present to Him under the oak.
And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the
unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the
broth. And he did so.
And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the
unleavened bread, lay them on this rock, and pour out the
broth.” And
Gideon did so.
And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not
slay you.
“They were my
brothers,”
Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”
And
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to
Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
Now
Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s
brothers at
Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother,
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech; for they said, He is our
brother.
And when his mother’s
brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of
Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech, for they said, “He is our
brother.”
And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and
slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he
hid himself.
He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy
brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he
hid himself.
And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons,
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the men of
Shechem, because he is your
brother;)
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the leaders of
Shechem because he is your
brother—
And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of
Abimelech his
brother.
Then Jotham ran away, escaping to Beer, and he lived there for fear of his
brother Abimelech.
That the cruelty done to the
threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon
Abimelech their
brother, which
slew them; and upon the men of
Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be
avenged on their
brother Abimelech and on the leaders of
Shechem, who had helped him murder his
brothers.
And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to
Shechem: and the men of
Shechem put their confidence in him.

brothers and crossed into
Shechem, and the leaders of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
And he sent messengers unto
Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to
Shechem; and, behold, they
fortify the city against thee.
And
Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in
Shechem.
Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his
brothers out of
Shechem.

Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in
slaying his seventy brethren:
In this way God repaid the wickedness that
Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy
brothers.
Then
Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of
Tob: and there were gathered vain men to

brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
When the men returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, “What did you find?”
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their
brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my
brothers, do not do this wicked thing! After all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my
brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for battle against our
brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my
brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our
brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And the children of Israel
repented them for Benjamin their
brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
And the Israelites
grieved for their
brothers, the Benjamites, and said, “
Today a tribe is cut off from Israel.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to
complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
When their fathers or
brothers come to us to
complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no guilt.’”
And he said unto the
kinsman,
Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a
parcel of land, which was our
brother Elimelech’s:
And he said to the
kinsman-
redeemer, “
Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our
brother Elimelech.
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his
brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s
brother, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli, the LORD’S priest in
Shiloh, wearing an
ephod. And the people knew not that
Jonathan was gone.
including
Ahijah, who was wearing an
ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s
brother Ahitub son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli the priest of the LORD in
Shiloh. But the troops did not know that
Jonathan had left.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of his
brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD
rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to
Ramah.
And
Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an
ephah of this
parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
One day
Jesse said to his son David, “Take this
ephah of
roasted grain and these ten
loaves of bread for your
brothers and
hurry to their camp.
And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren
fare, and take their
pledge.
Take also these ten portions of
cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the
welfare of your
brothers and bring back an assurance from them.
And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and
saluted his brethren.
Then David left his supplies in the care of the
quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his
brothers how they were doing.
And Eliab his eldest
brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave
Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.
So David left
Gath and took refuge in the cave of
Adullam. When his
brothers and the rest of his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.
Then answered David and said to
Ahimelech the Hittite, and to
Abishai the son of Zeruiah,
brother to
Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And
Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
And David asked
Ahimelech the Hittite and
Abishai son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s
brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” “I will go with you,” answered
Abishai.
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
I am distressed for thee, my
brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
I
grieve for you,
Jonathan, my
brother. You were delightful to me; your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
And
Abner said again to
Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I
smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to
Joab thy
brother?
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their
brothers?”
And
Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his
brother.
“As surely as God lives,”
Joab replied, “if you had not spoken up, the troops would have continued pursuing their
brothers until morning.”
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his
brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
And when
Abner was returned to
Hebron,
Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and
smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of
Asahel his
brother.
And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have
fetched wheat; and they
smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his
brother escaped.
They entered the interior of the house as if to get some wheat, and they
stabbed him in the stomach. Then Rechab and his
brother Baanah
slipped away.
And David answered Rechab and Baanah his
brother, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all
adversity,
But David answered Rechab and his
brother Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of
Abishai his
brother, that he might put them in
array against the children of
Ammon.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of his
brother Abishai, who
arrayed them against the
Ammonites.
But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s
brother: and Jonadab was a very
subtil man.
Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of David’s
brother Shimeah. Jonadab was a very
shrewd man,
And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son,
lean from day to day?
wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my
brother Absalom’s sister.
so he asked Amnon, “Why are you, the son of the king, so depressed morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon replied, “I am in love with Tamar, my
brother Absalom’s sister.”
Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat.
Then David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Please go to the house of Amnon your brother and prepare a meal for him.”
So Tamar went to her
brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and
kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did
bake the cakes.
So Tamar went to the house of her
brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some
dough,
kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and
baked them.
