O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.
Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
Therefore I
will not
refrain my mouth; I
will speak in the
anguish of my spirit; I
will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Therefore I
will not restrain my mouth; I
will speak in the
anguish of my spirit; I
will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my
couch shall ease my
complaint;
When I think my bed
will comfort me and my
couch will ease my
complaint,
Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to
swallow my
spittle?
And why
dost thou not
pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
Why do You not
pardon my
transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I
will lie down in the dust; You
will seek me, but I
will be no more.”
How long
wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
“How long
will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a
blustering wind.
If thou
wert pure and upright; surely now he would
awake for thee, and make the
habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
if you are pure and upright, even now He
will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.
Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days
will flourish.
Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
Will they not teach you and tell you, and speak from their understanding?
So are the paths of all that
forget God; and the
hypocrite’s hope shall perish:
Such is the
destiny of all who
forget God; so the hope of the godless
will perish.
If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.
Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
He
will yet fill your mouth with
laughter, and your lips with a
shout of joy.
They that
hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to
nought.
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
If he
will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If one wished to
contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who
dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’
If God
will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do
stoop under him.
God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of
Rahab cower beneath Him.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
He does not let me catch my breath, but overwhelms me with bitterness.
When the
scourge brings sudden death, He mocks the
despair of the innocent.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou
wilt not hold me innocent.
I would still
dread all my sufferings; I know that You
will not
acquit me.
Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear
terrify me:
Let Him remove His rod from me, so that His terror
will no longer
frighten me.
My soul is
weary of my life; I
will leave my
complaint upon myself; I
will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
“I
loathe my own life; I
will express my
complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul.
I
will say unto God, Do not
condemn me;
shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
If I be wicked,
woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet
will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine
affliction;
If I am guilty,
woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my
affliction.
Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee
ashamed?
For he knoweth vain men: he
seeth wickedness also;
will he not then consider it?
Surely He knows the
deceit of men. If He sees iniquity, does He not take note?
For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot;
yea, thou shalt be
stedfast, and shalt not fear:
then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid.
Because thou shalt
forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
For you
will forget your misery, recalling it only as waters gone by.
And thine age shall be clearer than the
noonday; thou shalt
shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
Your life
will be brighter than
noonday; its darkness
will be like the morning.
And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope;
yea, thou shalt
dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety.
Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
But the eyes of the wicked
will fail, and escape
will elude them; they
will hope for their last breath.”
No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
“Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die!
But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
But ask the animals, and they
will instruct you; ask the birds of the air, and they
will tell you.
Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; let the fish of the sea inform you.
Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk
deceitfully for him?
Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf or speak
deceitfully for Him?
Will ye accept his person?
will ye
contend for God?
He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.
Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
Be silent, and I will speak. Then let come to me what may.
Though he
slay me, yet
will I trust in him: but I
will maintain mine own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I
will hope in Him. I
will still defend my ways to His face.
He also shall be my salvation: for an
hypocrite shall not come before him.
Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before Him.
Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.
Behold, now that I have prepared my case, I know that I
will be
vindicated.
Who is he that
will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.
Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.
Only grant these two things to me, so that I need not hide from You:
Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.
Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply.
And
dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it
will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof
will not cease.
For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it
will sprout again, and its tender shoots
will not fail.
Yet through the
scent of water it
will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not
awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he
will not be
awakened or
roused from sleep.
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
When a man dies,
will he live again? All the days of my hard service I
will wait, until my
renewal comes.
Thou shalt call, and I
will answer thee: thou
wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
You will call, and I will answer; You will desire the work of Your hands.
I
will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I
will declare;
Listen to me and I
will inform you. I
will describe what I have seen,
And he dwelleth in
desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
he
will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned houses destined to become
rubble.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he
prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
He
will no longer be rich; his wealth
will not
endure. His possessions
will not overspread the land.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
Let not him that is
deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
It
will be paid in full before his time, and his branch
will not
flourish.
He shall
shake off his unripe
grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
He
will be like a vine
stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.
For the company of the godless
will be barren, and fire
will consume the tents of
bribery.
Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I
forbear, what am I eased?
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away?
When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.
For when only a few years are past I will go the way of no return.
Lay down now, put me in a
surety with thee; who is he that
will strike hands with me?
For thou hast
hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not
exalt them.
You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore You
will not
exalt them.
He that speaketh
flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.
If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail.
But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.
But come back and try again, all of you. For I will not find a wise man among you.
They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
Will it go down to the gates of
Sheol?
Will we go down together into the dust?”
How long
will it be
ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we
will speak.
“How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.
How long
will ye
vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
If indeed you would
exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me,
Why do ye
persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
Why do you
persecute me as God does?
Will you never get enough of my flesh?
For I know that my
redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
But I know that my
Redeemer lives, and in the end He
will stand upon the earth.
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my
reins be consumed within me.
I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!
Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
he
will perish
forever, like his own dung; those who had seen him
will ask, ‘Where is he?’
He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found:
yea, he shall be
chased away as a vision of the night.
He
will fly away like a dream, never to be found; he
will be
chased away like a vision in the night.
The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.
The eye that saw him will see him no more, and his place will no longer behold him.

vigor that fills his bones
will lie down with him in the dust.

swallowed down riches, and he shall
vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his
belly.
He
swallows wealth but vomits it out; God
will force it from his stomach.

suck the poison of asps: the
viper’s tongue shall
slay him.
He
will suck the poison of cobras; the fangs of a
viper will kill him.

brooks of honey and butter.
He
will not enjoy the streams, the rivers flowing with honey and
cream.

consume; thus his prosperity
will not
endure.

fulness of his
sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.

plenty, he
will be distressed; the full force of misery
will come upon him.
When he is about to fill his
belly, God shall cast the
fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.
When he has filled his stomach, God
will vent His
fury upon him, raining it down on him as he eats.
He shall
flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.
All darkness shall be
hid in his secret places: a fire not
blown shall
consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.
Total darkness is reserved for his treasures. A fire unfanned
will consume him and
devour what is left in his tent.
The heaven shall
reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
The heavens
will expose his iniquity, and the earth
will rise up against him.

The possessions of his house will be removed, flowing away on the day of God’s wrath.

trodden?

trod?

thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
Reconcile now and be at peace with Him; thereby good
will come to you.
If thou return to the
Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
If you return to the
Almighty, you
will be restored. If you remove injustice from your tents
then the
Almighty will be your gold and the finest silver for you.
For then shalt thou have thy delight in the
Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
Surely then you
will delight in the
Almighty and lift up your face to God.
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
You
will pray to Him, and He
will hear you, and you
will fulfill your vows.
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall
shine upon thy ways.
Your decisions
will be carried out, and light
will shine on your ways.
