strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to
hew wrought stones to build the house of God.
So David gave orders to gather the foreigners in the land of Israel, from whom he appointed stonecutters to prepare finished stones for building the house of God.
For we are
strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none
abiding.
For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
And Solomon numbered all the
strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering
wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.

Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the
stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as
doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name.
And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the
strangers with them out of Ephraim and
Manasseh, and out of
Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
And he assembled all Judah and Benjamin, along with those from the tribes of Ephraim,
Manasseh, and
Simeon who had settled among them, for great numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the
strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole assembly of Judah
rejoiced along with the priests and Levites and the whole assembly that had come from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and those who lived in Judah.
And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all
strangers, and stood and
confessed their sins, and the
iniquities of their fathers.
Those of
Israelite descent separated themselves from all the foreigners, and they stood and
confessed their sins and the
iniquities of their fathers.
Thus
cleansed I them from all
strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;
Thus I
purified the priests and Levites from everything foreign, and I assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them.

stranger: I am an
alien in their sight.
My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger; I am a foreigner in their sight.
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my
reins be consumed within me.
I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!
I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
I was a father to the
needy, and I took up the case of the
stranger.
The
stranger did not
lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
but no
stranger had to
lodge on the street, for my door has been open to the traveler—
As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.
When they hear me, they obey me; foreigners cower before me.
The
strangers shall
fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.
Foreigners lose heart and come
trembling from their strongholds.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a
stranger with thee, and a
sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be
deaf to my
weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a
stranger like all my fathers.
For
strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them.
Selah.
For
strangers rise up against me, and
ruthless men seek my life— men with no regard for God.
Selah I am become a
stranger unto my brethren, and an
alien unto my mother’s children.
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons,
They
slay the widow and the
stranger, and murder the fatherless.
They kill the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.
When they were but a few men in number;
yea, very few, and
strangers in it.
When they were few in number, few indeed, and strangers in the land,
Let the
extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the
strangers spoil his labour.
May the
creditor seize all he owns, and
strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.
I am a stranger on the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me.
The LORD preserveth the
strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth
upside down.
The LORD protects foreigners; He sustains the fatherless and the widow, but the ways of the wicked He frustrates.
To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
It will
rescue you from the forbidden woman, from the
stranger with
seductive words
Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
lest
strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors
enrich the house of a foreigner.
Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.
And why
wilt thou, my son, be
ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the
bosom of a
stranger?
My son, if thou be
surety for thy friend, if thou hast
stricken thy hand with a
stranger,
My son, if you have put up security for your
neighbor, if you have struck hands in
pledge with a
stranger,
That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
He who puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but the one who hates indebtedness is secure.
The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a
stranger doth not
intermeddle with his joy.
The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger shares in its joy.
Take his garment that is
surety for a
stranger: and take a
pledge of him for a strange woman.
Take the garment of the one who posts security for a
stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth— a stranger, and not your own lips.
Take his garment that is
surety for a
stranger, and take a
pledge of him for a strange woman.
Take the garment of him who posts security for a
stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires; but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a
stranger will enjoy them. This is
futile and a
grievous affliction.
Your country is
desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land,
strangers devour it in your presence, and it is
desolate, as overthrown by
strangers.
Therefore thou hast
forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be
replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of
strangers.
For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with influences from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines; they strike hands with the children of foreigners.
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in their own pastures, and
strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.
For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the
strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall
cleave to the house of Jacob.
For the LORD will have
compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and settle them in their own land. The foreigner will join them and unite with the house of Jacob.
For thou hast made of a city an
heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of
strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.
Indeed, You have made the city a
heap of
rubble, the fortified town a ruin. The fortress of
strangers is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.
Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.
like heat in a dry land. You
subdue the
uproar of foreigners. As the shade of a cloud cools the heat, so the song of the
ruthless is silenced.
Moreover the multitude of thy
strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as
chaff that passeth away:
yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
But your many foes will be like fine dust, the multitude of the
ruthless like blowing
chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant,
Neither let the son of the
stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from His people.” And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”
Also the sons of the
stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to Him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be His servants— all who keep the Sabbath without
profaning it and who hold fast to My covenant—
And the sons of
strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I
smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy.
And
strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the
alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
Strangers will stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the
stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you have
toiled.
Withhold thy foot from being
unshod, and thy throat from
thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved
strangers, and after them will I go.
You should have kept your feet from going bare and your throat from being
thirsty. But you said, ‘It is hopeless! For I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.’
Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast
transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the
strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.
Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled against the LORD your God. You have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every green tree and have not obeyed My voice,’” declares the LORD.
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have
forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve
strangers in a land that is not yours.
And when the people ask, ‘For what
offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have
forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve foreigners in a land that is not your own.’”
If ye
oppress not the
stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your
hurt:
if you no longer
oppress the foreigner and the fatherless and the widow, and if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods to your own
harm,
O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a
stranger in the land, and as a
wayfaring man that turneth aside to
tarry for a night?
O Hope of Israel, its
Savior in times of distress, why are You like a
stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays but a night?
Thus saith the LORD;
Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the
stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
This is what the LORD says:
Administer justice and righteousness.
Rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of his
oppressor. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow. Do not shed innocent blood in this place.
For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will
burst thy bonds, and
strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will break the yoke off their necks and
tear off their bonds, and no longer will
strangers enslave them.
Neither shall ye build house, nor
sow seed, nor plant
vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be
strangers.
Nor are you ever to build a house or
sow seed or plant a
vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you
wander.’
And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall
fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
I will send
strangers to Babylon to
winnow her and empty her land; for they will come against her from every side in her day of
disaster.
We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for
strangers are come into the
sanctuaries of the LORD’S house.
“We are
ashamed because we have heard reproach; disgrace has covered our faces, because foreigners have entered the holy places of the LORD’s house.”
Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.
And I will give it into the hands of the
strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a
spoil; and they shall
pollute it.
And I will hand these things over as
plunder to foreigners and
loot to the wicked of the earth, who will
defile them.
And I will bring you out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of
strangers, and will
execute judgments among you.
I will bring you out of the city and deliver you into the hands of foreigners, and I will
execute judgments against you.
For every one of the house of Israel, or of the
stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to
enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
For when any
Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself.
But as a wife that committeth
adultery, which taketh
strangers instead of her husband!
You
adulterous wife! You receive
strangers instead of your own husband!
In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the
stranger: in thee have they
vexed the fatherless and the widow.
Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited, the fatherless and the widow are
oppressed.
The people of the land have practiced
extortion and committed
robbery. They have
oppressed the poor and
needy and have exploited the foreign resident without justice.
Behold, therefore I will bring
strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall
defile thy brightness.
behold, I will bring foreigners against you, the most
ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and will
defile your
splendor.
Thou shalt die the deaths of the
uncircumcised by the hand of
strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
You will die the death of the
uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners. For I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.”
And I will make the rivers dry, and sell the land into the hand of the wicked: and I will make the land waste, and all that is therein, by the hand of strangers: I the LORD have spoken it.
I will make the streams dry up and sell the land to the wicked. By the hands of foreigners I will bring
desolation upon the land and everything in it. I, the LORD, have spoken.
And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
Foreigners, the most
ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. And all the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it.
In that ye have brought into my sanctuary
strangers,
uncircumcised in heart, and
uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to
pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations.
In addition to all your other abominations, you brought in foreigners
uncircumcised in both heart and flesh to occupy My sanctuary; you
defiled My temple when you offered My food—the fat and the blood; you broke My covenant.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; No
stranger,
uncircumcised in heart, nor
uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any
stranger that is among the children of Israel.
This is what the Lord GOD says: No foreigner
uncircumcised in heart and flesh may enter My sanctuary—not even a foreigner who lives among the Israelites.
And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the
strangers that
sojourn among you, which shall
beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel.
You shall
allot it as an inheritance for
yourselves and for the foreigners who dwell among you and who have children. You are to treat them as native-born Israelites; along with you, they shall be
allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
And it shall come to pass, that in what tribe the stranger sojourneth, there shall ye give him his inheritance, saith the Lord GOD.
In whatever tribe a foreigner dwells, you are to
assign his inheritance there,” declares the Lord GOD.
Strangers have
devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not:
yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.
Foreigners
consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is
streaked with gray, but he does not know.
For they have sown the wind, and they shall
reap the
whirlwind: it hath no
stalk: the
bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the
strangers shall
swallow it up.
For they
sow the wind, and they shall
reap the
whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what
sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would
swallow it up.
So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in
Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no
strangers pass through her any more.
Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in
Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, never again to be overrun by foreigners.
In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the
strangers carried away
captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou
wast as one of them.
On the day you stood
aloof while
strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.
But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a
stranger; neither shouldest thou have
rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
But you should not
gloat in that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor
rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor
boast proudly in the day of their distress.
And
oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the
stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
Do not
oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. And do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that
oppress the
hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the
stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who
defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts.
He saith,
Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of
strangers?
“
Yes,” he answered. When Peter entered the house, Jesus
preempted him. “What do you think, Simon?” He asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs and taxes: from their own sons, or from others?”
Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
“From others,” Peter answered. “Then the sons are
exempt,” Jesus declared.
For I was an
hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was
thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a
stranger, and ye took me in:
For I was
hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was
thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you took Me in,
When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
When did we see You a
stranger and take You in, or naked and
clothe You?
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
I was a
stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not
clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, or
athirst, or a
stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You
hungry or
thirsty or a
stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
And they took counsel, and bought with them the
potter’s field, to
bury strangers in.
After
conferring together, they used the money to
buy the
potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.
Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God?”
And the one of them, whose name was
Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a
stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
One of them, named
Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only
visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”
And a
stranger will they not follow, but will
flee from him: for they know not the voice of
strangers.
But they will never follow a
stranger; in fact, they will
flee from him because they do not recognize his voice.”
Phrygia, and
Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of
Libya about
Cyrene, and
strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a
stranger in the land of Madian, where he
begat two sons.
At this remark, Moses fled to the land of
Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.
The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and
exalted the people when they dwelt as
strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.
The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers. He made them into a great people during their stay in Egypt, and with an
uplifted arm He led them out of that land.
(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
Now all the Athenians and foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing more than hearing and
articulating new ideas.
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the
commonwealth of Israel, and
strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
remember that at that time you were separate from Christ,
alienated from the
commonwealth of Israel, and
strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have
lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the
afflicted, if she have
diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted, and
devoting herself to every good work.
By faith he
sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
By faith he dwelt in the promised land as a stranger in a foreign country. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them
afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and
confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and
welcomed them from
afar. And they acknowledged that they were
strangers and exiles on the earth.
Be not
forgetful to
entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
Do not neglect to show
hospitality to
strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
