And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know that the one who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said,
Nay, my lord, thou
man of God, do not lie unto thine
handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not lie to your
maidservant, O
man of God.”
And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.
And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God. Then she shut the door and went out.
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the
man of God, and come again.
And the woman called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the
man of God and return.”
So she went and came unto the
man of God to mount
Carmel. And it came to pass, when the
man of God saw her
afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold,
yonder is that Shunammite:
So she set out and went to the
man of God at Mount
Carmel. When the
man of God saw her at a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, there is the Shunammite woman.
And when she came to the
man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the
man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the
man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away, but the
man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
Then he said to Gehazi,
Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any
man,
salute him not; and if any
salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.
So
Elisha said to Gehazi, “
Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand, and go! If you meet
anyone, do not
greet him, and if
anyone greets you, do not answer him. Then lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his
lap full, and came and
shred them into the pot of
pottage: for they knew them not.
One of them went out to the field to gather herbs, and he found a wild vine from which he gathered as
many wild gourds as his garment could hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of
stew, though no one knew what they were.
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the
pottage, that they
cried out, and said, O thou
man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.
And they poured it out for the men to eat, but when they tasted the
stew they
cried out, “There is death in the pot, O
man of God!” And they could not eat it.
And there came a
man from
Baal-shalisha, and brought the
man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty
loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the
husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.
Now a
man from
Baal-shalishah came to the
man of God with a
sack of twenty
loaves of barley bread from the first ripe grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha.
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great
man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty
man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a great
man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty
man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this
man doth send unto me to recover a
man of his
leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he
tore his clothes and asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this
man expects me to cure a
leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
And it was so, when
Elisha the
man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the
man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your clothes? Please let the
man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
Then went he down, and
dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the
man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
So
Naaman went down and
dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the
man of God, and his flesh was restored and became like that of a little child, and he was clean.
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the
man of God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the
man of God, said, Behold, my master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the
man of God, said, “Look, my master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the
man turned again from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
But
Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the
man got down from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?
Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
Please let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said
Elisha.
And the
man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did
swim.
“Where did it fall?” asked the
man of God. And when he showed him the place, the
man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron
float.
Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.
“Lift it out,” he said, and the man reached out his hand and took it.
And the
man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying,
Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
And the king of Israel sent to the place which the
man of God told him and
warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.
So the king of Israel sent word to the place the
man of God had pointed out. Time and again
Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
And when the servant of the
man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and
chariots. And his servant said unto him,
Alas, my master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the
man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and
chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked
Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
And
Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young
man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and
chariots of fire round about
Elisha.
Then
Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young
man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and
chariots of fire all around
Elisha.
And
Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the
man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.
And
Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the
man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a
man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the
man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
But the officer on whose arm the king
leaned answered the
man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it.”
And they rose up in the
twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the
uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no
man there.
So they arose at
twilight and went to the camp of the Arameans. But when they came to the outskirts of the camp, there was not a
man to be found.
So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no
man there, neither voice of
man, but horses
tied, and
asses tied, and the tents as they were.
So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city, saying, “We went to the
Aramean camp and no one was there—not a trace—only
tethered horses and
donkeys, and the tents were
intact.”
And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he
leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people
trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the
man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
Now the king had appointed the officer on whose arm he
leaned to be in charge of the gate, but the people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died, just as the
man of God had
foretold when the king had come to him.
And it came to pass as the
man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a
shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a
shekel, shall be to
morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:
It happened just as the
man of God had told the king: “About this time
tomorrow at the gate of Samaria, two seahs of barley will sell for a
shekel, and a
seah of fine flour will sell for a
shekel.”
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the
man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”
And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the
man of God: and she went with her household, and
sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
So the woman had proceeded to do as the
man of God had
instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the
man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the
man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great things
Elisha has done.”
And
Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The
man of God is come
hither.
Then
Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-
hadad king of
Aram was sick, and the king was told, “The
man of God has come here.”
And the king said unto
Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the
man of God, and
enquire of the LORD by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So the king said to
Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the
man of God, and inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
Elisha fixed his
gaze steadily on him until
Hazael became uncomfortable. Then the
man of God began to
weep.
So the young
man, even the young
man the prophet, went to
Ramoth-
gilead.
Then
Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this
mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the
man, and his communication.
When
Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this
madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their
babble,” he replied.
Then they hasted, and took every
man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and
blew with
trumpets, saying,
Jehu is king.
Quickly, each
man took his garment and put it under
Jehu on the bare steps. Then they
blew the ram’s horn and proclaimed, “
Jehu is king!”
And it came to pass, when
Joram saw
Jehu, that he said, Is it peace,
Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother
Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so
many?
And
Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of
Baal came, so that there was not a
man left that came not. And they came into the house of
Baal; and the house of
Baal was full from one end to another.
Then
Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of
Baal came; there was not a
man who failed to show. They entered the temple of
Baal, and it was filled from end to end.
From Jordan eastward, all the land of
Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the
Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river
Arnon, even
Gilead and
Bashan.
And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
You must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who approaches the ranks must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.
And the guards stood with weapons in hand surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a
pillar, as the
manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and
blew with
trumpets: and
Athaliah rent her clothes, and
cried, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by the
pillar, according to the custom. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason! Treason!”
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
Let the priests take it to them, every
man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house,
wheresoever any breach shall be found.
Let every priest receive it from his
constituency, and let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”
And the
man of God was
wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt
smite Syria but
thrice.
But the
man of God was
angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down
Aram until you had put an end to it. But now you will strike down
Aram only three times.”
And it came to pass, as they were
burying a
man, that, behold, they
spied a band of men; and they cast the
man into the
sepulchre of
Elisha: and when the
man was let down, and touched the bones of
Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.
Once, as the Israelites were
burying a
man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders, so they threw the
man’s body into
Elisha’s tomb. And as soon as his body touched the bones of
Elisha, the
man was revived and stood up on his feet.
But the children of the murderers he
slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every
man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.
And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his home.
And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land.
Menahem exacted this money from each of the wealthy men of Israel—fifty shekels of silver from each man—to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.
Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the
manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they
slay them, because they know not the
manner of the God of the land.
So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off.”
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods according to the customs of the nations from which they had been carried away.
Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
To this day they are still practicing their former customs. None of them worship the LORD or observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments that the LORD gave the descendants of Jacob, whom He named Israel.
Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this
bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a
man lean, it will go into his hand, and
pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
Look now, you are trusting in Egypt, that
splintered reed of a staff that will
pierce the hand of
anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every
man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his
cistern:
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
By the messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my
chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my
many chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
And
Hezekiah rested with his fathers, and his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hephzi-
bah.
Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. His mother’s name was Hephzibah.
And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, In Jerusalem will I put my name.
Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem I will put My Name.”
And he set a
graven image of the
grove that he had made in the house, of which the LORD said to David, and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made and set it up in the temple, of which the LORD had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name
forever.
But they
hearkened not: and
Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.
But the people did not
listen and
Manasseh led them
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
Because
Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the
Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols:
“Since
Manasseh king of Judah has committed all these abominations, acting more wickedly than the
Amorites who preceded him, and with his idols has caused Judah to sin,
And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the
plummet of the house of
Ahab: and I will
wipe Jerusalem as a
man wipeth a
dish,
wiping it, and turning it
upside down.
I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the
plumb line used against the house of
Ahab, and I will
wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes out a
bowl—
wiping it and turning it
upside down.
Moreover
Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin
wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
Moreover,
Manasseh shed so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to end, in addition to the sin that he had caused Judah to commit, doing evil in the sight of the LORD.
Now the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he
sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, along with all his accomplishments and the sin that he committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And
Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh did.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh had done.
And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and
defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beer-
sheba, and
brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a
man’s left hand at the gate of the city.
Then
Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and
desecrated the high places, from Geba to
Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He
tore down the high places of the gates at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which was to the left of the city gate.
And he
defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of
Hinnom, that no
man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to
Molech.
He also
desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-
hinnom so that no one could sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire to
Molech.
And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of
Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which
Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and
brake them down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the
brook Kidron.
He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah had set up on the roof near the upper chamber of
Ahaz, and the altars that
Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the house of the LORD. The king
pulverized them there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley.
And as
Josiah turned himself, he
spied the
sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the
sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and
polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the
man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
And as
Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the
hillside, and he sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar to
defile it, according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the
man of God who had
foretold these things.
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the
man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the
man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
“Let him rest,” said
Josiah. “Do not let
anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed, along with those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath,
wherewith his anger was
kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that
Manasseh had
provoked him
withal.
Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the
fury of His burning anger, which was
kindled against Judah because of all that
Manasseh had done to
provoke Him to anger.
Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of
Manasseh, according to all that he did;
Surely this happened to Judah at the LORD’s command, to remove them from His presence because of the sins of
Manasseh and all that he had done,
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man’s house burnt he with fire.
He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem—every
significant building.
The sons of Shobal; Alian, and
Manahath, and
Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah.
The sons of Shobal: Alvan,
Manahath,
Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah.
And Shobal the father of Kirjath-jearim had sons; Haroeh, and half of the Manahethites.
These were the descendants of Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim:
And the families of Kirjath-jearim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites.
Haroeh, half the Manahathites, and the clans of Kiriath-jearim—the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites.
The sons of Salma;
Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, Ataroth, the house of
Joab, and half of the
Manahethites, the Zorites.
The descendants of Salma:
And the families of the
scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the
Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.
Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-
joab, half the
Manahathites, the Zorites, and the clans of the
scribes who lived at Jabez—the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the
Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.
And Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters; but his brethren had not many children, neither did all their family multiply, like to the children of Judah.
Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children, so their whole clan did not become as numerous as the sons of Judah.
The sons of
Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, of
valiant men, men able to bear
buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and
threescore, that went out to the war.
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh had 44,760 warriors—
valiant men who carried the shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for battle.
For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.
and many others fell slain, because the battle belonged to God. And they occupied the land until the exile.
Now the people of the half-tribe of
Manasseh were numerous. They settled in the land from
Bashan to
Baal-
hermon (that is, Senir, also known as Mount
Hermon).
And the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this day.
Their brethren also the Levites were appointed unto all manner of service of the tabernacle of the house of God.
Their fellow Levites were assigned to every kind of service of the tabernacle, the house of God.
And unto the sons of
Kohath, which were left of the family of that tribe, were cities given out of the half tribe, namely, out of the half tribe of
Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.
To the rest of the Kohathites, ten cities were
allotted from the half-tribe of
Manasseh.
And to the sons of Gershom throughout their families out of the tribe of
Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of
Naphtali, and out of the tribe of
Manasseh in
Bashan, thirteen cities.
And out of the half tribe of
Manasseh; Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs, for the family of the
remnant of the sons of
Kohath.
And from the half-tribe of
Manasseh the remaining clans of the Kohathites were given Aner and Bileam, together with their pasturelands.
Unto the sons of Gershom were given out of the family of the half tribe of
Manasseh, Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, and
Ashtaroth with her suburbs:
The Gershomites received the following: From the clan of the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Golan in
Bashan and also
Ashtaroth, together with their pasturelands.
And with them, by their generations, after the house of their fathers, were bands of soldiers for war, six and thirty thousand men: for they had many wives and sons.
Michael,
Obadiah,
Joel, and Isshiah. All five of them were chiefs. In addition to them, according to their
genealogy, they had 36,000 troops for battle, for they had
many wives and children.
