And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God
besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the man of God, “
Intercede with the LORD your God and pray that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God
interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.
And the king said unto the man of God, Come home
with me, and refresh
thyself, and I will give thee a reward.
Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home
with me and refresh
yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in
with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”
And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
But the man replied, “I cannot return with you or eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back
with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
So he went back
with him, and did eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
but the man of God went back
with him,
ate bread in his house, and
drank water.
And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and
slew him: and his
carcase was cast in the way, and the
ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the
carcase.
As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying in the road,
with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it.
And, behold, men passed by, and saw the
carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the
carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
And there were men passing by who saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing beside it, and they went and reported this in the city where the old prophet lived.
and he went and found the body lying in the road,
with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body or
mauled the
donkey.
And take
with thee ten
loaves, and cracknels, and a
cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.
Take
with you ten
loaves of bread, some cakes, and a
jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will become of the boy.”
And it was so, when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of
Jeroboam; why feignest thou
thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee
with heavy
tidings.
So when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet entering the door, he said, “Come in, wife of
Jeroboam! Why are you
disguised? For I have been sent to you
with bad news.
And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
I
tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you. But you were not like My servant David, who kept My commandments and followed Me
with all his heart, doing only what was right in My eyes.
And the days which
Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he
slept with his fathers, and
Nadab his son reigned in his
stead.
And the length of
Jeroboam’s reign was twenty-two years, and he rested
with his fathers, and his son
Nadab reigned in his place.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they
provoked him to jealousy
with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by the sins they committed they
provoked Him to
jealous anger more than all their fathers had done.

And
Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried
with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Rehoboam rested
with his fathers and was buried
with them in the City of David; his mother’s name was Naamah the
Ammonite. And his son Abijam reigned in his place.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.
And Abijam walked in all the sins that his father before him had committed, and his heart was not as fully devoted to the LORD his God as the heart of David his
forefather had been.

And Abijam
slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and
Asa his son reigned in his
stead.
And Abijam rested
with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and his son
Asa reigned in his place.
But the high places were not removed: nevertheless
Asa’s heart was perfect
with the LORD all his days.
The high places were not removed, but
Asa’s heart was fully devoted to the LORD all his days.
Then
Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king
Asa sent them to Ben-
hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
So
Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace. He entrusted it to his servants and sent them
with this message to Ben-
hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league
with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty
with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will
withdraw from me.”
And it came to pass, when
Baasha heard thereof, that he left off building of
Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.
Then King
Asa summoned all the men of Judah,
with no exceptions, and they carried away the stones of
Ramah and the timbers
Baasha had used for building. And
with these materials King
Asa built up Geba of Benjamin, as well as
Mizpah.

with his fathers in the city of David his father: and
Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his
stead.

Asa rested
with his fathers and was buried
with them in the city of his father David, and his son
Jehoshaphat reigned in his place.

Nadab, along

Forasmuch as I
exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to
provoke me to anger
with their sins;

Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to
provoke Me to anger by their sins.

So
Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Baasha rested
with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah, and his son Elah reigned in his place.
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger
with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger
with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck down the house of
Jeroboam.
For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger
with their

This happened because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,

And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died,
When Zimri saw that the city was captured, he entered the citadel of the royal palace and burned it down upon himself. So he died

Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin

provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger

So Omri
slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria: and
Ahab his son reigned in his
stead.
And Omri rested

Ahab reigned in his place.
And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do
with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O man of God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And he
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow
with whom I
sojourn, by
slaying her son?
Then he
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
For it was so, when
Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that
Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and
hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them
with bread and water.)
for when
Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD,
Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them
with food and water.)
Was it not told my lord what I did when
Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I
hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them
with bread and water?
Was it not reported to my lord what I did when
Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I
hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them
with food and water.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount
Carmel, and the prophets of
Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at
Jezebel’s table.
Now
summon all Israel to meet me on Mount
Carmel, along
with the four hundred and fifty prophets of
Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at
Jezebel’s table.”
And they
cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner
with knives and lancets, till the blood
gushed out upon them.
So they
shouted louder and cut themselves
with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood
gushed over them.
And
with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a
trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
And
with the stones,
Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he
dug a
trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.
And he put the wood in order, and cut the
bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels
with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, placed it on the wood,
And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the
trench also
with water.
So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the
trench.
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black
with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And
Ahab rode, and went to
Jezreel.
Meanwhile, the sky grew dark
with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So
Ahab rode away and went to
Jezreel.
Now
Ahab told
Jezebel everything that
Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets
with the sword.
Then
Jezebel sent a
messenger unto
Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to
morrow about this time.
So
Jezebel sent a
messenger to
Elijah, saying, “May the gods deal
with me, and ever so severely, if by this time
tomorrow I do not make your life like the lives of those you killed!”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets
with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets
with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets
with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets
with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
So he departed thence, and found
Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was
plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he
with the
twelfth: and
Elijah passed by him, and cast his
mantle upon him.
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and
slew them, and boiled their flesh
with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after
Elijah, and ministered unto him.
So
Elisha turned back from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them.
With the oxen’s
equipment, he
cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they
ate. Then he set out to follow and serve
Elijah.
And Ben-
hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings
with him, and horses, and
chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and
warred against it.
Now Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings
with their horses and
chariots, he marched up, besieged Samaria, and
waged war against it.
And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
And the king of Israel replied, “Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.”
And Ben-
hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
Then Ben-
hadad sent another message to
Ahab: “May the gods deal
with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust remains of Samaria for each of my men to have a handful.”
And they went out at
noon. But Ben-
hadad was drinking himself
drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
They marched out at
noon while Ben-
hadad and the 32 kings allied
with him were in their tents getting
drunk.
So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
Meanwhile, these young officers of the district governors marched out of the city, with the army behind them,
And they
slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse
with the
horsemen.
and each one struck down his
opponent. So the Arameans fled,
with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-
hadad king of
Aram escaped on
horseback with the cavalry.
And the king of Israel went out, and
smote the horses and
chariots, and
slew the Syrians
with a great slaughter.
Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the horses and
chariots,
inflicting a great slaughter on the Arameans.
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
So do this: Dismiss all the kings from their positions and replace them with other officers.
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel
with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
So
with sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘Please
spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
And Ben-
hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said
Ahab, I will send thee away
with this covenant. So he made a covenant
with him, and sent him away.
Ben-
hadad said to him, “I will restore the cities my father took from your father; you may set up your own marketplaces in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” “By this treaty I release you,”
Ahab replied. So he made a treaty
with him and sent him away.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and
disguised himself
with ashes upon his face.
and the prophet went and waited on the road for the king,
disguising himself
with a
bandage over his eyes.
And as the king passed by, he
cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
As the king passed by, he
cried out to the king: “Your servant had marched out into the middle of the battle, when suddenly a man came over
with a
captive and told me, ‘Guard this man! If he goes missing for any reason, your life will be exchanged for his life, or you will
weigh out a talent of silver.’
So she wrote letters in
Ahab’s name, and sealed them
with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling
with Naboth.
Then
Jezebel wrote letters in
Ahab’s name, sealed them
with his seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived
with Naboth in his city.
And there came in two men, children of
Belial, and sat before him: and the men of
Belial witnessed against him, even against
Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying,
Naboth did
blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him
with stones, that he died.
And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite
Naboth, and these men
testified against him before the people, saying, “
Naboth has
cursed both God and the king!” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.
And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.
Then three years passed
without war between
Aram and Israel.
And he said unto
Jehoshaphat,
Wilt thou go
with me to battle to
Ramoth-
gilead? And
Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
So he asked
Jehoshaphat, “Will you go
with me to fight against
Ramoth-
gilead?”
Jehoshaphat answered the king of Israel, “I am like you, my people are your people, and my horses are your horses.”
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, having put on their robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets
prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria,
with all the prophets
prophesying before them.
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD,
With these shalt thou
push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘
With these you shall
gore the Arameans until they are finished off.’”
And the
messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king
with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold now,
with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep
without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
But
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and
smote Micaiah on the
cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak
with you?”
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him
with bread of
affliction and
with water of
affliction, until I come in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his
chariots, saying, Fight neither
with small nor great, save only
with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his thirty-two
chariot commanders, “Do not fight
with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his
chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow
without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”

Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he made, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Ahab, along

Ahaziah reigned in his place.

And
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried
with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested
with his fathers and was buried
with them in the city of his father David. And his son Jehoram reigned in his place.
And they answered him, He was an
hairy man, and
girt with a
girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is
Elijah the Tishbite.
“He was a
hairy man,” they answered, “
with a leather belt around his
waist.” “It was
Elijah the Tishbite,” said the king.
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
Then King
Ahaziah sent to
Elijah a captain
with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to
Elijah, who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’”
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
So the king sent to
Elijah another captain
with his fifty men. And the captain said to
Elijah, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down at once!’”
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty
with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
So the king sent a third captain
with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before
Elijah, and
begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight.
Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former
fifties with their
fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Elijah, Go down
with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down
with him unto the king.
Then the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah, “Go down
with him. Do not be afraid of him.” So
Elijah got up and went down

chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both
asunder; and
Elijah went up by a
whirlwind into heaven.

“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants have fifty

Elisha replied.

Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me:
wilt thou go
with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
And he sent a message to
Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go
with me to fight against Moab?” “I will go,” replied
Jehoshaphat. “I am like you, my people are your people, and my horses are your horses.”
