And thou shalt go down before me to
Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto
thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou
tarry, till I come to
thee, and
shew thee what thou shalt do.
And you shall go before me to
Gilgal, and surely I will come to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
And when
they came thither to
the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and
the Spirit of God came upon him, and he
prophesied among
them.
When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him.
Then the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with
them.
And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among
the prophets,
then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto
the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among
the prophets?
All those who had formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with
the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to
the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among
the prophets?”
And one of
the same place answered and said, But who is
their father?
Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among
the prophets?
Then a man who lived
there replied, “And who is
their father?” So
the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among
the prophets?”
And when he had made an end of
prophesying, he came to
the high place.
And when Saul had finished
prophesying, he went up to
the high place.
And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant,
Whither went ye? And he said, To seek
the asses: and when we saw that
they were no where, we came to Samuel.
Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where did you go?” “To look for
the donkeys,” Saul replied. “When we saw
they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
“Tell me,” Saul’s uncle asked, “what did Samuel say to you?”
And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that
the asses were found. But of
the matter of
the kingdom,
whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
And Saul replied, “He
assured us that
the donkeys had been found.” But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about
the kingship.
And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
After this, Samuel summoned
the people to
the LORD at
Mizpah And said unto
the children of Israel, Thus saith
the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of
the hand of
the Egyptians, and out of
the hand of all kingdoms, and of
them that
oppressed you:
and said to
the Israelites, “This is what
the LORD,
the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I
rescued you from
the hands of
the Egyptians and of all
the kingdoms that
oppressed you.’
And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your
adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him,
Nay, but set a king over us. Now
therefore present
yourselves before
the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
But
today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions, and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ Now
therefore present
yourselves before
the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected.
When he had caused
the tribe of Benjamin to come near by
their families,
the family of Matri was taken, and Saul
the son of
Kish was taken: and when
they sought him, he could not be found.
Then he had
the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans, and
the clan of Matri was selected. Finally, Saul son of
Kish was selected. But when
they looked for him,
they could not find him.
Therefore they enquired of
the LORD further, if
the man should yet come thither. And
the LORD answered, Behold, he hath
hid himself among
the stuff.
So again
they inquired of
the LORD, “Has
the man come here yet?” And
the LORD replied, “Behold, he has hidden himself among
the baggage.”
And
they ran and
fetched him
thence: and when he stood among
the people, he was higher than any of
the people from his shoulders and upward.
So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of the others.
And Samuel said to all
the people, See ye him whom
the LORD hath chosen, that
there is none like him among all
the people? And all
the people
shouted, and said, God save
the king.
Samuel said to all
the people, “Do you see
the one
the LORD has chosen?
There is no one like him among all
the people.” And all
the people
shouted, “Long live
the king!”
Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
Then Samuel explained to
the people
the rights of
kingship. He wrote
them on a
scroll and laid it up before
the LORD. And Samuel sent all
the people away, each to his own home.
And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, and
the men of
valor whose hearts God had touched went with him.
But
the children of
Belial said, How shall this man save us? And
they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
But some worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” So
they despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul remained silent about it.
Soon Nahash
the Ammonite came up and laid siege to
Jabesh-
gilead. All
the men of
Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.”
And Nahash
the Ammonite answered
them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash
the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And
the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all
the coasts of Israel: and
then, if
there be no man to save us, we will come out to
thee.
“Hold off for seven days,” replied
the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If
there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
Then came
the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told
the tidings in
the ears of
the people: and all
the people lifted up
their voices, and
wept.
When
the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and relayed
these words in
the hearing of
the people,
they all
wept aloud.
And, behold, Saul came after
the herd out of
the field; and Saul said, What aileth
the people that
they weep? And
they told him
the tidings of
the men of
Jabesh.
Just
then Saul was returning from
the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles
the people?” asked Saul. “Why are
they weeping?” And
they relayed to him
the words of
the men from
Jabesh.
And
the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those
tidings, and his anger was
kindled greatly.
When Saul heard
their words,
the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent
them throughout all
the coasts of Israel by
the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And
the fear of
the LORD fell on
the people, and
they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut
them into pieces, and sent
them by messengers throughout
the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to
the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.”
Then the terror of
the LORD fell upon
the people, and
they turned out as one man.
And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
And when Saul numbered them at Bezek, there were 300,000 Israelites and 30,000 men of Judah.
And
they said unto
the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto
the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, To
morrow, by that time
the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And
the messengers came and shewed it to
the men of
Jabesh; and
they were
glad.
Therefore the men of
Jabesh said, To
morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
Then the men of
Jabesh said to Nahash, “
Tomorrow we will come out, and you can do with us whatever seems good to you.”
And it was so on
the morrow, that Saul put
the people in three companies; and
they came into
the midst of
the host in
the morning watch, and
slew the Ammonites until
the heat of
the day: and it came to pass, that
they which remained were scattered, so that two of
them were not left together.
The next day Saul organized
the troops into three divisions, and during
the morning watch
they invaded
the camp of
the Ammonites and slaughtered
them, until
the hottest part of
the day. And
the survivors were so scattered that no two of
them were left together.
And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not reign over us? Bring those men here so we can kill them!”
And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day, for
today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”
Then said Samuel to
the people, Come, and let us go to
Gilgal, and renew
the kingdom
there.
Then Samuel said to
the people, “Come, let us go to
Gilgal and renew
the kingship there.”
And all
the people went to
Gilgal; and
there they made Saul king before
the LORD in
Gilgal; and
there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before
the LORD; and
there Saul and all
the men of Israel
rejoiced greatly.
So all
the people went to
Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in
the presence of
the LORD.
There they sacrificed peace offerings before
the LORD, and Saul and all
the Israelites
rejoiced greatly.
And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have
hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I have
listened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and I have set over you a king.
And now, behold,
the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my
childhood unto this day.
Now here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
Behold, here I am: witness against me before
the LORD, and before his
anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose
ass have I taken? or whom have I
defrauded? whom have I
oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any
bribe to blind mine eyes
therewith? and I will restore it you.
Here I am. Bear witness against me before
the LORD and before His
anointed: Whose ox or
donkey have I taken? Whom have I
cheated or
oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a
bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
And
they said, Thou hast not
defrauded us, nor
oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
“You have not wronged us or
oppressed us,”
they replied, “nor have you taken anything from
the hand of man.”
And he said unto
them,
The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And
they answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to
them, “
The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,”
they replied.
And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
Then Samuel said to the people, “The LORD is the One who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.
Now present
yourselves, so that I may
confront you before
the LORD with all
the righteous acts He has done for you and your fathers.
When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers
cried unto
the LORD,
then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made
them dwell in this place.
When Jacob went to Egypt, your fathers
cried out to
the LORD, and He sent
them Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and settled
them in this place.
And when
they forgat the LORD
their God, he sold
them into
the hand of Sisera, captain of
the host of Hazor, and into
the hand of
the Philistines, and into
the hand of
the king of Moab, and
they fought against
them.
But
they forgot the LORD
their God, and He sold
them into
the hand of Sisera
the commander of
the army of Hazor, and into
the hands of
the Philistines and
the king of Moab, who fought against
them.
And
they cried unto
the LORD, and said, We have
sinned, because we have
forsaken the LORD, and have served
Baalim and
Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of
the hand of our enemies, and we will serve
thee.
Then they cried out to
the LORD and said, ‘We have
sinned, for we have
forsaken the LORD and served
the Baals and Ashtoreths. Now deliver us from
the hands of our enemies, that we may serve You.’
And
the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and
Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of
the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
So
the LORD sent Jerubbaal,
Barak,
Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from
the hands of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt securely.
And when ye saw that Nahash
the king of
the children of
Ammon came against you, ye said unto me,
Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when
the LORD your God was your king.
But when you saw that Nahash king of
the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to rule over us’—even though
the LORD your God was your king.
Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.
Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you requested. Behold, the LORD has placed a king over you.
If ye will fear
the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not
rebel against
the commandment of
the LORD,
then shall both ye and also
the king that reigneth over you continue following
the LORD your God:
If you fear
the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and if you do not
rebel against
the command of
the LORD, and if both you and
the king who reigns over you follow
the LORD your God,
then all will be well.
But if ye will not obey
the voice of
the LORD, but
rebel against
the commandment of
the LORD,
then shall
the hand of
the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
But if you disobey
the LORD and
rebel against His command,
then the hand of
the LORD will be against you as it was against your fathers.
Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.
Now, therefore, stand and see this great thing that the LORD will do before your eyes.
Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto
the LORD, and he shall send
thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in
the sight of
the LORD, in asking you a king.
Is it not
the wheat harvest
today? I will call on
the LORD to send
thunder and rain, so that you will know and see what a great evil you have committed in
the sight of
the LORD by asking for a king.”
So Samuel called unto
the LORD; and
the LORD sent
thunder and rain that day: and all
the people greatly feared
the LORD and Samuel.
So Samuel called to
the LORD, and on that day
the LORD sent
thunder and rain. As a result, all
the people greatly feared
the LORD and Samuel.
And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
They pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to
the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die! For we have added to all our sins
the evil of asking for a king.”
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
Do not turn aside after worthless things that cannot profit you or deliver you, for they are empty.
For
the LORD will not
forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased
the LORD to make you his people.
Indeed, for
the sake of His great name,
the LORD will not
abandon His people, because He was pleased to make you His own.
Moreover as for me, God
forbid that I should sin against
the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you
the good and
the right way:
As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you the good and right way.
Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.
Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel;
whereof two thousand were with Saul in
Michmash and in mount
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and
the rest of
the people he sent every man to his tent.
He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at
Michmash and in
the hill country of
Bethel, and a thousand were with
Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And
the rest of
the troops he sent away, each to his own home.
And
Jonathan smote the garrison of
the Philistines that was in Geba, and
the Philistines heard of it. And Saul
blew the trumpet throughout all
the land, saying, Let
the Hebrews hear.
Then Jonathan attacked
the Philistine outpost at Geba, and
the Philistines heard about it. So Saul
blew the ram’s horn throughout
the land, saying, “Let
the Hebrews hear!”
And all Israel heard say that Saul had
smitten a garrison of
the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in
abomination with
the Philistines. And
the people were called together after Saul to
Gilgal.
And all Israel heard
the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of
the Philistines, and now Israel has become a
stench to
the Philistines!”
Then the people were summoned to join Saul at
Gilgal.
And
the Philistines gathered
themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand
horsemen, and people as
the sand which is on
the sea shore in multitude: and
they came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward from Beth-
aven.
Now
the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand
chariots, six thousand
horsemen, and troops as numerous as
the sand on
the seashore.
They went up and camped at
Michmash, east of Beth-
aven.
When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
Seeing that
they were in danger because
their troops were hard-pressed,
the men of Israel
hid in caves and thickets, among
the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.
And some of
the Hebrews went over Jordan to
the land of
Gad and
Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in
Gilgal, and all
the people followed him
trembling.
Some Hebrews even crossed
the Jordan into
the land of
Gad and
Gilead. Saul, however, remained at
Gilgal, and all his troops were
quaking in fear.
And he
tarried seven days, according to
the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to
Gilgal; and
the people were scattered from him.
And Saul waited seven days for
the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to
Gilgal, and
the troops began to desert Saul.
And Saul said, Bring
hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered
the burnt offering.
So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered up the burnt offering.
And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering
the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might
salute him.
Just as he finished offering
the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to
greet him.
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that
the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within
the days appointed, and that
the Philistines gathered
themselves together at
Michmash;
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that
the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at
the appointed time and
the Philistines were gathering at
Michmash,
Therefore said I,
The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not made
supplication unto
the LORD: I forced myself
therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now
the Philistines will descend upon me at
Gilgal, and I have not sought
the favor of
the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer
the burnt offering.”
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept
the commandment of
the LORD thy God, which he commanded
thee: for now would
the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
“You have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept
the command that
the LORD your God gave you; if you had,
the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure;
the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept
the command of
the LORD.”
And Samuel arose, and
gat him up from
Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered
the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
Then Samuel set out from
Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin. And Saul numbered
the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.
And Saul, and
Jonathan his son, and
the people that were present with
them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but
the Philistines
encamped in
Michmash.
Now Saul and
Jonathan his son and
the troops with
them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while
the Philistines camped at
Michmash.
And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
And raiders went out of
the Philistine camp in three divisions. One headed toward Ophrah in
the land of Shual,
And another company turned
the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to
the way of
the border that looketh to
the valley of
Zeboim toward
the wilderness.
another toward Beth-horon, and
the third down
the border road overlooking
the Valley of
Zeboim facing
the wilderness.
Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
And no
blacksmith could be found in all
the land of Israel, because
the Philistines had said, “
The Hebrews must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”
But all
the Israelites went down to
the Philistines, to
sharpen every man his share, and his
coulter, and his
axe, and his
mattock.
Instead, all
the Israelites would go down to
the Philistines to
sharpen their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and sickles.
Yet
they had a
file for
the mattocks, and for
the coulters, and for
the forks, and for
the axes, and to
sharpen the goads.
So it came to pass in
the day of battle, that
there was neither sword nor
spear found in
the hand of any of
the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was
there found.
So on
the day of battle not a sword or
spear could be found in
the hands of
the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
And
the garrison of
the Philistines went out to
the passage of
Michmash.
And a garrison of
the Philistines had gone out to
the pass at
Michmash.
Now it came to pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto
the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to
the Philistines’ garrison, that is on
the other side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to
the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to
the Philistine outpost on
the other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And Saul
tarried in
the uttermost part of Gibeah under a
pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and
the people that were with him were about six hundred men;
Meanwhile, Saul was staying under
the pomegranate tree in Migron on
the outskirts of Gibeah. And
the troops who were with him numbered about six hundred men,
And Ahiah,
the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s brother,
the son of
Phinehas,
the son of
Eli,
the LORD’S priest in
Shiloh, wearing an
ephod. And
the people knew not that
Jonathan was gone.
including
Ahijah, who was wearing an
ephod. He was
the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of
Phinehas,
the son of
Eli the priest of
the LORD in
Shiloh. But
the troops did not know that
Jonathan had left.
And between
the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto
the Philistines’ garrison,
there was a sharp rock on
the one side and a sharp rock on
the other side: and
the name of
the one was Bozez, and
the name of
the other Seneh.
Now
there were cliffs on both sides of
the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach
the Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and
the other Seneh.
One
cliff stood to
the north toward
Michmash, and
the other to
the south toward Geba.
And
Jonathan said to
the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto
the garrison of
these uncircumcised: it may be that
the LORD will work for us: for
there is no restraint to
the LORD to save by many or by few.
Jonathan said to
the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to
the outpost of
these uncircumcised men. Perhaps
the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder
the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”
And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
His
armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go
ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
Then said
Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto
these men, and we will discover ourselves unto
them.
“Very well,” said
Jonathan, “we will cross over toward
these men and show ourselves to
them.
If
they say thus unto us,
Tarry until we come to you;
then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto
them.
If they say, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stay where we are and will not go up to them.
But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”
And both of
them discovered
themselves unto
the garrison of
the Philistines: and
the Philistines said, Behold,
the Hebrews come forth out of
the holes where
they had
hid themselves.
So
the two of
them showed
themselves to
the outpost of
the Philistines, who
exclaimed, “Look,
the Hebrews are coming out of
the holes in which
they were hiding!”
And
the men of
the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for
the LORD hath delivered
them into
the hand of Israel.
So
the men of
the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for
the LORD has delivered
them into
the hand of Israel.”
And
Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and
they fell before
Jonathan; and his armourbearer
slew after him.
So
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his
armor-bearer behind him. And
the Philistines fell before
Jonathan, and his
armor-bearer followed and finished
them off.
And
there was
trembling in
the host, in
the field, and among all
the people:
the garrison, and
the spoilers,
they also
trembled, and
the earth
quaked: so it was a very great
trembling.
Then terror struck
the Philistines in
the camp, in
the field, and among all
the people. Even those in
the outposts and
raiding parties
trembled. Indeed,
the earth
quaked and
panic spread from God.
And
the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold,
the multitude melted away, and
they went on beating down one another.
Now when Saul’s
watchmen at Gibeah in Benjamin looked and saw
the troops melting away and
scattering in every direction,
Then said Saul unto
the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when
they had numbered, behold,
Jonathan and his armourbearer were not
there.
Saul said to
the troops who were with him, “Call
the roll and see who has left us.” And when
they had called
the roll,
they saw that
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer were not
there.
And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring
hither the ark of God. For
the ark of God was at that time with
the children of Israel.
Then Saul said to
Ahijah, “Bring
the ark of God.” (For at that time it was with
the Israelites.)
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to
the priest,
the commotion in
the Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to
the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
And Saul and all
the people that were with him assembled
themselves, and
they came to
the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and
there was a very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to
the battle, and
they found
the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the sword against his
neighbor.
