Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Peter said to Jesus, “
Rabbi, it is good
for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one
for You, one
for Moses, and one
for Elijah.”
For he
wist not what to say;
for they were
sore afraid.
For they were all so
terrified that Peter did not know what else to say.
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
Jesus answered, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer.”
For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
because He was teaching His disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”
But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
But they were silent,
for on the way they had been
arguing about which of them was the greatest.
And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we
forbad him, because he followeth not us.
John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone else driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not
accompany us.”
But Jesus said,
Forbid him not:
for there is no man which shall do a
miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied. “
For no one who performs a
miracle in My name can turn around and speak evil of Me.
For he that is not against us is on our part.
For whoever is not against us is
for us.
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ,
verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
Indeed, if
anyone gives you even a cup of water because you bear the name of Christ, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
And
whosoever shall
offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better
for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better
for him to have a large
millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.
And if thy hand
offend thee, cut it off: it is better
for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into
hell, into the fire that never shall be
quenched:
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better
for you to enter life
crippled than to have two hands and go into
hell, into the
unquenchable fire.
And if thy foot
offend thee, cut it off: it is better
for thee to enter
halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into
hell, into the fire that never shall be
quenched:
If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better
for you to enter life
lame than to have two feet and be thrown into
hell.
And if thine eye
offend thee,
pluck it out: it is better
for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into
hell fire:
And if your eye causes you to sin,
pluck it out. It is better
for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into
hell,
For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
And the
Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful
for a man to put away his wife?
tempting him.
Some
Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful
for a man to
divorce his wife?” they inquired.
And Jesus answered and said unto them,
For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this
precept.
But Jesus told them, “Moses wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and
cleave to his wife;
‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples
rebuked those that brought them.
Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus
for Him to place His hands on them, and the disciples
rebuked those who brought them.
But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and
forbid them not:
for of such is the kingdom of God.
But when Jesus saw this, He was
indignant and told them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them!
For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
And when he was gone
forth into the way, there came one running, and
kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may
inherit eternal life?
As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and
knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And he was
sad at that saying, and went away
grieved:
for he had great possessions.
But the man was
saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
And the disciples were
astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it
for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
And the disciples were
amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier
for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle, than
for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
It is easier
for a
camel to pass through the eye of a needle than
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
And Jesus answered and said,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands,
for my sake, and the gospel’s,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do
for us
whatsoever we shall desire.
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”
And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.
But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a
ransom for many.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a
ransom for many.”
And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.
Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man. “Take courage!” they said. “Get up! He is calling for you.”
And Jesus answered and said unto him, What
wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.
“What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “Rabboni,” said the blind man, “let me see again.”
And when they came
nigh to Jerusalem, unto
Bethphage and
Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth
forth two of his disciples,
As they approached Jerusalem and came to
Bethphage and
Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two of His disciples
And seeing a fig tree
afar off having leaves, he came, if
haply he might find any thing
thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves;
for the time of figs was not yet.
Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if there was any fruit on it. But when He reached it, He found nothing on it except leaves, since it was not the season for figs.
And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee
hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again.” And His disciples heard this statement.
And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of
thieves.
Then Jesus began to teach them, and He declared, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
And the
scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him:
for they feared him, because all the people was
astonished at his doctrine.
When the chief priests and
scribes heard this, they looked
for a way to kill Him.
For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was
astonished at His teaching.
For verily I say unto you, That
whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have
whatsoever he saith.
“Truly I tell you that if
anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done
for him.
Therefore I say unto you, What things
soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall havethem.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
And when ye stand praying,
forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may
forgive you your trespasses.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against another,
forgive it, so that your Father in heaven will
forgive your trespasses as well.”
But if ye do not
forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven
forgive your trespasses.
But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
But if we say, ‘From men’...” they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John truly was a prophet.
And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a
vineyard, and set an
hedge about it, and
digged a place
for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to
husbandmen, and went into a far country.
Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a
vineyard. He put a wall around it,
dug a wine
vat, and built a
watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.
And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
“Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are
honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”
Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
And the
scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth:
for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
“Right, Teacher,” the
scribe replied. “You have stated correctly that God is One and there is no other but Him,
For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy
footstool.
Speaking by the Holy Spirit, David himself declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
And he said unto them in his doctrine,
Beware of the
scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love
salutations in the marketplaces,
In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out
for the
scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
For they all contributed out of their
surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall
deceive many.
Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and will
deceive many.
And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be
alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in
divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
But take
heed to
yourselves:
for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings
for my sake,
for a testimony against them.
So be on your guard. You will be delivered over to the councils and beaten in the synagogues. On My account you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.
But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought
beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye
premeditate: but
whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye:
for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
But when they arrest you and hand you over, do not
worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time,
for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
And ye shall be
hated of all men
for my name’s sake: but he that shall
endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
You will be
hated by
everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.
And let no one in the field return
for his
cloak.
But
woe to them that are with child, and to them that give
suck in those days!
For in those days shall be
affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
For those will be days of
tribulation unmatched from the beginning of God’s creation until now, and never to be seen again.
And except that the Lord had
shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but
for the
elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath
shortened the days.
If the Lord had not cut short those days,
nobody would be saved. But
for the sake of the
elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short.
For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall
shew signs and wonders, to
seduce, if it were possible, even the
elect.
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders that would
deceive even the
elect, if that were possible.
So be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
Now learn this
lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and
sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
Take ye
heed, watch and pray:
for ye know not when the time is.
Be on your guard and stay
alert!
For you do not know when the appointed time will come.
For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own task, and
instructed the
doorkeeper to keep watch.
Watch ye therefore:
for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at
midnight, or at the
cockcrowing, or in the morning:
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know when the master of the house will return—whether in the evening, at
midnight, when the
rooster crows, or in the morning.
After two days was the feast of the
passover, and of
unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the
scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
Now the
Passover and the Feast of
Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and
scribes were looking
for a
covert way to arrest Jesus and kill Him.
For it might have been sold
for more than three hundred
pence, and have been given to the poor. And they
murmured against her.
It could have been sold
for over three hundred
denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they
scolded her.
For ye have the poor with you always, and
whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me.
Verily I say unto you,
Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of
for a
memorial of her.
And truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
And when they heard it, they were
glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently
betray him.
They were delighted to hear this, and they promised to give him money. So
Judas began to look
for an opportunity to
betray Jesus.
And the first day of
unleavened bread, when they killed the
passover, his disciples said unto him, Where
wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the
passover?
On the first day of the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, when the
Passover lamb was to be sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare
for You to eat the
Passover?”
And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a
jug of water will meet you. Follow him,
And he will
shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready
for us.
And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
And his disciples went
forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the
passover.
So the disciples left and went into the city, where they found everything as Jesus had described. And they prepared the
Passover.
The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but
woe to that man by whom the Son of man is
betrayed! good were it
for that man if he had never been born.
The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but
woe to that man by whom He is
betrayed! It would be better
for him if he had not been born.”
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be
offended because of me this night:
for it is written, I will
smite the
shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away,
for it is written: ‘I will strike the
Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.
And he said,
Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou
wilt.
“
Abba, Father,” He said, “all things are possible
for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.”
And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
Then Jesus returned and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you
asleep?” He asked. “Were you not able to keep watch
for one hour?
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into
temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
Watch and pray so that you will not enter into
temptation.
For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
And when he returned, he found them
asleep again, (
for their eyes were heavy,) neither
wist they what to answer him.
And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping—for their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to answer Him.
And they all
forsook him, and fled.
And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
Now the chief priests and the whole
Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any.
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony was inconsistent.
And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them:
for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth
thereto.
But he denied it again. After a little while, those standing nearby said once more to Peter, “Surely you are one of them,
for you too are a
Galilean.”
For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him
for envy.
For he knew it was out of
envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
And they
compel one Simon a
Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
Now Simon of
Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers
forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
And at the ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eloi,
Eloi,
lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?
At the ninth hour, Jesus
cried out in a loud voice, “
Eloi,
Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You
forsaken Me?”
And one ran and filled a
spunge full of
vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
And someone ran and filled a
sponge with
sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up
for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if
Elijah comes to take Him down.”
Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited
for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto
Pilate, and
craved the body of Jesus.
Joseph of
Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting
for the kingdom of God, boldly went to
Pilate to ask
for the body of Jesus.
And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, even though it was extremely large.
And he saith unto them, Be not
affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of
Nazareth, which was
crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
But he said to them, “Do not be
alarmed. You are looking
for Jesus the
Nazarene, who was
crucified. He has risen! He is not here! See the place where they put Him.
And they went out quickly, and fled from the
sepulchre;
for they
trembled and were
amazed: neither said they any thing to any man;
for they were afraid.
After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.
After this, Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them as they walked along in the country.
