Wherefore I
abhor myself, and
repent in dust and ashes.
Therefore I retract my words, and I
repent in dust and ashes.”
Wherefore doth the wicked
contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou
wilt not require it.
Why has the wicked man
renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call me to account.”
There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Without speech or language, without a sound to be heard,
LORD, I have loved the
habitation of thy house, and the place
where thine honour dwelleth.
O LORD, I love the house where You dwell, the place where Your glory resides.
An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
“A
vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from
where he lies!”
My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
Like the
crushing of my bones, my enemies
taunt me, while they say to me all day long, “
Where is your God?”
O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy mountain, and to the place where You dwell.
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our
affliction and our oppression?
Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.
Your arrows
pierce the hearts of the king’s foes; the nations fall beneath your feet.
All thy garments smell of
myrrh, and
aloes, and
cassia, out of the ivory palaces,
whereby they have made thee
glad.
There is a river, the streams
whereof shall make
glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
Why should I fear in times of trouble, when wicked usurpers
surround me?
The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and
summons the earth from
where the sun rises to
where it sets.
There were they in great fear,
where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath
despised them.
There they are,
overwhelmed with
dread,
where there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has
despised them.
They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have
digged a pit before me, into the midst
whereof they are fallen themselves.
Selah.
They spread a net for my feet; my soul was
despondent. They
dug a pit before me, but they themselves have fallen into it!
Selah O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and
thirsty land,
where no water is;
O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and
weary land without water.
You sent abundant rain, O God; You refreshed Your
weary inheritance.
Why
leap ye, ye high hills? this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in;
yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.
Why do you
gaze in
envy, O mountains of many peaks? This is the mountain God chose for His dwelling,
where the LORD will surely dwell
forever.
I sink in deep
mire,
where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters,
where the floods overflow me.
I have sunk into the
miry depths,
where there is no footing; I have drifted into deep waters,
where the flood engulfs me.
Be thou my strong
habitation,
whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
Be my rock of refuge, where I can always go. Give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount
Zion,
wherein thou hast dwelt.
Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount
Zion where You dwell.
They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
They said in their hearts, “We will
crush them completely.” They burned down every place
where God met us in the land.
Wherefore should the heathen say,
Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the
revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.
Why should the nations ask, “
Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations Your
vengeance for the
bloodshed of Your servants.
And render unto our neighbours
sevenfold into their
bosom their reproach,
wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
Pay back into the laps of our neighbors
sevenfold the reproach they
hurled at You, O Lord.
This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language:
Yea, the
sparrow hath found an house, and the
swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
Even the
sparrow has found a home, and the
swallow a nest for herself,
where she places her young near Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?
Remember the briefness of my lifespan! For what
futility You have created all men!
Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
Where, O Lord, is Your loving devotion of old, which You faithfully
swore to David?
Make us
glad according to the days
wherein thou hast
afflicted us, and the years
wherein we have seen evil.
Make us
glad for as many days as You have
afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength,
wherewith he hath
girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
The LORD reigns! He is
robed in majesty; the LORD has clothed and armed Himself with strength. The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
When your fathers
tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
where your fathers tested and tried Me, though they had seen My work.
Where the birds make their nests: as for the
stork, the
fir trees are her house.
where the birds build their nests; the
stork makes her home in the
cypresses.
Thou makest darkness, and it is night:
wherein all the beasts of the forest do
creep forth.
You bring darkness, and it becomes night, when all the beasts of the forest
prowl.
So is this great and wide sea,
wherein are things
creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
Here is the sea, vast and wide,
teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both great and small.
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of
habitation.
He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to
wander in the wilderness,
where there is no way.
He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them
wander in a
trackless wasteland.
Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a
girdle wherewith he is
girded continually.
From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised.
From where the sun rises to where it sets, the name of the LORD is praised.
Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word.
So shall I have
wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.
Then I can answer him who taunts, for I trust in Your word.
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give
thanks unto the name of the LORD.
where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, as a testimony for Israel, to give
thanks to the name of the LORD.
The LORD hath done great things for us;
whereof we are
glad.
The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.
unable to fill the hands of the
reaper, or the arms of the binder of
sheaves.
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?
Where can I
flee from Your presence?
When my spirit was
overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way
wherein I walked have they
privily laid a
snare for me.
Although my spirit grows
faint within me, You know my way. Along the path I travel they have hidden a
snare for me.
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
How
futile it is to spread the net
where any bird can see it!
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors comes
deliverance.
Where no oxen are, the
crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
Where there are no oxen, the
manger is empty, but an abundant harvest comes through the strength of the ox.
Better a
dish of vegetables
where there is love than a
fattened ox with hatred.
A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it:
whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
A
bribe is a charm to its giver;
wherever he turns, he succeeds.
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a
fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
Why should the
fool have money in his hand with no intention of
buying wisdom?
The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it
whithersoever he will.
The king’s heart is a
waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it
where He pleases.
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so
where there is no
talebearer, the
strife ceaseth.
Without wood, a fire goes out; without
gossip, a conflict ceases.
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the Law.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Her husband is known at the city gate, where he sits among the elders of the land.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The sun rises and the sun sets; it
hurries back to
where it rises.
Is there any thing
whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
I made gardens and parks for myself, where I planted all kinds of fruit trees.
And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour
wherein I have laboured, and
wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the
vexation of his heart,
wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
For what does a man get for all the
toil and
striving with which he labors under the sun?
What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
What does the worker gain from his
toil?
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should
rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
So I
admired the dead, who had already died, above the living, who are still alive.
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
For the youth has come from the prison to the
kingship, though he was born poor in his own kingdom.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error:
wherefore should God be
angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not tell the
messenger that your
vow was a mistake. Why should God be
angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?
Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
For the king’s word is supreme, and who can say to him, “What are you doing?”
All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time
wherein one man ruleth over another to his own
hurt.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to every deed that is done under the sun; there is a time when one man lords it over another to his own
detriment.
And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
Then too, I saw the burial of the wicked who used to go in and out of the holy place, and they were praised in the city
where they had done so. This too is
futile.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor
device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave,
whither thou goest.
Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in
Sheol,
where you are going, there is no work or
planning or knowledge or wisdom.
If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
If the clouds are full, they will pour out rain upon the earth; whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth,
where thou feedest,
where thou makest thy flock to rest at
noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
Tell me, O one I love,
where do you pasture your sheep?
Where do you rest them at
midday? Why should I be like a
veiled woman beside the flocks of your companions?
Go forth, O ye daughters of
Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown
wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his
espousals, and in the day of the
gladness of his heart.
Come out, O daughters of
Zion, and
gaze at King Solomon, wearing the crown his mother bestowed on the day of his
wedding— the day of his heart’s
rejoicing.
Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even
shorn, which came up from the washing;
whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
Your teeth are like a flock of newly
shorn sheep coming up from the washing; each has its
twin, and not one of them is lost.
Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury,
whereon there
hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Your neck is like the tower of David, built with rows of stones; on it
hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors.
Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women?
whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
Where has your beloved gone, O most beautiful among women? Which way has he turned? We will seek him with you.
Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing,
whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep coming up from the washing; each has its
twin, and not one of them is lost.
Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
Put no more trust in man, who has only the breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?
What could have been done more to my
vineyard, that I have not done in it?
wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
What more could I have done for My
vineyard than I already did for it? Why, when I expected sweet grapes, did it bring forth
sour fruit?
And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, only briers and thorns will be found.
And what will ye do in the day of
visitation, and in the
desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye
flee for help? and
where will ye leave your glory?
What will you do on the day of
reckoning when
devastation comes from
afar? To whom will you
flee for help?
Where will you leave your wealth?
Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount
Zion and on Jerusalem, I will
punish the fruit of the
stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
So when the Lord has completed all His work against Mount
Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will
punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of his
arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes.
And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard
bondage wherein thou
wast made to serve,
On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and
torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded
Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.
What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded
Zion,
where His
afflicted people will find refuge.”
Wherefore my
bowels shall sound like an
harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-haresh.
Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a
harp, my inmost being for Kir-heres.
Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
Where are your wise men now? Let them tell you and
reveal what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against Egypt.
Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.
Therefore
glorify the LORD in the east.
Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the sea.
To whom he said, This is the rest
wherewith ye may cause the
weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
to whom He has said: “This is the place of rest, let the
weary rest; this is the place of
repose.” But they would not
listen.
Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye
scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
Therefore hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
Woe to
Ariel, to
Ariel, the city
where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.
Woe to you, O
Ariel, the city of
Ariel where David camped! Year upon year let your festivals
recur.
Wherefore the Lord said,
Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the
precept of men:
Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye
despise this word, and trust in oppression and
perverseness, and stay
thereon:
Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says: “Because you have rejected this message, trusting in oppression and relying on
deceit,
And in every place
where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of
shaking will he fight with it.
And with every stroke of the rod of punishment that the LORD brings down on them, the tambourines and lyres will sound as He battles with weapons
brandished.
Thine heart shall
meditate terror.
Where is the
scribe?
where is the receiver?
where is he that counted the towers?
Your mind will
ponder the former terror: “
Where is he who
tallies?
Where is he who weighs?
Where is he who counts the towers?”
But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams;
wherein shall go no
galley with oars, neither shall
gallant ship pass thereby.
But there the
Majestic One, our LORD, will be for us a place of rivers and wide canals,
where no
galley with oars will row, and no
majestic vessel will pass.
The
parched ground will become a
pool, the
thirsty land springs of water. In the
haunt where jackals once lay, there will be grass and reeds and
papyrus.
