And as soon as we had
heard these things, our
hearts did
melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we
heard this, our
hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come
hither, and
hear the words of the LORD your God.
So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and
listen to the words of the LORD your God.”
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea,
heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their
heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast
heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their
hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye
hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you
hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had commanded the people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be
heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people
heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a great
shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they
heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great
shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the
hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the
hearts of the people melted and became like water.
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall
hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land
hear about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite,
heard thereof;
And when the inhabitants of
Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto
Jericho and to
Ai,
But the people of
Gibeon, having
heard what Joshua had done to
Jericho and
Ai,
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had
heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem
heard that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and that the people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD
hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD
listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
Now when Jabin king of Hazor heard about these things, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon; to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph;
For it was of the LORD to
harden their
hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their
hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine
heart.
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out the land, and I brought back to him an
honest report.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the
heart of the people
melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made the
hearts of the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to the LORD my God.
Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou
heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard then that the
Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your
heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And the children of Israel
heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
And when the children of Israel
heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at
Shiloh, to go up to war against them.
And when they
heard this, the whole congregation of Israel assembled at
Shiloh to go to war against them.
And when
Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him,
heard the words that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—
heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your
heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his hand.
Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and
incline your
heart unto the LORD God of Israel.
“Now, therefore,” he said, “get rid of the foreign gods among you and
incline your
hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid down for their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.
Listen, O kings! Give ear, O princes! I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.
My
heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless ye the LORD.
My
heart is with the princes of Israel, with the
volunteers among the people.
Bless the LORD!
And the princes of
Issachar were with
Deborah; even
Issachar, and also
Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of
Reuben there were great thoughts of
heart.
Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to
hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of
Reuben there were great searchings of
heart.
Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to
hear the
whistling for the flocks? In the clans of
Reuben there was great indecision.
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the
hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand remained.
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
And it was so, when
Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of
Midian.
When
Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up, for the LORD has delivered the camp of
Midian into your hand.”
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their
hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of
Shechem, their
hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount
Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and
cried, and said unto them,
Hearken unto me, ye men of
Shechem, that God may
hearken unto you.
And when Zebul the ruler of the city
heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was
kindled.
When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.
And when all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
On
hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of
Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of
Edom would not
hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of
Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of
Edom would not
listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but
Manoah her husband was not with her.
And God
listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband
Manoah was not with her.
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy
riddle, that we may
hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they replied. “Let us
hear it.”
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites
heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine
heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your
heart is not with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
That he told her all his
heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his
heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his
heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his
heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his
heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his
heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And it came to pass, when their
hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they set him between the pillars.
And while their
hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I
heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
And the priest’s
heart was
glad, and he took the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
So the priest was
glad and took the
ephod, the household idols, and the
graven image, and went with the people.
And the children of
Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be
heard among us, lest
angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.
The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or
angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.”
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine
heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your
heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the
damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and
tarry all night, and let thine
heart be
merry.
So they sat down and the two of them
ate and
drank together. Then the
girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your
heart be
merry.”
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel’s father said, Comfort thine
heart, I pray thee. And they
tarried until
afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart, but the
girl’s father said, “Please refresh your
heart.” So they waited until late
afternoon and the two of them
ate.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his
concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the
damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you
tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end,
lodge here, that thine
heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please
spend the night. See, the day is almost over.
Spend the night here, that your
heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early
tomorrow for your journey home.”
Now as they were making their
hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go.
(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
(Meanwhile the Benjamites
heard that the Israelites had gone up to
Mizpah.) And the Israelites asked, “Tell us, how did this wicked thing happen?”
Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and
purge Israel of this evil.” But the Benjamites refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
When
Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth,
Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go from hence, but
abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away from this place, but stay here close to my servant girls.
And when Boaz had eaten and
drunk, and his
heart was
merry, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of grain. Then
Ruth went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
Then said Elkanah her husband to her,
Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy
heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
“
Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why is your
heart so
grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
Now
Hannah, she spake in her
heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not
heard: therefore
Eli thought she had been
drunken.
Hannah was praying in her
heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be
heard. So
Eli thought she was
drunk And
Hannah prayed, and said, My
heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is
exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I
rejoice in thy salvation.
At that time
Hannah prayed: “My
heart rejoices in the LORD in whom my horn is
exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I
rejoice in Your salvation.
Now
Eli was very old, and
heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Now
Eli was very old, and he
heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I
hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I
hear: ye make the LORD’S people to
transgress.
No, my sons; it is not a good report I
hear circulating among the LORD’s people.
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they
hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would
slay them.
If a man sins against another man, God can
intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can
intercede for him?” But they would not
listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine
heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your
heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine
heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine
anointed for ever.
Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My
heart and mind. And I will build for him an
enduring house, and he will walk before My
anointed one for all time.
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant
heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that
heareth it shall
tingle.
Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who
hear it will
tingle.
And when the Philistines
heard the noise of the
shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great
shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
On
hearing the noise of the
shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud
shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his
heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his
heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult? And the man came in
hastily, and told
Eli.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she
heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she
heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
Wherefore then do ye
harden your
hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh
hardened their
hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
Why
harden your
hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh
hardened theirs? When He
afflicted them, did they not send the people on their way as they departed?
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your
hearts, then put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your
hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your
hearts, then rid
yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your
hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
When the Philistines
heard that the Israelites had gathered at
Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. And when the Israelites learned of this, they feared the Philistines
And Samuel took a
sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel
cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD
heard him.
Then Samuel took a
suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He
cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.
And the LORD said unto Samuel,
Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “
Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king.
Now therefore
hearken unto their voice:
howbeit yet
protest solemnly unto them, and
shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
Now
listen to them, but you must solemnly
warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
And Samuel
heard all the words of the people, and he
rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
Samuel
listened to all the words of the people and repeated them in the
hearing of the LORD.
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go back to his city.”
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine
heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your
heart.
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, and the men of
valor whose
hearts God had touched went with him.
Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the
tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and
wept.
When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and relayed these words in the
hearing of the people, they all
wept aloud.
And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he
heard those
tidings, and his anger was
kindled greatly.
When Saul
heard their words, the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have
hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I have
listened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and I have set over you a king.
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.
And
Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines
heard of it. And Saul
blew the
trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews
hear.
Then
Jonathan attacked the
Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines
heard about it. So Saul
blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews
hear!”
And all Israel
heard say that Saul had
smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in
abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to
Gilgal.
And all Israel
heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a
stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at
Gilgal.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own
heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”
