But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.
And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
And you also must
testify,
because you have been with Me from the beginning.
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
A woman when she is in
travail hath sorrow,
because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the
anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman has pain in
childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her
anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.
Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for
anyone to question You.
Because of this, we believe that You came from God.”
Behold, the hour cometh,
yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone,
because the Father is with me.
“Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
I have given them thy word; and the world hath
hated them,
because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
I have given them Your word and the world has
hated them; for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
And
Judas also, which
betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus
ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
Now
Judas His
betrayer also knew the place,
because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
“We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was
crucified was
nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Many of the Jews read this sign,
because the place where Jesus was
crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
The Jews therefore,
because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,)
besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked
Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.
There laid they Jesus therefore
because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the
sepulchre was
nigh at hand.
And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
“Woman, why are you
weeping?” they asked. “
Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.”
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to
haul it in
because of the great number of fish.
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was
grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply
hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he
tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Because of this, the
rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And when this sound
rang out, a crowd came together in
bewilderment,
because each one heard them speaking his own language.
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death:
because it was not possible that he should be
holden of it.
But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the
agony of death,
because it was impossible for Him to be held in its
clutches.
For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
David says about Him: ‘I saw the Lord always before me;
because He is at my right hand, I will not be
shaken.
Because thou
wilt not leave my soul in
hell, neither
wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
because You will not
abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.
And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now
eventide.
They seized Peter and John, and
because it was evening, they put them in
custody until the next day.
So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might
punish them,
because of the people: for all men
glorified God for that which was done.
After further threats they let them go. They could not find a way to
punish them,
because all the people were
glorifying God for what had happened.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
There were no
needy ones among them,
because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales,
And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a
murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews,
because their widows were neglected in the daily
ministration.
In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the
Grecian Jews among them began to
grumble against the
Hebraic Jews
because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.
And the patriarchs, moved with
envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
Because the patriarchs were
jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
And to him they had regard,
because that of long time he had
bewitched them with
sorceries.
They paid close attention to him
because he had
astounded them for a long time with his
sorcery.
But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
But Peter replied, “May your silver perish with you,
because you thought you could
buy the gift of God with money!
Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
You have no part or share in our ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
How God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and
healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
how God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and
healing all who were
oppressed by the devil,
because God was with Him.
And they of the
circumcision which believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter,
because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
All the
circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were
astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
And
because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of
unleavened bread.)
And seeing that this pleased the Jews, Herod proceeded to seize Peter during the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and
Sidon: but they came with one
accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s
chamberlain their friend, desired peace;
because their country was
nourished by the king’s country.
Now Herod was in a
furious dispute with the people of Tyre and
Sidon, and they
convened before him. Having secured the support of Blastus, the king’s
chamberlain, they asked for peace,
because their region depended on the king’s country for food.
And immediately the angel of the Lord
smote him,
because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Which was with the deputy of the country,
Sergius Paulus, a
prudent man; who called for
Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers,
because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in
condemning him.
The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in
condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.
And they called
Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius,
because he was the chief speaker.
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called
Hermes,
because he was the chief speaker.
But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from
Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
But Paul thought it best not to take him,
because he had deserted them in
Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and
circumcised him
because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
Paul wanted
Timothy to
accompany him, so he took him and
circumcised him on account of the Jews in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Then certain philosophers of the
Epicureans, and of the Stoicks,
encountered him. And some said, What will this
babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a
setter forth of strange gods:
because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Some
Epicurean and
Stoic philosophers also began to
debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this
babbler trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this
because Paul was
proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything,
because He Himself gives
everyone life and breath and everything else.
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;
whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to
everyone by raising Him from the dead.”
And found a certain
Jew named
Aquila, born in
Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife
Priscilla; (
because that
Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
There he found a
Jew named
Aquila, a native of
Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife
Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,
And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers by trade, just as he was.
For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to
hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.
For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city.”
And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go
afoot.
We went on
ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, where we were to take Paul
aboard. He had arranged this
because he was going there on foot.
For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus,
because he would not
spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of
Pentecost.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid
spending time in the province of Asia,
because he was in a
hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of
Pentecost.
And some
cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the
tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle.
Some in the crowd were
shouting one thing, and some another. And since the commander could not get at the truth
because of the
uproar, he ordered that Paul be brought into the
barracks.
And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people.
When Paul reached the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers
because of the violence of the
mob.
And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
Because the brilliance of the light had blinded me, my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.
And saw him saying unto me, Make
haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘
Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly,
because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me.’
Then
straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and
because he had bound him.
Then those who were about to
interrogate Paul
stepped back, and the commander himself was
alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
On the
morrow,
because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole
Sanhedrin to
assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
But when Paul perceived that the one part were
Sadducees, and the other
Pharisees, he
cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a
Pharisee, the son of a
Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Then Paul, knowing that some of them were
Sadducees and others
Pharisees, called out in the
Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a
Pharisee, the son of a
Pharisee. It is
because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”
But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Do not let them
persuade you,
because more than forty men are waiting to
ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now,
awaiting your consent.”
And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to
accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
When Paul had been called in, Tertullus opened the
prosecution: “
Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and your
foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.
You can
verify for
yourself that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
to grant them a
concession against Paul by
summoning him to Jerusalem,
because they were preparing an
ambush to kill him along the way.
And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
Since I was at a loss as to how to
investigate these matters, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges.
I think myself happy, king
Agrippa,
because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things
whereof I am accused of the Jews:
“King
Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you
today to defend myself against all the accusations of the Jews,
Especially
because I know thee to be
expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I
beseech thee to hear me patiently.
especially since you are acquainted with all the Jewish customs and
controversies. I
beg you, therefore, to
listen to me patiently.
And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:
And now I stand on trial because of my hope in the promise that God made to our fathers,
Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king
Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.
the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to
realize as they earnestly serve God day and night. It is
because of this hope, O king, that I am accused by the Jews.
For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
For the king knows about these matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am
confident that none of this has escaped his notice,
because it was not done in a corner.
And when we had
launched from thence, we sailed under
Cyprus,
because the winds were contrary.
After putting out from there, we sailed to the
lee of
Cyprus because the winds were against us.
Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous,
because the fast was now already past, Paul
admonished them,
By now much time had passed, and the voyage had already become dangerous
because it was after the Fast. So Paul
advised them,
And
because the
haven was not
commodious to winter in, the more part
advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an
haven of
Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.
And now I
exhort you to be of good
cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.
But now I
urge you to keep up your courage,
because you will not experience any loss of life, but only of the ship.
Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
So for your own preservation, I
urge you to eat something,
because not a single hair of your head will be lost.”
And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they
kindled a fire, and received us every one,
because of the present rain, and
because of the cold.
The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They
kindled a fire and
welcomed all of us
because it was raining and cold.
Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me.
For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
So for this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”
But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”
First, I
thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
First, I
thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,
because your faith is being proclaimed all over the world.
For I am not
ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the
Jew first, and also to the Greek.
I am not
ashamed of the gospel,
because it is the power of God for salvation to
everyone who believes, first to the
Jew, then to the Greek.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
Because that, when they knew God, they
glorified him not as God, neither were
thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their
foolish heart was
darkened.
Therefore thou art
inexcusable, O man,
whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest
thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
You, therefore, have no
excuse, you who pass judgment on another. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are
condemning yourself,
because you who pass judgment do the same things.
But after thy hardness and
impenitent heart treasurest up unto
thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
But
because of your hard and
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against
yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being
instructed out of the law;
if you know His will and
approve of what is superior
because you are
instructed by the law;
An
instructor of the
foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
For the name of God is
blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
As it is written: “God’s name is
blasphemed among the Gentiles
because of you.”
For he is not a
Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that
circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
A man is not a
Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is
circumcision only outward and physical.
But he is a
Jew, which is one inwardly; and
circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
No, a man is a
Jew because he is one inwardly, and
circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God.
Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
Much in every way. First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God.
Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the
forbearance of God;
Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no
transgression.
because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no
transgression.
Not only that, but we also
rejoice in our sufferings,
because we know that suffering produces
perseverance;
And hope maketh not
ashamed;
because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
And hope does not
disappoint us,
because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.
