And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people
gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
When Jesus returned, the crowd
welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
And, behold, there came a man named Jairus,
and he was a ruler of the
synagogue:
and he fell down at Jesus’ feet,
and besought him that he would come into his house:
Just then a
synagogue leader named Jairus came
and fell at Jesus’ feet. He
begged Him to come to his house,
For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age,
and she lay a dying. But as he went the people
thronged him.
because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,
And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be
healed of any,
including a woman who had suffered from
bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one was able to
heal her.
Came behind him,
and touched the border of his garment:
and immediately her issue of blood
stanched.
She came up behind Jesus
and touched the
fringe of His
cloak,
and immediately her
bleeding stopped.
And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter
and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude
throng thee
and press thee,
and sayest thou, Who touched me?
“Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it. “Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”
And Jesus said,
Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”
And when the woman saw that she was not
hid, she came
trembling,
and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him
and how she was
healed immediately.
Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came
trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him
and how she had immediately been
healed.
And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has
healed you. Go in peace.”
But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
But Jesus overheard them
and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe,
and she will be
healed.”
And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter,
and James,
and John,
and the father
and the mother of the
maiden.
When He entered the house, He did not allow
anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James,
and the child’s father
and mother.
And all
wept,
and bewailed her: but he said,
Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
And they
laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.
And he put them all out,
and took her by the hand,
and called, saying,
Maid, arise.
But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
And her spirit came again,
and she arose
straightway:
and he commanded to give her meat.
Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.
And her parents were
astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Her parents were
astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell
anyone what had happened.
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
Then Jesus called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and power to cure diseases.
And he sent them to
preach the kingdom of God,
and to
heal the sick.
And He sent them out to
proclaim the kingdom of God
and to
heal the sick.
And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither
staves, nor
scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats
apiece.
“Take nothing for the journey,” He told them, “no staff, no
bag, no bread, no money, no second
tunic.
Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that area.
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city,
shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
If
anyone does not
welcome you,
shake the dust off your feet when you leave that town, as a testimony against them.”
And they departed,
and went through the towns, preaching the gospel,
and healing every where.
So they set out
and went from village to village, preaching the gospel
and healing people everywhere.
Now Herod the
tetrarch heard of all that was done by him:
and he was
perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
When Herod the
tetrarch heard about all that was happening, he was
perplexed. For some were saying that John had risen from the dead,
And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
others that
Elijah had appeared,
and still others that a prophet of old had arisen.
And Herod said, John have I
beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things?
And he desired to see him.
“I
beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this man I hear such things about?”
And he kept trying to see Jesus.
And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done.
And he took them,
and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called
Bethsaida.
Then the apostles returned
and reported to Jesus all that they had done. Taking them away privately, He withdrew to a town called
Bethsaida.
And the people, when they knew it, followed him:
and he received them,
and spake unto them of the kingdom of God,
and healed them that had need of
healing.
But the crowds found out
and followed Him. He
welcomed them
and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,
and He
healed those who needed
healing.
And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve,
and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns
and country round about,
and lodge,
and get
victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
As the day neared its end, the Twelve came to Jesus
and said, “Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding villages
and countryside for
lodging and provisions. For we are in a
desolate place here.”
But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat.
And they said, We have no more but five
loaves and two fishes; except we should go
and buy meat for all this people.
But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.” “We have only five
loaves of bread
and two fish,” they answered, “unless we go
and buy food for all these people.”
For they were about five thousand men.
And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by
fifties in a company.
(There were about five thousand men.) He told His disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
And they did so, and made them all sit down.
Then he took the five
loaves and the two fishes,
and looking up to heaven, he blessed them,
and brake,
and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
Taking the five
loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing
and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples to set before the people.
And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
They all
ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples
picked up twelve
basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
One day as Jesus was praying in private and the disciples were with Him, He questioned them: “Who do the crowds say I am?”
They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say
Elijah;
and still others, that a prophet of old has arisen.”
And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things,
and be rejected of the elders
and chief priests
and scribes,
and be slain,
and be raised the third day.
“The Son of Man must suffer many things,” He said. “He must be rejected by the elders, chief priests,
and scribes,
and He must be killed
and on the third day be raised to life.”
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Then Jesus said to all of them, “If
anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily
and follow Me.
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose or
forfeit his very self?
For
whosoever shall be
ashamed of me
and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be
ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory,
and in his Father’s,
and of the holy angels.
If
anyone is
ashamed of Me
and My words, the Son of Man will be
ashamed of him when He comes in His glory
and in the glory of the Father
and of the holy angels.
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray.
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered,
and his
raiment was white
and glistering.
And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed,
and His clothes became
radiantly white.
And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
Suddenly two men, Moses
and Elijah, began talking with Jesus.
Who appeared in glory,
and spake of his
decease which he should
accomplish at Jerusalem.
They appeared in glory
and spoke about His departure, which He was about to
accomplish at Jerusalem.
But Peter
and they that were with him were heavy with sleep:
and when they were
awake, they saw his glory,
and the two men that stood with him.
Meanwhile Peter
and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they
awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory
and the two men standing with Him.
And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
As Moses
and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses,
and one for
Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared
and enveloped them,
and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen.
Listen to Him!”
And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves,
and in those days they did not tell
anyone what they had seen.
And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
The next day, when they came down from the mountain, Jesus was met by a large crowd.
And, behold, a man of the company
cried out, saying, Master, I
beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
Suddenly a man in the crowd
cried out, “Teacher, I
beg You to look at my son, for he is my only child.
And, lo, a spirit taketh him,
and he suddenly crieth out;
and it teareth him that he foameth again,
and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
A spirit keeps seizing him,
and he screams
abruptly. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It keeps
mauling him
and rarely departs from him.
And I
besought thy disciples to cast him out;
and they could not.
I
begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
And Jesus answering said, O faithless
and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you,
and suffer you? Bring thy son
hither.
“O unbelieving
and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you
and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down,
and tare him.
And Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit,
and healed the child,
and delivered him again to his father.
Even while the boy was approaching, the
demon slammed him to the ground in a
convulsion. But Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit,
healed the boy,
and gave him back to his father.
And they were all
amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
And they were all
astonished at the greatness of God. While
everyone was
marveling at all that Jesus was doing, He said to His disciples,
But they understood not this saying,
and it was
hid from them, that they perceived it not:
and they feared to ask him of that saying.
But they did not understand this statement. It was
veiled from them so that they could not
comprehend it,
and they were afraid to ask Him about it.
And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, had a little child stand beside Him.
And said unto them,
Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me:
and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
And He said to them, “
Whoever welcomes this little child in My name welcomes Me,
and whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me. For
whoever is the least among all of you, he is the greatest.”
And John answered
and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name;
and we
forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name,
and we tried to stop him, because he does not
accompany us.”
And Jesus said unto him,
Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied, “for
whoever is not against you is for you.”
And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he
stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
And sent messengers before his face:
and they went,
and entered into a village of the
Samaritans, to make ready for him.
He sent messengers on
ahead, who went into a village of the
Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.
And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
But the people there refused to
welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.
And when his disciples James
and John saw this, they said, Lord,
wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven,
and consume them, even as Elias did?
When the disciples James
and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to
consume them?”
But he turned,
and rebuked them,
and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
And He and His disciples went on to another village.
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee
whithersoever thou goest.
As they were walking along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go.”
And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go
and bury my father.
Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go
and bury my father.”
Jesus said unto him, Let the dead
bury their dead: but go thou
and preach the kingdom of God.
But Jesus told him, “Let the dead
bury their own dead. You, however, go
and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go
bid them
farewell, which are at home at my house.
Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first let me
bid farewell to my family.”
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the
plough,
and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the
plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also,
and sent them two
and two before his face into every city
and place,
whither he himself would come.
After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others
and sent them two by two
ahead of Him to every town
and place He was about to visit.
Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
And He told them, “The harvest is
plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.
And into
whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’
And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.
And in the same house remain, eating
and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his
hire. Go not from house to house.
Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
And into
whatsoever city ye enter,
and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
If you enter a town
and they
welcome you, eat whatever is set before you.
And heal the sick that are therein,
and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come
nigh unto you.
Heal the sick who are there
and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’
But into
whatsoever city ye enter,
and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same,
and say,
But if you enter a town
and they do not
welcome you, go into the streets
and declare,
Woe unto thee, Chorazin!
woe unto thee,
Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre
and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago
repented, sitting in
sackcloth and ashes.
Woe to you, Chorazin!
Woe to you,
Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre
and Sidon, they would have
repented long ago, sitting in
sackcloth and ashes.
But it shall be more
tolerable for Tyre
and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
But it will be more bearable for Tyre
and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
And you,
Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades!
He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
Whoever listens to you listens to Me;
whoever rejects you rejects Me;
and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
Behold, I give unto you power to
tread on serpents
and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy:
and nothing shall by any means
hurt you.
Behold, I have given you authority to
tread on snakes
and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will
harm you.
In that hour Jesus
rejoiced in spirit,
and said, I
thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven
and earth, that thou hast
hid these things from the wise
and prudent,
and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
At that time Jesus
rejoiced in the Holy Spirit
and declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven
and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise
and learned,
and revealed them to little children.
Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
All things are delivered to me of my Father:
and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father;
and who the Father is, but the Son,
and he to whom the Son will
reveal him.
All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and no one knows who the Father is except the Son
and those to whom the Son chooses to
reveal Him.”
And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
And, behold, a certain
lawyer stood up,
and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?
One day an
expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul,
and with all thy strength,
and with all thy mind;
and thy neighbour as
thyself.
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul
and with all your strength
and with all your mind’
and ‘Love your
neighbor as
yourself.’”
And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”
But he, willing to
justify himself, said unto Jesus,
And who is my neighbour?
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to
Jericho,
and fell among
thieves, which
stripped him of his
raiment,
and wounded him,
and departed, leaving him half dead.
Jesus took up this question
and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to
Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They
stripped him, beat him,
and went away, leaving him half dead.
And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
And likewise a
Levite, when he was at the place, came
and looked on him,
and passed by on the other side.
So too, when a
Levite came to that spot
and saw him, he passed by on the other side.
