Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the
replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought back a
report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
And the people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
The people
replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
And the people said unto Joshua,
Nay; but we will serve the LORD.
“No!” replied the people. “We will serve the LORD!”
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has
repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went with
Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go with you,”
Deborah replied, “but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went with
Barak to Kedesh,
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord,
wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in
Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in
Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt
smite the Midianites as one man.
“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend
replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
And
Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will
tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
“Very well,”
Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will
tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness!”
And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not
slay you.
“They were my brothers,”
Gideon replied, “the sons of my mother! As surely as the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”
And
Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.
But
Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD shall rule over you.”
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
“We will give them
gladly,” they
replied. So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an
earring from his
plunder onto it.
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount
Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and
cried, and said unto them,
Hearken unto me, ye men of
Shechem, that God may
hearken unto you.
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness,
wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the olive tree
replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
But the fig tree said unto them, Should I
forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the fig tree
replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the
grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the
bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye
anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the
bramble, and
devour the cedars of
Lebanon.
But the thornbush
replied, ‘If you really are
anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and
consume the cedars of
Lebanon.’
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth,
wherewith thou saidst, Who is
Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast
despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
“Where is your
gloating now?” Zebul
replied. “You said, ‘Who is
Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the people you
ridiculed? Go out now and fight them!”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told
Abimelech.
The next day the people of
Shechem went out into the fields, and this was
reported to
Abimelech.
Thus God rendered the wickedness of
Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in
slaying his seventy brethren:
In this way God
repaid the wickedness that
Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.
And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the
Amorites, from the children of
Ammon, and from the Philistines?
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, Did not ye
hate me, and
expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
Jephthah replied to the elders of
Gilead, “Did you not
hate me and
expel me from my father’s house? Why then have you come to me now, when you are in distress?”
Then
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And
Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth;
forasmuch as the LORD hath taken
vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of
Ammon.
“My father,” she
replied, “you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me as you have said, for the LORD has
avenged you of your enemies, the
Ammonites.”
And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great
strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
But
Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the
Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their hands.
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Though thou
detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou
wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For
Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.
And the angel of the LORD
replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For
Manoah did not know that it was the angel of the LORD.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother
replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But
Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy
riddle, that we may hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they
replied. “Let us hear it.”
And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind
Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines
replied, “We have come to arrest
Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”
Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to
Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
In
response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked
Samson, “Do you not
realize that the Philistines rule over us? What have you done to us?” “I have done to them what they did to me,” he
replied.
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He
replied, “If they
tie me up with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And
Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a
Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to
sojourn where I may find a place.
“Where are you from?”
Micah asked him. “I am a
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah,” he
replied, “and I am on my way to settle wherever I can find a place.”
And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth
Micah with me, and hath
hired me, and I am his priest.
“
Micah has done this and that for me,” he
replied, “and he has
hired me to be his priest.”
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside
hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
But his master replied, “We will not turn aside to the city of foreigners, where there are no Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD
replied.
And the children of Israel
repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
And the Israelites
grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites, and said, “
Today a tribe is cut off from Israel.
And the people
repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
The people
grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a void in the tribes of Israel.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
The Benjamites did as
instructed and carried away the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities, and settled in them.
And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my
womb, that they may be your husbands?
But
Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your husbands?
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
But
Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
And she said unto them, Call me not
Naomi, call me
Mara: for the
Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
“Do not call me
Naomi,” she
replied. “Call me
Mara, because the
Almighty has dealt quite bitterly with me.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said unto
Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and
glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said to
Naomi, “Please let me go into the fields and
glean heads of grain after someone in whose sight I may find favor.” “Go
ahead, my daughter,”
Naomi replied.
And behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they
replied.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
And when she was risen up to
glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her
glean even among the
sheaves, and
reproach her not:
When
Ruth got up to
glean, Boaz ordered his young men, “Even if she gathers among the
sheaves, do not
insult her.
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,” she
replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he
replied.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
Then
Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
“Go in peace,”
Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah
replied, “and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
Nay, my sons; for it is no good
report that I hear: ye make the LORD’S people to
transgress.
No, my sons; it is not a good
report I hear
circulating among the LORD’s people.
And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”
And Samuel told him every
whit, and
hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel told him everything and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,”
replied Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a
report, the whole city
cried out.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult? And the man came in
hastily, and told
Eli.
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they
replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They
replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he
rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
Samuel
listened to all the words of the people and
repeated them in the hearing of the LORD.
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
“If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel
replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And Saul answered and said, Am not I a
Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
Saul
replied, “Am I not a
Benjamite from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of Benjamin? So why would you say such a thing to me?”
And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then a man who lived there
replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant,
Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the
asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where did you go?” “To look for the
donkeys,” Saul
replied. “When we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the
asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom,
whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
And Saul
replied, “He
assured us that the
donkeys had been found.” But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the
kingship.
Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath
hid himself among the stuff.
So again they inquired of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet?” And the LORD
replied, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the
baggage.”
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a
reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring
reproach upon all Israel.”
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
“Hold off for seven days,”
replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And they said, Thou hast not
defrauded us, nor
oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
“You have not wronged us or
oppressed us,” they
replied, “nor have you taken anything from the hand of man.”
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,” they
replied.
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at
Michmash;
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul
replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at
Michmash,
Yet they had a
file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to
sharpen the goads.
And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
His
armor-bearer
replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go
ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
Then said
Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been
enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
“My father has brought trouble to the land,”
Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have
brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.
Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have
transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
Then someone
reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are
sinning against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near
hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops
replied. But the priest said, “We must
consult God here.”
Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and
Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one side, and I and my son
Jonathan will stand on the other side.” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops
replied.
It
repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that night.
And Samuel said, What meaneth then this
bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
But Samuel
replied, “Then what is this
bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle that I hear?”
Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
“Stop!”
exclaimed Samuel. “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” “Tell me,” Saul
replied.
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the
Amalekites.
“But I did obey the LORD,” Saul
replied. “I went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back
Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
“I will not return with you,” Samuel replied. “For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and He has rejected you as king over Israel.”
And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor
repent: for he is not a man, that he should
repent.
Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for He is not a man, that He should change His mind.”
Then he said, I have
sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
“I have
sinned,” Saul
replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”
And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel
mourned for Saul: and the LORD
repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel
mourned for Saul, and the LORD
regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
“In peace,” he
replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.
Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated
Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
