And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as
Appii Forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he
thanked God, and took courage.
The brothers there had heard
about us and traveled as far as the
Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave
thanks to God.
And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any
harm of thee.
The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters
about you from
Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad
about you.
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his
lodging; to whom he
expounded and
testified the kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He
expounded to them from morning to evening,
testifying about the kingdom of God and
persuading them
about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which
concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man
forbidding him.
Boldly and freely he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath
whereof to glory; but not before God.
If Abraham was indeed justified by works, he had something to
boast about, but not before God.
And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was
about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of
Sarah’s
womb:
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For I
testify about them that they are
zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Because they were ignorant of God’s righteousness and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.
God hath not cast away his people which he
foreknew.
Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh
intercession to God against Israel, saying,
God did not
reject His people, whom He
foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says
about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
Hast thou faith? have it to
thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
Keep your belief
about such matters between
yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not
condemn himself by what he approves.
Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round
about unto
Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
by the power of signs and wonders, and by the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to
Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand.
Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about Him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am
glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
Everyone has heard
about your obedience, so I
rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise
about what is good and innocent
about what is evil.
Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with
excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
Now concerning the things
whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
Now for the matters you wrote
about: It is good to
abstain from sexual relations.
Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
Now
about virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is
trustworthy.
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
I want you to be free from
concern. The unmarried man is concerned
about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord.
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife,
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an
idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
So
about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an
idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.
Have we not power to lead
about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and
Cephas?
Have we no right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and
Cephas?
For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not
muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.
Doth God take care for oxen?
For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not
muzzle an ox while it is
treading out the grain.” Is it
about oxen that God is concerned?
Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
Do you not know that those who work in the temple eat of its food, and those who serve at the altar
partake of its offerings?
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto
condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
If
anyone is
hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions
about the remaining matters.
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have
testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses
about God. For we have
testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.
I face death every day, brothers, as surely as I
boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of
Galatia, even so do ye.
Now
about the collection for the saints, you are to do as I directed the churches of
Galatia:
As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he had received from you. He told us
about your longing, your
mourning, and your zeal for me, so that I
rejoiced all the more.
For if I have
boasted any thing to him of you, I am not
ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our
boasting, which I made before
Titus, is found a truth.
Indeed, I was not
embarrassed by anything I had
boasted to him
about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our
boasting to
Titus has proved to be true as well.
Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of
Macedonia;
Now, brothers, we want you to know
about the grace that God has given the churches of
Macedonia.
And
herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
Wherefore
shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our
boasting on your behalf.
In full view of the churches, then, show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our
boasting about you.
For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is
superfluous for me to write to you:
Now about the service to the saints, there is no need for me to write to you.
Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our
boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready:
But I am sending the brothers in order that our
boasting about you in this matter should not prove empty, but that you will be prepared, just as I said.
For though I should
boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for
edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be
ashamed:
For even if I
boast somewhat excessively
about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than
tearing you down, I will not be
ashamed.
I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine
infirmities.
I will
boast about such a man, but I will not
boast about myself, except in my weaknesses.
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
If ye have heard of the
dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to youward:
Surely you have heard
about the
stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you,
Then we will no longer be infants,
tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the
clever cunning of men in their
deceitful scheming.
This is a great
mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
This
mystery is profound, but I am speaking
about Christ and the church.
Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on the
breastplate of righteousness;
But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do,
Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know
about me and what I am doing.
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know
about us, and that he may
encourage your hearts.
Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and
confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
It is right for me to feel this way
about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my
defense and
confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind
striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Nevertheless, conduct
yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear
about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit,
contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,
Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall
reveal even this unto you.
All of us who are
mature should embrace this point of view. And if you think differently
about some issue, God will
reveal this to you as well.
Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all the saints—
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
Do not let
anyone who delights in false
humility and the worship of angels
disqualify you with speculation
about what he has seen. Such a person is
puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind.
All my state shall
Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:
Tychicus will tell you all the news
about me. He is a beloved brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow servant in the Lord.
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;
I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know
about us, and that he may
encourage your hearts.
With
Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.
With him I am sending
Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you
about everything here.
Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and
Marcus, sister’s son to
Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)
My fellow prisoner
Aristarchus sends you greetings, as does Mark the cousin of
Barnabas. You have already received instructions
about him: If he comes to you,
welcome him.
For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in
Laodicea, and them in
Hierapolis.
For this cause, when I could no longer
forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the
tempter have
tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out
about your faith, for fear that the
tempter had
somehow tempted you and caused our labor to be in vain.
But now when
Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good
tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good
remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
But just now,
Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news
about your faith, your love, and the fond
memories you have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you.
Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our
affliction and distress by your faith:
For this reason, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we have been
reassured about you, because of your faith.
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye
yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
Now
about brotherly love, you do not need
anyone to write to you, because you
yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed
about those who sleep in death, so that you will not
grieve like the rest, who are without hope.
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you.
So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your
patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye
endure:
This charge I commit unto thee, son
Timothy, according to the
prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
Timothy, my child, I
entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous
prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight,
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and
verity.
For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything.
And
withal they learn to be idle, wandering
about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house and being not only idle, but also gossips and
busybodies,
discussing things they should not mention.
He is proud, knowing nothing, but
doting about questions and strifes of words,
whereof cometh
envy,
strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Which in his times he shall
shew, who is the blessed and only
Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time.
Of these things put them in
remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they
strive not
about words to no profit, but to the
subverting of the hearers.
Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin.
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be
ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
and
wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that
anyone who opposes us will be
ashamed, having nothing bad to say
about us.
not
stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will
adorn the teaching
about God our
Savior.
But avoid
foolish questions, and
genealogies, and contentions, and strivings
about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.
And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Now about the angels He says: “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.”
But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a
sceptre of righteousness is the
sceptre of thy kingdom.
But
about the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, endures
forever and ever, and justice is the
scepter of Your kingdom.
For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come,
whereof we speak.
For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
For
somewhere He has spoken
about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain, because you are dull of hearing.
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings
about Christ and go on to
maturity, not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
For it is evident that our Lord
sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe as to which Moses said nothing about priests.
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was
admonished of God when he was
about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was
warned when he was
about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
Which had the golden
censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round
about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had
manna, and Aaron’s rod that
budded, and the tables of the covenant;
containing the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. Inside the ark were the gold
jar of
manna, Aaron’s staff that had
budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written
about Me in the
scroll: I have come to do Your will, O God.’”
Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First He says:
By faith
Noah, being
warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
By faith
Noah, when
warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones.
By faith the walls of
Jericho fell down, after they were compassed
about seven days.
By faith the walls of
Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days.
They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute,
oppressed, and mistreated.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed
about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
doth so easily
beset us, and let us run with
patience the race that is set before us,
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every
encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with
endurance the race set out for us.
Be not carried
about with
divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace and not by foods of no value to those devoted to them.
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
