This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh.
It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
Behold,
there come seven years of great
plenty throughout all
the land of Egypt:
Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
And
there shall arise after
them seven years of famine; and all
the plenty shall be forgotten in
the land of Egypt; and
the famine shall
consume the land;
but seven years of famine will follow
them.
Then all
the abundance in
the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and
the famine will
devastate the land.
And
the plenty shall not be known in
the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very
grievous.
The abundance in the land will not be remembered, since the famine that follows it will be so severe.
And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
Moreover, because the dream was given to Pharaoh in two versions, the matter has been decreed by God, and He will carry it out shortly.
Now
therefore let Pharaoh look out a man
discreet and wise, and set him over
the land of Egypt.
Now,
therefore, Pharaoh should look for a
discerning and wise man and set him over
the land of Egypt.
Let Pharaoh do this, and let him
appoint officers over
the land, and take up
the fifth part of
the land of Egypt in
the seven
plenteous years.
Let Pharaoh take action and
appoint commissioners over
the land to take a fifth of
the harvest of Egypt during
the seven years of abundance.
And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.
This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his officials.
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
So Pharaoh asked
them, “Can we find
anyone like this man, in whom
the Spirit of God abides?”
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph,
Forasmuch as God hath shewed
thee all this,
there is none so
discreet and wise as thou art:
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you,
there is no one as
discerning and wise as you.
Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.
You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
Pharaoh also told Joseph, “I
hereby place you over all
the land of Egypt.”
And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and
arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;
Then Pharaoh removed
the signet ring from his finger, put it on Joseph’s finger, clothed him in garments of fine linen, and placed a gold chain around his neck.
And he made him to
ride in
the second
chariot which he had; and
they cried before him, Bow
the knee: and he made him ruler over all
the land of Egypt.
He had Joseph
ride in his second
chariot, with men calling out before him, “Bow
the knee!” So he placed him over all
the land of Egypt.
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.
And Pharaoh declared to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your permission, no one in all the land of Egypt shall lift his hand or foot.”
And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath
the daughter of
Poti-pherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all
the land of Egypt.
Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah, and he gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph took charge of all the land of Egypt.
And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.
Now Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout the land of Egypt.
And in
the seven
plenteous years
the earth brought forth by handfuls.
During
the seven years of abundance,
the land brought forth
bountifully.
And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.
During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it.
And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.
So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance, like
the sand of
the sea, that he stopped keeping
track of it; for it was beyond measure.
And unto Joseph were born two sons before
the years of famine came, which Asenath
the daughter of
Poti-pherah priest of On bare unto him.
Before the years of famine arrived, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
And
the name of
the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in
the land of my
affliction.
And
the second son he named Ephraim, saying, “God has made me fruitful in
the land of my
affliction.”
And
the seven years of
plenteousness, that was in
the land of Egypt, were ended.
When the seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end,
And
the seven years of
dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and
the dearth was in all lands; but in all
the land of Egypt
there was bread.
the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. And although there was famine in every country, there was food throughout the land of Egypt.
And when all
the land of Egypt was
famished,
the people
cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all
the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do.
When extreme hunger came to all
the land of Egypt and
the people
cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told all
the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.”
And
the famine was over all
the face of
the earth: and Joseph opened all
the storehouses, and sold unto
the Egyptians; and
the famine waxed
sore in
the land of Egypt.
When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to
buy corn; because that
the famine was so
sore in all lands.
And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to
buy grain, because
the famine was severe over all
the earth.
Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?”
And he said, Behold, I have heard that
there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and
buy for us from
thence; that we may live, and not die.
“Look,” he added, “I have heard that
there is grain in Egypt. Go down
there and
buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”
And
the sons of Israel came to
buy corn among those that came: for
the famine was in
the land of
Canaan.
So
the sons of Israel were among those who came to
buy grain, since
the famine had also spread to
the land of
Canaan.
And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; he was the one who sold grain to all its people. So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew
them, but made himself strange unto
them, and spake roughly unto
them; and he said unto
them, Whence come ye? And
they said, From
the land of
Canaan to
buy food.
And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized
them, but he treated
them as strangers and spoke harshly to
them. “Where have you come from?” he asked. “From
the land of
Canaan,”
they replied. “We are here to
buy food.”
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.
And Joseph remembered
the dreams which he dreamed of
them, and said unto
them, Ye are
spies; to see
the nakedness of
the land ye are come.
Joseph remembered his dreams about
them and said, “You are
spies! You have come to see if our land is
vulnerable.”
And
they said unto him,
Nay, my lord, but to
buy food are thy servants come.
“Not so, my lord,”
they replied. “Your servants have come to
buy food.
And he said unto
them,
Nay, but to see
the nakedness of
the land ye are come.
“No,” he told
them. “You have come to see if our land is
vulnerable.”
And
they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren,
the sons of one man in
the land of
Canaan; and, behold,
the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
But
they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers,
the sons of one man in
the land of
Canaan.
The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
And Joseph said unto
them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are
spies:
Then Joseph declared, “Just as I said, you are
spies!
Hereby ye shall be proved: By
the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come
hither.
And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
Send one of you, and let him
fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether
there be any truth in you: or else by
the life of Pharaoh surely ye are
spies.
Send one of your number to get your brother;
the rest of you will be confined so that
the truth of your words may be tested. If
they are untrue,
then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!”
And he put them all together into ward three days.
So Joseph imprisoned them for three days,
And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:
and on the third day he said to them, “I fear God. So do this and you will live:
If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:
If you are
honest, leave one of your brothers in
custody while
the rest of you go and take back grain to
relieve the hunger of your households.
But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be
verified, and ye shall not die. And
they did so.
Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be
verified, that you may not die.” And to this
they consented.
And
they said one to another, We are
verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw
the anguish of his soul, when he
besought us, and we would not hear;
therefore is this distress come upon us.
Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his
anguish when he
pleaded with us, but we would not
listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
And
Reuben answered
them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against
the child; and ye would not hear?
therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
And
Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against
the boy? But you would not
listen. Now we must account for his blood!”
And
they knew not that Joseph understood
them; for he spake unto
them by an
interpreter.
They did not
realize that Joseph understood
them, since
there was an
interpreter between
them.
And he turned himself about from
them, and
wept; and returned to
them again, and communed with
them, and took from
them Simeon, and bound him before
their eyes.
And he turned away from
them and
wept. When he turned back and spoke to
them, he took
Simeon from
them and had him bound before
their eyes.
Then Joseph commanded to fill
their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his
sack, and to give
them provision for
the way: and thus did he unto
them.
Then Joseph gave orders to fill
their bags with grain, to return each man’s silver to his
sack, and to give
them provisions for
their journey. This order was carried out,
And
they laded their asses with
the corn, and departed
thence.
and
they loaded
the grain on
their donkeys and departed.
And as one of
them opened his
sack to give his
ass provender in
the inn, he
espied his money; for, behold, it was in his
sack’s mouth.
At
the place where
they lodged for
the night, one of
them opened his
sack to get feed for his
donkey, and he saw his silver in
the mouth of
the sack.
And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my
sack: and
their heart failed
them, and
they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?
“My silver has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is here in my
sack.”
Their hearts
sank, and
trembling,
they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”
And
they came unto Jacob
their father unto
the land of
Canaan, and told him all that
befell unto
them; saying,
When
they reached
their father Jacob in
the land of
Canaan,
they described to him all that had happened to
them:
The man, who is
the lord of
the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for
spies of
the country.
“
The man who is lord of
the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of
spying on
the country.
We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and
the youngest is this day with our father in
the land of
Canaan.
We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and
the youngest is now with our father in
the land of
Canaan.’
And
the man,
the lord of
the country, said unto us,
Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for
the famine of your households, and be gone:
Then the man who is lord of
the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are
honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to
relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
And bring your youngest brother unto me:
then shall I know that ye are no
spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall
traffick in
the land.
But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not
spies but
honest men.
Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in
the land.’”
And it came to pass as
they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s
bundle of money was in his
sack: and when both
they and
their father saw
the bundles of money,
they were afraid.
As
they began emptying
their sacks,
there in each man’s
sack was his
bag of silver! And when
they and
their father saw
the bags of silver,
they were dismayed.
And Jacob
their father said unto
them, Me have ye
bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and
Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all
these things are against me.
Their father Jacob said to
them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and
Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going against me!”
And
Reuben spake unto his father, saying,
Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to
thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to
thee again.
Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”
And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief
befall him by
the way in
the which ye go,
then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to
the grave.
But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down
there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any
harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to
Sheol in sorrow.”
And
the famine was
sore in
the land.
Now the famine was still severe in the land.
And it came to pass, when
they had eaten up
the corn which
they had brought out of Egypt,
their father said unto
them, Go again,
buy us a little food.
So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all
the grain
they had brought from Egypt,
their father said to
them, “Go back and
buy us a little more food.”
And Judah spake unto him, saying,
The man did solemnly
protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But Judah replied, “
The man solemnly
warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’
If thou
wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and
buy thee food:
If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and
buy food for you.
But if thou
wilt not send him, we will not go down: for
the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”
And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
“Why did you bring this trouble upon me?” Israel asked. “Why did you tell the man you had another brother?”
And
they said,
The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to
the tenor of
these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send
the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die—neither we, nor you, nor our children.
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto
thee, and set him before
thee,
then let me bear
the blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you,
then may I bear
the guilt before you all my life.
And
their father Israel said unto
them, If it must be so now, do this; take of
the best fruits in
the land in your vessels, and carry down
the man a present, a little
balm, and a little honey, spices, and
myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
Then their father Israel said to
them, “If it must be so,
then do this: Put some of
the best products of
the land in your packs and carry
them down as a gift for
the man—a little
balm and a little honey, spices and
myrrh, pistachios and almonds.
And take double money in your hand; and
the money that was brought again in
the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand;
peradventure it was an oversight:
Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:
Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
And God
Almighty give you mercy before
the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be
bereaved of my children, I am
bereaved.
May God
Almighty grant you mercy before
the man, that he may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am
bereaved, I am
bereaved.”
And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
So
the men took
these gifts, along with double
the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well.
Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
And when Joseph saw Benjamin with
them, he said to
the ruler of his house, Bring
these men home, and
slay, and make ready; for
these men shall
dine with me at
noon.
When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers, he said to
the steward of his house, “Take
these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, for
they shall
dine with me at
noon.”
And
the man did as Joseph
bade; and
the man brought
the men into Joseph’s house.
The man did as Joseph had commanded and took the brothers to Joseph’s house.
And
the men were afraid, because
they were brought into Joseph’s house; and
they said, Because of
the money that was returned in our sacks at
the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for
bondmen, and our
asses.
But
the brothers were
frightened that
they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here because of
the silver that was returned in our bags
the first time,”
they said. “
They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our
donkeys.”
And
they came near to
the steward of Joseph’s house, and
they communed with him at
the door of
the house,
So
they approached Joseph’s
steward and spoke to him at
the entrance to
the house.
And said, O sir, we came indeed down at
the first time to
buy food:
“Please, sir,”
they said, “we really did come down here
the first time to
buy food.
And it came to pass, when we came to
the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in
the mouth of his
sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.
But when we came to
the place we
lodged for
the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in
the mouth of his
sack! It was
the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.
And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and
the God of your father, hath given you
treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought
Simeon out unto
them.
“It is fine,” said
the steward. “Do not be afraid. Your God,
the God of your father, gave you
the treasure that was in your sacks. I received your silver.”
Then he brought
Simeon out to
them.
And
the man brought
the men into Joseph’s house, and gave
them water, and
they washed
their feet; and he gave
their asses provender.
And
the steward took
the men into Joseph’s house, gave
them water to wash
their feet, and provided food for
their donkeys.
And
they made ready
the present against Joseph came at
noon: for
they heard that
they should eat bread
there.
Since
the brothers had been told that
they were going to eat a meal
there,
they prepared
their gift for Joseph’s arrival at
noon.
And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him.
And he asked
them of
their welfare, and said, Is your father well,
the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?
He asked if they were well, and then he asked, “How is your elderly father you told me about? Is he still alive?”
And
they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And
they bowed down
their heads, and made
obeisance.
“Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be
gracious unto
thee, my son.
When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother,
the one you told me about?”
Then he declared, “May God be
gracious to you, my son.”
And Joseph made
haste; for his
bowels did
yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to
weep; and he entered into his chamber, and
wept there.
Joseph
hurried out because he was moved to tears for his brother, and he went to a private room to
weep.
And he washed his face, and went out, and
refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.
Then he washed his face and came back out. Regaining his
composure, he said, “Serve
the meal.”
And
they set on for him by himself, and for
them by
themselves, and for
the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by
themselves: because
the Egyptians might not eat bread with
the Hebrews; for that is an
abomination unto
the Egyptians.
They separately served Joseph, his brothers, and
the Egyptians.
They ate separately because
the Egyptians would not eat with
the Hebrews, since that was
detestable to
them.
And
they sat before him,
the firstborn according to his
birthright, and
the youngest according to his youth: and
the men
marvelled one at another.
They were seated before Joseph in order by age, from
the firstborn to
the youngest, and
the men looked at one another in
astonishment.
And he took and sent messes unto
them from before him: but Benjamin’s
mess was five times so much as any of
theirs. And
they drank, and were
merry with him.
When
the portions were served to
them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times larger than any of
the others. So
they feasted and
drank freely with Joseph.
And he commanded
the steward of his house, saying, Fill
the men’s sacks with food, as much as
they can carry, and put every man’s money in his
sack’s mouth.
Then Joseph
instructed his
steward: “Fill
the men’s sacks with as much food as
they can carry, and put each one’s silver in
the mouth of his
sack.
And put my cup,
the silver cup, in
the sack’s mouth of
the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to
the word that Joseph had spoken.
Put my cup,
the silver one, in
the mouth of
the youngest one’s
sack, along with
the silver for his grain.” So
the steward did as Joseph had
instructed.
As soon as
the morning was light,
the men were sent away,
they and
their asses.
And when
they were gone out of
the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his
steward, Up, follow after
the men; and when thou
dost overtake
them, say unto
them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
They had not gone far from
the city when Joseph told his
steward, “Pursue
the men at once, and when you overtake
them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
