Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the
vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words
that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My
spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters
that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers
that bare them, and concerning their fathers
that begat them in this land;
For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and the mothers who bore them, and the fathers who fathered them in this land:
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt
shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin
that we have committed against the LORD our God?
When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great
disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin
that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart,
that they may not
hearken unto me:
And you have done more evil than your fathers. See how each of you follows the
stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land
that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not
shew you favour.
So I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
But, The LORD liveth,
that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands
whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land
that I gave unto their fathers.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.
Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall
hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.
But for now I will send for many
fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. After
that I will send for many hunters, and they will
hunt them down on every mountain and hill, even from the clefts of the rocks.
Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.
“Therefore behold, I will inform them, and this time I will make them know My power and My might; then they will know that My name is the LORD.
And thou, even
thyself, shalt discontinue from thine
heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have
kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever.
Thus saith the LORD;
Cursed be the man
that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: “
Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD.
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and
that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of
drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
He is like a tree planted by the waters
that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not
worry in a year of
drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.
As the
partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he
that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a
fool.
Like a
partridge hatching eggs it did not lay is the man who makes a fortune unjustly. In the middle of his days his riches will desert him, and in the end he will be the
fool.”
O LORD, the hope of Israel, all
that forsake thee shall be
ashamed, and they
that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have
forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who
abandon You will be put to shame. All who turn away will be written in the dust, for they have abandoned the LORD, the fountain of living water.
As for me, I have not
hastened from being a
pastor to follow thee: neither have I desired the
woeful day; thou knowest:
that which came out of my lips was right before thee.
But I have not run away from being Your
shepherd; I have not desired the day of
despair. You know
that the
utterance of my lips was spoken in Your presence.
Let them be confounded
that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.
Let my persecutors be put to shame, but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be
terrified, but do not let me be
terrified. Bring upon them the day of
disaster and
shatter them with double destruction.
And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the LORD, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates:
Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, all people of Judah and Jerusalem who enter through these gates.
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
And the vessel
that he made of clay was
marred in the hand of the
potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the
potter to make it.
But the vessel
that he was shaping from the clay became
flawed in his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it seemed best for him to do.
At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to
pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
At any time I might
announce that a nation or kingdom will be uprooted,
torn down, and destroyed.
If
that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will
repent of the evil
that I thought to do unto them.
But if
that nation I
warned turns from its evil, then I will relent of the
disaster I had
planned to bring.
And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
And if at another time I
announce that I will build up and establish a nation or kingdom,
If it do evil in my sight,
that it obey not my voice, then I will
repent of the good,
wherewith I said I would benefit them.
and if it does evil in My sight and does not
listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.
Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and
devise a
device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem
that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am
planning a
disaster for you and
devising a plan against you. Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways, and correct your ways and deeds.’
Will a man leave the snow of
Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters
that come from another place be
forsaken?
Does the snow of
Lebanon ever leave its rocky slopes? Or do its cool waters flowing from a distance ever run dry?
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn incense to worthless idols
that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Attend to me, O LORD. Hear what my accusers are saying!
Shall evil be
recompensed for good? for they have
digged a pit for my soul. Remember
that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have
dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before You to speak good on their behalf, to turn Your wrath from them.
And go forth unto the valley of the son of
Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and
proclaim there the words
that I shall tell thee,
and go out to the Valley of Ben-
hinnom near the entrance of the
Potsherd Gate.
Proclaim there the words I speak to you,
And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which
whosoever heareth, his ears shall
tingle.
saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such
disaster on this place
that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,
Because they have
forsaken me, and have
estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in this place to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that this place shall no more be called
Tophet, nor The valley of the son of
Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter.
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-
hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their
carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
And I will make this city
desolate, and an
hissing; every one
that passeth thereby shall be
astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness,
wherewith their enemies, and they
that seek their lives, shall
straiten them.
I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
Then shalt thou break the
bottle in the sight of the men
that go with thee,
And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a
potter’s vessel,
that cannot be made whole again: and they shall
bury them in
Tophet, till there be no place to
bury.
and you are to
proclaim to them
that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will
shatter this nation and this city, like one
shatters a
potter’s
jar that can never again be repaired. They will
bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to
bury them.
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be
defiled as the place of
Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods.
The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be
defiled like
that place, Topheth—all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil
that I have pronounced against it, because they have
hardened their necks,
that they might not hear my words.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every
disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have
stiffened their necks so as not to
heed My words.’”
Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard
that Jeremiah
prophesied these things.
When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer and the chief official in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah
prophesying these things,
Then Pashur
smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks
that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD.
he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD.
And it came to pass on the
morrow,
that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.
The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.
And thou, Pashur, and all
that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast
prophesied lies.
And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die and be buried—you and all your friends to whom you have
prophesied these lies.’”
For I heard the
defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my
halting, saying,
Peradventure he will be
enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our
revenge on him.
For I have heard the
whispering of many: “Terror is on every side! Report him; let us report him!” All my trusted friends watch for my fall: “Perhaps he will be
deceived so
that we may prevail against him and take our
vengeance upon him.”
But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall
stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly
ashamed; for they shall not
prosper: their
everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
But the LORD is with me like a
fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will
stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an
everlasting disgrace
that will never be forgotten.
But, O LORD of hosts,
that triest the righteous, and seest the
reins and the heart, let me see thy
vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.
O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous, who sees the heart and mind, let me see Your
vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
And let
that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and
repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the
shouting at
noontide;
May
that man be like the cities
that the LORD overthrew without
compassion. May he hear an outcry in the morning and a battle cry at
noon,
Because he
slew me not from the
womb; or
that my mother might have been my grave, and her
womb to be always great with me.
because he did not kill me in the
womb so
that my mother might have been my grave, and her
womb forever enlarged.
Wherefore came I forth out of the
womb to see labour and sorrow,
that my days should be consumed with shame?
Why did I come out of the
womb to see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king
Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and
Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,
This is the word
that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King
Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest
Zephaniah son of Maaseiah. They said,
Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be
that the LORD will deal with us according to all his
wondrous works,
that he may go up from us.
“Please inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is
waging war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all His past wonders, so
that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”
Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to
Zedekiah:
But Jeremiah answered, “You are to tell
Zedekiah that Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war
that are in your hands,
wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which
besiege you without the walls, and I will
assemble them into the midst of this city.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the wall, and I will
assemble their forces in the center of this city.
And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver
Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the
pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those
that seek their life: and he shall
smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not
spare them, neither have
pity, nor have mercy.
‘After
that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officers, and the people in this city who
survive the plague and sword and famine, to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who seek their lives. He will put them to the sword; he will not
spare them or show
pity or
compassion.’
And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.
Furthermore, you are to tell this people
that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.
He
that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he
that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans
that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who
besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of war.
O house of David, thus saith the LORD;
Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him
that is
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and burn
that none can
quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
O house of David, this is what the LORD says: ‘
Administer justice every morning, and
rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of his
oppressor, or My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with no one to
extinguish it because of their evil deeds.
But I will
punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the LORD: and I will
kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall
devour all things round about it.
I will
punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD. I will
kindle a fire in your forest
that will
consume everything around you.’”
And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:
saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David—you and your officials and your people who enter these gates.
But if ye will not hear these words, I
swear by myself, saith the LORD,
that this house shall become a
desolation.
But if you do not obey these words, then I
swear by Myself, declares the LORD,
that this house will become a pile of
rubble.’”
For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art
Gilead unto me, and the head of
Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.
For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like
Gilead to Me, like the summit of
Lebanon; but I will surely turn you into a desert, like cities
that are uninhabited.
Weep ye not for the dead, neither
bemoan him: but
weep sore for him
that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.
Do not
weep for the dead king; do not
mourn his loss.
Weep bitterly for the one who is exiled, for he will never return to see his native land.
Woe unto him
that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong;
that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
“
Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and fails to pay their wages,
That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with
cedar, and painted with
vermilion.
who says, ‘I will build myself a great palace, with
spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts windows in it, panels it with
cedar, and paints it with
vermilion.
I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
I
warned you when you were secure. You said, ‘I will not
listen.’ This has been your way from youth,
that you have not obeyed My voice.
O inhabitant of
Lebanon,
that makest thy nest in the cedars, how
gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in
travail!
And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
In fact, I will hand you over to those you
dread, who want to take your life—to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans.
And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
I will
hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another land, where neither of you were born—and there you both will die.
Is this man Coniah a
despised broken
idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
Is this man Coniah a
despised and
shattered pot, a
jar that no one wants? Why are he and his descendants
hurled out and cast into a land they do not know?
Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man
that shall not
prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall
prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
This is what the LORD says: “
Enroll this man as childless, a man who will not
prosper in his lifetime. None of his descendants will
prosper to sit on the throne of David or to rule again in Judah.”
Woe be unto the pastors
that destroy and
scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the
shepherds who tend My people: “You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your deeds, declares the LORD.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and
prosper, and shall
execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will
administer justice and righteousness in the land.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’
I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an
horrible thing: they commit
adultery, and walk in lies: they
strengthen also the hands of evildoers,
that none
doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as
Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as
Gomorrah.
And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a
horrible thing: They commit
adultery and walk in lies. They
strengthen the hands of evildoers, so
that no one turns his back on wickedness. They are all like
Sodom to Me; the people of Jerusalem are like
Gomorrah.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts,
Hearken not unto the words of the prophets
that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not
listen to the words of the prophets who
prophesy to you. They are filling you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
They say still unto them
that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one
that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
They keep saying to those who
despise Me, ‘The LORD says
that you will have peace,’ and to
everyone who walks in the
stubbornness of his own heart, ‘No
harm will come to you.’
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
“Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.
I have heard what the prophets said,
that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.
“I have heard the sayings of the prophets who
prophesy lies in My name: ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’
How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets
that prophesy lies?
yea, they are prophets of the
deceit of their own heart;
How long will this continue in the hearts of these prophets who
prophesy falsehood, these prophets of the
delusion of their own minds?
Which think to cause my people to
forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for
Baal.
They suppose the dreams
that they tell one another will make My people
forget My name, just as their fathers
forgot My name through the worship of
Baal.
The prophet
that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he
that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the
chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.
Let the prophet who has a dream retell it, but let him who has My word speak it truthfully. For what is straw compared to grain?” declares the LORD.
Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
“Is not My word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that smashes a rock?”
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD,
that steal my words every one from his neighbour.
“Therefore behold,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who
steal from one another words they attribute to Me.”
Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.
“
Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who
wag their own tongues and
proclaim, ‘The LORD declares it.’”
Behold, I am against them
that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to
err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
“Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those who
prophesy false dreams and retell them to lead My people
astray with their
reckless lies. It was not I who sent them or commanded them, and they are of no benefit at all to these people,” declares the LORD.
And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people,
that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even
punish that man and his house.
As for the prophet or priest or
anyone who claims, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ I will
punish that man and his household.
And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his burden; for ye have
perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
But refer no more to the burden of the LORD, for each man’s word becomes the burden, so
that you
pervert the words of the living God, the LORD of Hosts, our God.
Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly
forget you, and I will
forsake you, and the city
that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
therefore I will surely
forget you and will cast you out of My presence, both you and the city
that I gave to you and your fathers.
And I will bring an
everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.
The LORD shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the LORD, after
that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away
captive Jeconiah the son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
After
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away Jeconiah son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, as well as the officials of Judah and the
craftsmen and metalsmiths from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD.
One
basket had very good figs, even like the figs
that are first ripe: and the other
basket had very
naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
One
basket had very good figs, like those
that ripen early, but the other
basket contained very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.
Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them
that are carried away
captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good.
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, so I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.
And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.
I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD. They will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with all their heart.
And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give
Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem,
that remain in this land, and them
that dwell in the land of Egypt:
But like the bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the
remnant of Jerusalem—those remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.
And I will send the sword, the famine, and the
pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land
that I gave unto them and to their fathers.
And I will send against them sword and famine and plague, until they have perished from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”
