And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded.
Although He had
warned Solomon
explicitly not to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the
LORD’s command.
Wherefore the
LORD said unto Solomon,
Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely
rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Then the
LORD said to Solomon, “Because you have done this and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will
tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
And God
stirred him up another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his
lord Hadadezer king of Zobah:
And God raised up against Solomon another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah,
And he said to
Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the
LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will
rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:
and said to
Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for
yourself, for this is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will
tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and I will give you ten tribes.
Wherefore the king
hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the
LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the
LORD spake by
Ahijah the Shilonite unto
Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
So the king did not
listen to the people, and indeed this turn of events was from the
LORD, to
fulfill the word He had spoken to
Jeroboam son of Nebat through
Ahijah the Shilonite.
Thus saith the
LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the
LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the
LORD.
that this is what the
LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the
LORD and turned back according to the word of the
LORD.
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the
LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their
lord, even unto
Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to
Rehoboam king of Judah.
If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the
LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their
lord,
Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to
Rehoboam king of Judah.”
And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the
LORD unto
Bethel: and
Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
Suddenly, as
Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God from Judah to
Bethel by the word of the
LORD.
And he
cried against the altar in the word of the
LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the
LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David,
Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.
And he
cried out against the altar by the word of the
LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the
LORD says: ‘A son named
Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”
And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
That day the man of God gave a sign, saying, “The LORD has spoken this sign: ‘Surely the altar will be split apart, and the ashes upon it will be poured out.’”
The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the
LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God
besought the
LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the man of God, “
Intercede with the
LORD your God and pray that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God
interceded with the
LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.
For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the
LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:
While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,
And he
cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the
LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the
LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the
LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the prophet
cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the
LORD says: ‘Because you have
defied the word of the
LORD and have not kept the commandment that the
LORD your God gave you,
But camest back, and hast eaten bread and
drunk water in the place, of the which the
LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy
carcase shall not come unto the
sepulchre of thy fathers.
but you went back and
ate bread and
drank water in the place where He told you not to do so, your body shall never reach the tomb of your fathers.’”
And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was
disobedient unto the word of the
LORD: therefore the
LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath
torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the
LORD, which he spake unto him.
When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the
LORD. Therefore the
LORD has delivered him to the lion, and it has
mauled him and killed him, according to the word that the
LORD had spoken to him.”
For the saying which he
cried by the word of the
LORD against the altar in
Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
for the message that he
cried out by the word of the
LORD against the altar in
Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely come to pass.”
And the
LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the
LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
Go, tell
Jeroboam, Thus saith the
LORD God of Israel,
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,
Go, tell
Jeroboam that this is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I raised you up from among the people and appointed you ruler over My people Israel.
Him that dieth of
Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the
LORD hath spoken it.
Anyone belonging to
Jeroboam who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.’ For the
LORD has spoken.
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the
LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in him has the
LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
Moreover the
LORD shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of
Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
Moreover, the
LORD will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of
Jeroboam. This is the day—
yes, even
today!
For the
LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves,
provoking the
LORD to anger.
For the
LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the water. He will
uproot Israel from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the
LORD to anger.
And they buried him; and all Israel
mourned for him, according to the word of the
LORD, which he spake by the hand of his servant
Ahijah the prophet.
And they buried him, and all Israel
mourned for him, according to the word that the
LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the prophet.
And
Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah.
Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the
LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
Meanwhile,
Rehoboam son of Solomon reigned in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the
LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name. His mother’s name was Naamah the
Ammonite.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the
LORD, and they
provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the
LORD, and by the sins they committed they
provoked Him to
jealous anger more than all their fathers had done.
And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
There were even male
shrine prostitutes in the land. They imitated all the abominations of the nations the
LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
He seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including all the gold shields that Solomon had made.
And it was so, when the king went into the house of the LORD, that the guard bare them, and brought them back into the guard chamber.
And whenever the king entered the house of the
LORD, the guards would bear the shields, and later they would return them to the
guardroom.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.
And Abijam walked in all the sins that his father before him had committed, and his heart was not as fully devoted to the
LORD his God as the heart of David his
forefather had been.
Nevertheless for David’s sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and to make Jerusalem strong.
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
And
Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the
LORD, as did David his father.
And
Asa did what was right in the eyes of the
LORD, as his father David had done.
But the high places were not removed: nevertheless
Asa’s heart was perfect with the
LORD all his days.
The high places were not removed, but
Asa’s heart was fully devoted to the
LORD all his days.
And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the LORD, silver, and gold, and vessels.
And he brought into the house of the LORD the silver and gold and other articles that he and his father had dedicated.
Then
Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the
LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king
Asa sent them to Ben-
hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
So
Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the
treasuries of the house of the
LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it to his servants and sent them with this message to Ben-
hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
And he did evil in the sight of the
LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in his sin, which he had caused Israel to commit.
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he
smote all the house of
Jeroboam; he left not to
Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the
LORD, which he spake by his servant
Ahijah the Shilonite:
As soon as
Baasha became king, he struck down the entire household of
Jeroboam. He did not leave to
Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all according to the word that the
LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the Shilonite,
because of the sins
Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he had
provoked the
LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
And he did evil in the sight of the
LORD, and walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin.
And
Baasha did evil in the sight of the
LORD and walked in the way of
Jeroboam and in his sin, which he had caused Israel to commit.
Then the word of the
LORD came to
Jehu the son of Hanani against
Baasha, saying,
Then the word of the
LORD came to
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha, saying:
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the
LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the
LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the
LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the
LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck down the house of
Jeroboam.
Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of
Baasha, according to the word of the
LORD, which he spake against
Baasha by
Jehu the prophet,
So Zimri destroyed the entire household of
Baasha, according to the word that the
LORD had spoken against
Baasha through
Jehu the prophet.
For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the
LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
This happened because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,
provoking the
LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
For his sins which he
sinned in doing evil in the sight of the
LORD, in walking in the way of
Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.
because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the sight of the
LORD and following the example of
Jeroboam and the sin he had committed and had caused Israel to commit.
But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him.
But Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD and acted more wickedly than all who were before him.
For he walked in all the way of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin, to
provoke the
LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
For he walked in all the ways of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sins, which he caused Israel to commit,
provoking the
LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
And
Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the
LORD above all that were before him.
However,
Ahab son of Omri did evil in the sight of the
LORD, more than all who were before him.
And
Ahab made a
grove; and
Ahab did more to
provoke the
LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
Then he set up an Asherah pole. Thus
Ahab did more to
provoke the
LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel before him.
In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build
Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in
Abiram his
firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the
LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of
Nun.
In
Ahab’s days, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt
Jericho. At the cost of
Abiram his
firstborn he laid its foundation, and at the cost of Segub his youngest he set up its gates, according to the word that the
LORD had spoken through Joshua son of
Nun.
And
Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of
Gilead, said unto
Ahab, As the
LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be
dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
Now
Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of
Gilead, said to
Ahab, “As surely as the
LORD lives—the God of Israel before whom I stand—there will be neither
dew nor rain in these years except at my word!”
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
Then a revelation from the
LORD came to
Elijah:
So he went and did according unto the word of the
LORD: for he went and dwelt by the
brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
So
Elijah did what the
LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the
Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
Then the word of the
LORD came to
Elijah:
And she said, As the
LORD thy God liveth, I have not a
cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a
cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
But she replied, “As surely as the
LORD your God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a
jar and a little oil in a
jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
For thus saith the
LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the
cruse of oil fail, until the day that the
LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
for this is what the
LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The
jar of flour will not be exhausted and the
jug of oil will not run dry until the day the
LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’”
And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the
cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the
LORD, which he spake by
Elijah.
The
jar of flour was not exhausted and the
jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the
LORD had spoken through
Elijah.
And he
cried unto the
LORD, and said, O
LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I
sojourn, by
slaying her son?
Then he
cried out to the
LORD, “O
LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the
LORD, and said, O
LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the
LORD, “O
LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
And the
LORD heard the voice of
Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
And the
LORD listened to the voice of
Elijah, and the child’s life returned to him, and he lived.
And the woman said to
Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the
LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Then the woman said to
Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the
LORD from your mouth is truth.”
And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the
LORD came to
Elijah in the third year, saying, Go,
shew thyself unto
Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
After a long time, in the third year of the
drought, the word of the
LORD came to
Elijah: “Go and present
yourself to
Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”
And
Ahab called
Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now
Obadiah feared the
LORD greatly:
and
Ahab summoned
Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now
Obadiah greatly feared the
LORD,
For it was so, when
Jezebel cut off the prophets of the
LORD, that
Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and
hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
for when
Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the
LORD,
Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and water.)
And as
Obadiah was in the way, behold,
Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my
lord Elijah?
Now as
Obadiah went on his way,
Elijah suddenly met him. When
Obadiah recognized him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my
lord Elijah?”
And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy
lord, Behold,
Elijah is here.
“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘
Elijah is here!’”
As the
LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom,
whither my
lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
As surely as the
LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my
lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation
swear that they had not found you.
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy
lord, Behold,
Elijah is here.
And now you say, ‘Go tell your master that
Elijah is here!’
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the
LORD shall carry thee
whither I know not; and so when I come and tell
Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall
slay me: but I thy servant fear the
LORD from my youth.
I do not know where the Spirit of the
LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell
Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the
LORD from my youth.
Was it not told my
lord what I did when
Jezebel slew the prophets of the
LORD, how I
hid an hundred men of the
LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
Was it not reported to my
lord what I did when
Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the
LORD? I
hid a hundred prophets of the
LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and water.
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy
lord, Behold,
Elijah is here: and he shall
slay me.
And now you say, ‘Go tell your
lord that
Elijah is here!’ He will kill me!”
And
Elijah said, As the
LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely
shew myself unto him to day.
Then
Elijah said, “As surely as the
LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to
Ahab today.”
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have
forsaken the commandments of the
LORD, and thou hast followed
Baalim.
“I have not troubled Israel,”
Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have
forsaken the commandments of the
LORD and have followed the Baals.
And
Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long
halt ye between two opinions? if the
LORD be God, follow him: but if
Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Then
Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the
LORD is God, follow Him. But if
Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.
Then said
Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the
LORD; but
Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Then
Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the
LORD, but
Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”
And
Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the
LORD that was broken down.
Then
Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the
LORD that had been
torn down.
And
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the
LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
And
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the
LORD had come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the
LORD: and he made a
trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
And with the stones,
Elijah built an altar in the name of the
LORD. Then he
dug a
trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that
Elijah the prophet came near, and said,
LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
At the time of the evening sacrifice,
Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O
LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”
Then the fire of the
LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and
licked up the water that was in the
trench.
Then the fire of the
LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it
licked up the water in the
trench.
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
And the hand of the
LORD was on
Elijah; and he
girded up his loins, and ran before
Ahab to the entrance of
Jezreel.
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O
LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough,
LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
And he came thither unto a cave, and
lodged there; and, behold, the word of the
LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
There
Elijah entered a cave and spent the night. And the word of the
LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the
LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the
LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the
LORD. And, behold, the
LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and
brake in pieces the rocks before the
LORD; but the
LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an
earthquake; but the
LORD was not in the
earthquake:
Then the
LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the
LORD. Behold, the
LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind
tore into the mountains and
shattered the rocks before the
LORD, but the
LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake, but the
LORD was not in the
earthquake.
And after the
earthquake a fire; but the
LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
After the
earthquake there was a fire, but the
LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice.
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the
LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the
LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And the
LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest,
anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then the
LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to
anoint Hazael as king over
Aram.
And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
And the king of Israel replied, “Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.”
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-
hadad, Tell my
lord the king, All that thou
didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
So
Ahab answered the messengers of Ben-
hadad, “Tell my
lord the king, ‘All that you demanded of your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” So the messengers departed and relayed the message to Ben-
hadad.
And, behold, there came a prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the
LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the
LORD.
Meanwhile a prophet approached
Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the
LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the
LORD.’”
And
Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the
LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
“By whom?”
Ahab asked. And the prophet replied, “This is what the
LORD says: ‘By the young officers of the district governors.’” “Who will start the battle?” asked
Ahab. “You will,” answered the prophet.
