So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that
Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the
house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
When all Israel heard that
Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah followed the
house of David.
And when
Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the
house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and
fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the
house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to
Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
And when
Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he
mobilized the whole
house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—180,000 chosen warriors—to fight against the
house of Israel and restore the kingdom to
Rehoboam son of Solomon.
Speak unto
Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the
house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the
remnant of the people, saying,
“Tell
Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, all the
house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his
house; for this thing is from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
And
Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the
house of David:
Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom might
revert to the
house of David.
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the
house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto
Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to
Rehoboam king of Judah.
If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the
house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord,
Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to
Rehoboam king of Judah.”
And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people priests who were not Levites.
And he
cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the
house of David,
Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.
And he
cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says: ‘A son named
Josiah will be born to the
house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine
house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine
house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his
house, and
drank water.
but the man of God went back with him,
ate bread in his
house, and
drank water.
For the saying which he
cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel, and against all the
houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
for the message that he
cried out by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely come to pass.”
And this thing became sin unto the
house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the
house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.
And
Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose, and went to
Shiloh, and came to the
house of
Ahijah. But
Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.
And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
I
tore the kingdom away from the
house of David and gave it to you. But you were not like My servant David, who kept My commandments and followed Me with all his heart, doing only what was right in My eyes.
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the
house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the
house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the
house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the
house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.
As for you, get up and go home. When your feet enter the city, the child will die.
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the
house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the
house of
Jeroboam.
Moreover the LORD shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the
house of
Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
Moreover, the LORD will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will cut off the
house of
Jeroboam. This is the day—
yes, even
today!
And
Jeroboam’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when she came to the
threshold of the door, the child died;
Then
Jeroboam’s wife got up and departed for Tirzah, and as soon as she
stepped over the
threshold of the
house, the boy died.
And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
He seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including all the gold shields that Solomon had made.
And king
Rehoboam made in their
stead brasen shields, and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s
house.
Then King
Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
And it was so, when the king went into the house of the LORD, that the guard bare them, and brought them back into the guard chamber.
And whenever the king entered the
house of the LORD, the guards would bear the shields, and later they would return them to the
guardroom.
And there was war between the
houses of
Rehoboam and
Jeroboam all the days of Abijam’s life.
And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the LORD, silver, and gold, and vessels.
And he brought into the house of the LORD the silver and gold and other articles that he and his father had dedicated.
Then
Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the
house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s
house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king
Asa sent them to Ben-
hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
So
Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the
treasuries of the
house of the LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it to his servants and sent them with this message to Ben-
hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he
smote all the
house of
Jeroboam; he left not to
Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Ahijah the Shilonite:
As soon as
Baasha became king, he struck down the entire
household of
Jeroboam. He did not leave to
Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the Shilonite,
So now I will
consume Baasha and his
house, and I will make your
house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat:
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his
house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the
house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his
house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the
house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck down the
house of
Jeroboam.
And his servant Zimri, captain of half his
chariots,
conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself
drunk in the
house of Arza
steward of his
house in Tirzah.
However, while Elah was in Tirzah getting
drunk in the
house of Arza the
steward of his
household there, Elah’s servant Zimri, the commander of half his
chariots,
conspired against him.
And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he
slew all the
house of
Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.
As soon as Zimri began to reign and was seated on the throne, he struck down the entire
household of
Baasha. He did not leave a single male, whether a
kinsman or friend.
Thus did Zimri destroy all the
house of
Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against
Baasha by
Jehu the prophet,
So Zimri destroyed the entire
household of
Baasha, according to the word that the LORD had spoken against
Baasha through
Jehu the prophet.
And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died,
When Zimri saw that the city was captured, he entered the citadel of the royal palace and burned it down upon himself. So he died
And he reared up an altar for
Baal in the
house of
Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
First,
Ahab set up an altar for
Baal in the temple of
Baal that he had built in Samaria.
And she went and did according to the saying of
Elijah: and she, and he, and her
house, did eat many days.
So she went and did according to the word of
Elijah, and there was food every day for
Elijah and the woman and her
household.
And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the
house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
And
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the
house, and delivered him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the
house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,”
Elijah declared.
And
Ahab called
Obadiah, which was the governor of his
house. (Now
Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:
and
Ahab summoned
Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now
Obadiah greatly feared the LORD,
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s
house, in that ye have
forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed
Baalim.
“I have not troubled Israel,”
Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s
house have, for you have
forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.
Yet I will send my servants unto thee to
morrow about this time, and they shall search thine
house, and the
houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that
whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
But about this time
tomorrow I will send my servants to search your palace and the
houses of your servants. They will seize and carry away all that is precious to you.’”
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the
house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the
house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel with
sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
Sullen and
angry, the king of Israel went home to Samaria.
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my
house: and I will give thee for it a better
vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a better
vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
And
Ahab came into his
house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to eat.
I will make your
house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah, because you have
provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
Seest thou how
Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his
house.
“Have you seen how
Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the
calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his
house in the days of his son.”
And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his
house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
Now the rest of the acts of
Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory
house which he made, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
As for the rest of the acts of
Ahab, along with all his accomplishments and the ivory palace and all the cities he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
And
Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the
house? And she said, Thine
handmaid hath not any thing in the
house, save a pot of oil.
“How can I help you?” asked
Elisha. “Tell me, what do you have in the
house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the
house but a
jar of oil.”
And when
Elisha was come into the
house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
When
Elisha reached the
house, there was the boy lying dead on his bed.
Then he returned, and walked in the
house to and
fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child
sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Elisha turned away and
paced back and forth across the room. Then he got on the bed and stretched himself out over the boy again, and the boy
sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
So
Naaman came with his horses and with his
chariot, and stood at the door of the
house of
Elisha.
In this thing the LORD
pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the
house of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the
house of
Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the
house of
Rimmon, the LORD
pardon thy servant in this thing.
Yet may the LORD
forgive your servant this one thing: When my master goes into the temple of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of
Rimmon, may the LORD
forgive your servant in this matter.”
And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from the servants and stored them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they departed.
But
Elisha sat in his
house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his
house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good
tidings, and we hold our peace: if we
tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s
household.
Finally, they said to one another, “We are not doing what is right.
Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our sin will overtake us. Now, therefore, let us go and tell the king’s
household.”
And he called the
porters; and they told it to the king’s
house within.
The gatekeepers
shouted the news, and it was reported to the king’s
household.
Then spake
Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine
household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your
household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her
household, and
sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
So the woman had proceeded to do as the man of God had
instructed. And she and her
household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.
And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.
At the end of seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to the king to appeal for her house and her land.
And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life,
cried to the king for her
house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom
Elisha restored to life.
And Gehazi was telling the king how
Elisha had brought the dead back to life. Just then the woman whose son
Elisha had revived came to appeal to the king for her
house and her land. So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is the son
Elisha restored to life.”
And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the
house of
Ahab: for the daughter of
Ahab was his wife: and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
And Jehoram walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the
house of
Ahab had done. For he married a daughter of
Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD.
And he walked in the way of the
house of
Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the
house of
Ahab: for he was the son in law of the
house of
Ahab.
And
Ahaziah walked in the ways of the
house of
Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD like the
house of
Ahab, for he was a son-in-law of the
house of
Ahab.
And he arose, and went into the
house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have
anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.
So
Jehu got up and went into the
house, where the young prophet poured the oil on his head and declared, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I
anoint you king over the LORD’s people Israel.
And thou shalt
smite the
house of
Ahab thy master, that I may
avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of
Jezebel.
And you are to strike down the
house of your master
Ahab, so that I may
avenge the blood of My servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the LORD shed by the hand of
Jezebel.
For the whole
house of
Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from
Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel:
The whole
house of
Ahab will perish, and I will cut off from
Ahab every male, both slave and free, in Israel.
And I will make the
house of
Ahab like the
house of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the
house of
Baasha the son of
Ahijah:
But when
Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden
house. And
Jehu followed after him, and said,
Smite him also in the
chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to
Megiddo, and died there.
When King
Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. And
Jehu pursued him,
shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot
Ahaziah in his
chariot on the
Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to
Megiddo and died there.
Look even out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
select the best and most worthy son of your master, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.”
And he that was over the
house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to
Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt
bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes.
So the palace
administrator, the
overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to
Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you say. We will not make
anyone king. Do whatever is good in your sight.”
Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the
house of
Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant
Elijah.
Know, then, that not a word the LORD has spoken against the
house of
Ahab will fail, for the LORD has done what He promised through His servant
Elijah.”
So
Jehu slew all that remained of the
house of
Ahab in
Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
So
Jehu killed
everyone in
Jezreel who remained of the
house of
Ahab, as well as all his great men and close friends and priests, leaving him without a single
survivor.
And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way,
And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and
slew them at the pit of the shearing
house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
Then
Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So his men took them alive, then slaughtered them at the well of Beth-
eked—forty-two men. He
spared none of them.
And
Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of
Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into the
house of
Baal; and the
house of
Baal was full from one end to another.
Then
Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of
Baal came; there was not a man who failed to show. They entered the temple of
Baal, and it was filled from end to end.
And
Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the
house of
Baal, and said unto the worshippers of
Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of
Baal only.
Next,
Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of
Baal, and
Jehu said to the servants of
Baal, “Look around to see that there are no servants of the LORD here among you—only servants of
Baal.”
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that
Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and
slay them; let none come forth. And they
smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the
house of
Baal.
When he had finished making the burnt offering,
Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Do not let
anyone out.” So the guards and officers put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and went into the inner room of the temple of
Baal.
And they brought forth the images out of the
house of
Baal, and burned them.
They brought out the sacred
pillar of the temple of
Baal and burned it.
And they
brake down the image of
Baal, and
brake down the
house of
Baal, and made it a draught
house unto this day.
And the LORD said unto
Jehu, Because thou hast done well in
executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the
house of
Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
Nevertheless, the LORD said to
Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the
house of
Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
And he was with her
hid in the
house of the LORD six years. And
Athaliah did reign over the land.
And
Joash remained hidden with his
nurse in the
house of the LORD for six years while
Athaliah ruled the land.
And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and
fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the
house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the
house of the LORD, and shewed them the king’s son.
Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought into the house of the LORD. There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son
And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;
and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard the royal palace,
And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.
a third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guards. You are to take turns guarding the temple—
And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.
the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath are to guard the house of the LORD for the king.
And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields, that were in the temple of the LORD.
Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields of King David from the house of the LORD.
And when
Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the LORD.
When
Athaliah heard the noise from the guards and the people, she went out to the people in the
house of the LORD.
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the
house of the LORD.”
And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain.
So they seized
Athaliah as she reached the horses’ entrance to the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.
And all the people of the land went into the
house of
Baal, and
brake it down; his altars and his images
brake they in pieces thoroughly, and
slew Mattan the priest of
Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the
house of the LORD.
So all the people of the land went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of
Baal in front of the altars. And Jehoiada the priest posted guards for the
house of the LORD.
And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the
house of the LORD and entered the royal palace by way of the Gate of the Guards. Then
Joash took his seat on the royal throne,
And all the people of the land
rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they
slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s
house.
and all the people of the land
rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because
Athaliah had been put to the sword at the royal palace.
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the
house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the
house of the LORD.
Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the
house,
wheresoever any breach shall be found.
Let every priest receive it from his
constituency, and let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”
But it was so, that in the three and
twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the
house.
By the twenty-third year of the reign of
Joash, however, the priests had not yet repaired the damage to the temple.
Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
So King
Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your
constituency, but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.
So the priests agreed that they would not receive money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.
But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the
lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the
house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the
house of the LORD.
Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its
lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the
house of the LORD. There the priests who guarded the
threshold put all the money brought into the
house of the LORD.
