And they
laughed him to
scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the
damsel, and them
that were with him, and entereth in where the
damsel was lying.
And they
laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.
And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the
synagogue: and many hearing him were
astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him,
that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the
synagogue, and many who heard Him were
astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles?
And he could there do no mighty work, save
that he laid his hands upon a few sick
folk, and
healed them.
So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and
heal them.
And commanded them
that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no
scrip, no bread, no money in their
purse:
He
instructed them to take nothing but a staff for the journey—no bread, no
bag, no money in their belts—
And he said unto them, In what place
soever ye enter into an house, there
abide till ye depart from
that place.
And He told them, “When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that area.
And
whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence,
shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them.
Verily I say unto you, It shall be more
tolerable for
Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for
that city.
If
anyone will not
welcome you or
listen to you,
shake the dust off your feet when you leave
that place, as a testimony against them.”
And they went out, and preached
that men should
repent.
So they set out and preached
that the people should
repent.
And they cast out many devils, and
anointed with oil many
that were sick, and
healed them.
They also drove out many demons and
healed many of the sick,
anointing them with oil.
And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said,
That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do
shew forth themselves in him.
Now King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead!
That is why
miraculous powers are at work in him.”
Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
Others were saying, “He is
Elijah,” and still others, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
For Herod feared John, knowing
that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him
gladly.
because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing
that he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s words, he was greatly
perplexed; yet he
listened to him
gladly.
And when a convenient day was come,
that Herod on his
birthday made a
supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of
Galilee;
On Herod’s
birthday, her opportunity arose. Herod held a
banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of
Galilee.
And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them
that sat with him, the king said unto the
damsel, Ask of me
whatsoever thou
wilt, and I will give it thee.
When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the
girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”
And she came in
straightway with
haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will
that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
At once the
girl hurried back to the king with her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a
platter immediately.”
And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and
beheaded him in the prison,
So without delay, the king commanded
that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner, who went and
beheaded him in the prison.
Send them away,
that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and
buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding
countryside and villages and
buy themselves something to eat.”
And they
that did eat of the
loaves were about five thousand men.
And there were five thousand men who had eaten the
loaves.
And he saw them
toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
He could see that the disciples were straining to row, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them,
And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
and ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.
And
whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and
besought him
that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and
begged Him just to let them touch the
fringe of His
cloak. And all who touched Him were
healed.
And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with
defiled,
that is to say, with
unwashen, hands, they found fault.
and they saw some of His disciples eating with hands
that were
defiled—
that is, unwashed.
And he said unto them, Full well ye
reject the commandment of God,
that ye may keep your own tradition.
He went on to say, “You
neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your own tradition.
But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is
Corban,
that is to say, a gift, by
whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
But you say
that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is
Corban’ (
that is, a gift devoted to God),
There is nothing from without a man,
that entering into him can
defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they
that defile the man.
Nothing
that enters a man from the outside can
defile him; but the things
that come out of a man, these are what
defile him.”
And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive,
that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot
defile him;
“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing
that enters a man from the outside can
defile him,
And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
He continued: “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him.
And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and
Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be
hid.
Jesus left
that place and went to the region of Tyre. Not wanting
anyone to know He was there, He entered a house, but was unable to escape their notice.
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she
besought him
that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
Now she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking Jesus to drive the
demon out of her daughter.
And they bring unto him one
that was
deaf, and had an
impediment in his speech; and they
beseech him to put his hand upon him.
Some people brought to Him a man who was
deaf and hardly able to speak, and they
begged Jesus to place His hand on him.
And looking up to heaven, he
sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha,
that is, Be opened.
And looking up to heaven, He
sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”).
And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
Jesus ordered them not to tell
anyone. But the more He ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.
And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.
They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well.
So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.
The people
ate and were satisfied, and the disciples
picked up seven
basketfuls of broken pieces
that were left over.
And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.
And about four thousand men were present. As soon as Jesus had dismissed the crowd,
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.
So they began to
discuss with one another the fact
that they had no bread.
And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?”
After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea
Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say
that I am?
Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea
Philippi. On the way, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say I am?”
And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.
And he began to teach them,
that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and
scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Then He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and
scribes, and
that He must be killed and after three days rise again.
And he spake
that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to
rebuke him.
He spoke this message quite
frankly, and Peter took Him aside and began to
rebuke Him.
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he
rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me,
Satan: for thou savourest not the things
that be of God, but the things
that be of men.
But Jesus, turning and looking at His disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me,
Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
And he said unto them,
Verily I say unto you,
That there be some of them
that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.”
For he
wist not what to say; for they were
sore afraid.
For they were all so
terrified that Peter did not know what else to say.
And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
Then a cloud appeared and
enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son.
Listen to Him!”
And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus
admonished them not to tell
anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.
So they kept this matter to themselves,
discussing what it meant to rise from the dead.
And they asked him, saying, Why say the
scribes that Elias must first come?
And they asked Jesus, “Why do the
scribes say
that Elijah must come first?”
And he answered and told them, Elias
verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man,
that he must suffer many things, and be set at
nought.
He replied, “
Elijah does indeed come first, and he restores all things. Why then is it written
that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected?
But I say unto you,
That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him
whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.
But I tell you
that Elijah has indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they wished, just as it is written about him.”
And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a
dumb spirit;
Someone in the crowd replied, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a spirit
that makes him
mute.
And
wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples
that they should cast him out; and they could not.
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
“If You can?”
echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes!”
When Jesus saw
that the people came running together, he
rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou
dumb and
deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
When Jesus saw
that a crowd had come running, He
rebuked the unclean spirit. “You
deaf and
mute spirit,” He said, “I command you to come out and never enter him again.”
And the spirit
cried, and rent him
sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead;
insomuch that many said, He is dead.
After
shrieking and
convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a
corpse, so
that many said, “He is dead.”
And they departed thence, and passed through
Galilee; and he would not
that any man should know it.
Going on from there, they passed through
Galilee. But Jesus did not want
anyone to know,
For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
because He was teaching His disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”
But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.
And he came to
Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it
that ye disputed among
yourselves by the way?
Then they came to
Capernaum. While Jesus was in the house, He asked them, “What were you
discussing on the way?”
Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and
whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him
that sent me.
“
Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me, and
whoever welcomes Me welcomes not only Me, but the One who sent Me.”
But Jesus said,
Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a
miracle in my name,
that can lightly speak evil of me.
“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied. “For no one who performs a
miracle in My name can turn around and speak evil of Me.
For he that is not against us is on our part.
For
whoever is not against us is for us.
And
whosoever shall
offend one of these little ones
that believe in me, it is better for him
that a
millstone were
hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better for him to have a large
millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea.
And if thy hand
offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into
hell, into the fire
that never shall be
quenched:
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
crippled than to have two hands and go into
hell, into the
unquenchable fire.
And if thy foot
offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter
halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into
hell, into the fire
that never shall be
quenched:
If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
lame than to have two feet and be thrown into
hell.
And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was
wont, he taught them again.
Then Jesus left
that place and went into the region of
Judea, beyond the Jordan. Again the crowds came to Him and He taught them, as was His custom.
And they brought young children to him,
that he should touch them: and his disciples
rebuked those
that brought them.
Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them, and the disciples
rebuked those who brought them.
And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and
kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do
that I may
inherit eternal life?
As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and
knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.
And he was
sad at
that saying, and went away
grieved: for he had great possessions.
But the man was
saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
And the disciples were
astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them
that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
And the disciples were
amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
And Jesus answered and said,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man
that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel
But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would
that thou shouldest do for us
whatsoever we shall desire.
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”
And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.
They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
They answered, “Grant that one of us may sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left in Your glory.”
But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup
that I drink of? and be
baptized with the baptism
that I am
baptized with?
“You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I will drink, or be
baptized with the baptism I will undergo?”
And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup
that I drink of; and with the baptism
that I am
baptized withal shall ye be
baptized:
“We can,” the brothers answered. “You will drink the cup
that I drink,” Jesus said, “and you will be
baptized with the baptism
that I undergo.
But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know
that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise
lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
And when he heard
that it was Jesus of
Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
When he heard
that it was Jesus of
Nazareth, he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And many charged him
that he should hold his peace: but he
cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Many people
admonished him to be silent, but he
cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And Jesus answered and said unto him, What
wilt thou
that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord,
that I might receive my sight.
“What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “Rabboni,” said the blind man, “let me see again.”
And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye
that the Lord hath need of him; and
straightway he will send him
hither.
If
anyone asks, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it and will return it shortly.’”
And certain of them
that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the
colt?
and some who were standing there asked, “Why are you untying the
colt?”
And they
that went before, and they
that followed,
cried, saying,
Hosanna; Blessed is he
that cometh in the name of the Lord:
The ones who went
ahead and those who followed were
shouting: “
Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Blessed be the kingdom of our father David,
that cometh in the name of the Lord:
Hosanna in the highest.
“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “
Hosanna in the highest!”
And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were
buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.
And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
For
verily I say unto you,
That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe
that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have
whatsoever he saith.
“Truly I tell you
that if
anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes
that it will happen, it will be done for him.
Therefore I say unto you, What things
soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe
that ye receive them, and ye shall havethem.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
And when ye stand praying,
forgive, if ye have ought against any:
that your Father also which is in heaven may
forgive you your trespasses.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against another,
forgive it, so
that your Father in heaven will
forgive your trespasses as well.”
But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
But if we say, ‘From men’...” they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John truly was a prophet.
At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the
vineyard.
And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
“Teacher,” they said, “we know
that You are
honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”
