He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
who frees me from my enemies. You
exalt me above my foes; You
rescue me from violent men.
Now these be the last words of David. David the son of
Jesse said, and the
man who was raised up on high, the
anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet
psalmist of Israel, said,
These are the last words of David: “The
oracle of David son of
Jesse, the
oracle of the
man raised on high, the one
anointed by the God of Jacob, and the sweet
psalmist of Israel:
But the
man that shall touch them must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a
spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
The
man who touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a
spear. The fire burns them to ashes in the place where they lie.”
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done
many acts, he
slew two
lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and
slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a
man of
valor from Kabzeel, a
man of
many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a
snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a goodly
man: and the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge
man. Although the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
And
Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how
many soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why
doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
But
Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his
mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of
man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly
man; and his mother bare him after
Absalom.
(His father had never once
reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?” Adonijah was also very handsome, born next after
Absalom.)
And while he yet spake, behold,
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a
valiant man, and bringest good
tidings.
As he was speaking, suddenly
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you are a
man of
valor. You must be bringing good news.”
And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.
And Solomon said, If he will
shew himself a worthy
man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die.”
I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and
shew thyself a
man;
“I am about to go the way of all the earth. So be strong and prove
yourself a
man.
That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take
heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a
man on the throne of Israel.
and so that the LORD may
fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take
heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a
man on the throne of Israel.’
Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise
man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise
man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray head down to
Sheol in blood.”
And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
“The sentence is fair,” Shimei replied. “Your servant will do as my lord the king has spoken.” And Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal.
And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided
victuals for the king and his household: each
man his month in a year made provision.
Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel to provide food for the king and his household. Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,
Judah and Israel were
many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making
merry.
The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, and they were eating and drinking and
rejoicing.
And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every
man under his vine and under his fig tree, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, all the days of Solomon.
Throughout the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel dwelt securely from
Dan to
Beersheba, each
man under his own vine and his own fig tree.
And those officers provided
victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every
man in his month: they lacked nothing.
Each month the governors in turn provided food for King Solomon and all who came to his table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
Barley also and straw for the horses and
dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every
man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley and straw for the
chariot horses and other horses.
He was a widow’s son of the tribe of
Naphtali, and his father was a
man of Tyre, a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and
cunning to work all works in brass. And he came to king Solomon, and wrought all his work.
He was the son of a widow from the tribe of
Naphtali, and his father was a
man of Tyre, a
craftsman in bronze. Huram had great skill, understanding, and knowledge for every kind of bronze work. So he came to King Solomon and carried out all his work.
And the work of the bases was on this manner: they had borders, and the borders were between the ledges:
This was the design of the stands: They had side panels attached to uprights,
After this manner he made the ten bases: all of them had one casting, one measure, and one size.
In this way he made the ten stands, each with the same casting, dimensions, and shape.
And Solomon left all the vessels
unweighed, because they were exceeding
many: neither was the weight of the brass found out.
Solomon left all these articles
unweighed, because there were so
many. The weight of the bronze could not be determined.
And king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel who had assembled with him sacrificed so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered.
Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a
man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take
heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk before Me as you have done.’
If any
man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to
swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house:
When a
man sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this temple,
Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants,
condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and
justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.
then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants,
condemning the wicked
man by bringing down on his own head what he has done, and
justifying the righteous
man by rewarding him according to his righteousness.
What prayer and
supplication soever be made by any
man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every
man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—
Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and
forgive, and do, and give to every
man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)
be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You
forgive and act, and repay each
man according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of all men—
If they sin against thee, (for there is no
man that sinneth not,) and thou be
angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away
captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;
When they sin against You—for there is no one who does not sin—and You become
angry with them and deliver them to an enemy who takes them as
captives to his own land, whether far or near,
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
then I will establish your royal throne over Israel
forever, as I promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a
man on the throne of Israel.’
And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.
Year after year, each
visitor would bring his tribute: articles of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.
But king Solomon loved
many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites,
Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and
Hittites;
King Solomon, however, loved
many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh—women of Moab,
Ammon,
Edom, and
Sidon, as well as Hittite women.
And the
man Jeroboam was a mighty
man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young
man that he was
industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
Now
Jeroboam was a mighty
man of
valor. So when Solomon noticed that the young
man was
industrious, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the house of Joseph.
But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every
man to his house; for this thing is from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
And, behold, there came a
man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto
Bethel: and
Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
Suddenly, as
Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a
man of God from Judah to
Bethel by the word of the LORD.
And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
That day the man of God gave a sign, saying, “The LORD has spoken this sign: ‘Surely the altar will be split apart, and the ashes upon it will be poured out.’”
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the
man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the
man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And the king answered and said unto the
man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the
man of God
besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the
man of God, “
Intercede with the LORD your God and pray that my hand may be restored.” So the
man of God
interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.
And the king said unto the
man of God, Come home with me, and refresh
thyself, and I will give thee a reward.
Then the king said to the
man of God, “Come home with me and refresh
yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
And the
man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to
Bethel.
So the
man of God went another way and did not return by the way he had come to
Bethel.
Now there dwelt an old prophet in
Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the
man of God had done that day in
Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
Now a certain old prophet was living in
Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the deeds that the
man of God had done that day in
Bethel. They also told their father the words that the
man had spoken to the king.
And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.
And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”
And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
But the man replied, “I cannot return with you or eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
but the
man of God went back with him,
ate bread in his house, and
drank water.
And he
cried unto the
man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the prophet
cried out to the
man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have
defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,
And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had
drunk, that he
saddled for him the
ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And after the
man of God had finished eating and drinking, the old prophet who had brought him back
saddled the
donkey for him.
And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the
man of God, who was
disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath
torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.
When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the
man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion, and it has
mauled him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to him.”
And the prophet took up the
carcase of the
man of God, and laid it upon the
ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to
mourn and to
bury him.
So the old prophet lifted up the body of the
man of God, laid it on the
donkey, and brought it back to his own city to
mourn for him and
bury him.
And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then
bury me in the
sepulchre wherein the
man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
After he had buried him, the prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you must
bury me in the tomb where the
man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones,
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a
man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
And she went and did according to the saying of
Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat
many days.
So she went and did according to the word of
Elijah, and there was food every day for
Elijah and the woman and her household.
And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou
man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O
man of God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And the woman said to
Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a
man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Then the woman said to
Elijah, “Now I know that you are a
man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth.”
And it came to pass after
many days, that the word of the LORD came to
Elijah in the third year, saying, Go,
shew thyself unto
Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
After a long time, in the third year of the
drought, the word of the LORD came to
Elijah: “Go and present
yourself to
Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”
And
Elijah said unto the prophets of
Baal, Choose you one
bullock for
yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are
many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
Then
Elijah said to the prophets of
Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for
yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”
And they
cried aloud, and cut themselves after their
manner with
knives and lancets, till the blood
gushed out upon them.
So they
shouted louder and cut themselves with
knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood
gushed over them.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a
man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy
chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a
man’s hand rising from the sea.” And
Elijah replied, “Go and tell
Ahab, ‘Prepare your
chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
And it was so, when
Elijah heard it, that he
wrapped his face in his
mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
When
Elijah heard it, he
wrapped his face in his
cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
So he departed thence, and found
Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was
plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the
twelfth: and
Elijah passed by him, and cast his
mantle upon him.
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this man is looking for trouble, for when he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”
And they
slew every one his
man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the
horsemen.
and each one struck down his
opponent. So the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-
hadad king of
Aram escaped on
horseback with the cavalry.
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
So do this: Dismiss all the kings from their positions and replace them with other officers.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And a certain
man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the
man refused to
smite him.
Meanwhile, by the word of the LORD, one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me, please!” But the man refused to strike him.
Then he found another
man, and said,
Smite me, I pray thee. And the
man smote him, so that in
smiting he wounded him.
Then the prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please!” So the man struck him and wounded him,
And as the king passed by, he
cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a
man turned aside, and brought a
man unto me, and said, Keep this
man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
As the king passed by, he
cried out to the king: “Your servant had marched out into the middle of the battle, when suddenly a
man came over with a
captive and told me, ‘Guard this
man! If he goes missing for any reason, your life will be exchanged for his life, or you will
weigh out a talent of silver.’
And as thy servant was
busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be;
thyself hast decided it.
But while your servant was
busy here and there, the
man disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you have pronounced it on
yourself.”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs
licked the blood of
Naboth shall dogs
lick thy blood, even thine.
Tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘Have you not murdered a
man and seized his land?’ Then tell him that this is also what the LORD says: ‘In the place where the dogs
licked up the blood of
Naboth, there also the dogs will
lick up your blood—
yes, yours!’”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one
man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one
man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And the king said unto him, How
many times shall I
adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to him, “How
many times must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every
man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
And the LORD said, Who shall
persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead? And one said on this
manner, and another said on that
manner.
And the LORD said, ‘Who will
entice Ahab to march up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead?’ And one suggested this, and another that.
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I come in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And a certain
man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his
chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain
man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And there went a
proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every
man to his city, and every
man to his own country.
As the sun was setting, the cry
rang out in the army: “Every
man to his own city, and every
man to his own land!”
And they said unto him, There came a
man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
They replied, “A
man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’”
And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?
The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?”
And they answered him, He was an
hairy man, and
girt with a
girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is
Elijah the Tishbite.
“He was a
hairy man,” they answered, “with a leather belt around his
waist.” “It was
Elijah the Tishbite,” said the king.
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
Then King
Ahaziah sent to
Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to
Elijah, who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “
Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’”
And
Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a
man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a
man of God, may fire come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
So the king sent to
Elijah another captain with his fifty men. And the captain said to
Elijah, “
Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down at once!’”
And
Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a
man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Again
Elijah replied, “If I am a
man of God, may fire come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O
man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
begged him, “
Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight.
And
Elijah took his
mantle, and
wrapped it together, and
smote the waters, and they were divided
hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
And
Elijah took his
cloak, rolled it up, and struck the waters, which parted to the right and to the left, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
He took up also the
mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
And he took the
mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of
Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the waters, they parted
hither and thither: and
Elisha went over.
Then he took the
cloak of
Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters. “Where now is the LORD, the God of
Elijah?” he asked. And when he had struck the waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and
Elisha crossed over.
And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every
man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof;
howbeit the slingers went about it, and
smote it.
They destroyed the cities, and each
man threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place, but men with
slings surrounded it and attacked it as well.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt. Then you and your sons can live on the remainder.”
