And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of
Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king’s matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal
courageously, and the LORD shall be with the good.
Note that Amariah, the chief priest,
will be over you in all that pertains to the LORD, and Zebadiah son of
Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all that pertains to the king. And the Levites
will serve as officers before you. Act
resolutely; may the LORD be with the upright!”
If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or
pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our
affliction, then thou
wilt hear and help.
‘If
disaster comes upon us—whether sword or judgment, plague or famine—we
will stand before this temple and before You, for Your Name is in this temple. We
will cry out to You in our distress, and You
will hear us and save us.’
O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
To
morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the
cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the
brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You
will see them coming up the
Ascent of Ziz, and you
will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel.
Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set
yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to
morrow go out against them: for the LORD
will be with you.
You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them
tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’”
And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth,
Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye
prosper.
Early in the morning they got up and left for the Wilderness of Tekoa. As they set out,
Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, and you
will be
upheld; believe in His prophets, and you
will succeed.”
Behold, with a great plague
will the LORD
smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:
So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a serious blow.
And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy
bowels, until thy
bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
And day after day you
yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your
bowels, until it causes your
bowels to come out.’”
But if thou
wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Even if you go and fight
bravely in battle, God
will make you
stumble before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore
will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I
will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us.
Then
Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated
yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and
thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.
Then
Hezekiah said, “Now that you have consecrated
yourselves to the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and
thank offerings to the house of the LORD.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and
thank offerings, and all whose hearts were
willing brought burnt offerings.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he
will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
Now do not
stiffen your necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that His fierce anger
will turn away from you.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and
will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons
will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and
will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He
will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
Is not
Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and
thirst when he says, ‘The LORD our God
will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria?’
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less
will your God deliver you from my hand!”
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
Also he built altars in the house of the LORD,
whereof the LORD had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.
Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “My Name
will remain in Jerusalem
forever.”
And he set a carved image, the
idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel,
will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved image he had made and set it up in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I
will establish My Name
forever.
Neither
will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they
will take
heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath
will be poured out upon this place and
will not be
quenched.’
Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
‘Now I
will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you
will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes
will not see all the
calamity that I
will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
And his princes gave
willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and
Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the
passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
His officials also contributed
willingly to the people and priests and Levites. Hilkiah,
Zechariah, and Jehiel, the administrators of the house of God, gave the priests 2,600
Passover offerings and 300 bulls.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He
will destroy you!”
And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
And all their neighbors supported them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and
livestock, and with valuables, in addition to all their
freewill offerings.
And afterward offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of the LORD that were consecrated, and of every one that
willingly offered a
freewill offering unto the LORD.
After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings and those for New Moons and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as all the
freewill offerings brought to the LORD.
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together
will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then
will they not pay
toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt
endamage the revenue of the kings.
Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, they
will not pay tribute, duty, or
toll, and the royal treasury
will suffer.
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you
will discover and
verify that the city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.
We
certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
We
advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, you
will have no dominion west of the Euphrates.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
Now, therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree what you must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work
will not be hindered.
That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.
Then they
will be able to offer sacrifices of a sweet
aroma to the God of heaven and to pray for the lives of the king and his sons.
And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the
freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering
willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:
together with all the silver and gold you may find in all the province of Babylon, as well as the
freewill offerings of the people and priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem.
And
whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the
will of your God.
You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God.
And
whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to
banishment, or to
confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
If
anyone does not keep the law of your God and the law of the king, let a strict judgment be executed against him, whether death,
banishment,
confiscation of property, or imprisonment.
Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.
Get up, for this matter is your
responsibility, and we
will support you. Be strong and take action!”
Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate
yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
Now, therefore, make a confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His
will. Separate
yourselves from the people of the land and from your foreign wives.”
Remember, I
beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye
transgress, I
will scatter you abroad among the nations:
Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses when You said, ‘If you are unfaithful, I
will scatter you among the nations,
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet
will I gather them from thence, and
will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I
will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when
wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time.
Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may letters be given to me for the governors west of the Euphrates, so that they will grant me safe passage until I reach Judah.
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he
will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I
will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
But when
Sanballat the Horonite,
Tobiah the
Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about this, they
mocked us and
ridiculed us, saying, “What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he
will prosper us; therefore we his servants
will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor
memorial, in Jerusalem.
So I answered them and said, “The God of heaven is the One who will grant us success. We, His servants, will start rebuilding, but you have no portion, right, or claim in Jerusalem.”
And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews?
will they
fortify themselves?
will they sacrifice?
will they make an end in a day?
will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves?
Will they offer sacrifices?
Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much
rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much
rubble that we
will never be able to rebuild the wall.”
And our
adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and
slay them, and cause the work to cease.
And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
Wherever you hear the sound of the horn,
rally to us there. Our God
will fight for us!”
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
“We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors
will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be
weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God,
strengthen my hands.
For they were all trying to
frighten us, saying, “Their hands
will be
weakened in the work, and it
will never be finished.” But now, my God,
strengthen my hands.
Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they
will come to
slay thee;
yea, in the night
will they come to
slay thee.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
And I said, Should such a man as I
flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I
will not go in.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man
will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:
We will not give our daughters in marriage to the people of the land, and we will not take their daughters for our sons.
And if the people of the land bring ware or any
victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not
buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the
exaction of every debt.
When the people of the land bring
merchandise or any kind of grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we
will not
buy from them on a Sabbath or holy day. Every seventh year we
will let the fields lie
fallow, and
will cancel every debt.
And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD:
We will also bring the firstfruits of our land and of every fruit tree to the house of the LORD year by year.
Also the
firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:
And we
will bring the
firstborn of our sons and our
livestock, as it is written in the Law, and
will bring the
firstborn of our herds and flocks to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we
will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the
porters, and the singers: and we
will not
forsake the house of our God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
And the people blessed all the men, that willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem.
And the people blessed all the men who
volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I
will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I
will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.
For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall
despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
For the conduct of the queen
will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she did not come.’
Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard about the queen’s conduct will say the same thing to all the king’s officials, resulting in much contempt and wrath.
And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
The edict the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom—and so all women, from the least to the greatest, will honor their husbands.”
If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I
will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s
treasuries.
If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will deposit ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury to pay those who carry it out.”
Then
Mordecai commanded to answer
Esther, Think not with
thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
he sent back to her this reply: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there
enlargement and
deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews
will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house
will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens
will fast likewise; and so
will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens
will fast as you do. After that, I
will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
Then said the king unto her, What
wilt thou, queen
Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.
“What is it, Queen
Esther?” the king inquired. “What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it
will be given to you.”
And the king said unto
Esther at the
banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.
And as they
drank their wine, the king said to
Esther, “What is your petition? It
will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it
will be fulfilled.”
If I have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and
Haman come to the
banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I
will do to
morrow as the king hath said.
If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and
fulfill my request, may the king and
Haman come
tomorrow to the
banquet I
will prepare for them. Then I
will answer the king’s question.”
And
Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had
befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If
Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.
Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since
Mordecai, before whom your
downfall has begun, is Jewish, you
will not prevail against him—for surely you
will fall before him.”
And the king said again unto
Esther on the second day at the
banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen
Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
and as they
drank their wine on that second day, the king asked once more, “Queen
Esther, what is your petition? It
will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it
will be fulfilled.”
Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the
banquet of wine; and
Haman was fallen upon the bed
whereon Esther was. Then said the king,
Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the
banquet hall,
Haman was falling on the
couch where
Esther was
reclining. The king
exclaimed, “Would he actually
assault the queen while I am in the palace?” As soon as the words had left the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
And the king said unto
Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in
Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of
Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.
who said to Queen
Esther, “In the citadel of
Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men, including
Haman’s ten sons. What have they done in the rest of the royal provinces? Now what is your petition? It
will be given to you. And what further do you request? It
will be fulfilled.”
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he
will curse thee to thy face.
But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he
will surely
curse You to Your face.”
And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s
womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
saying: “Naked I came from my mother’s
womb, and naked I
will return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin,
yea, all that a man hath
will he give for his life.
“Skin for skin!”
Satan replied. “A man
will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he
will curse thee to thy face.
But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he
will surely
curse You to Your face.”
“If one ventures a word with you,
will you be
wearied? Yet who can keep from speaking?
Call now, if there be any that
will answer thee; and to which of the saints
wilt thou turn?
“Call out if you please, but who will answer? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
He shall deliver thee in six troubles:
yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
In famine he shall
redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
In famine He
will redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
Thou shalt be
hid from the
scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
You
will be hidden from the
scourge of the tongue, and
will not fear
havoc when it comes.
At destruction and famine thou shalt
laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
You
will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy
habitation, and shalt not sin.
You
will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing
amiss when
inspecting your home.
Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth.
Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a
shock of corn cometh in in his season.
You
will come to the grave in full
vigor, like a
sheaf of grain gathered in season.
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
that God would be
willing to
crush me, to
unleash His hand and cut me off!
Teach me, and I
will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have
erred.
Teach me, and I
will be silent. Help me understand how I have
erred.
When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and
fro unto the
dawning of the day.
When I lie down I think: ‘When
will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I
toss and turn until
dawn.
