Behold, is it
not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall
weary themselves for very vanity?
Is it
not indeed from the LORD of Hosts that the labor of the people only feeds the fire, and the nations
weary themselves in vain?
Although the fig tree shall
not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no
herd in the stalls:
Though the fig tree does
not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls,
And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.
and those who turn back from following the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and
punish the men that are settled on their
lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will
not do good, neither will he do evil.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and
punish the men settled in
complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do
nothing, either good or bad.’
Therefore their goods shall become a
booty, and their houses a
desolation: they shall also build houses, but
not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but
not drink the wine thereof.
Their wealth will be
plundered and their houses laid waste. They will build houses but
not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but never drink their wine.
Gather
yourselves together,
yea, gather together, O nation
not desired;
Gather
yourselves, gather together, O shameful nation,
She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God.
She
heeded no voice; she accepted no correction. She does
not trust in the LORD; she has
not drawn near to her God.
Her princes are
roaring lions; her judges are evening
wolves, leaving
nothing for the morning.
The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will
not do iniquity: every morning
doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth
not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.
The LORD within her is righteous; He does no wrong. He applies His justice morning by morning; He does
not fail at
dawn, yet the unjust know no shame.
I said, Surely thou
wilt fear me, thou
wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should
not be cut off,
howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me and accept correction.’ Then her dwelling place would
not be cut off
despite all for which I punished her. But they rose early to corrupt all their deeds.
In that day shalt thou
not be
ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast
transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that
rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be
haughty because of my holy mountain.
On that day you will
not be put to shame for any of the deeds by which you have
transgressed against Me. For then I will remove from among you those who
rejoice in their pride, and you will never again be
haughty on My holy mountain.
The
remnant of Israel shall
not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
The
remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies, nor will a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will feed and lie down, with no one to make them
tremble.”
The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.
The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any
harm.
In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou
not: and to
Zion, Let
not thine hands be
slack.
On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do
not fear, O
Zion; do
not let your hands fall
limp.
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.
that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’”
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have
not enough; ye drink, but ye are
not filled with drink; ye
clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a
bag with holes.
You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You
earn wages to put into a
bag pierced through.”
Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’
According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”
I
smote you with blasting and with
mildew and with
hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned
not to me, saith the LORD.
I struck you—all the work of your hands—with
blight,
mildew, and
hail, but you did
not turn to Me, declares the LORD.
Is the seed yet in the
barn?
yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the
pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath
not brought forth: from this day will I
bless you.
Is there still seed in the
barn? The vine, the fig, the
pomegranate, and the olive tree have
not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will
bless you.”
Be ye
not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did
not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do
not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways and deeds.’ But they did
not listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did
not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long
wilt thou
not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these
threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of the LORD said, “How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been
angry these seventy years?”
And the LORD said to
Satan: “The LORD rebukes you,
Satan! Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is
not this man a
firebrand snatched from the fire?”
Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered.
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto
Zerubbabel, saying,
Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel:
Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts.
And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what these are?” he inquired. “No, my lord,” I replied.
And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did
not ye eat for
yourselves, and drink for
yourselves?
And when you were eating and drinking, were you
not doing so simply for
yourselves?
Should ye
not hear the words which the LORD hath
cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?
Are these
not the words that the LORD proclaimed through the earlier prophets, when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were
populous and prosperous, and the Negev and the foothills were inhabited?’”
And
oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
Do
not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. And do
not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’
But they refused to
hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should
not hear.
But they refused to pay attention and turned a
stubborn shoulder; they stopped up their ears from hearing.
Yea, they made their hearts as an
adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.
They made their hearts like flint and would
not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of Hosts.
Therefore it is come to pass, that as he
cried, and they would
not hear; so they
cried, and I would
not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:
And just as I had called and they would
not listen, so when they called I would
not listen, says the LORD of Hosts.
But I scattered them with a
whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew
not. Thus the land was
desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land
desolate.
But I scattered them with a
whirlwind among all the nations that they had
not known, and the land was left
desolate behind them so that no one could come or go. Thus they turned the pleasant land into a
desolation.”
But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts.
But now I will
not treat the
remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a
curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear
not, but let your hands be strong.
As you have been a
curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do
not be afraid; let your hands be strong.”
For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to
punish you, when your fathers
provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I
repented not:
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Just as I resolved to bring
disaster upon you when your fathers
provoked Me to anger, and I did
not relent,” says the LORD of Hosts,
So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
“so now I have resolved to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid.
And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I
hate, saith the LORD.
do
not plot evil in your hearts against your
neighbor, and do
not love to
swear falsely, for I
hate all these things,” declares the LORD.
Ashkelon shall see it, and fear;
Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and
Ekron; for her expectation shall be
ashamed; and the king shall perish from
Gaza, and Ashkelon shall
not be inhabited.
Ashkelon will see and fear;
Gaza will
writhe in
agony, as will
Ekron, for her hope will wither. There will cease to be a king in
Gaza, and Ashkelon will be uninhabited.
And I will
strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had
not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.
I will
strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have
compassion on them, and they will be as though I had
not rejected them. For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them.
I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of
Gilead and
Lebanon; and place shall
not be found for them.
I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them to
Gilead and
Lebanon until no more room is found for them.
Whose possessors
slay them, and hold themselves
not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own
shepherds pity them
not.
whose buyers slaughter them without
remorse. Those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, for I am rich!’ Even their own
shepherds have no
compassion on them.
For I will no more
pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour’s hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall
smite the land, and out of their hand I will
not deliver them.
For I will no longer have
compassion on the people of the land, declares the LORD, but behold, I will cause each man to fall into the hands of his
neighbor and his king, who will
devastate the land, and I will
not deliver it from their hands.”
Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another.
Then I said, “I will no longer
shepherd you. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish; and let those who remain
devour one another’s flesh.”
And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if
not,
forbear. So they
weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
Then I told them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if
not, keep them.” So they
weighed out my wages, thirty pieces of silver.
For, lo, I will raise up a
shepherd in the land, which shall
not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor
heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and
tear their claws in pieces.
For behold, I will raise up a
shepherd in the land who will neither care for the lost, nor seek the young, nor
heal the broken, nor
sustain the healthy, but he will
devour the flesh of the choice sheep and
tear off their
hooves.
The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do
not magnify themselves against Judah.
The LORD will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and of the people of Jerusalem may not be greater than that of Judah.
And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet
prophesy, then his father and his mother that
begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt
not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that
begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.
And if
anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall
not remain alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will
pierce him through.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be
ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath
prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to
deceive:
And on that day every prophet who prophesies will be
ashamed of his vision, and he will
not put on a
hairy cloak in order to
deceive.
But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an
husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.
He will say, ‘I am not a prophet; I work the land, for I was purchased as a servant in my youth.’
For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses
rifled, and the women
ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall
not be cut off from the city.
For I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem, and the city will be captured, the houses
looted, and the women
ravished. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will
not be removed from the city.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:
On that day there will be no light, no cold or
frost.
But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.
It will be a day known only to the LORD, without day or night; but when evening comes, there will be light.
And it shall be, that
whoso will
not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them.
And if the family of Egypt go
not up, and come
not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague,
wherewith the LORD will
smite the heathen that come
not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
And if the people of Egypt will
not go up and enter in, then the rain will
not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do
not go up to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
This will be the punishment of Egypt and of all the nations that do
not go up to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was
not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,
“I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask, “How have You loved us?” “Was
not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the LORD. “Yet Jacob I have loved,
And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it
not evil? and if ye offer the
lame and sick, is it
not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.
When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it
not wrong? And when you present the
lame and sick ones, is it
not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor?” asks the LORD of Hosts.
If ye will
not hear, and if ye will
not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a
curse upon you, and I will
curse your blessings:
yea, I have
cursed them already, because ye do
not lay it to heart.
If you do
not listen, and if you do
not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the LORD of Hosts, “I will send a
curse among you, and I will
curse your blessings.
Yes, I have already begun to
curse them, because you are
not taking it to heart.
The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was
not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and
equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.
Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
“So I in turn have made you
despised and
humiliated before all the people, because you have
not kept My ways, but have shown
partiality in matters of the law.”
Have we
not all one father? hath
not one God created us? why do we deal
treacherously every man against his brother, by
profaning the covenant of our fathers?
Do we
not all have one Father? Did
not one God
create us? Why then do we break faith with one another so as to
profane the covenant of our fathers?
And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with
weeping, and with crying out,
insomuch that he regardeth
not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.
And this is another thing you do: You cover the altar of the LORD with tears, with
weeping and
groaning, because He no longer regards your offerings or receives them
gladly from your hands.
And did
not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take
heed to your spirit, and let none deal
treacherously against the wife of his youth.
Has
not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard
yourselves in your spirit and do
not break faith with the wife of your youth.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take
heed to your spirit, that ye deal
not treacherously.
“For I
hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard
yourselves in your spirit and do
not break faith.
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that
oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear
not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who
defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do
not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts.
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
“Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’
Bring ye all the
tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now
herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will
not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall
not be room enough to receive it.
Bring the full
tithe into the
storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will
not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.
And I will
rebuke the
devourer for your sakes, and he shall
not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will
rebuke the
devourer for you, so that it will
not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will
not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Hosts.
And now we call the proud happy;
yea, they that work wickedness are set up;
yea, they that
tempt God are even delivered.
So now we call the
arrogant blessed.
Not only do evildoers
prosper, they even test God and escape.’”
Then shall ye return, and
discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him
not.
So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an
oven; and all the proud,
yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be
stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the
arrogant and every
evildoer will be
stubble; the day is coming when I will set them
ablaze,” says the LORD of Hosts. “
Not a root or branch will be left to them.”
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and
not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away
privily.
Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to
divorce her quietly.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
But after he had
pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do
not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
And knew her
not till she had brought forth her
firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.
And thou
Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art
not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
‘But you,
Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the
shepherd of My people Israel.’”
And being
warned of God in a dream that they should
not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
And having been
warned in a dream
not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.
But when he heard that
Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither:
notwithstanding, being
warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of
Galilee:
But when he learned that
Archelaus was reigning in
Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And having been
warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of
Galilee,
And think
not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And do
not presume to say to
yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
And now also the
axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth
not forth good fruit is
hewn down, and cast into the fire.
The
axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does
not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
I indeed
baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose
shoes I am
not worthy to bear: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
I
baptize you with water for
repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I, whose
sandals I am
not worthy to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast
thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou
dash thy foot against a stone.
“If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw
Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will
not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt
not tempt the Lord thy God.
Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for
nothing, but to be cast out, and to be
trodden under foot of men.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its
savor, how can it be made
salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and
trampled by men.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Do
not think that I have come to
abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have
not come to
abolish them, but to
fulfill them.
For
verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one
jot or one
tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away,
not a single
jot,
not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt
not kill; and
whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do
not murder’ and ‘
Anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’
Truly I tell you, you will
not get out until you have paid the last
penny.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt
not commit
adultery:
You have heard that it was said, ‘Do
not commit
adultery.’
And if thy right eye
offend thee,
pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should be cast into
hell.
If your right eye causes you to sin,
gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into
hell.
And if thy right hand
offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should be cast into
hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into
hell.
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt
not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do
not break your oath, but
fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
But I say unto you,
Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
But I tell you
not to
swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
Neither shalt thou
swear by thy head, because thou canst
not make one hair white or black.
Nor should you
swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
But I say unto you, That ye resist
not evil: but
whosoever shall
smite thee on thy right
cheek, turn to him the other also.
But I tell you
not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right
cheek, turn to him the other also;
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would
borrow of thee turn
not thou away.
Give to the one who asks you, and do
not turn away from the one who wants to
borrow from you.
