And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.
and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi, because there must be one staff for the head of each tribe.
Then the LORD opened the eyes of
Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his
head, and fell flat on his face.
Then the LORD opened
Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. And
Balaam bowed low and fell facedown.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the
heads of the people, and
hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and
execute them in broad
daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was
head over a people, and of a chief house in
Midian.
And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a
tribal chief of a Midianite family.
And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded.
Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and
Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
“You and
Eleazar the priest and the family
heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.
And the chief fathers of the families of the children of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:
Now the family
heads of the clan of
Gilead son of Machir son of
Manasseh, one of the clans of Joseph, approached Moses and the leaders who were the
heads of the
Israelite families and addressed them,
So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them
heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over
fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes.
But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
But you are to turn back and head for the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea.”
Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount
Seir many days.
Then we turned back and
headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea, as the LORD had
instructed me, and for many days we
wandered around Mount
Seir.
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was
blazing with fire, all the
heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to
hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the
axe to cut down the tree, and the
head slippeth from the
helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall
flee unto one of those cities, and live:
If he goes into the forest with his
neighbor to cut timber and swings his
axe to
chop down a tree, but the
blade flies off the handle and strikes and kills his
neighbor, he may
flee to one of these cities to save his life.
Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall
shave her
head, and
pare her
nails;
then you shall bring her into your house. She must
shave her
head,
trim her
nails,
When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest
pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a
sickle unto thy neighbour’s standing corn.
And the LORD shall make thee the
head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:
The LORD will make you the
head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never
downward, if you hear and carefully follow the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am giving you
today.
And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
The sky over your head will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron.
The LORD shall
smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a
sore botch that cannot be
healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy
head.
The LORD will
afflict you with painful, incurable boils on your knees and thighs, from the soles of your feet to the top of your
head.
He shall
lend to thee, and thou shalt not
lend to him: he shall be the
head, and thou shalt be the tail.
He will
lend to you, but you will not
lend to him. He will be the
head, and you will be the tail.
I will make mine arrows
drunk with blood, and my sword shall
devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the
captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
I will make My arrows
drunk with blood, while My sword devours flesh— the blood of the slain and
captives, the
heads of the enemy leaders.”
And he was king in
Jeshurun, when the
heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.
So the LORD became King in
Jeshurun when the leaders of the people gathered, when the tribes of Israel came together.
And for the precious things of the earth and
fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the
bush: let the blessing come upon the
head of Joseph, and upon the top of the
head of him that was separated from his brethren.
with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it, and with the favor of Him who dwelt in the burning
bush. May these rest on the
head of Joseph and crown the
brow of the prince of his brothers.
And of
Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth
Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the
head.
Concerning
Gad he said: “Blessed is he who enlarges the
domain of
Gad! He lies down like a lion and tears off an arm or a
head.
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the
heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
And it shall be, that
whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his
head, and we will be guiltless: and
whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our
head, if any hand be upon him.
If
anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own
head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on
anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our
heads.
And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the
eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their
heads.
Then Joshua
tore his clothes and fell facedown before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all
sprinkled dust on their
heads.
And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the
head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of
Canaan, which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the
heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.
Now these are the portions that the Israelites inherited in the land of
Canaan, as distributed by
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the
heads of the families of the tribes of Israel.
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of
Jericho on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho,
headed west through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the
heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the
heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
Then came near the
heads of the fathers of the Levites unto
Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of
Nun, and unto the
heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
Now the family
heads of the Levites approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the
heads of the other tribes of Israel
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
Then the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh answered, and said unto the
heads of the thousands of Israel,
Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh answered the leaders of the clans of Israel:
And when
Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and
heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the
heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their
heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and
stricken in age:
he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their
heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
She put her hand to the
nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off his
head, when she had pierced and
stricken through his temples.
She reached for the tent
peg, her right hand for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced his temple.
And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they
slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they
slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued
Midian, and brought the
heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side Jordan.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the
heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
Thus was
Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their
heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of
Gideon.
In this way
Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its
head again. So the land had rest for forty years in the days of
Gideon,
And all the evil of the men of
Shechem did God render upon their
heads: and upon them came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own
heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
And the people and princes of
Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of
Ammon? he shall be
head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of
Ammon, and be our
head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
They answered
Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go with us, fight the
Ammonites, and become leader over all of us who live in
Gilead.”
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your
head?
But
Jephthah asked them, “If you take me back to fight the
Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”
Then
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him
head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And
Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall come on his
head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto God from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall come over his
head, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my
head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my
head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine
head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to
shave off the seven locks of his
head; and she began to
afflict him, and his strength went from him.
And having
lulled him to sleep on her
lap, she called a man to
shave off the seven braids of his
head. In this way she began to
subdue him, and his strength left him.
Howbeit the hair of his
head began to grow again after he was
shaven.
However, the hair of his
head began to grow back after it had been
shaved.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said unto
Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and
glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said to
Naomi, “Please let me go into the fields and
glean heads of grain after someone in whose sight I may find favor.” “Go
ahead, my daughter,”
Naomi replied.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his
head.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his
head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his
head.
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the
head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his
head and his hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And the cows
headed straight up the road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
Then Samuel took a
vial of oil, and poured it upon his
head, and
kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath
anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
Then Samuel took a
flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s
head,
kissed him, and said, “Has not the LORD
anointed you ruler over His inheritance?
And they ran and
fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of the others.
And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
And raiders went out of the
Philistine camp in three divisions. One
headed toward Ophrah in the land of Shual,
And the people said unto Saul, Shall
Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God
forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his
head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people
rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
But the people said to Saul, “Must
Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great
deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his
head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this
today.” So the people
rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
And Samuel said, When thou
wast little in thine own sight,
wast thou not made the
head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD
anointed thee king over Israel?
And Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, have you not become the
head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD
anointed you king over Israel
And he had an
helmet of brass upon his
head, and he was armed with a coat of
mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
and he had a bronze
helmet on his
head. He
wore a bronze coat of
mail weighing five thousand shekels,
And the staff of his
spear was like a
weaver’s beam; and his
spear’s
head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
The shaft of his
spear was like a
weaver’s beam, and its iron point
weighed six hundred shekels. In addition, his shield bearer went before him.
And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an
helmet of brass upon his
head; also he armed him with a coat of
mail.
Then Saul clothed David in his own
tunic, put a bronze
helmet on his
head, and dressed him in
armor.
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine
head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your
head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his
head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut off his
head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And David took the
head of the
Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
David took the
head of the
Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put
Goliath’s weapons in his own tent.
And as David returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine,
Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the
head of the
Philistine in his hand.
So when David returned from killing the
Philistine, still holding his
head in his hand,
Abner took him and brought him before Saul.
And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a
pillow of goats hair for his
bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
Then Michal took a household
idol and laid it in the bed, placed some goat hair on its
head, and covered it with a garment.
And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a
pillow of goats’ hair for his
bolster.
And when the messengers entered, there was the
idol in the bed with the
quilt of goats’ hair on its
head.
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own
head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own
head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
So David and
Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the
trench, and his
spear stuck in the ground at his
bolster: but
Abner and the people lay round about him.
That night David and
Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there
asleep in the inner circle of the camp, with his
spear stuck in the ground by his
head. And
Abner and the troops were lying around him.
The LORD
forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S
anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the
spear that is at his
bolster, and the
cruse of water, and let us go.
But the LORD
forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s
anointed. Instead, take the
spear and water
jug by his
head, and let us go.”
So David took the
spear and the
cruse of water from Saul’s
bolster; and they
gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither
awaked: for they were all
asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.
So David took the
spear and water
jug by Saul’s
head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew about it, nor did
anyone wake up; they all remained
asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his
head?”
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
David replied, “Then you will come to know what your servant can do.” “Very well,” said Achish. “I will make you my
bodyguard for life.”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the
heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the
heads of our men?
And they cut off his
head, and
stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to
publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
They cut off Saul’s
head,
stripped off his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his
head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance.
On the third day a man with
torn clothes and dust on his
head arrived from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him
homage.
So I stood upon him, and
slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his
head, and the
bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them
hither unto my lord.
So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not
survive. And I took the crown that was on his
head and the band that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy
head; for thy mouth hath
testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’S
anointed.
For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood be on your own
head because your own mouth has
testified against you, saying, ‘I killed the LORD’s
anointed.’”
And they caught every one his fellow by the
head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the
head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s
head, which against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the
head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
Let it rest on the
head of
Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of
Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a
leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
May it
whirl over the
heads of
Joab and the entire house of his father, and may the house of
Joab never be without one having a discharge or skin disease, or one who leans on a staff or falls by the sword or lacks food.”
For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his
bedchamber, and they
smote him, and
slew him, and
beheaded him, and took his
head, and
gat them away through the plain all night.
They had entered the house while
Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed, and having
stabbed and killed him, they
beheaded him, took his
head, and traveled all night by way of the Arabah.
And they brought the
head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the
head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the
head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the
head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”
And David commanded his young men, and they
slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and
hanged them up over the
pool in
Hebron. But they took the
head of
Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the
sepulchre of
Abner in
Hebron.
So David commanded his young men, and they killed Rechab and Baanah. They cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies by the
pool in
Hebron, but they took the
head of
Ish-bosheth and buried it in
Abner’s tomb in
Hebron.
And he took their king’s crown from off his
head, the weight
whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David’s
head. And he brought forth the
spoil of the city in great abundance.
Then he took the crown from the
head of their king. It
weighed a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s
head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And Tamar put ashes on her
head, and rent her garment of
divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her
head, and went on crying.
And Tamar put ashes on her
head and
tore her
robe. And putting her hand on her
head, she went away crying bitterly.
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s
head will fall to the ground.”
But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as
Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his
head there was no
blemish in him.
Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome and highly praised as
Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the top of his
head, he did not have a single
flaw.
And when he
polled his
head, (for it was at every year’s end that he
polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he
polled it:) he
weighed the hair of his
head at two hundred shekels after the king’s weight.
And when he cut the hair of his
head—he
shaved it every year because his hair got so heavy—he would
weigh it out to be two hundred shekels, according to the royal standard.
And David went up by the
ascent of mount Olivet, and
wept as he went up, and had his
head covered, and he went
barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his
head, and they went up,
weeping as they went up.
But David continued up the Mount of Olives,
weeping as he went up. His
head was covered, and he was walking
barefoot. And all the people with him covered their
heads and went up,
weeping as they went.
And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
When David came to the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his
robe torn and dust on his
head.
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his
head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog
curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his
head!”
And
Absalom met the servants of David. And
Absalom rode upon a
mule, and the
mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his
head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the
mule that was under him went away.
Now
Absalom was riding on his
mule when he met the servants of David, and as the
mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,
Absalom’s
head was caught fast in the tree. The
mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his
head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his
head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the
head of
Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to
Joab. And he
blew a
trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And
Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the
head of
Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to
Joab. So he
blew the ram’s horn and his men
dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And
Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
You have delivered me from the
strife of my people; You have preserved me as the
head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me.
Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his
hoar head go down to the grave in peace.
So act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray
head go down to
Sheol in peace.
Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray
head down to
Sheol in blood.”
