And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision
and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so that a
herald may run with it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,
and not lie: though it
tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not
tarry.
For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as
hell,
and is as death,
and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations,
and heapeth unto him all people:
and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an
arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his
appetite like
Sheol,
and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself
and collects all the peoples as his own.
Shall not all these take up a parable against him,
and a
taunting proverb against him,
and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long?
and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his
and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall
bite thee,
and awake that shall
vex thee,
and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
Will not your creditors suddenly arise
and those who
disturb you
awaken? Then you will become their prey.
Because thou hast
spoiled many nations, all the
remnant of the people shall
spoil thee; because of men’s blood,
and for the violence of the land, of the city,
and of all that dwell therein.
Because you have
plundered many nations, the
remnant of the people will
plunder you— because of your
bloodshed against man
and your violence against the land, the city,
and all their dwellers.
Woe to him that coveteth an evil
covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high
and escape the hand of
disaster!
Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people,
and hast
sinned against thy soul.
You have
plotted shame for your house by cutting off many peoples
and forfeiting your life.
For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.
For the stones will cry out from the wall,
and the rafters will
echo it from the
woodwork.
Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood,
and stablisheth a city by iniquity!
Woe to him who builds a city with
bloodshed and establishes a town by iniquity!
Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire,
and the people shall
weary themselves for very vanity?
Is it not indeed from the LORD of Hosts that the labor of the people only feeds the fire,
and the nations
weary themselves in vain?
Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy
bottle to him,
and makest him
drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin until they are
drunk, in order to
gaze at their nakedness!
Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also,
and let thy
foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee,
and shameful
spewing shall be on thy glory.
You will be filled with shame instead of glory. You too must drink
and expose your
uncircumcision! The cup in the LORD’s right hand will come around to you,
and utter disgrace will cover your glory.
For the violence of
Lebanon shall cover thee,
and the
spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood,
and for the violence of the land, of the city,
and of all that dwell therein.
For your violence against
Lebanon will
overwhelm you,
and the destruction of animals will
terrify you, because of your
bloodshed against men
and your violence against the land, the city,
and all their dwellers.
What profiteth the
graven image that the maker thereof hath
graven it; the
molten image,
and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make
dumb idols?
What use is an
idol, that a
craftsman should
carve it— or an image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.
Woe unto him that saith to the wood,
Awake; to the
dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold
and silver,
and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘
Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’ Can it give guidance? Behold, it is overlaid with gold
and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.”
O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in
awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!
God came from Teman,
and the Holy One from mount
Paran.
Selah. His glory covered the heavens,
and the earth was full of his praise.
God came from Teman,
and the Holy One from Mount
Paran.
Selah His glory covered the heavens,
and His praise filled the earth.
And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power.
Before him went the
pestilence,
and burning coals went forth at his feet.
Plague went before Him, and fever followed in His steps.
He stood,
and measured the earth: he
beheld,
and drove
asunder the nations;
and the
everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are
everlasting.
I saw the tents of Cushan in distress; the curtains of
Midian were
trembling.
Was the LORD displeased against the rivers? was thine anger against the rivers? was thy wrath against the sea, that thou
didst ride upon thine horses
and thy
chariots of salvation?
Were You
angry at the rivers, O LORD? Was Your wrath against the streams? Did You
rage against the sea when You
rode on Your horses, on Your
chariots of salvation?
The mountains saw thee,
and they
trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice,
and lifted up his hands on high.
The mountains saw You
and quaked; torrents of water swept by. The deep
roared with its voice
and lifted its hands on high.
Sun
and moon stood still in their places at the
flash of Your flying arrows, at the brightness of Your
shining spear.
Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine
anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck.
Selah.
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, to save Your
anointed. You
crushed the head of the house of the wicked
and stripped him from head to
toe.
Selah When I heard, my
belly trembled; my lips
quivered at the voice:
rottenness entered into my bones,
and I
trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will
invade them with his troops.
I heard
and trembled within; my lips
quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I
trembled where I stood. Yet I must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who
invade us.
Although the fig tree shall not
blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail,
and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold,
and there shall be no
herd in the stalls:
Though the fig tree does not
bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold
and no cattle are in the stalls,
The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.
GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.
I will
consume man
and beast; I will
consume the fowls of the heaven,
and the fishes of the sea,
and the stumblingblocks with the wicked;
and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
“I will
sweep away man
and beast; I will
sweep away the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
and the idols with their wicked worshipers. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah,
and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
and I will cut off the
remnant of
Baal from this place,
and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;
“I will stretch out My hand against Judah
and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every
remnant of
Baal, the names of the
idolatrous and pagan priests—
And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops;
and them that worship
and that
swear by the LORD,
and that
swear by Malcham;
those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven, those who bow down
and swear by the LORD but also
swear by Milcom,
And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.
and those who turn back from following the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”
And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will
punish the princes,
and the king’s children,
and all such as are clothed with strange
apparel.
“On the Day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will
punish the princes, the sons of the king,
and all who are dressed in foreign
apparel.
In the same day also will I
punish all those that
leap on the
threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with violence
and deceit.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate,
and an
howling from the second,
and a great
crashing from the hills.
On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, a
wail from the Second District,
and a loud
crashing from the hills.
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles,
and punish the men that are settled on their
lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
and punish the men settled in
complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
Therefore their goods shall become a
booty,
and their houses a
desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them;
and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.
Their wealth will be
plundered and their houses laid waste. They will build houses but not inhabit them,
and plant vineyards but never drink their wine.
The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.
The great Day of the LORD is near— near
and coming quickly.
Listen, the Day of the LORD! Then the cry of the mighty will be bitter.
That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble
and distress, a day of wasteness
and desolation, a day of darkness
and gloominess, a day of clouds
and thick darkness,
That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble
and distress, a day of destruction
and desolation, a day of darkness
and gloom, a day of clouds
and blackness,
a day of horn blast and battle cry against the fortified cities, and against the high corner towers.
And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have
sinned against the LORD:
and their blood shall be poured out as dust,
and their flesh as the dung.
I will bring such distress on mankind that they will walk like the blind, because they have
sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust
and their flesh like dung.
Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the
chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.
before the decree takes effect
and the day passes like
chaff, before the burning anger of the LORD comes upon you, before the Day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you.
For
Gaza will be abandoned,
and Ashkelon left in ruins.
Ashdod will be driven out at
noon,
and Ekron will be uprooted.
Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O
Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.
Woe to the dwellers of the
seacoast, O nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O
Canaan, land of the Philistines: “I will destroy you,
and no one will be left.”
And the sea coast shall be dwellings
and cottages for
shepherds,
and folds for flocks.
So the
seacoast will become a land of pastures, with wells for
shepherds and folds for sheep.
And the coast shall be for the
remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed
thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them,
and turn away their captivity.
The coast will belong to the
remnant of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. They will lie down in the evening among the houses of Ashkelon, for the LORD their God will attend to them
and restore their
captives.
I have heard the reproach of Moab,
and the revilings of the children of
Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people,
and magnified themselves against their border.
“I have heard the reproach of Moab
and the insults of the
Ammonites, who have
taunted My people
and threatened their borders.
Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as
Sodom,
and the children of
Ammon as
Gomorrah, even the breeding of
nettles,
and saltpits,
and a perpetual
desolation: the residue of my people shall
spoil them,
and the
remnant of my people shall possess them.
Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will be like
Sodom and the
Ammonites like
Gomorrah— a place of weeds
and salt pits, a perpetual wasteland. The
remnant of My people will
plunder them; the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.”
This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached
and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
This they shall have in return for their pride, for
taunting and mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will
famish all the gods of the earth;
and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.
The LORD will be
terrifying to them when He starves all the gods of the earth. Then the nations of every shore will bow in worship to Him, each in its own place.
And he will stretch out his hand against the north,
and destroy Assyria;
and will make
Nineveh a
desolation,
and dry like a wilderness.
And He will stretch out His hand against the north
and destroy Assyria; He will make
Nineveh a
desolation, as dry as a desert.
And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the
cormorant and the
bittern shall
lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows;
desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the
cedar work.
This is the
rejoicing city that dwelt
carelessly, that said in her heart, I am,
and there is none beside me: how is she become a
desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss,
and wag his hand.
This carefree city that dwells securely, that thinks to herself: “I am it,
and there is none besides me,” what a ruin she has become, a resting place for beasts.
Everyone who passes by her hisses
and shakes his
fist.
Her prophets are light
and treacherous persons: her priests have
polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.
Her prophets are
reckless, faithless men. Her priests
profane the sanctuary; they do violence to the law.
I said, Surely thou
wilt fear me, thou
wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off,
howsoever I punished them: but they rose early,
and corrupted all their doings.
I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me
and accept correction.’ Then her dwelling place would not be cut off
despite all for which I punished her. But they rose early to corrupt all their deeds.
For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
For then I will restore pure lips to the peoples, that all may call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him shoulder to shoulder.
In that day shalt thou not be
ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast
transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that
rejoice in thy pride,
and thou shalt no more be
haughty because of my holy mountain.
On that day you will not be put to shame for any of the deeds by which you have
transgressed against Me. For then I will remove from among you those who
rejoice in their pride,
and you will never again be
haughty on My holy mountain.
I will also leave in the midst of thee an
afflicted and poor people,
and they shall trust in the name of the LORD.
But I will leave within you a
meek and humble people,
and they will trust in the name of the LORD.
The
remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed
and lie down,
and none shall make them afraid.
The
remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies, nor will a
deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will feed
and lie down, with no one to make them
tremble.”
Sing, O daughter of
Zion;
shout, O Israel; be
glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not:
and to
Zion, Let not thine hands be
slack.
On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O
Zion; do not let your hands fall
limp.
Behold, at that time I will
undo all that
afflict thee:
and I will save her that halteth,
and gather her that was driven out;
and I will get them praise
and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.
Behold, at that time, I will deal with all who
afflict you. I will save the
lame and gather the scattered;
and I will
appoint praise
and fame for the disgraced throughout the earth.
At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD.
At that time I will bring you in;
yes, at that time I will gather you. For I will give you fame
and praise among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your
captives before your very eyes,” says the LORD.
In the second year of
Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by
Haggai the prophet unto
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
In the second year of the reign of
Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through
Haggai the prophet to
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, stating
Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
“Is it a time for you
yourselves to live in your
paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?”
Ye have sown much,
and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye
clothe you, but there is none warm;
and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a
bag with holes.
You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You
earn wages to put into a
bag pierced through.”
Go up to the mountain,
and bring wood,
and build the house;
and I will take pleasure in it,
and I will be
glorified, saith the LORD.
Go up into the hills, bring down
lumber,
and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it
and be
glorified, says the LORD.
Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little.
And what you brought home, I
blew away. Why? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is
busy with his own house.
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from
dew,
and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
Therefore, on account of you the heavens have
withheld their
dew and the earth has
withheld its crops.
And I called for a
drought upon the land,
and upon the mountains,
and upon the corn,
and upon the new wine,
and upon the oil,
and upon that which the ground bringeth forth,
and upon men,
and upon cattle,
and upon all the labour of the hands.
I have summoned a
drought on the fields
and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine,
and oil,
and on whatever the ground yields, on man
and beast,
and on all the labor of your hands.”
Then
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel,
and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the
remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God,
and the words of
Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him,
and the people did fear before the LORD.
Then
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel
and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the
remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God
and the words of the prophet
Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD.
And the LORD
stirred up the spirit of
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest,
and the spirit of all the
remnant of the people;
and they came
and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
So the LORD
stirred the spirit of
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the
remnant of the people.
And they came
and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God,
In the four
and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of
Darius the king.
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King
Darius.
In the seventh month, in the one
and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet
Haggai, saying,
On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through
Haggai the prophet, saying:
Speak now to
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest,
and to the residue of the people, saying,
“Speak to
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest,
and also to the
remnant of the people. Ask them,
Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’
Yet now be strong, O
Zerubbabel, saith the LORD;
and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest;
and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD,
and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
But now be strong, O
Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.
And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts.
According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”
For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while,
and I will
shake the heavens,
and the earth,
and the sea,
and the dry land;
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while, I will
shake the heavens
and the earth, the sea
and the dry land.
And I will
shake all nations,
and the desire of all nations shall come:
and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will
shake all the nations,
and they will come with all their treasures,
and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Hosts.
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
In the four
and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of
Darius, came the word of the LORD by
Haggai the prophet, saying,
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of
Darius, the word of the LORD came to
Haggai the prophet, saying,
If one bear holy flesh in the
skirt of his garment,
and with his
skirt do touch bread, or
pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy?
And the priests answered
and said, No.
If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment,
and it touches bread,
stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that
item become holy?’” “No,” replied the priests.
Then said
Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean?
And the priests answered
and said, It shall be unclean.
Then answered
Haggai,
and said, So is this people,
and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD;
and so is every work of their hands;
and that which they offer there is unclean.
Then
Haggai replied, “So it is with this people
and this nation before Me, declares the LORD,
and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is
defiled.
And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:
Now consider carefully from this day forward: Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
I
smote you with blasting
and with
mildew and with
hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.
I struck you—all the work of your hands—with
blight,
mildew,
and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.
Consider now from this day
and upward, from the four
and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it.
Consider carefully from this day forward—from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider carefully:
Is the seed yet in the
barn?
yea, as yet the vine,
and the fig tree,
and the
pomegranate,
and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I
bless you.
Is there still seed in the
barn? The vine, the fig, the
pomegranate,
and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will
bless you.”
And again the word of the LORD came unto
Haggai in the four
and twentieth day of the month, saying,
For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to
Haggai, saying,
Speak to
Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will
shake the heavens
and the earth;
“Tell
Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am about to
shake the heavens
and the earth:
And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms,
and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen;
and I will overthrow the
chariots,
and those that
ride in them;
and the horses
and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
I will overturn royal thrones
and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn
chariots and their riders; horses
and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O
Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD,
and will make thee as a
signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD,
and I will make you like My
signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.
So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Return to Me, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of Hosts.’
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways,
and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways
and deeds.’ But they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?
Where are your fathers now?
And the prophets, do they live
forever?
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words
and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways
and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
