Now it came to pass, when
Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now
Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and that the people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
That they feared greatly, because
Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So
Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly
alarmed, because
Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
Wherefore
Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of
Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of
Lachish, and unto Debir king of
Eglon, saying,
Therefore
Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of
Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of
Lachish, and Debir king of
Eglon, saying,
And there they found
Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking down the
Canaanites and
Perizzites.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As
Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And
Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
Then
Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered the scraps under my table. As I have done to them, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
his fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith; his fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital;
And
Adoram was over the tribute: and
Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:
Adoram was in charge of the forced labor;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
Then
Adonijah the son of Haggith
exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him
chariots and
horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
At that time
Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith, began to
exalt himself, saying, “I will be king!” And he acquired
chariots and
horsemen and fifty men to run
ahead of him.
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after
Absalom.
(His father had never once
reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?”
Adonijah was also very handsome, born next after
Absalom.)
And he conferred with
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with
Abiathar the priest: and they following
Adonijah helped him.
So
Adonijah conferred with
Joab son of Zeruiah and with
Abiathar the priest, who supported him.
But
Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and
Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and
Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with
Adonijah.
But
Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada,
Nathan the prophet, Shimei,
Rei, and David’s mighty men would not join
Adonijah.
And
Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants:
And
Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and
fattened calves near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel. He invited all his royal brothers and all the men of Judah who were servants of the king.
Wherefore
Nathan spake unto Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that
Adonijah the son of Haggith
doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
Then
Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that
Adonijah son of Haggith has become king, and our lord David does not know it?
Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my lord, O king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to King David and say, ‘My lord the king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has
Adonijah become king?’
And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, did not know it.
And
Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said,
Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
“My lord the king,” said
Nathan, “did you say, ‘
Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne’?
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king
Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King
Adonijah!’
And
Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now
Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
And while he yet spake, behold,
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest came: and
Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a
valiant man, and bringest good
tidings.
As he was speaking, suddenly
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said
Adonijah, “for you are a man of
valor. You must be bringing good news.”
And
Jonathan answered and said to
Adonijah,
Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
“Not at all,”
Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king.
And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.
And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold,
Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon
swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.
It was reported to Solomon: “Behold,
Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first
swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”
So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, who said to him, “Go to your home.”
And
Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou
peaceably? And he said,
Peaceably.
Now
Adonijah son of Haggith went to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, and she asked, “Do you come in peace?” “
Yes, in peace,” he replied.
And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
Bath-
sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for
Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for
Adonijah. The king stood up to
greet her, bowed to her, and sat down on his throne. Then the king had a throne brought for his mother, who sat down at his right hand.
And she said, Let
Abishag the Shunammite be given to
Adonijah thy brother to wife.
So Bathsheba said, “Let
Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother
Adonijah as his wife.”
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou ask
Abishag the Shunammite for
Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for
Abiathar the priest, and for
Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite for
Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the kingdom for him and for
Abiathar the priest and for
Joab son of Zeruiah!”
Then king Solomon
sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if
Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
Then King Solomon
swore by the LORD: “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if
Adonijah has not made this request at the expense of his life.
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded for me a dynasty as He promised—surely
Adonijah shall be put to death
today!”
And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
So King Solomon sent the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.
Then
tidings came to
Joab: for
Joab had turned after
Adonijah, though he turned not after
Absalom. And
Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
When the news reached
Joab, who had
conspired with
Adonijah but not with
Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.
And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.
Ahishar was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.
And he sent them to
Lebanon ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in
Lebanon, and two months at home: and
Adoniram was over the
levy.
He sent them to
Lebanon in monthly shifts of 10,000 men, so that they would
spend one month in
Lebanon and two months at home. And
Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor.
Then king
Rehoboam sent
Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king
Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his
chariot, to
flee to Jerusalem.
Then King
Rehoboam sent out
Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. And King
Rehoboam mounted his
chariot in
haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
And when
Jehu was come to
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and
tired her head, and looked out at a window.
Now when
Jehu arrived in
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it. So she painted her eyes,
adorned her head, and looked down from a window.
The third,
Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth,
Adonijah the son of Haggith:
the third was
Absalom the son of
Maacah daughter of King Talmai of Geshur; the fourth was
Adonijah the son of Haggith;
And he
garnished the house with precious stones for beauty: and the gold was gold of Parvaim.
He adorned the temple with precious stones for beauty, and its gold was from Parvaim.
And
Adoraim, and
Lachish, and Azekah,
And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and
Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and
Adonijah, and Tobijah, and
Tob-
adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.
accompanied by certain Levites—Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah,
Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,
Adonijah, Tobijah, and
Tob-
adonijah—along with the priests Elishama and Jehoram.

from the later descendants of Adonikam, these were their names: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;

Now when the turn of
Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of
Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s
chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And
Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
Now
Esther was the daughter of Abihail, the uncle from whom
Mordecai had
adopted her as his own daughter. And when it was her turn to go to the king, she did not ask for anything except what Hegai, the king’s trusted official in charge of the
harem, had
advised. And
Esther found favor in the eyes of
everyone who saw her.
Hath thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with
thunder?
Do you give strength to the horse or
adorn his neck with a
mane?
Kings’ daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of
Ophir.
The daughters of kings are among your honored women; the queen stands at your right hand,
adorned with the gold of
Ophir.
Your
testimonies are fully confirmed;
holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, for all the days to come.
But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.
That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the
similitude of a palace:
Then our sons will be like plants
nurtured in their youth, our daughters like corner pillars carved to
adorn a palace.
For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will
beautify the
meek with salvation.
For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He
adorns the
afflicted with salvation.
So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
They will be life to your soul and
adornment to your neck.
Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as
ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be
glad and
rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Take me away with you—let us
hurry! May the king bring me to his chambers. We will
rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. It is only right that they
adore you.
I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not
tarry: and I will place salvation in
Zion for Israel my glory.
I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away, and My salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to
Zion and
adorn Israel with My
splendor.
All the flocks of
Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will
glorify the house of my glory.
All the flocks of
Kedar will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth will serve you and go up on My altar with acceptance; I will
adorn My glorious house.
The glory of
Lebanon shall come unto thee, the
fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to
beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns herself with her jewels.
And when thou art
spoiled, what
wilt thou do? Though thou clothest
thyself with
crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make
thyself fair; thy lovers will
despise thee, they will seek thy life.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they
fasten it with
nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be
adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make
merry.
Again I will build you, and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out in joyful dancing.
I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
I
adorned you with
jewelry, and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain around your neck.
Thus
wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy
raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and
broidered work; thou
didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou
wast exceeding beautiful, and thou
didst prosper into a kingdom.
So you were
adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was made of fine linen, silk, and
embroidered cloth. You
ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became very beautiful and rose to be queen.
And
furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a
messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou
didst wash
thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst
thyself with ornaments,
Furthermore, you sisters sent messengers for men who came from
afar; and behold, when they arrived, you bathed for them, painted your eyes, and
adorned yourself with
jewelry.
Thou hast been in
Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the
sardius,
topaz, and the
diamond, the
beryl, the
onyx, and the
jasper, the
sapphire, the
emerald, and the
carbuncle, and gold: the
workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou
wast created.
You were in
Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone
adorned you:
ruby,
topaz, and
diamond,
beryl,
onyx, and
jasper,
sapphire,
turquoise, and
emerald. Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold, prepared on the day of your creation.
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like one of these.
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.
And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this
ado, and
weep? the
damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
Consider the
lilies how they grow: they
toil not, they
spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like one of these.
Consider how the
lilies grow: They do not labor or
spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was
adorned like one of these.
And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,
As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said,
And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
by promoting customs that are unlawful for us Romans to adopt or practice.”
For ye have not received the spirit of
bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of
adoption, whereby we cry,
Abba, Father.
For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of
sonship, by whom we cry, “
Abba! Father!”
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves
groan within ourselves, waiting for the
adoption, to wit, the
redemption of our body.
Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our
adoption as sons, the
redemption of our bodies.
Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory and the covenants; theirs the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises.
To
redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the
adoption of sons.
to
redeem those under the law, that we might receive our
adoption as sons.
Having
predestinated us unto the
adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will,
Likewise, I want the women to
adorn themselves with respectable
apparel, with
modesty, and with self-control, not with
braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
not
stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will
adorn the teaching about God our
Savior.
For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
For this is how the holy women of the past
adorned themselves. They put their hope in God and were
submissive to their husbands,
And the woman was
arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and
filthiness of her
fornication:
The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. She held in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.
And saying,
Alas,
alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
saying: “
Woe,
woe to the great city, clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.
I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.
The foundations of the city walls were
adorned with every kind of precious stone: The first foundation was
jasper, the second
sapphire, the third
chalcedony, the fourth
emerald,
The sons of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and seven: the sons of Bagoi, two thousand sixty and six: the sons of Adin, four hundred fifty and four:
Of the sons of
Adonikam the last, and these are the names of them, Eliphalet,
Jewel, and Samaias, and with them seventy men:
And being gloriously adorned, after she had called upon God, who is the beholder and saviour of all things, she took two maids with her:
And finishing the service at the altar, that he might

Almighty,
And the king worshipped it and went daily to
adore it: but Daniel worshipped his own God. And the king said unto him, Why
dost not thou worship
Bel?
Where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much
ado and great carriage: and the
bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of musick, and many weapons.
And after this came Tryphon to
invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto
Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place,
wheresoever he went.
For as the master builder of a new house must care for the whole building; but he that undertaketh to set it out, and
paint it, must seek out fit things for the
adorning thereof: even so I think it is with us.
For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him, and
adorned with a very fair covering, and he ran fiercely, and
smote at
Heliodorus with his forefeet, and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete
harness of gold.
