road to take the

And as for me, when I came from Padan,
Rachel died by me in the land of
Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto
Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of
Ephrath; the same is
Bethlehem.
Now as for me, when I was returning from Paddan, to my sorrow
Rachel died along the way in the land of
Canaan, some distance from
Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the
road to
Ephrath” (that is,
Bethlehem).

snake by the
road, a
viper in the path that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider tumbles backward.
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest
peradventure the people
repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, though it was shorter. For God said, “If the people face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”
I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall
rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be
desolate.

rob you of your children, destroy your
livestock, and reduce your numbers, until your
roads lie
desolate.

Bashan and his whole army came out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
And God’s anger was
kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an
adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his
ass, and his two servants were with him.

road with a drawn sword in his hand. And
Balaam bowed low and fell facedown.
And
Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have
sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
“I have
sinned,”
Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “for I did not
realize that you were standing in the
road to
confront me. And now, if this is displeasing in your sight, I will go back home.”
Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to
shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

And when we passed by from our brethren the children of
Esau, which dwelt in
Seir, through the way of the plain from
Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of
Esau, who live in
Seir. We turned away from the Arabah
road, which comes up from
Elath and Ezion-
geber, and traveled along the
road of the Wilderness of Moab.
Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

Bashan: and
Og the king of

Og king of
Bashan and his whole army came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.
And thou shalt teach them
diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
And you shall teach them
diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the
road, when you lie down and when you get up.
And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the
Canaanites, which dwell in the
champaign over against
Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
Are not these mountains across the Jordan, west of the
road toward the
sunset, in the land of the
Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite
Gilgal near the Oak of Moreh?
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to
inherit, into three parts, that every
slayer may
flee thither.
You are to build
roads for
yourselves and divide into three regions the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that any
manslayer can
flee to these cities.
Thou shalt not see thy brother’s
ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide
thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.
If you see your brother’s
donkey or ox fallen on the
road, you must not
ignore it; you must help him lift it up.
If a bird’s nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the
dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the
dam with the young:
If you come across a bird’s nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, you must not take the mother along with the young.
Cursed be he that maketh the blind to
wander out of the way. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘

wander in the
road.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
So the king’s men set out in pursuit of the
spies along the
road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone out, the gate was shut.
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
So the
spies went out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the
road.
And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went with
Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go with you,”
Deborah replied, “but the
road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went with
Barak to Kedesh,
Speak, ye that
ride on white
asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they

And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the
carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a
swarm of bees and honey in the
carcase of the lion.
When
Samson returned later to take her, he left the
road to see the lion’s
carcass, and in it was a
swarm of bees, along with their honey.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the
roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And the children of Benjamin said, They are
smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us
flee, and draw them from the city unto the
highways.
“We are defeating them as before,” said the Benjamites. But the Israelites said, “Let us retreat and draw them away from the city
onto the
roads.”
And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of
Rimmon: and they
gleaned of them in the
highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and
slew two thousand men of them.
Then the Benjamites turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, and Israel cut down 5,000 men on the
roads. And they overtook them at Gidom and struck down 2,000 more.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the
road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the
road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the
road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the
road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of
Zeboim toward the wilderness.
another toward Beth-horon, and the third down the border
road overlooking the Valley of
Zeboim facing the wilderness.
And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and
shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of
Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto
Gath, and unto
Ekron.
Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward with a
shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of
Gath and to the gates of
Ekron. And the bodies of the Philistines were
strewn along the Shaaraim
road to
Gath and
Ekron.
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the
road, where there was a cave, and he went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon, but David was living in the wilderness. When he realized that Saul had followed him there,
And Achish said,
Whither have ye made a
road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the
Kenites.
who would ask him, “What have you
raided today?” And David would reply, “The Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the
Kenites.”
But
Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
Meanwhile,
Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming down the
road west of him, along the side of the hill. And the
watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hill.”
And
Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then
Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
He would get up early and stand beside the
road leading to the city gate. Whenever
anyone had a
grievance to bring before the king for a decision,
Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side over against him, and
cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.
So David and his men proceeded along the
road as Shimei went along the ridge of the hill opposite him. As Shimei went, he
yelled curses, threw stones, and
flung dust at David.
And
Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the
highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed
Amasa out of the
highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.
But
Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the
road, and when the man saw that all the troops were
stopping there, he
dragged the body off the
road into a field and threw a garment over it.
When he was removed out of the
highway, all the people went on after
Joab, to pursue after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
As soon as
Amasa’s body was removed from the
road, all the men went on with
Joab to pursue
Sheba son of Bichri.
And it came to pass at that time when
Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet
Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had
clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
During that time, the prophet
Ahijah the Shilonite met
Jeroboam on the
road as he was going out of Jerusalem. Now
Ahijah had
wrapped himself in a new
cloak, and the two of them were alone in the open field.
And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and
slew him: and his
carcase was cast in the way, and the
ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the
carcase.
As he went on his way, a lion met him on the
road and killed him, and his body was left lying in the
road, with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it.
And, behold, men passed by, and saw the
carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the
carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
And there were men passing by who saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported this in the city where the old prophet lived.
and he went and found the body lying in the
road, with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body or
mauled the
donkey.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and
disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
and the prophet went and waited on the
road for the king,
disguising himself with a
bandage over his eyes.
And he went up from thence unto
Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and
mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou
bald head; go up, thou
bald head.
But when
Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And
Jehu followed after him, and said,
Smite him also in the
chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to
Megiddo, and died there.
When King
Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the
road toward Beth-haggan. And
Jehu pursued him,
shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot
Ahaziah in his
chariot on the
Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to
Megiddo and died there.
And the servants of
Joash rose up and formed a
conspiracy and killed him at Beth-
millo, on the
road down to Silla.
And the king of Assyria sent
Tartan and Rabsaris and
Rab-shakeh from
Lachish to king
Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the
conduit of the upper
pool, which is in the
highway of the fuller’s field.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the
Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the
Rabshakeh, along with a great army, from
Lachish to King
Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the
aqueduct of the upper
pool, on the
road to the
Launderer’s Field.
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the
road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who
forsake Him.”
Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their
tokens,
Have you never asked those who travel the roads? Do you not accept their reports?
They turn the
needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.
They
push the
needy off the
road and force all the poor of the land into hiding.
He shall drink of the
brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
He will drink from the
brook by the
road; therefore He will lift up His head.
My son, walk not thou in the way with them;
refrain thy foot from their path:
my son, do not walk the road with them or set foot upon their path.
Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
crossing the street near her corner,
strolling down the
road to her house,
Her house is the way to
hell, going down to the chambers of death.
Her house is the
road to
Sheol, descending to the chambers of death.
She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
On the heights overlooking the road, at the crossroads she takes her stand.
The
slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
The slacker says, “A lion is in the road! A fierce lion roams the public square!”
Yea also, when he that is a
fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a
fool.
Even as the
fool walks along the
road, his sense is lacking, and he shows
everyone that he is a
fool.
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the
almond tree shall
flourish, and the
grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
when men fear the heights and dangers of the
road, when the
almond tree blossoms, the
grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper
berry shrivels— for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.
Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet
Ahaz, thou, and
Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the
conduit of the upper
pool in the
highway of the fuller’s field;
Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son
Shear-jashub to meet
Ahaz at the end of the
aqueduct that feeds the upper
pool, on the
road to the
Launderer’s Field,
My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall
flee unto Zoar, an
heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with
weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.
My heart
cries out over Moab; her fugitives
flee as far as Zoar, as far as Eglath-shelishiyah. With
weeping they
ascend the slope of Luhith; they
lament their destruction on the
road to Horonaim.
Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
Get out of the way; turn off the road. Rid us of the Holy One of Israel!”
I will turn all My mountains into
roads, and My
highways will be raised up.
Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the
ransomed to pass over?
Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea for the redeemed to cross over?
Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.
Do not go out to the fields; do not walk the road. For the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side.
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn incense to worthless idols that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient
roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the
highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
“Set up the
roadmarks, establish the signposts. Keep the
highway in mind, the
road you have traveled. Return, O Virgin Israel, return to these cities of yours.
O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and
espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?
Stand by the
road and watch, O dweller of Aroer! Ask the man
fleeing or the woman escaping, ‘What has happened?’
The ways of
Zion do
mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are
desolate: her priests
sigh, her virgins are
afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
The
roads to
Zion mourn, because no one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests
groan, her maidens
grieve, and she herself is bitter with
anguish.
Also, thou son of man,
appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both
twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.
“Now you, son of man, mark out two
roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a
signpost where the
road branches off to each city.
Mark out one
road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the
Ammonites, and another against Judah into fortified Jerusalem.
For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use
divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.
For the king of Babylon stands at the
fork in the
road, at the junction of the two
roads, to seek an
omen: He shakes the arrows, he consults the idols, he examines the liver.
Now these are the names of the tribes. From the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to
Hamath, Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of
Hamath; for these are his sides east and west; a portion for
Dan.
“Now these are the names of the tribes: At the northern frontier,
Dan will have one portion bordering the
road of Hethlon to Lebo-
hamath and running on to Hazar-enan on the border of Damascus with
Hamath to the north, and extending from the east side to the west side.
He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the
munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong,
fortify thy power
mightily.
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the
Samaritans enter ye not:
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go
onto the
road of the Gentiles or enter any town of the
Samaritans.
Nor
scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither
shoes, nor yet
staves: for the
workman is worthy of his meat.
Take no
bag for the
road, or second
tunic, or
sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.
And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by,
cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
And there were two blind men sitting beside the
road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they
cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing
thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee
henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree
withered away.
Seeing a fig tree by the
road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. “May you never bear fruit again!” He said. And immediately the tree
withered.
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were
amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,
As they were going up the
road to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking
ahead of them. The disciples were
amazed, but those who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him:
And they came to
Jericho: and as he went out of
Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the
highway side
begging.
Next, they came to
Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples were leaving
Jericho with a large crowd, a blind
beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the
road.
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has
healed you.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the
road.
And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
