Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou
didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou
didst rise and eat bread.
“What is this you have done?” his servants
asked. “While the child was alive, you fasted and
wept, but when he died, you got up and
ate.”
And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son,
lean from day to day?
wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother
Absalom’s sister.
so he
asked Amnon, “Why are you, the son of the king, so depressed morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon replied, “I am in love with Tamar, my brother
Absalom’s sister.”
Then said
Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
“If not,” said
Absalom, “please let my brother Amnon go with us.” “Why should he go with you?” the king
asked.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.
And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king
doth speak this thing as one which is
faulty, in that the king
doth not
fetch home again his banished.
The woman
asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not
convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to
ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king
asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to
ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
And
Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then
Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever
anyone had a
grievance to bring before the king for a decision,
Absalom would call out and
ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The
asses be for the king’s household to
ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be
faint in the wilderness may drink.
“Why do you have these?”
asked the king. Ziba replied, “The
donkeys are for the king’s household to
ride, the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”
And the king said, And where is thy master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said,
Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.
“Where is your master’s grandson?”
asked the king. And Ziba answered, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘
Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my
grandfather.’”
And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him
curse, because the LORD hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the LORD told him, ‘
Curse David,’ who can
ask, ‘Why did you do this?’”
And when
Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the
brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
When
Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they
asked, “Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the
brook,” she replied. The men searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
And the king said, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And
Ahimaaz answered, When
Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I knew not what it was.
The king
asked, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And
Ahimaaz replied, “When
Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I do not know what it was.”
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee
hurt, be as that young man is.
The king
asked the
Cushite, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And the
Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my lord the king and to all who rise up against you to
harm you.”
And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?
And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, who asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”
And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah
stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and bring the king and his household across the Jordan, together with all of David’s men?”
And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou
Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine
handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.
When he had come near to her, the woman
asked, “Are you
Joab?” “I am,” he replied. “
Listen to the words of your servant,” she said. “I am
listening,” he answered.
Then she spake, saying, They were
wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely
ask counsel at
Abel: and so they ended the matter.
Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Seek counsel at
Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled.
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and
wherewith shall I make the
atonement, that ye may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?
So David
asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How can I make
amends so that you may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?”
And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
The Gibeonites said to him, “We need no silver or gold from Saul or his house, nor should you put to death
anyone in Israel for us.” “Whatever you
ask, I will do for you,” he replied.
And Bath-
sheba bowed, and did
obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
And Bathsheba bowed down in
homage to the king, who
asked, “What is your desire?”
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?”
asked Joab.
And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou
peaceably? And he said,
Peaceably.
Now Adonijah son of Haggith went to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, and she
asked, “Do you come in peace?” “
Yes, in peace,” he replied.
And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
So now I have just one request of you; do not deny me.” “State your request,” she told him.
Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not
nay. And the king said unto her,
Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee
nay.
“I have just one small request of you,” she said. “Do not deny me.” “Make your request, my mother,” the king replied, “for I will not deny you.”
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou
ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?
ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for
Abiathar the priest, and for
Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the kingdom for him and for
Abiathar the priest and for
Joab son of Zeruiah!”
In
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said,
Ask what I shall give thee.
One night at
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “
Ask, and I will give it to you!”
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request.
And God said unto him, Because thou hast
asked this thing, and hast not
asked for
thyself long life; neither hast
asked riches for
thyself, nor hast
asked the life of thine enemies; but hast
asked for
thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you have
asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for
yourself or death for your enemies—but you have
asked for
discernment to
administer justice—
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
behold, I will do what you have
asked. I will give you a wise and
discerning heart, so that there has never been nor will ever be another like you.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal.
And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of
Cabul unto this day.
“What are these towns you have given me, my brother?”
asked Hiram, and he called them the Land of
Cabul, as they are called to this day.
And king Solomon gave unto the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she
asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal
bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—whatever she
asked—besides what he had given her out of his royal
bounty. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing:
howbeit let me go in any wise.
But Pharaoh
asked him, “What have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,”
Hadad replied, “but please let me go.”
And king
Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye
advise that I may answer this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he
asked.
And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
He
asked them, “What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.
And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to
ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to
ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
And
Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
“By whom?”
Ahab asked. And the prophet replied, “This is what the LORD says: ‘By the young officers of the district governors.’” “Who will start the battle?”
asked Ahab. “You will,” answered the prophet.
But
Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so
sad, that thou eatest no bread?
Soon his wife
Jezebel came in and
asked, “Why are you so
sullen that you refuse to eat?”
And he said unto
Jehoshaphat,
Wilt thou go with me to battle to
Ramoth-
gilead? And
Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
So he
asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight against
Ramoth-
gilead?”
Jehoshaphat answered the king of Israel, “I am like you, my people are your people, and my horses are your horses.”
Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and
asked them, “Should I go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should I
refrain?” “Go up,” they replied, “and the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
And
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can
ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
So he came to the king. And the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall we
forbear? And he answered him, Go, and
prosper: for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
When Micaiah arrived, the king
asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for the LORD will give it into the hand of the king.”
And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
persuade him.
Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’
asked the LORD.
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron?
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and
ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are on your way to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron?’
And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?
When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why have you returned?”
And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?
The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?”
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha,
Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
“You have requested a difficult thing,” said
Elijah. “Nevertheless, if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours. But if not, then it will not be so.”
And he took the
mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of
Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the waters, they parted
hither and thither: and
Elisha went over.
Then he took the
cloak of
Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters. “Where now is the LORD, the God of
Elijah?” he
asked. And when he had struck the waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and
Elisha crossed over.
And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of
Edom.
Then he
asked, “Which way shall we go up?” “By way of the Desert of
Edom,” replied
Joram.
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may
enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is
Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of
Elijah.
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here? Let us inquire of the LORD through him.” And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “
Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of
Elijah.”
And
Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine
handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
“How can I help you?”
asked Elisha. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house but a
jar of oil.”
And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered,
Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.
So he asked, “Then what should be done for her?” “Well, she has no son,” Gehazi replied, “and her husband is old.”
Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.
Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’” And she answered, “Everything is all right.”
Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not
deceive me?
Then she said, “Did I
ask you for a son, my lord? Didn’t I say, ‘Do not
deceive me?’”
And his
servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
But his servant
asked, “How am I to set twenty
loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’”
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man
doth send unto me to recover a man of his
leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he
tore his clothes and
asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a
leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
So Gehazi followed after
Naaman. And when
Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the
chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?
So Gehazi pursued
Naaman. And when
Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the
chariot to meet him and
asked, “Is everything all right?”
But he went in, and stood before his master. And
Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no
whither.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his master,
Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go
anywhere,” he replied.
And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did
swim.
“Where did it fall?”
asked the man of God. And when he showed him the place, the man of God cut a stick, threw it there, and made the iron
float.
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and
chariots. And his servant said unto him,
Alas, my master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an army with horses and
chariots had surrounded the city. So he
asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I
smite them? shall I
smite them?
And when the king of Israel saw them, he
asked Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to
morrow.
Then the king
asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him, and
tomorrow we will eat my son.’
And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.
When the king asked the woman, she confirmed it. So the king appointed for her an officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers, along with all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the country until now.”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to
ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
And
Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou
wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds
wilt thou set on fire, and their young men
wilt thou
slay with the sword, and
wilt dash their children, and
rip up their women with child.
“Why is my lord
weeping?”
asked Hazael. “Because I know the evil you will do to the Israelites,”
Elisha replied. “You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the sword,
dash their little ones to pieces, and
rip open their
pregnant women.”
So he departed from
Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said
Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.
So
Hazael left
Elisha and went to his master, who
asked him, “What did
Elisha say to you?” And he replied, “He told me that you would surely recover.”
And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an
errand to thee, O captain. And
Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.
and when he arrived, the army commanders were sitting there. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?”
asked Jehu. “For you, commander,” he replied.
Then
Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this
mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
When
Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they
asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this
madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their
babble,” he replied.
And there stood a
watchman on the tower in
Jezreel, and he
spied the company of
Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And
Joram said, Take an
horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?
Now the
watchman standing on the tower in
Jezreel saw
Jehu’s troops approaching, and he called out, “I see a company of troops!” “Choose a rider,”
Joram commanded. “Send him out to meet them and
ask, ‘Have you come in peace?’”
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told, saying, The
messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king
asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
Then he sent out a second on
horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.
So the king sent out a second
horseman, who went to them and said, “This is what the king
asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
And it came to pass, when
Joram saw
Jehu, that he said, Is it peace,
Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother
Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?
And as
Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his master?
And as
Jehu entered the gate, she
asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?”
Jehu met with the brethren of
Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of
Ahaziah; and we go down to
salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
Jehu met some relatives of
Ahaziah king of Judah and
asked, “Who are you?” “We are relatives of
Ahaziah,” they answered, “and we have come down to
greet the sons of the king and of the queen mother.”
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he
saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the
chariot.
When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him.
Jehu greeted him and
asked, “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab replied. “If it is,” said
Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and
Jehu helped him into his
chariot,
And
Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will
heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?
Now
Hezekiah had
asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the LORD will
heal me and that I will go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?”
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and
asked, “Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah
asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king
asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
So Saul died for his
transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for
asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to
enquire of it;
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?
That day David feared God and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?”
Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?
In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever
asked any of the leaders I appointed to
shepherd My people, ‘Why
haven’t you built Me a house of
cedar?’
In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not
asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast
asked long life; but hast
asked wisdom and knowledge for
thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart instead of requesting riches or wealth or glory for
yourself or death for your enemies—and since you have not even requested long life but have
asked for wisdom and knowledge to
govern My people over whom I have made you king—
And king Solomon gave to the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she
asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own land, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—whatever she
asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
And king
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he
asked.
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
He
asked them, “What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
And
Ahab king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat king of Judah,
Wilt thou go with me to
Ramoth-
gilead? And he answered him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.
Ahab king of Israel
asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against
Ramoth-
gilead?” And
Jehoshaphat replied, “I am like you, and my people are your people; we will join you in the war.”
Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king’s hand.
So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, four hundred men, and
asked them, “Should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up,” they replied, “and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can
ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and
prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand.
When Micaiah arrived, the king
asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for they will be given into your hand.”
Then there came out a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
entice him. And the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith?
Then a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’
asked the LORD.
