That these made
war with Bera king of
Sodom, and with Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela, which is Zoar.
went to
war against Bera king of
Sodom, Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela (that is, Zoar).
And
Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
And God came to
Laban the
Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
But that night God came to
Laban the
Aramean in a dream and
warned him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
And
Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast
stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as
captives taken with the sword?
Then
Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have
deceived me and carried off my daughters like
captives of
war!
But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison
warden.
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and
whatsoever they did there, he was the
doer of it.
And the
warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison.
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did not
concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
and imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard, the same prison where Joseph was confined.
And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.
The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he became their personal
attendant. After they had been in
custody for some time,
And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the
ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so
sadly to day?
So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in
custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so
downcast today?”
Pharaoh was
wroth with his servants, and put me in
ward in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief
baker:
Pharaoh was once
angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief
baker in the
custody of the captain of the guard.
And he put them all together into ward three days.
So Joseph imprisoned them for three days,
And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly
protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But Judah replied, “The man solemnly
warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come, let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a
war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest
peradventure the people
repent when they see
war, and they return to Egypt:
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, though it was shorter. For God said, “If the people face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”
The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
The LORD is a
warrior, the LORD is His name.
For he said, Because the LORD hath
sworn that the LORD will have
war with Amalek from generation to generation.
“Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-
ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
Now
listen to me; I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their causes to Him.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to
gaze, and many of them perish.
and the LORD said to him, “Go down and
warn the people not to break through to see the LORD, lest many of them perish.
And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount
Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and
sanctify it.
But Moses said to the LORD, “The people cannot come up Mount
Sinai, for You solemnly
warned us, ‘Put a boundary around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’”
But if the ox were
wont to
push with his horn in time past, and it hath been
testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.
But if the ox has a habit of
goring, and its owner has been
warned yet does not restrain it, and it kills a man or woman, then the ox must be stoned and its owner must also be put to death.
And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they
shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of
war in the camp.
When Joshua heard the sound of the people
shouting, he said to Moses, “The sound of
war is in the camp.”
Whether it be in the
warp, or
woof; of linen, or of woollen; whether in a skin, or in any thing made of skin;
any
weave or
knit of linen or wool, or any article of leather—
And if the plague be
greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, either in the
warp, or in the
woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a plague of
leprosy, and shall be shewed unto the priest:
And he shall look on the plague on the seventh day: if the plague be spread in the garment, either in the
warp, or in the
woof, or in a skin, or in any work that is made of skin; the plague is a
fretting leprosy; it is unclean.
On the seventh day the priest shall reexamine it, and if the
mildew has spread in the
fabric,
weave,
knit, or leather, then regardless of how it is used, it is a
harmful mildew; the article is unclean.
He shall therefore burn that garment, whether
warp or
woof, in woollen or in linen, or any thing of skin, wherein the plague is: for it is a
fretting leprosy; it shall be burnt in the fire.
And if the priest shall look, and, behold, the plague be not spread in the garment, either in the
warp, or in the
woof, or in any thing of skin;
But when the priest reexamines it, if the
mildew has not spread in the
fabric,
weave,
knit, or leather article,
And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be somewhat dark after the washing of it; then he shall
rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the
warp, or out of the
woof:
And if it appear still in the garment, either in the
warp, or in the
woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a spreading plague: thou shalt burn that wherein the plague is with fire.
And the garment, either
warp, or
woof, or
whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean.
If the
mildew disappears from the
fabric,
weave, or
knit, or any leather article after washing, then it is to be washed again, and it will be clean.
This is the law of the plague of
leprosy in a garment of woollen or linen, either in the
warp, or
woof, or any thing of skins, to
pronounce it clean, or to
pronounce it unclean.
And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be shewed them.
They placed him in
custody until the will of the LORD should be made clear to them.
From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

From the sons of
Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
Of the children of

Issachar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
Of the children of
Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to
war;
From the sons of
Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
From the sons of Joseph:
Of the children of
Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to

And from the sons of

war;
From the sons of
Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
Of the children of
Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to
war;
From the sons of
Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;
So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
And if ye go to
war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an
alarm with the
trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.
When you enter into battle in your land against an
adversary who attacks you, sound short blasts on the
trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God and saved from your enemies.
And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
and because it had not been declared what should be done to him, they placed him in
custody.
And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.
And he
warned the congregation, “Move away now from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”
Wherefore it is said in the book of the
wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the
brooks of
Arnon,
Therefore it is stated in the Book of the
Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah and the wadis of the
Arnon,
And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will
advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me
warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.”
Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers’ house, all that are able to go to war in Israel.
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
And the earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed them up together with
Korah, when that company died, what time the fire
devoured two hundred and fifty men: and they became a sign.
And the earth opened its mouth and
swallowed them along with
Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a
warning sign.
And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of
yourselves unto the
war, and let them go against the Midianites, and
avenge the LORD of
Midian.
So Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for
war, that they may go against the Midianites and
execute the LORD’s
vengeance on them.
Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”
So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
So a thousand men were
recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand armed for
war.
And Moses sent them to the
war, a thousand of every tribe, them and
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, to the
war, with the holy instruments, and the
trumpets to blow in his hand.
And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the
trumpets for signaling.
And they
warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they
slew all the males.
Then they
waged war against
Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.
And
Eleazar the priest said unto the men of
war which went to the battle, This is the
ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;
Then
Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:
And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
Then divide the
captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.
And
levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of
war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the
beeves, and of the
asses, and of the sheep:
Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle,
donkeys, or sheep.
And the
booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of
war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,
and this
plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000 sheep,
And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:
This was the half portion for those who had gone to war:
And of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided from the men that
warred,
From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,
And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.
(For the men of
war had taken
spoil, every man for himself.)
Each of the soldiers had taken
plunder for himself.
And Moses said unto the children of
Gad and to the children of
Reuben, Shall your brethren go to
war, and shall ye sit here?
But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,
Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will arm
yourselves before the LORD for battle,
But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.
But your servants are
equipped for
war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have
sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had
girded on every man his weapons of
war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
“We have
sinned against the LORD,” you replied. “We will go up and fight, as the LORD our God has commanded us.” Then each of you put on his weapons of
war, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.
And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to
war, for I will not give you any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the
brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of
war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD
sware unto them.
The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the
Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had
sworn to them.
So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over, armed for battle,
ahead of your brothers, the Israelites.
Or hath God
assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by
war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to
war against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make
war against thee, then thou shalt
besiege it:
But if they refuse to make peace with you and
wage war against you, lay siege to that city.
When thou shalt
besiege a city a long time, in making
war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an
axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:
When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an
axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should
besiege them?
Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit. Use them to build siege works against the city that is
waging war against you, until it falls.
When thou goest forth to
war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them
captive,
When you go to
war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hand and you take them
captive,
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to
war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall
cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
If a man is newly married, he must not be sent to war or be pressed into any duty. For one year he is free to stay at home and bring joy to the wife he has married.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime
warrants.
About forty thousand prepared for
war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of
Jericho.
About 40,000 troops armed for battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of
Jericho.
And this is the cause why Joshua did
circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of
war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Now this is why Joshua
circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of
war—had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of
war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD
sware that he would not
shew them the land, which the LORD
sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
For the Israelites had
wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of
war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD
vowed never to let them see the land He had
sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of
war with thee, and arise, go up to
Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of
Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack
Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of
Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of
war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
And all the people, even the people of
war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one
accord.
they came together to
wage war against Joshua and Israel.
This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is
mouldy:
This bread of ours was
warm when we
packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and
moldy.
Therefore the five kings of the
Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, the king of
Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and
encamped before
Gibeon, and made
war against it.
So the five kings of the
Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped before
Gibeon and made
war against it.
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the people of
war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
So Joshua came, and all the people of
war with him, against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Joshua
waged war against all these kings for a long period of time.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
still as strong
today as I was the day Moses sent me out. As my strength was then, so it is now for
war, for going out, and for coming in.
And the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from
war.
(
Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the greatest man among the
Anakim.) Then the land had rest from
war.
