Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal.
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned
about with a very small
helm,
whithersoever the governor listeth.
Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are
steered by a very small
rudder wherever the
pilot is inclined.
Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
Do not
complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable
wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them
about such matters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people
distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
These things have I written unto you concerning them that
seduce you.
I have written these things to you
about those who are trying to
deceive you.
But the
anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same
anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall
abide in him.
And as for you, the
anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need
anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine
anointing teaches you
about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath
testified of his Son.
Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son.
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a
liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him;
whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a
liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given
about His Son.
For I
rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and
testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
For I was overjoyed when the brothers came and
testified about your devotion to the truth, in which you continue to walk.
Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
They have
testified to the church
about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
I have written to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not accept our instruction.
Beloved, when I gave all
diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and
exhort you that ye should earnestly
contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you
about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and
urge you to
contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.
Even as
Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities
about them in like manner, giving themselves over to
fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the
vengeance of eternal fire.
In like manner,
Sodom and
Gomorrah and the cities around them, who
indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who
sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
But even the
archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not
presume to bring a
slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord
rebuke you!”
These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried
about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead,
plucked up by the roots;
These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,
shamelessly feasting with you but
shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
And
Enoch also, the seventh from Adam,
prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also
prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in
tribulation, and in the kingdom and
patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called
Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
I, John, your brother and
partner in the
tribulation and kingdom and
perseverance that are in Jesus, was on the island of
Patmos because of the word of God and my testimony
about Jesus.
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and
girt about the paps with a golden
girdle.
and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long
robe, with a golden
sash around His chest.
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have
tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Do not fear what you are
about to suffer. Look, the devil is
about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will suffer
tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Be watchful, and
strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Wake up and
strengthen what remains, which was
about to die; for I have found your deeds incomplete in the sight of My God.
Because thou hast kept the word of my
patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of
temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Because you have kept My command to
persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is
about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
So then because thou art
lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will
spue thee out of my mouth.
So because you are
lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am
about to
vomit you out of My mouth!
And he that sat was to look upon like a
jasper and a
sardine stone: and there was a
rainbow round
about the throne, in sight like unto an
emerald.
And round
about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white
raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and on these thrones sat twenty-four elders dressed in white, with golden crowns on their heads.
And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
And before the throne was something like a sea of glass, as clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and back.
And the four beasts had each of them six wings
about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God
Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
And each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God
Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
And I
beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round
about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels and living creatures and elders
encircling the throne, and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands.
And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. And they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God,
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.
When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
And I
beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice,
Woe,
woe,
woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the
trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead, calling in a loud voice, “
Woe!
Woe!
Woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the
trumpet blasts
about to be sounded by the remaining three angels!”
And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to put it in writing. But I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.”
But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the
mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is
about to sound his
trumpet, the
mystery of God will be fulfilled, just as He proclaimed to His servants the prophets.”
And he said unto me, Thou must
prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
And they told me, “You must
prophesy again
about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.”
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the
dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to
devour her child as soon as it was born.
His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky,
tossing them to the earth. And the
dragon stood before the woman who was
about to give birth, ready to
devour her child as soon as she gave birth.
And there fell upon men a great
hail out of heaven, every stone
about the weight of a talent: and men
blasphemed God because of the plague of the
hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
And great hailstones weighing almost a hundred pounds each rained down on them from above. And men
cursed God for the plague of
hail, because it was so
horrendous.
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall
ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into
perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
The beast that you saw—it was, and now is no more, but is
about to come up out of the
Abyss and go to its destruction. And those who dwell on the earth whose names were not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world will
marvel when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet will be.
And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints
about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them.
And they marched across the broad
expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them.
Whosoever then dwell in the places
about, let them help him, those, I say, that are his neighbours, with gold, and with silver,
And they that dwelt round
about them, and helped them in all things with silver and gold, with horses and cattle, and with very many free gifts of a great number whose minds were
stirred up
thereto.
As, to be clothed in purple, to drink in gold, and to sleep upon gold, and a
chariot with bridles of gold, and an
headtire of fine linen, and a chain
about his neck:
And these keep watch round about him, neither may any one depart, and do his own business, neither disobey they him in any thing.
O ye men, are not women strong? great is the earth, high is the heaven, swift is the sun in his course, for he compasseth the heavens round about, and fetcheth his course again to his own place in one day.
They shall come to her, and
besiege her, the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her: then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven, and all they that be
about her shall
bewail her.
And my clothes to the naked: and if I saw any of my nation dead, or cast about the walls of Nineve, I buried him.
Now
Anna sat looking
about toward the way for her son.
And built in Ecbatane walls round
about of stones
hewn three cubits broad and six cubits long, and made the height of the wall seventy cubits, and the breadth thereof fifty cubits:
So they and all the country round
about received them with garlands, with dances, and with
timbrels.
Thus every man and women, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their
sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put
sackcloth about the altar,
And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round
about the tent
murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.
And when the
tumult of men that were
about the council was ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Assur said unto Achior and all the Moabites before all the company of other nations,
Then the children of Israel
cried unto the Lord their God, because their heart failed, for all their enemies had compassed them round
about, and there was no way to escape out from among them.
Thus all the company of Assur remained
about them, both their
footmen,
chariots, and
horsemen, four and thirty days, so that all their vessels of water failed all the inhibitants of Bethulia.
Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes upon her head, and uncovered the
sackcloth wherewith she was clothed; and
about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord
Judith cried with a loud voice, and said,
And she took
sandals upon her feet, and put
about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked herself
bravely, to
allure the eyes of all men that should see her.
Then was there a
concourse throughout all the camp: for her coming was noised among the tents, and they came
about her, as she stood without the tent of Holofernes, till they told him of her.
And then they ran all together, both small and great, for it was strange unto them that she was come: so they opened the gate, and received them, and made a fire for a light, and stood round about them.
They also that had camped in the mountains round
about Bethulia fled away. Then the children of Israel, every one that was a
warrior among them,
rushed out upon them.
And he heard their devices, and searched out their purposes, and learned that they were
about to lay hands upon Artexerxes the king; and so he
certified the king of them.
But he, not bearing his great dignity, went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life:
For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her, sheweth herself favourably unto them in the ways, and meeteth them in every thought.
And great pleasure it is to have her friendship; and in the works of her hands are infinite riches; and in the exercise of conference with her,
prudence; and in talking with her, a good report; I went
about seeking how to take her to me.
Now a
carpenter that felleth timber, after he hath
sawn down a tree meet for the purpose, and taken off all the bark skilfully round
about, and hath wrought it handsomely, and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of man’s life;
Again, one preparing himself to sail, and
about to pass through the
raging waves, calleth upon a piece of wood more
rotten than the vessel that carrieth him.
For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear: but noises as of waters falling down sounded
about them, and
sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances.
Therefore even with blindness were these
stricken, as those were at the doors of the righteous man: when, being compassed
about with
horrible great darkness, every one sought the passage of his own doors.
Come unto her as one that ploweth and soweth, and wait for her good fruits: for thou shalt not
toil much in labouring
about her, but thou shalt eat of her fruits right soon.
Thou shalt put her on as a
robe of honour, and shalt put her
about thee as a crown of joy.
Look not round
about thee in the streets of the city, neither
wander thou in the solitary place thereof.
There is a word that is clothed
about with death: God grant that it be not found in the
heritage of Jacob; for all such things shall be far from the godly, and they shall not
wallow in their sins.
A man that breaketh
wedlock, saying thus in his heart, Who
seeth me? I am compassed
about with darkness, the walls cover me, and no body
seeth me; what need I to fear? the most High will not remember my sins:
Look that thou
hedge thy possession
about with thorns, and bind up thy silver and gold,
So
doth the
potter sitting at his work, and turning the wheel
about with his feet, who is
alway carefully set at his work, and maketh all his work by number;
The
mourning of men is
about their bodies: but an ill name of sinners shall be
blotted out.
It compasseth the heaven about with a glorious circle, and the hands of the most High have bended it.
And he compassed him with pomegranates, and with many golden bells round
about, that as he went there might be a sound, and a noise made that might be heard in the temple, for a
memorial to the children of his people;
Solomon reigned in a peaceable time, and was honoured; for God made all quiet round about him, that he might build an house in his name, and prepare his sanctuary for ever.
And by him was built from the foundation the double height, the high fortress of the wall about the temple:
When he took the portions out of the priests’ hands, he himself stood by the
hearth of the altar, compassed
about, as a young
cedar in Libanus; and as palm trees compassed they him round
about.
Moreover he hath delivered them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are round
about us, to be as a reproach and
desolation among all the people round
about, where the Lord hath scattered them.
For when she saw the wrath of God coming upon you, she said,
Hearken, O ye that dwell
about Sion: God hath brought upon me great
mourning;
Let them that dwell
about Sion come, and remember ye the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the
Everlasting hath brought upon them.
O Jerusalem, look about thee toward the east, and behold the joy that cometh unto thee from God.
Cast
about thee a double garment of the righteousness which cometh from God; and set a
diadem on thine head of the glory of the
Everlasting.
Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand on high, and look
about toward the east, and behold thy children gathered from the west unto the east by the word of the Holy One,
rejoicing in the
remembrance of God.
Notwithstanding the gold that is
about them to make them beautiful, except they
wipe off the
rust, they will not
shine: for neither when they were
molten did they feel it.
The women also with cords
about them, sitting in the ways, burn
bran for
perfume: but if any of them, drawn by some that passeth by, lie with him, she reproacheth her fellow, that she was not thought as worthy as herself, nor her cord broken.
And it passed through, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the furnace.
In those days went there out of Israel wicked men, who persuaded many, saying, Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow.
Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars:
So he
gat his people great honour, and put on a
breastplate as a
giant, and
girt his warlike
harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
Then began the fear of
Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great
dread, to fall upon the nations round
about them:
And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well
harnessed, and compassed round
about with
horsemen; and these were
expert of war.
So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of
Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.
At that time also they builded up the mount
Sion with high walls and strong towers round
about, lest the Gentiles should come and
tread it down as they had done before.
Now when the nations round about heard that the altar was built and the sanctuary renewed as before, it displeased them very much.
And sent letters unto
Judas and his brethren, The heathen that are round
about us are assembled together against us to destroy us:
Yea, all our brethren that were in the places of Tobie are put to death: their wives and their children also they have carried away
captives, and borne away their stuff; and they have destroyed there
about a thousand men.
