And I will take the
remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an
execration, and an
astonishment, and a
curse, and a
reproach.
And I will take away the
remnant of Judah who have resolved to go to the land of Egypt to reside there; they will meet their end. They will all fall by the sword or be consumed by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine; and they will become an object of
cursing and
horror, of
vilification and
reproach.
For I have
sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that
Bozrah shall become a
desolation, a
reproach, a waste, and a
curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
Concerning Damascus.
Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil
tidings: they are
fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus: “
Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad
report; they are
agitated like the sea; their
anxiety cannot be calmed.
Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape:
recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
Summon the archers against Babylon, all who string the bow.
Encamp all around her; let no one escape.
Repay her according to her deeds; do to her as she has done. For she has
defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
The king of Babylon hath heard the
report of them, and his hands waxed feeble:
anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in
travail.
The king of Babylon has heard the
report, and his hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.
And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of
Chaldea all their evil that they have done in
Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.
Before your very eyes I will
repay Babylon and all the dwellers of
Chaldea for all the evil they have done in
Zion,” declares the LORD.
We are confounded, because we have heard
reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the
sanctuaries of the LORD’S house.
“We are
ashamed because we have heard
reproach; disgrace has covered our faces, because foreigners have entered the holy places of the LORD’s house.”
Because the
spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
For a destroyer is coming against her— against Babylon. Her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken, for the LORD is a God of
retribution; He will
repay in full.
He giveth his
cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with
reproach.
Let him offer his
cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with
reproach.
Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me;
O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me—
Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Look and see our disgrace!
And I will make thy tongue
cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be
dumb, and shalt not be to them a
reprover: for they are a
rebellious house.
I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and you will be silent and unable to
rebuke them, though they are a
rebellious house.
Then he said unto me, Lo, I have given thee cow’s dung for man’s dung, and thou shalt prepare thy bread
therewith.
“Look,” He
replied, “I will let you use cow dung instead of human
excrement, and you may
bake your bread over that.”
Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that pass by.
I will make you a ruin and a disgrace among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.
So it shall be a
reproach and a
taunt, an instruction and an
astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall
execute judgments in thee in anger and in
fury and in
furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.
So you will be a
reproach and a
taunt, a
warning and a
horror to the nations around you, when I
execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and
raging fury. I, the LORD, have spoken.
Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will
recompense upon thee all thine abominations.
The end is now upon you, and I will
unleash My anger against you. I will judge you according to your ways and
repay you for all your abominations.
Now will I shortly pour out my
fury upon thee, and
accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will
recompense thee for all thine abominations.
Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you and
vent My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and
repay you for all your abominations.
Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of
perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath
forsaken the earth, and the LORD
seeth not.
He
replied, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of
bloodshed, and the city is full of
perversity. For they say, ‘The LORD has
forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.’
And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the
inkhorn by his side,
reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me.
Then the man clothed in linen with the writing
kit at his side
reported back, “I have done as You commanded.”
Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Repent, and turn
yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘
Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your abominations.
Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy
reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which
despise thee round about.
before your wickedness was uncovered? Even so, you are now
scorned by the daughters of
Edom and all those around her, and by the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who
despise you.
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD.
Repent, and turn
yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD.
Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your
downfall.
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn
yourselves, and live ye.
For I take no pleasure in
anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So
repent and live!
And thou, son of man,
prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the
Ammonites, and concerning their
reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is
furbished, to
consume because of the
glittering:
Now
prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the
Ammonites and their contempt: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn for slaughter, polished to
consume, to
flash like
lightning—
Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast
defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a
reproach unto the heathen, and a
mocking to all countries.
you are guilty of the blood you have shed, and you are
defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close and have come to the end of your years. Therefore I have made you a
reproach to the nations and a
mockery to all the lands.
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the
hedge, and stand in the
gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
I searched for a man among them to
repair the wall and stand in the
gap before Me on behalf of the land, so that I should not destroy it. But I found no one.
And they shall
recompense your
lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
They will
repay you for your
indecency, and you will bear the consequences of your sins of
idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’”
I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I
spare, neither will I
repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD.
I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming, and I will act. I will not
refrain or show
pity, nor will I relent. I will judge you according to your ways and deeds,’ declares the Lord GOD.”
Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem,
Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be
replenished, now she is laid waste:
“Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, ‘
Aha! The gate to the nations is broken; it has
swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will be filled,’
The ancients of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy
merchandise.
The ships of
Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou
wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.
And it came to pass in the
twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is
smitten.
In the
twelfth year of our exile, on the fifth day of the tenth month, a
fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and
reported, “The city has been taken!”
Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my
fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen:
Therefore,
prophesy concerning the land of Israel and tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I have spoken in My burning zeal because you have
endured the
reproach of the nations.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I have
sworn with an
uplifted hand that surely the nations around you will
endure reproach of their own.
Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more, saith the Lord GOD.
I will no longer allow the taunts of the nations to be heard against you, and you will no longer
endure the
reproach of the peoples or cause your nation to
stumble, declares the Lord GOD.”
And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
I will also make the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field
plentiful, so that you will no longer bear
reproach among the nations on account of famine.
Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was
desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it.
Then the nations around you that remain will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt what was destroyed, and I have
replanted what was
desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it.
And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.”
And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall
shew thee; for to the intent that I might
shew them unto thee art thou brought
hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.
“Son of man,” he said to me, “look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for that is why you have been brought here. Report to the house of Israel everything you see.”
The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a
dunghill.
The king
replied to the astrologers, “My word is final: If you do not tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces and your houses will be reduced to
rubble.
The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
The king
replied, “I know for sure that you are
stalling for time, because you see that my word is final.
Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to
slay the wise men of Babylon:
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to
execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel
replied with
discretion and
tact.
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
Then
Nebuchadnezzar the king was
astonied, and rose up in
haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.
Suddenly King
Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in
amazement and asked his advisers, “Did we not throw three men, firmly bound, into the fire?” “Certainly, O king,” they
replied.
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was
astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that
hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
For a time, Daniel, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was
perplexed, and his thoughts
alarmed him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation
alarm you.” “My lord,”
replied Belteshazzar, “may the dream apply to those who
hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”
Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign the document so that it cannot be changed—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be
repealed.”
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king
replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
Then Daniel
replied, “O king, may you live
forever!
The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.
And the rough goat is the king of
Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
The
shaggy goat
represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes is the first king.
Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.
The four horns that replaced the broken one represent four kingdoms that will rise from that nation, but will not have the same power.
O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I
beseech thee, let thine anger and thy
fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a
reproach to all that are about us.
O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a
reproach to all around us.
After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.
Then he will turn his face to the coastlands and capture many of them. But a commander will put an end to his reproach and will turn it back upon him.
And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
“Go on your way, Daniel,” he replied, “for the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.
Yet let no man
strive, nor
reprove another: for thy people are as they that
strive with the priest.
But let no man
contend; let no man offer
reproof; for your people are like those who
contend with a priest.
And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will
punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
And it shall be like people, like priest. I will
punish both of them for their ways and
repay them for their deeds.
He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they refused to
repent?
How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as
Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my
repentings are
kindled together.
How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My
compassion is
stirred!
The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will
punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he
recompense him.
The LORD also brings a charge against Judah. He will
punish Jacob according to his ways and
repay him according to his deeds.
Ephraim
provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his
reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
Ephraim has
provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon him and
repay him for his contempt.
I will
ransom them from the power of the grave; I will
redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction:
repentance shall be
hid from mine eyes.
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and
repenteth him of the evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending
disaster.
Who knoweth if he will return and
repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him— grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD,
weep between the
porch and the altar, and let them say,
Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine
heritage to
reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
Let the priests who minister before the LORD
weep between the
portico and the altar, saying, “
Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your
heritage a
reproach, an object of
scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied
therewith: and I will no more make you a
reproach among the heathen:
And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
And I will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the
cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the
palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
They
hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they
abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
There are those who
hate the one who
reproves in the gate and
despise him who speaks with
integrity.
The LORD
repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
And the LORD said unto me,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
“
Amos, what do you see?” asked the LORD. “A
plumb line,” I
replied. “Behold,” said the Lord, “I am setting a
plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them:
Then answered
Amos, and said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig trees.
And he said,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A
basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.
“
Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A
basket of summer fruit,” I
replied. So the LORD said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them.”
In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
“In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
“I am a Hebrew,”
replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
Who can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
When God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—He relented from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and
repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be
angry?
But the LORD
replied, “Have you any right to be
angry?”
And God said to
Jonah, Doest thou well to be
angry for the
gourd? And he said, I do well to be
angry, even unto death.
Then God asked
Jonah, “Have you any right to be
angry about the plant?” “I do,” he
replied. “I am
angry enough to die!”
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the
reproach of my people.
You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of
Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
They shall
lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee.
They will
lick the dust like a
snake, like
reptiles slithering on the ground. They will
crawl from their holes in the presence of the LORD our God; they will
tremble in fear of You.
Draw your water for the siege;
strengthen your fortresses. Work the clay and
tread the mortar;
repair the brick
kiln!
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the ramparts. I will watch to see what He will say to me, and how I should answer when corrected.
O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
O LORD, I have heard the
report of You; I stand in
awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!
I have heard the
reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of
Ammon, whereby they have
reproached my people, and
magnified themselves against their border.
“I have heard the
reproach of Moab and the insults of the
Ammonites, who have
taunted My people and threatened their borders.
This shall they have for their pride, because they have
reproached and
magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
This they shall have in return for their pride, for
taunting and
mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
“I will gather those among you who
grieve over the appointed feasts, so that you will no longer suffer
reproach.
If one bear holy flesh in the
skirt of his garment, and with his
skirt do touch bread, or
pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread,
stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that
item become holy?’” “No,”
replied the priests.
Then answered
Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
Then
Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is
defiled.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will
shew thee what these be.
“What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel who was speaking with me replied, “I will show you what they are.”
Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to
fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to
scatter it.
“What are these coming to do?” I asked. And He
replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but the
craftsmen have come to
terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations that have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to
scatter it.”
Then said I,
Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.
“Where are you going?” I asked. “To measure Jerusalem,” he replied, “and to determine its width and length.”
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a
bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps
thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I
replied, “with a
bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps.
Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered.
And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what these are?” he inquired. “No, my lord,” I replied.
And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
“What do you see?” asked the angel. “I see a flying
scroll,” I
replied, “twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.”
And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an
ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.
“What is it?” I asked. And he
replied, “A measuring
basket is going forth.” Then he continued, “This is their iniquity in all the land.”
