Abel,

So the king said to
Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their
number.”
Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against
Joab, and against the captains of the host. And
Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to
number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against
Joab and against the commanders of the army. So
Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to count the troops of Israel.
And
Joab gave up the sum of the

smote him after that he had
numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have

foolishly.
After David had
numbered the troops, his conscience was
stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have
sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”

number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and
chariot for
chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he
hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
And you must raise an army like the one you have lost—horse for horse and
chariot for
chariot—so we can fight the Israelites on the plain, where we will surely prevail.” And the king approved their plan and acted accordingly.

valiant men of might in their generations; whose
number was in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred.
The sons of
Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Shemuel, the heads of their families. In the days of David, 22,600 descendants of

genealogies as mighty men of
valor.
And the
number of them, after their
genealogy by their generations, heads of the house of the fathers, mighty men of valour, was twenty thousand and two hundred.
Zemirah,
Joash,
Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth,

valor.
All these were the children of Asher, heads of their father’s house, choice and mighty men of valour, chief of the princes. And the

Dan; and bring the

And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be
numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
