My tabernacle is
spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to
set up my curtains.
My tent is destroyed, and all its ropes are
snapped. My sons have departed from me and are no more. I have no one left to pitch my tent or
set up my curtains.
For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye
set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto
Baal.
Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah; the altars of shame you have
set up—the altars to burn incense to
Baal—are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great
tumult he hath
kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit. But with a mighty
roar He will
set it on fire, and its branches will be consumed.
But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
But You know me, O LORD; You see me and test my heart toward You.
Drag away the wicked like sheep to the slaughter and
set them apart for the day of
carnage.
What
wilt thou say when he shall
punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in
travail?
What will you say when He
sets over you close allies whom you
yourself trained? Will not pangs of
anguish grip you, as they do a woman in labor?
She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been
ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD.
The mother of seven will grow
faint; she will
breathe her last breath. Her sun will
set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and
humiliated. And the rest I will put to the sword in the presence of their enemies,” declares the LORD.
And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
Furthermore, you are to tell this people that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I
set before you the way of life and the way of death.
For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
For I have
set My face against this city to bring
disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’
But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy
covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
“But your eyes and heart are
set on nothing except your own
dishonest gain, on
shedding innocent blood, on practicing
extortion and oppression.”
And I will
set up
shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.
I will raise up
shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or dismayed, nor will any go missing, declares the LORD.
The LORD shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were
set before the temple of the LORD, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away
captive Jeconiah the son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
After
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away Jeconiah son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, as well as the officials of Judah and the
craftsmen and metalsmiths from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD.
For I will
set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not
pluck them up.
I will keep My eyes on them for good and will return them to this land. I will build them up and not
tear them down; I will plant them and not
uproot them.
And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; If ye will not
hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have
set before you,
And you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘If you do not
listen to Me and walk in My law, which I have
set before you,
Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;
“Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat their produce.
For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
For he has sent to us in Babylon, claiming: Since the exile will be
lengthy, build houses and
settle down; plant gardens and eat their produce.’”
Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps:
set thine heart toward the
highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
“
Set up the roadmarks, establish the signposts. Keep the
highway in mind, the road you have traveled. Return, O Virgin Israel, return to these cities of yours.
In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a
sour grape, and the children’s teeth are
set on edge.
“In those days, it will no longer be said: ‘The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are
set on edge.’
But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the
sour grape, his teeth shall be
set on edge.
Instead, each will die for his own iniquity. If
anyone eats the
sour grapes, his own teeth will be
set on edge.
Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof
roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day, who
sets in order the moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves
roar—the LORD of Hosts is His name:
Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day;
You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and You do so to this very day, both in Israel and among all mankind. And You have made a name for
Yourself, as is the case to this day.
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and
set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto
Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to
provoke me to anger.
And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come in,
set it on fire, and burn it, along with the houses of those who
provoked Me to anger by burning incense to
Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
But they
set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to
defile it.
They have placed their abominations in the house that bears My Name, and so have
defiled it.
But ye turned and
polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his
handmaid, whom ye had
set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
But now you have changed your minds and
profaned My name. Each of you has taken back the menservants and maidservants whom you had
set at liberty to go wherever they wanted, and you have again forced them to be your slaves.
And I
set before the sons of the house of the
Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.
Then I
set pitchers full of wine and some cups before the men of the house of the
Rechabites, and I said to them, “Drink some wine.”
And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have
set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the
mire, and they are turned away back.
All the women who remain in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon, and those women will say: ‘They misled you and overcame you— those trusted friends of yours. Your feet
sank into the
mire, and they deserted you.’
And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and
brake down the walls of Jerusalem.
The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king and to the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.
Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the
Ammonites, and in
Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a
remnant of Judah, and that he had
set over them Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan;
When all the Jews in Moab,
Ammon,
Edom, and all the other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a
remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over them,
Then
Ishmael carried away
captive all the residue of the people that were in
Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in
Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away
captive, and departed to go over to the
Ammonites.
And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye
remnant of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly
set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to
sojourn there;
then hear the word of the LORD, O
remnant of Judah! This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and reside there,
So shall it be with all the men that
set their faces to go into Egypt to
sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.
So all who
resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will
survive or escape the
disaster I will bring upon them.’
But
Baruch the son of Neriah
setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away
captives into Babylon.
Rather,
Baruch son of Neriah is
inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”
And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will
set his throne upon these stones that I have
hid; and he shall spread his royal
pavilion over them.
Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will send for My servant
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will
set his throne over these stones that I have
embedded, and he will spread his royal
pavilion over them.
They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed My instruction or the statutes that I set before you and your fathers.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will
set My face to bring
disaster and to cut off all Judah.
And I will take the
remnant of Judah, that have
set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an
execration, and an
astonishment, and a
curse, and a reproach.
And I will take away the
remnant of Judah who have resolved to go to the land of Egypt to reside there; they will meet their end. They will all fall by the sword or be consumed by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine; and they will become an object of
cursing and
horror, of
vilification and reproach.
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath
settled on his
lees, and hath not been
emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his
scent is not changed.
Moab has been at ease from youth,
settled like wine on its
dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his
flavor has remained the same, and his
aroma is unchanged.
O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the
dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.
Abandon the towns and
settle among the rocks, O dwellers of Moab! Be like a
dove that nests at the mouth of a cave.
Concerning the
Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then
doth their king
inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?
Concerning the
Ammonites, this is what the LORD says: “Has Israel no sons? Is he without heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of
Gad? Why have his people
settled in their cities?
And I will
kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall
consume the palaces of Ben-
hadad.
“I will
set fire to the walls of Damascus; it will
consume the fortresses of Ben-
hadad.”
And I will
set my throne in
Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.
I will
set My throne in
Elam, and destroy its king and officials,” declares the LORD.
Declare ye among the nations, and
publish, and
set up a standard;
publish, and
conceal not: say, Babylon is taken,
Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
“
Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a
banner and
proclaim it; hold nothing back when you say, ‘Babylon is captured;
Bel is put to shame; Marduk is
shattered, her images are disgraced, her idols are broken in pieces.’
For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall
set themselves in
array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty
expert man; none shall return in vain.
For behold, I
stir up and bring against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the land of the north. They will line up against her; from the north she will be captured. Their arrows will be like skilled warriors who do not return empty-handed.
Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong,
set up the
watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
Raise a
banner against the walls of Babylon; post the guard; station the
watchmen; prepare the
ambush. For the LORD has both devised and accomplished what He spoke against the people of Babylon.
Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the
trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of
Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz;
appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.
“Raise a
banner in the land! Blow the ram’s horn among the nations! Prepare the nations against her.
Summon the kingdoms against her—
Ararat, Minni, and
Ashkenaz.
Appoint a captain against her; bring up horses like
swarming locusts.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been
set ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are
affrighted.
The fords have been seized, the marshes
set on fire, and the soldiers are
terrified.”
Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath
devoured me, he hath
crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath
swallowed me up like a
dragon, he hath filled his
belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.
And spake kindly unto him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon,
And he spoke kindly to
Jehoiachin and
set his throne above the thrones of the other kings who were with him in Babylon.
The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not
pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to
rejoice over thee, he hath
set up the horn of thine
adversaries.
The LORD has done what He
planned; He has accomplished His decree, which He ordained in days of old; He has overthrown you without
pity. He has let the enemy
gloat over you and
exalted the horn of your foes.
He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.
He hath bent his bow, and
set me as a mark for the
arrow.
He bent His bow and
set me as the
target for His
arrow.
And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
And as He spoke to me, the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me.
Then the spirit entered into me, and
set me upon my feet, and spake with me, and said unto me, Go, shut
thyself within thine house.
Then the Spirit entered me and
set me on my feet. He spoke with me and said, “Go, shut
yourself inside your house.
And lay siege against it, and build a fort against it, and cast a mount against it;
set the camp also against it, and
set battering rams against it round about.
Then lay siege against it: Construct a siege wall, build a
ramp to it,
set up camps against it, and place
battering rams around it on all sides.
Moreover take thou unto thee an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city: and set thy face against it, and it shall be besieged, and thou shalt lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.
Then take an iron plate and
set it up as an iron wall between
yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and
besiege it. This will be a sign to the house of Israel.
Therefore thou shalt
set thy face toward the siege of Jerusalem, and thine arm shall be uncovered, and thou shalt
prophesy against it.
You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and
prophesy against it.
And thy meat which thou shalt eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day: from time to time shalt thou eat it.
You are to
weigh out twenty shekels of food to eat each day, and you are to eat it at
set times.
Thou shalt drink also water by measure, the sixth part of an
hin: from time to time shalt thou drink.
You are also to measure out a sixth of a
hin of water to drink, and you are to drink it at
set times.
And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a
barber’s
razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy
beard: then take thee balances to
weigh, and divide the hair.
“As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword, use it as a
barber’s
razor, and
shave your head and
beard. Then take a
set of scales and divide the hair.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
Son of man,
set thy face toward the mountains of Israel, and
prophesy against them,
“Son of man,
set your face against the mountains of Israel and
prophesy against them.
As for the beauty of his ornament, he
set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their
detestable things therein: therefore have I
set it far from them.
His beautiful ornaments they transformed into pride and used them to fashion their
vile images and
detestable idols. Therefore I will make these into something unclean for them.
And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and
set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that
sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.
“Go throughout the city of Jerusalem,” said the LORD, “and put a mark on the foreheads of the men
sighing and
groaning over all the abominations committed there.”
Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a
rebellious house.
Therefore, son of man,
pack your bags for exile. In broad
daylight,
set out from your place and go to another as they watch. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a
rebellious house.
In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it forth in the
twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground: for I have
set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
And as they watch, lift your bags to your shoulder and take them out at
dusk; cover your face so that you cannot see the land. For I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”
Likewise, thou son of man,
set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which
prophesy out of their own heart; and
prophesy thou against them,
Now, O son of man,
set your face against the daughters of your people who
prophesy out of their own imagination.
Prophesy against them
Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
“Son of man, these men have
set up idols in their hearts and put wicked
stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I
consult with them in any way?
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
Therefore speak to them and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When any
Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him according to his great
idolatry,
For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and
setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to
enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
For when any
Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me,
sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself.
And I will
set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a
proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
I will
set My face against that man and make him a sign and a
proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
And I will
set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall
devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I
set my face against them.
And I will
set My face against them. Though they may have escaped the fire, yet another fire will
consume them. And when I
set My face against them, you will know that I am the LORD.
And tookest thy
broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast
set mine oil and mine incense before them.
You took your
embroidered garments to cover them, and you
set My oil and incense before them.
My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey,
wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even
set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.
And you
set before them as a pleasing
aroma the food I had given you—the fine flour, oil, and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares the Lord GOD.
He
cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of
traffick; he
set it in a city of merchants.
He
plucked off its
topmost shoot, carried it to the land of merchants, and planted it in a city of traders.
He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and
set it as a
willow tree.
He took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil; he placed it by abundant waters and
set it out like a
willow.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest branch of the high
cedar, and will
set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take a shoot from the lofty top of the
cedar, and I will
set it out. I will
pluck a tender
sprig from its
topmost shoots, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.
What mean ye, that ye use this
proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are
set on edge?
“What do you people mean by
quoting this
proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are
set on edge’?
Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit.
Then the nations
set out against him from the provinces on every side. They spread their net over him; he was
trapped in their pit.
Son of man,
set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and
prophesy against the forest of the south field;
“Son of man,
set your face toward the south,
preach against it, and
prophesy against the forest of the Negev.
Son of man,
set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and
prophesy against the land of Israel,
I have
set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may
faint, and their ruins be multiplied:
ah! it is made bright, it is
wrapped up for the slaughter.
So that their hearts may
melt and many may
stumble, I have appointed at all their gates a sword for slaughter.
Yes, it is ready to
flash like
lightning; it is drawn for slaughter.
Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left,
whithersoever thy face is
set.
Slash to the right;
set your
blade to the left— wherever your
blade is directed.
At his right hand was the
divination for Jerusalem, to
appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with
shouting, to
appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort.
In his right hand appears the
portent for Jerusalem, where he is to
set up
battering rams, to call for the slaughter, to lift a battle cry, to direct the
battering rams against the gates, to build a
ramp, and to erect a siege wall.
In thee have they
set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they
vexed the fatherless and the widow.
Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited, the fatherless and the widow are
oppressed.
In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was
set apart for
pollution.
In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers; in you they
violate women during their
menstrual impurity.
And they shall come against thee with
chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall
set against thee
buckler and shield and
helmet round about: and I will
set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.
They will come against you with a host of peoples, with weapons,
chariots, and wagons. They will
array themselves against you on every side with
buckler and shield and
helmet. I will
delegate judgment to them, and they will
punish you according to their own standards.
And I will
set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal
furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy
remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be
devoured by the fire.
And I will
set My
jealous rage against you, and they will deal with you in
fury. They will cut off your noses and ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your
remnant will be consumed by fire.
And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it,
whereupon thou hast
set mine incense and mine oil.
You sat on a
couch of
luxury with a table spread before it, on which you had
set My incense and My oil,
Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.
“Son of man, write down
today’s date, for on this very day the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem.
And utter a parable unto the
rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Set on a pot,
set it on, and also pour water into it:
Now speak a parable to this
rebellious house and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Put the pot on the fire; put it on and pour in the water.
For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;
For the blood she shed is still within her; she poured it out on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.
That it might cause
fury to come up to take
vengeance; I have
set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.
In order to
stir up wrath and take
vengeance, I have placed her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.’
Then
set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the
filthiness of it may be
molten in it, that the
scum of it may be consumed.
Set the empty pot on its coals until it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will
melt within; its
rust will be consumed.
Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that
whereupon they
set their minds, their sons and their daughters,
And you, son of man, know that on the day I take away their
stronghold, their pride and joy—the desire of their eyes which
uplifted their souls—and their sons and daughters as well,
Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.
therefore I will indeed give you as a possession to the people of the East. They will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk.
He shall
slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the
buckler against thee.
He will slaughter the villages of your mainland with the sword; he will
set up siege works against you, build a
ramp to your walls, and raise his shields against you.
And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.
He will direct the blows of his
battering rams against your walls and
tear down your towers with his axes.
When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall
set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places
desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall
set glory in the land of the living;
then I will bring you down with those who descend to the Pit, to the people of antiquity. I will make you dwell in the earth below like the ancient ruins, with those who descend to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited or
set in
splendor in the land of the living.
They of Persia and of Lud and of
Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they
hanged the shield and
helmet in thee; they
set forth thy
comeliness.
Men of Persia,
Lydia, and Put served as warriors in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls; they gave you
splendor.
