He sent
redemption unto his
people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and
reverend is his name.
That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.
to seat them with nobles, with the princes of His people.
When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
When Israel departed from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.
I will
fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His
people.
I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,
I will
fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all His
people,
O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
Praise the LORD, all you nations!
Extol Him, all you
peoples!
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
As the mountains
surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His
people, both now and forevermore.
He gave their land as an inheritance, as a
heritage to His
people Israel.
For the LORD will judge his
people, and he will
repent himself concerning his servants.
To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.
He led His
people through the wilderness. His loving devotion endures
forever.
When their judges are overthrown in
stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
When their rulers are thrown down from the cliffs, the
people will
listen to my words, for they are pleasant.
My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
He is my
steadfast love and my fortress, my
stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues
peoples under me.
Happy is that
people, that is in such a case:
yea, happy is that
people, whose God is the LORD.
Blessed are the people of whom this is so; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.
Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:
kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth,
He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.
He has raised up a horn for His
people, the praise of all His saints, of Israel, a
people near to Him.
Hallelujah!
For the LORD taketh pleasure in his
people: he will
beautify the
meek with salvation.
For the LORD takes pleasure in His
people; He adorns the
afflicted with salvation.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors comes
deliverance.
He that withholdeth corn, the
people shall
curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
The
people will
curse the
hoarder of grain, but blessing will crown the one who sells it.
In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.
A large population is a king’s
splendor, but a lack of subjects is a prince’s ruin.
Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the
people curse, nations shall
abhor him:
Whoever tells the guilty, “You are innocent”—
peoples will
curse him, and nations will
denounce him;
As a
roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor
people.
Like a
roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless
people.
When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.
When the wicked come to power,
people hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous
flourish.
When the righteous are in authority, the
people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the
people mourn.
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the Law.
The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
There is no end of all the
people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not
rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
There is no limit to all the
people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the
people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the
people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the
chariots of Amminadib.
Before I realized it, my desire had set me among the royal
chariots of my
people.
The ox knoweth his owner, and the
ass his master’s
crib: but Israel
doth not know, my
people doth not consider.
The ox knows its owner, and the
donkey its master’s
manger, but Israel does not know; My
people do not understand.”
Ah sinful nation, a
people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have
forsaken the LORD, they have
provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
Alas, O sinful nation, a
people laden with iniquity, a
brood of evildoers, children of
depravity! They have
forsaken the LORD; they have
despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of
Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye
people of
Gomorrah.
Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of
Sodom;
listen to the instruction of our God, you
people of
Gomorrah!
And many
people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of
Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many
peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall
rebuke many
people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Then He will judge between the nations and
arbitrate for many
peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.
Therefore thou hast
forsaken thy
people the house of Jacob, because they be
replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.
For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with influences from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines; they strike hands with the children of foreigners.
And the
people shall be
oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall
behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
The
people will
oppress one another, man against man,
neighbor against
neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
In that day shall he
swear, saying, I will not be an
healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the
people.
On that day he will cry
aloud: “I am not a
healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the
people!”
As for my
people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my
people, they which lead thee cause thee to
err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
Youths
oppress My
people, and women rule over them. O My
people, your guides mislead you; they turn you from your paths.
The LORD standeth up to
plead, and standeth to judge the
people.
The LORD arises to
contend; He stands to judge the
people.
The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his
people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the
vineyard; the
spoil of the poor is in your houses.
The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His
people: “You have
devoured the
vineyard; the
plunder of the poor is in your houses.
What mean ye that ye beat my
people to pieces, and
grind the faces of the poor? saith the LORD GOD of hosts.
Why do you
crush My
people and
grind the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Therefore my
people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are
famished, and their multitude dried up with
thirst.
Therefore is the anger of the LORD
kindled against his
people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath
smitten them: and the hills did
tremble, and their carcases were
torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His
people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains
quake, and the corpses lay like refuse in the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Then said I,
Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a
people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
Then I said: “
Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a
people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.”
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
Make the heart of this
people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be
healed.
Make the hearts of this
people calloused;
deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be
healed.”
And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is
confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his
people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
When it was reported to the house of David that
Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of
Ahaz and his
people trembled like trees in the forest
shaken by the wind.
For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within
threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a
people.
For the head of
Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be
shattered as a
people.
The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since the day Ephraim separated from Judah—He will bring the king of Assyria.”
Forasmuch as this
people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and
rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
“Because this
people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and
rejoiced in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
Associate
yourselves, O ye
people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries:
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces;
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and
instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this
people, saying,
For this is what the LORD has spoken to me with a strong hand,
instructing me not to walk in the way of this
people:
Say ye not, A
confederacy, to all them to whom this
people shall say, A
confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that
peep, and that
mutter: should not a
people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
When men tell you to
consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who
whisper and
mutter, shouldn’t a
people consult their God instead? Why
consult the dead on behalf of the living?
The
people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
The
people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has
dawned.
Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men
rejoice when they divide the
spoil.
You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The
people rejoice before You as they
rejoice at harvest time, as men
rejoice in dividing the
plunder.
And all the
people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and
stoutness of heart,
All the
people will know it— Ephraim and the dwellers of Samaria. With pride and
arrogance of heart they will say:
For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.
But the people did not return to Him who struck them; they did not seek the LORD of Hosts.
For the leaders of this
people cause them to
err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
For those who guide this
people mislead them, and those they mislead are
swallowed up.
Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land
darkened, and the
people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall
spare his brother.
By the wrath of the LORD of Hosts the land is
scorched, and the
people are fuel for the fire. No man even spares his brother.
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my
people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may
rob the fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My
people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
I will send him against an
hypocritical nation, and against the
people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the
spoil, and to take the prey, and to
tread them down like the
mire of the streets.
I will send him against a godless nation; I will
dispatch him against a
people destined for My
rage, to take spoils and seize
plunder, and to
trample them down like clay in the streets.
For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am
prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the
people, and have
robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a
valiant man:
For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, for I am
clever. I have removed the boundaries of nations and
plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers.
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the
people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
For though thy
people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a
remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
Though your
people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea, only a
remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my
people that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My
people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to
flee.
Madmenah flees; the people of Gebim take refuge.
And in that day there shall be a root of
Jesse, which shall stand for an
ensign of the
people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
On that day the Root of
Jesse will stand as a
banner for the
peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the
remnant of his
people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from
Cush, and from
Elam, and from
Shinar, and from
Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the
remnant of His
people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from
Cush, from
Elam, from
Shinar, from
Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
And there shall be an
highway for the
remnant of his
people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
There will be a
highway for the
remnant of His
people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the
people, make mention that his name is
exalted.
and on that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD;
proclaim His name! Make His works known among the
peoples; declare that His name is
exalted.
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great
people; a
tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
Listen, a
tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!
Listen, an
uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is
mobilizing an army for war.
And it shall be as the
chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own
people, and
flee every one into his own land.
Like a
hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a
shepherd, each will return to his own
people, each will
flee to his native land.
And the
people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them
captives, whose
captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
The nations will
escort Israel and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess the nations as menservants and maidservants in the LORD’s land. They will make
captives of their captors and rule over their oppressors.
He who
smote the
people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is
persecuted, and none hindereth.
It struck the
peoples in anger with unceasing blows; it subdued the nations in
rage with relentless persecution.
Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy
people: the seed of evildoers shall never be
renowned.
You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.
That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains
tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
I will break Assyria in My land; I will
trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My
people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded
Zion, and the poor of his
people shall trust in it.
What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded
Zion, where His
afflicted people will find refuge.”
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many
people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
Woe to the multitude of many
people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the
rushing of nations, that make a
rushing like the
rushing of mighty waters!
That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a
people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden down, whose land the rivers have
spoiled!
which sends couriers by sea, in
papyrus vessels on the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a
people tall and smooth-
skinned, to a
people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an
ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a
trumpet, hear ye.
All you
people of the world and dwellers of the earth, when a
banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it; when a ram’s horn sounds, you will hear it.
In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a
people scattered and
peeled, and from a
people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have
spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount
Zion.
At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— from a
people tall and smooth-
skinned, from a
people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts.
Whom the LORD of hosts shall
bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my
people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
The LORD of Hosts will
bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt My
people, Assyria My
handiwork, and Israel My inheritance.”
O my
threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
O my
people,
crushed on the
threshing floor, I tell you what I have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel.
Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will
weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the
spoiling of the daughter of my
people.
Therefore I said, “Turn away from me, let me
weep bitterly! Do not try to
console me over the destruction of the daughter of my
people.”
Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this
people was not,
til the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin.
Look at the land of the Chaldeans— a
people now of no account. The Assyrians destined it for the desert creatures; they set up their siege towers and
stripped its palaces. They brought it to ruin.
And it shall be, as with the
people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the
maid, so with her
mistress; as with the
buyer, so with the seller; as with the
lender, so with the
borrower; as with the taker of
usury, so with the giver of
usury to him.
The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the
haughty people of the earth do
languish.
The earth mourns and
withers; the world languishes and fades; the
exalted of the earth waste away.
When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the
people, there shall be as the
shaking of an olive tree, and as the
gleaning grapes when the
vintage is done.
So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a
gleaning after a
grape harvest.
Therefore shall the strong
people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.
Therefore, a strong
people will honor You. The cities of
ruthless nations will
revere You.
And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all
people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the
lees, of fat things full of
marrow, of wines on the
lees well refined.
On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a
banquet for all the
peoples, a feast of aged wine, of choice meat, of finely aged wine.
And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all
people, and the
vail that is spread over all nations.
On this mountain He will
swallow up the
shroud that enfolds all
peoples, the sheet that covers all nations;
He will
swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will
wipe away tears from off all faces; and the
rebuke of his
people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.
He will
swallow up death
forever. The Lord GOD will
wipe away the tears from every face and remove the disgrace of His
people from the whole earth. For the LORD has spoken.
With my soul have I desired thee in the night;
yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the
people of the world learn righteousness.
LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be
ashamed for their
envy at the
people;
yea, the fire of thine enemies shall
devour them.
O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your
people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will
consume them!
Come, my
people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide
thyself as it were for a little moment, until the
indignation be overpast.
Go, my
people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide
yourselves a little while until the wrath has passed.
When the boughs thereof are
withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a
people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will
shew them no favour.
When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for
kindling; for this is a
people without understanding. Therefore their Maker has no
compassion on them, and their
Creator shows them no favor.
