And
Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this
wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt;
whereon if a man
lean, it will go into his hand, and
pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
Look now, you are trusting in Egypt, that
splintered reed of a staff that will
pierce the hand of
anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
Where are the gods of
Hamath and Arphad?
where are the gods of
Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
Where are the gods of
Hamath and Arpad?
Where are the gods of
Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of
Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard:
wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that is left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard,
wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a
rumor and return to his own land,
where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
Where is the king of
Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of
Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto
Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel,
Whereas thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of Assyria:
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to Me concerning
Sennacherib king of Assyria,
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “
Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?” “They came to me from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
so that all may know, from where the sun rises to where it sets, that there is none but Me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy
sorceries,
wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
So take your stand with your spells and with your many
sorceries, with which you have
wearied yourself from your youth. Perhaps you will succeed; perhaps you will
inspire terror!
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath
begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am
desolate, a
captive, and removing to and
fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these,
where had they been?
Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has
begotten these for me? I was
bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. So who has reared them? Look, I was left all alone, so
where did they come from?’”
Thus saith the LORD,
Where is the bill of your mother’s
divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
This is what the LORD says: “
Where is your mother’s
certificate of
divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your
iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand
shortened at all, that it cannot
redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my
rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for
thirst.
Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer when I called? Is My hand too short to
redeem you? Or do I lack the strength to deliver you? Behold, My
rebuke dries up the sea; I turn the rivers into a desert; the fish
rot for lack of water and die of
thirst.
And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the
fury of the
oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and
where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
But you have forgotten the LORD, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. You live in terror all day long because of the
fury of the
oppressor who is bent on destruction. But
where is the
fury of the
oppressor?
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall
prosper in the thing
whereto I sent it.
so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will
accomplish what I please, and it will
prosper where I send it.
Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy
remembrance: for thou hast discovered
thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed
where thou sawest it.
Behind the door and
doorpost you have set up your
memorial.
Forsaking Me, you uncovered your bed; you
climbed up and opened it wide. And you have made a
pact with those whose bed you have loved; you have
gazed upon their nakedness.
Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not?
wherefore have we
afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
“Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you
oppress all your workers.
So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
So shall they fear the name of the LORD
where the sun sets, and His glory
where it rises. For He will come like a
raging flood, driven by the breath of the LORD.
Whereas thou hast been
forsaken and
hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal
excellency, a joy of many generations.
Wherefore art thou red in thine
apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying,
Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the
shepherd of his flock?
where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses.
Where is He who brought them through the sea with the
shepherds of His flock?
Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them,
Look down from heaven, and behold from the
habitation of thy
holiness and of thy glory:
where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy
bowels and of thy
mercies toward me? are they restrained?
Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious
habitation.
Where are Your zeal and might? Your
yearning and
compassion for me are restrained.
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
Our holy and beautiful temple,
where our fathers praised You, has been burned with fire, and all that was
dear to us lies in ruins.
Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.
I will
destine you for the sword, and you will all
kneel down to be slaughtered, because I called and you did not answer, I spoke and you did not
listen; you did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did not delight.”
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my
footstool:
where is the house that ye build unto me? and
where is the place of my rest?
This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My
footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me? Or
where will My place of
repose be?
Neither said they,
Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of
drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and
where no man dwelt?
They did not ask, ‘
Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and pits, a land of
drought and darkness, a land
where no one travels and no one lives?’
The priests said not,
Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also
transgressed against me, and the prophets
prophesied by
Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
The priests did not ask, ‘
Where is the LORD?’ The experts in the law no longer knew Me, and the leaders rebelled against Me. The prophets
prophesied by
Baal and followed useless idols.
Wherefore I will yet
plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I
plead.
Therefore, I will
contend with you again, declares the LORD, and I will bring a case against your children’s children.
But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
But
where are the gods you made for
yourselves? Let them rise up in your time of trouble and save you if they can; for your gods are as numerous as your cities, O Judah.
Wherefore will ye
plead with me? ye all have
transgressed against me, saith the LORD.
Why do you bring a case against Me? You have all rebelled against Me,” declares the LORD.
O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
You people of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: “Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of dense darkness? Why do My people say, ‘We are free to
roam; we will come to You no more’?
Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see
where thou hast not been
lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast
polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
“Lift up your eyes to the barren heights and see. Is there any place
where you have not been
violated? You sat beside the
highways waiting for your lovers, like a
nomad in the desert. You have
defiled the land with your
prostitution and wickedness.
And I saw, when for all the causes
whereby backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce; yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave her a
certificate of
divorce and sent her away. Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly
deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace;
whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
Then I said, “
Ah, Lord GOD, how completely You have
deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ while a sword is at our throats.”
Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall
slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall
spoil them, a
leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be
torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down, a wolf from the desert will
ravage them. A
leopard will lie in wait near their cities, and
everyone who ventures out will be
torn to pieces. For their
rebellious acts are many, and their unfaithful deeds are numerous.
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall
devour them.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says: “Because you have spoken this word, I will make My words a fire in your mouth and this people the wood it consumes.
And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall
impoverish thy
fenced cities,
wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
They will
devour your harvest and food; they will
consume your sons and daughters; they will eat up your flocks and herds; they will feed on your vines and fig trees. With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust.”
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say,
Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have
forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
And when the people ask, ‘For what
offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have
forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve foreigners in a land that is not your own.’”
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
But go ye now unto my place which was in
Shiloh,
where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.
But go now to the place in
Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for My Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.
Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name,
wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to
Shiloh.
therefore what I did to
Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears My Name, the house in which you trust, the place that I gave to you and your fathers.
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places
whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
And
wherever I have banished them, the
remnant of this evil family will choose death over life,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I
plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments:
Wherefore doth the way of the wicked
prosper?
wherefore are all they happy that deal very
treacherously?
Righteous are You, O LORD, when I
plead before You. Yet about Your judgments I wish to
contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked
prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?
If thou hast run with the
footmen, and they have
wearied thee, then how canst thou
contend with horses? and if in the land of peace,
wherein thou trustedst, they
wearied thee, then how
wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
“If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you
compete with horses? If you
stumble in a peaceful land, how will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?
Then I went to Euphrates, and
digged, and took the
girdle from the place
where I had
hid it: and, behold, the
girdle was
marred, it was profitable for nothing.
So I went to Perath and
dug up the loincloth, and I took it from the place
where I had hidden it. But now it was ruined—of no use at all.
Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?
Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?
And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.
And if you ask
yourself, “Why has this happened to me?” It is because of the magnitude of your iniquity that your skirts have been
stripped off and your body has been exposed.
And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee,
Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.
If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for famine, to famine; and those destined for captivity, to captivity.’
For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of
mourning, neither go to
lament nor
bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and
mercies.
Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Do not enter a house
where there is a funeral meal. Do not go to
mourn or show sympathy, for I have removed from this people My peace, My loving devotion, and My
compassion,” declares the LORD.
Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.
You must not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down with them to eat and drink.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt
shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee,
Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?
When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great
disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night;
where I will not
shew you favour.
So I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of
affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things
wherein there is no profit.
O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
For he shall be like the
heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the
parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.
He will be like a
shrub in the desert; he will not see when prosperity comes. He will dwell in the
parched places of the desert, in a salt land
where no one lives.
Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the LORD? let it come now.
Behold, they keep saying to me, “Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come now!”
Thus said the LORD unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;
This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and stand at the gate of the people, through which the kings of Judah go in and out; and stand at all the other gates of Jerusalem.
If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will
repent of the good,
wherewith I said I would benefit them.
and if it does evil in My sight and does not
listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness,
wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall
straiten them.
I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
Then came Jeremiah from
Tophet,
whither the LORD had sent him to
prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’S house; and said to all the people,
Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth,
where the LORD had sent him to
prophesy, and he stood in the
courtyard of the house of the LORD and proclaimed to all the people,
Cursed be the day
wherein I was born: let not the day
wherein my mother bare me be blessed.
Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.
Wherefore came I forth out of the
womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
Why did I come out of the
womb to see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,
wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which
besiege you without the walls, and I will
assemble them into the midst of this city.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the wall, and I will
assemble their forces in the center of this city.
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
And many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’
And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
I will
hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another land,
where neither of you were born—and there you both will die.
But to the land
whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.
You will never return to the land for which you long.”
Is this man Coniah a
despised broken
idol? is he a vessel
wherein is no pleasure?
wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?
Is this man Coniah a
despised and
shattered pot, a
jar that no one wants? Why are he and his descendants
hurled out and cast into a land they do not know?
And I will gather the
remnant of my flock out of all countries
whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
Then I Myself will gather the
remnant of My flock from all the lands to which I have banished them, and I will return them to their pasture,
where they will be fruitful and multiply.
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
Wherefore their way shall be unto them as
slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their
visitation, saith the LORD.
“Therefore their path will become
slick; they will be driven away into the darkness and fall into it. For I will bring
disaster upon them in the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
“Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.
And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their
hurt, to be a reproach and a
proverb, a
taunt and a
curse, in all places
whither I shall drive them.
Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live:
wherefore should this city be laid waste?
Do not
listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live! Why should this city become a ruin?
Ask ye now, and see whether a man
doth travail with child?
wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in
travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?
Ask now, and see: Can a male give birth? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale?
They shall come with
weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way,
wherein they shall not
stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my
firstborn.
They will come with
weeping, and by their
supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path
where they will not
stumble. For I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My
firstborn.”
For
Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying,
Wherefore dost thou
prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
For
Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying: “Why are you
prophesying like this? You claim that the LORD says, ‘Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
And he shall lead
Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not
prosper?
He will take
Zedekiah to Babylon,
where he will stay until I attend to him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.’”
And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city,
whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence;
Now therefore, about this city of which you say, ‘It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword and famine and plague,’ this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
And fields shall be bought in this land,
whereof ye say, It is
desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
And fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying, ‘It is a
desolation, without man or beast; it has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.’
And I will
cleanse them from all the iniquity they have committed against Me, and will
forgive all their sins of rebellion against Me.
In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name
wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.
In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely, and this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
But ye turned and
polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his
handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
But now you have changed your minds and
profaned My name. Each of you has taken back the menservants and maidservants whom you had set at liberty to go
wherever they wanted, and you have again forced them to be your slaves.
Neither shall ye build house, nor
sow seed, nor plant
vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land
where ye be strangers.
Nor are you ever to build a house or
sow seed or plant a
vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land
where you
wander.’
Then he went down into the king’s house, into the
scribe’s chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the
scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and
Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
he went down to the
scribe’s chamber in the king’s palace,
where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the
scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan,
Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto
Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll
wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So
Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.
Then all the officials sent word to
Baruch through Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, saying, “Bring the
scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come here.” So
Baruch son of Neriah took the
scroll and went to them.
Then said the princes unto
Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know
where ye be.
Then the officials said to
Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must hide
yourselves and tell no one
where you are.”
Wherefore the princes were
wroth with Jeremiah, and
smote him, and put him in prison in the house of
Jonathan the
scribe: for they had made that the prison.
The officials were
angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him and placed him in
jail in the house of
Jonathan the
scribe, for it had been made into a prison.
Then
Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
Later, King
Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him in his palace,
where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” “There is,” Jeremiah replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
Where are now your prophets which
prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
Where are your prophets who
prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land’?
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the
dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place
where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the
cistern,
where he will
starve to death, for there is no more bread in the city.”
But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them, and overtook
Zedekiah in the plains of
Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of
Hamath,
where he gave judgment upon him.
But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook
Zedekiah in the plains of
Jericho. They seized him and brought him up to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of
Hamath,
where he pronounced judgment on him.
And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon,
forbear: behold, all the land is before thee:
whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.
But now, behold, I am freeing you
today from the chains that were on your wrists. If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther. Look, the whole land is before you.
Wherever it seems good and right to you, go there.”
Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in
Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will
slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it:
wherefore should he
slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the
remnant in Judah perish?
Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at
Mizpah. “Let me go and kill
Ishmael son of Nethaniah,” he said. “No one will know it. Why should he take your life and
scatter all the people of Judah who have gathered to you, so that the
remnant of Judah would perish?”
Now the pit
wherein Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which
Asa the king had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain.
Now the
cistern into which
Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was a large one that King
Asa had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
That the LORD thy God may
shew us the way
wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.
Pray that the LORD your God will tell us the way we should walk and the thing we should do.”
Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt,
where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the
trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine,
whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.
then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you
dread will follow on your heels into Egypt, and you will die there.
Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence, in the place
whither ye desire to go and to
sojourn.
Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”
