Which
devour widows’ houses, and for a
shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater
damnation.
For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but
she of her
penury hath cast in all the living that
she had.
For they all contributed out of their
surplus, but
she out of her poverty has put in all
she had to live on.”
And he shall
shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.”
Likewise also the cup after
supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is
shed for you.
In the same way, after
supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
But a certain
maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
A servant
girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,”
she said.
And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables.
And when he had made a
scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the
sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
So He made a
whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both
sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”
Now there is at Jerusalem by the
sheep market a
pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue
Bethesda, having five porches.
Now there is in Jerusalem near the
Sheep Gate a
pool with five covered colonnades, which in Hebrew is called
Bethesda.
For the Father loveth the Son, and
sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will
shew him greater works than these, that ye may
marvel.
The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your
amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
They said therefore unto him, What sign
shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what
dost thou work?
So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things,
shew thyself to the world.
For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show
Yourself to the world.”
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
“No one, Lord,”
she answered. “Then neither do I
condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
But he that entereth in by the door is the
shepherd of the
sheep.
But the one who enters by the gate is the
shepherd of the
sheep.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the
sheep listen for his voice. He calls his own
sheep by name and leads them out.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
When he has brought out all his own, he goes on
ahead of them, and his
sheep follow him because they know his voice.
Then said Jesus unto them again,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the
sheep.
So He said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
All that ever came before me are
thieves and robbers: but the
sheep did not hear them.
All who came before Me were
thieves and robbers, but the
sheep did not
listen to them.
But he that is an
hireling, and not the
shepherd, whose own the
sheep are not,
seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the
sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the
sheep.
The
hired hand is not the
shepherd, and the
sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the
sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.
The man runs away because he is a
hired servant and is unconcerned for the
sheep.
I am the good
shepherd, and know my
sheep, and am known of mine.
I am the good
shepherd. I know My
sheep and My
sheep know Me,
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.
And other
sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one
shepherd.
I have other
sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will
listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one
shepherd.
But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
My
sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
But Jesus
responded, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me?”
Then
Martha, as soon as
she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
So when
Martha heard that Jesus was coming,
she went out to meet Him; but Mary stayed at home.
She saith unto him,
Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
“
Yes, Lord,”
she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
After
Martha had said this,
she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that
she rose up
hastily and went out, followed her, saying,
She goeth unto the grave to
weep there.
When the Jews who were in the house
consoling Mary saw how quickly
she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing
she was going to the tomb to
mourn there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it, that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given orders that
anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my
burying hath
she kept this.
“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “
She has kept this
perfume in preparation for the day of My burial.
Philip saith unto him, Lord,
shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then,
Shew us the Father?
Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me?
Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but
whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will
shew you things to come.
However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.
He shall
glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall
shew it unto you.
He will
glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall
shew it unto you.
Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
A woman when
she is in
travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as
she is delivered of the child,
she remembereth no more the
anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman has pain in
childbirth because her time has come; but when
she brings forth her child,
she forgets her
anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
These things have I spoken unto you in
proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in
proverbs, but I shall
shew you plainly of the Father.
I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the
sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
“Put your sword back in its
sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
Then
she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the
sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she said, “and we do not know where they have put Him!”
But Mary stood outside the tomb
weeping. And as
she wept,
she bent down to look into the tomb,
And
seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had
lain.
and
she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had
lain, one at the head and the other at the feet.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
“Woman, why are you
weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,”
she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.”
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
“Woman, why are you
weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener,
she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.”
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
Mary Magdalene went and
announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And
she told them what He had said to her.
And when he had so said, he
shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples
glad, when they saw the Lord.
After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples
rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
After these things Jesus
shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of
Tiberias; and on this wise
shewed he himself.
Later, by the Sea of
Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in this way:
This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him,
Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my
sheep.
Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “
Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “
Shepherd My
sheep.”
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was
grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my
sheep.
Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply
hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My
sheep.
To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many
convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men,
shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
And they prayed, “Lord, You know
everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen
And I will
shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
Therefore being by the right hand of God
exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath
shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
But in this way God has fulfilled what He
foretold through all the prophets, saying that His Christ would suffer.
For the man was above forty years old, on whom this
miracle of
healing was
shewed.
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And
she said,
Yea, for so much.
“Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “
Yes,”
she answered, “that is the price.”
Then fell
she down
straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
At that instant she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall
shew thee.
and told him, ‘Leave your country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you.’
And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the
sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
Their bones were carried back to
Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at
Shechem for a price he paid in silver.
And the next day he
shewed himself unto them as they
strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to
reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’
He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.
Which of the prophets have not your fathers
persecuted? and they have slain them which
shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to
persecute? They even killed those who
foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—
The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a
sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb
dumb before his
shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
The
eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a
sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the
shearer is silent, so He did not open His mouth.
For I will
shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.
I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.”
Now there was at
Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which
she did.
In
Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which is translated as Dorcas), who was always occupied with works of kindness and charity.
And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
At that time, however, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upper room.
Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him
weeping, and
shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while
she was with them.
So Peter got up and went with them. On his arrival, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood around him,
weeping and showing him the tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while
she was still with them.
But Peter put them all forth, and
kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And
she opened her eyes: and when
she saw Peter,
she sat up.
Then Peter sent them all out of the room. He
knelt down and prayed, and turning toward her body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!”
She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter,
she sat up.
And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great
sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
He saw heaven open and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
This was done
thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
This happened three times, and all at once the sheet was taken back up into heaven.
And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a
Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath
shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a
Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen—
I was in the city of
Joppa praying: and in a
trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great
sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:
“I was in the city of
Joppa praying, and in a
trance I saw a vision of something like a large
sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came right down to me.
And he
shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to
Joppa, and call for Simon, whose
surname is Peter;
He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to
Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
And when
she knew Peter’s voice,
she opened not the gate for
gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
When
she recognized Peter’s voice,
she was so overjoyed that
she forgot to open the gate, but ran inside and
announced, “Peter is standing at the gate!”
And they said unto her, Thou art
mad. But
she constantly
affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
“You are out of your mind,” they told her. But when
she kept
insisting it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
But he,
beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go
shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
Peter motioned with his hand for silence, and he described how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Send word to James and to the brothers,” he said, and he left for another place.
And a certain woman named
Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of
Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that
she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
Among those
listening was a woman named
Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of
Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to
respond to Paul’s message.
And when
she was
baptized, and her household,
she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and
abide there. And
she constrained us.
And when
she and her household had been
baptized,
she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And
she persuaded us.
The same followed Paul and us, and
cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which
shew unto us the way of salvation.
This
girl followed Paul and the rest of us,
shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are
proclaiming to you the way of salvation!”
And this did
she many days. But Paul, being
grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so
aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” And the spirit left her at that very moment.
For he powerfully
refuted the Jews in public
debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
And many that believed came, and
confessed, and
shewed their deeds.
Many who had believed now came forward,
confessing and disclosing their deeds.
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at
nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess
Diana should be
despised, and her
magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
There is danger not only that our business will fall into
disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty
deposed—
she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.”
And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
I did not
shrink back from declaring anything that was helpful to you as I taught you publicly and from house to house,
Take
heed therefore unto
yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Keep watch over
yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be
shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
And when the blood of thy
martyr Stephen was
shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the
raiment of them that
slew him.
And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was
shed, I stood there giving my
approval and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’
So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
So the commander dismissed the young man and
instructed him, “Do not tell
anyone that you have reported this to me.”
But after two years Porcius
Festus came into
Felix’ room: and
Felix, willing to
shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
After two years had passed,
Felix was succeeded by Porcius
Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor,
Felix left Paul in prison.
