And next him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour.
and next to
him, Amasiah son of Zichri, the
volunteer for the LORD, and with
him 200,000 mighty men of
valor.
And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men with bow and shield two hundred thousand.
From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of
valor, and with
him 200,000 armed with bows and shields;
And next
him was Jehozabad, and with
him an hundred and
fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war.
and next to him, Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 armed for battle.
Now
Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance, and joined affinity with
Ahab.
Now
Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance, and he allied
himself with
Ahab by marriage.
And after certain years he went down to
Ahab to Samaria. And
Ahab killed sheep and oxen for
him in abundance, and for the people that he had with
him, and persuaded
him to go up with
him to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And some years later he went down to visit
Ahab in Samaria, where
Ahab sacrificed many sheep and cattle for
him and the people with
him, and urged
him to march up to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And
Ahab king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat king of Judah,
Wilt thou go with me to
Ramoth-
gilead? And he answered
him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.
Ahab king of Israel asked
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against
Ramoth-
gilead?” And
Jehoshaphat replied, “I am like you, and my people are your people; we will join you in the war.”
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of
him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had made
him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith the LORD, With these thou shalt
push Syria until they be consumed.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for
himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to
him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And when he was come to the king, the king said unto
him, Micaiah, shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and
prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand.
When Micaiah arrived, the king asked
him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for they will be given into your hand.”
And the king said to
him, How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to
him, “How many times must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
Then there came out a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
entice him. And the LORD said unto
him,
Wherewith?
Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD.
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt
entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Then the king of Israel said, Take ye Micaiah, and carry
him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to
Joash the king’s son;
And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and return
him to Amon the governor of the city and to
Joash the king’s son,
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed
him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I return in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, I will
disguise myself, and will go to the battle; but put thou on thy robes. So the king of Israel
disguised himself; and they went to the battle.
And the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “I will
disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel
disguised himself and went into battle.
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the
chariots that were with
him, saying, Fight ye not with small or great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And it came to pass, when the captains of the
chariots saw
Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about
him to fight: but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped
him; and God moved them to depart from
him.
When the
chariot commanders saw
Jehoshaphat, they said, “This is the king of Israel!” So they turned to fight against
him, but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped
him. God drew them away from
him.
For it came to pass, that, when the captains of the
chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back again from pursuing
him.
And when the
chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing
him.
And the battle increased that day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed
himself up in his
chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going down he died.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king of Israel
propped himself up in his
chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
And
Jehu the son of Hanani the
seer went out to meet
him, and said to king
Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that
hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.
Jehu son of Hanani the
seer went out to
confront him and said to King
Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who
hate the LORD? Because of this, the wrath of the LORD is upon you.
And
Jehoshaphat feared, and set
himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
Jehoshaphat was
alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.
And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
So the people of Judah gathered to seek the LORD, and indeed, they came from all the cities of Judah to seek Him.
And
Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD,
worshipping the LORD.
Then
Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before the LORD to worship
Him.
So the realm of
Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave
him rest round about.
Then
Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God had given
him rest on every side.
And after this did
Jehoshaphat king of Judah join
himself with
Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
Later,
Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with
Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.
And he joined
himself with
him to make ships to go to
Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-gaber.
They agreed to make ships to go to
Tarshish, and these were built in Ezion-
geber.
Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened
himself, and
slew all his brethren with the sword, and
divers also of the princes of Israel.
When Jehoram had established himself over his father’s kingdom, he strengthened himself by putting to the sword all his brothers along with some of the princes of Israel.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to
him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his
chariots with
him: and he rose up by night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed
him in, and the captains of the
chariots.
So Jehoram crossed into
Edom with his officers and all his
chariots. When the Edomites surrounded
him and his
chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by night.
And there came a writing to
him from
Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
And they came up into Judah, and
brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left
him, save
Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
So they went to war against Judah, invaded it, and carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace, along with his sons and wives; not a son was left to
him except
Jehoahaz, his youngest.
And after all this the LORD
smote him in his
bowels with an incurable disease.
After all this, the LORD
afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the
bowels.
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people made no burning for
him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired.
Howbeit they buried
him in the city of David, but not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s
regret, and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And he returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given
him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel, because he was sick.
so he returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on
him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
And he sought
Ahaziah: and they caught
him, (for he was
hid in Samaria,) and brought
him to
Jehu: and when they had slain
him, they buried
him: Because, said they, he is the son of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of
Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.
Then
Jehu looked for
Ahaziah, and
Jehu’s soldiers captured
him while he was hiding in Samaria. So
Ahaziah was brought to
Jehu and put to death. They buried
him, for they said, “He is the grandson of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one was left from the house of
Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put
him and his
nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that she
slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put
him and his
nurse in a
bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister, she
hid Joash from
Athaliah so that she could not kill
him.
And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened
himself, and took the captains of hundreds,
Azariah the son of Jeroham, and
Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and
Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with
him.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened
himself and made a covenant with the commanders of hundreds—with
Azariah son of Jeroham,
Ishmael son of Jehohanan,
Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri.
Then they brought out the king’s son, and put upon
him the crown, and gave
him the testimony, and made
him king. And Jehoiada and his sons
anointed him, and said, God save the king.
Then Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son, put the crown on
him, presented
him with the Testimony, and proclaimed
him king. They
anointed him and
shouted, “Long live the king!”
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let
him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.
And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
He also took with
him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace through the Upper Gate. They seated King
Joash on the royal throne,
And Jehoiada took for
him two wives; and he
begat sons and daughters.
Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he had sons and daughters.
And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses the servant of the LORD and by the assembly of Israel for the Tent of the Testimony?”
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they
testified against them: but they would not give ear.
Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to
Him and to
testify against them; but they would not
listen.
And they
conspired against
him, and stoned
him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
Thus
Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to
him, but
slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Thus King
Joash failed to remember the kindness that
Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to
him. Instead,
Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he lay dying,
Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against
him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the army of
Aram went to war against
Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
And when they were departed from
him, (for they left
him in great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against
him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried
him in the city of David, but they buried
him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against
him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed
him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And these are they that
conspired against
him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a
Moabitess.
Those who
conspired against
Joash were Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the
Moabitess.
Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon
him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in his
stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about
him and about the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And his son
Amaziah reigned in his place.
Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to
him, that he
slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his
grasp,
Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king.
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
Then
Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to
him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly
kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
So
Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to
him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were
furious with Judah and returned home in great anger.
And
Amaziah strengthened
himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and
smote of the children of
Seir ten thousand.
Amaziah, however, summoned his strength and led his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of
Seir,
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with
him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down
himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
Amaziah, and he sent unto
him a prophet, which said unto
him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against
Amaziah, and He sent
him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
And it came to pass, as he talked with
him, that the king said unto
him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought
him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought
him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
Now after the time that
Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a
conspiracy against
him in Jerusalem; and he fled to
Lachish: but they sent to
Lachish after
him, and
slew him there.
From the time that
Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a
conspiracy was formed against
him in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish. But men were sent after
him to
Lachish, and they killed
him there.
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the City of Judah.
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made
him king in the room of his father
Amaziah.
All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made
him king in place of his father
Amaziah.
And he sought God in the days of
Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made
him to
prosper.
He sought God throughout the days of
Zechariah, who
instructed him in the fear of God. And as long as he sought the LORD, God gave
him success.
And God helped
him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-
baal, and the Mehunims.
God helped
him against the Philistines, against the Arabs living in Gur-
baal, and against the Meunites.
And the
Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Egypt; for he strengthened
himself exceedingly.
The
Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he had become exceedingly powerful.
Then
Azariah the priest, along with eighty
brave priests of the LORD, went in after
him.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto
him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
And
Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon
him, and, behold, he was
leprous in his
forehead, and they thrust
him out from thence;
yea,
himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had
smitten him.
So Uzziah
slept with his fathers, and they buried
him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a
leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his
stead.
And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried near them in a field of burial that belonged to the kings; for the people said, “He was a
leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
He fought also with the king of the
Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of
Ammon gave
him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of
Ammon pay unto
him, both the second year, and the third.
Jotham
waged war against the king of the
Ammonites and defeated them, and that year they gave
him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. They paid
him the same in the second and third years.
And Jotham
slept with his fathers, and they buried
him in the city of David: and
Ahaz his son reigned in his
stead.
And Jotham rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son
Ahaz reigned in his place.
Wherefore the LORD his God delivered
him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they
smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them
captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who
smote him with a great slaughter.
So the LORD his God delivered
Ahaz into the hand of the king of
Aram, who attacked
him and took many
captives to Damascus.
Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck
him with great force.
At that time did king
Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help
him.
At that time King
Ahaz sent for help from the king of Assyria.
And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.
For
Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped
him not.
Although
Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented it to the king of Assyria, it did not help
him.
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of
him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated
him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And
Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made
him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
Then
Ahaz gathered up the articles of the house of God, cut them into pieces, shut the doors of the house of the LORD, and set up altars of his own on every street corner in Jerusalem.
And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried
him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought
him not into the
sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
For our fathers have
trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have
forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the
habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs.
For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him.
My sons, be not now
negligent: for the LORD hath chosen you to stand before
him, to serve
him, and that ye should minister unto
him, and burn incense.
Now, my sons, do not be
negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before
Him, to serve
Him, to minister before
Him, and to burn incense.”
And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped.
When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto
him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you return to
Him.”
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered
him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered
him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
And next
him were
Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
Under his authority,
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow priests in their cities, according to their divisions, old and young alike.
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for
himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for
himself.
He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
he consulted with his leaders and commanders about
stopping up the waters of the springs outside the city, and they helped
him carry it out.
Also he strengthened
himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to
him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake
comfortably to them, saying,
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
Be strong and
courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with
him: for there be more with us than with
him:
“Be strong and
courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria and the vast army with
him, for there is a greater One with us than with
him.
With
him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
With
him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he
himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with
him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
Hath not the same
Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
Did not
Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn sacrifices’?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe
him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let
him mislead you like this. Do not believe
him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against
him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against
Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck
him down with the sword.
In those days
Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto
him, and he gave
him a sign.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. So he prayed to the LORD, who spoke to
him and gave
him a sign.
