Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
Come now therefore, I pray thee,
curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me:
peradventure I shall prevail, that we may
smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I
wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is
cursed.
So please come now and put a
curse on this people,
because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you
bless are blessed, and those you
curse are
cursed.”
And
Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
So
Balaam got up the next morning and said to Balak’s princes, “Go back to your homeland,
because the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”
And God’s anger was
kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an
adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his
ass, and his two servants were with him.
Then God’s anger was
kindled because Balaam was going along, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to
oppose him.
Balaam was riding his
donkey, and his two servants were with him.
And
Balaam said unto the
ass,
Because thou hast
mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
Balaam answered the
donkey, “You have made a
fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou
smitten thine
ass these three times? behold, I went out to
withstand thee,
because thy way is
perverse before me:
The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your
donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to
oppose you,
because your way is
perverse before me.
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an
everlasting priesthood;
because he was
zealous for his God, and made an
atonement for the children of Israel.
It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants,
because he was
zealous for his God and made
atonement for the Israelites.”
For they
vex you with their wiles,
wherewith they have
beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of
Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
For they
assailed you
deceitfully when they
seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came
because of Peor.”
And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
The
registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites,
because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of
Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.
“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among the followers of
Korah who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died
because of his own sin, and he had no sons.
Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons? Give us property among our father’s brothers.”
But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds
wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall
forgive her,
because her father disallowed her.
But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will
absolve her
because her father has prohibited her.
But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I
sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob;
because they have not wholly followed me:
‘
Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I
swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
Save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of
Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.
not one except
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of
Nun—
because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’
But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the
fenced cities
because of the inhabitants of the land.
But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go
ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
For we will not
inherit with them on
yonder side Jordan, or forward;
because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the
slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
because the
manslayer must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may he return to the land he owns.
So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
No inheritance in Israel may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
And ye
murmured in your tents, and said,
Because the LORD
hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us.
You grumbled in your tents and said, “
Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be
annihilated.
Save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath
trodden upon, and to his children,
because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
except
Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land on which he has set foot,
because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly.”
Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a
footbreadth;
because I have given mount
Seir unto
Esau for a possession.
Do not
provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a
footprint,
because I have given Mount
Seir to
Esau as his possession.
And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession;
because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land,
because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
And when thou comest
nigh over against the children of
Ammon, distress them not, nor
meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of
Ammon any possession;
because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
But when you get close to the
Ammonites, do not
harass them or
provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the
Ammonites. I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
This day will I begin to put the
dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall
tremble, and be in
anguish because of thee.
This very day I will begin to put the
dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and
tremble in
anguish because of you.”
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did
because of
Baal-peor: for all the men that followed
Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at
Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all who followed
Baal of Peor.
But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.
For I will not be crossing the Jordan, because I must die in this land. But you shall cross over and take possession of that good land.
And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;
Because He loved your fathers, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt by His presence and great power,
(I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to
shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. And He said:
For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
because they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
But
because the LORD loved you, and
because he would keep the oath which he had
sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of
bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
But
because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He
swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Neither shalt thou bring an
abomination into thine house, lest thou be a
cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly
detest it, and thou shalt utterly
abhor it; for it is a
cursed thing.
And you must not bring any
detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly
detest and
abhor it,
because it is set apart for destruction.
As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish;
because ye would not be
obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD
doth drive them out from before thee.
When the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say in your heart, “Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land.” Rather, the LORD is driving out these nations before you because of their wickedness.
Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart,
dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God
doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
It is not
because of your righteousness or uprightness of heart that you are going in to possess their land, but it is
because of their wickedness that the LORD your God is driving out these nations before you, to keep the promise He
swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water,
because of all your sins which ye
sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. I did not eat bread or drink water
because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and
provoking Him to anger.
Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.
So I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.
Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say,
Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and
because he
hated them, he hath brought them out to
slay them in the wilderness.
Otherwise, those in the land from which You brought us out will say, ‘
Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land He had promised them, and
because He
hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.’
And there ye shall eat before the LORD your God, and ye shall
rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the LORD thy God hath blessed thee.
There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your households shall eat and
rejoice in all you do,
because the LORD your God has blessed you.
When the LORD thy God shall
enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee, and thou shalt say, I will eat flesh,
because thy soul longeth to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh,
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
When the LORD your God expands your territory as He has promised, and you
crave meat and say, “I want to eat meat,” you may eat it whenever you want.
Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.
Only be sure not to eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat.
Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.
Do not eat it, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD.
Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God.
Be careful to obey all these things I command you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every
abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
You must not worship the LORD your God in this way,
because they practice for their gods every
abomination which the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death;
because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of
bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,
because he has advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way in which the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die;
because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage.
Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
When thou shalt
hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.
because you obey the LORD your God, keeping all His commandments I am giving you
today and doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
And the
swine,
because it divideth the
hoof, yet cheweth not the
cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead
carcase.
Although they
chew the
cud, they do not have a divided
hoof. They are unclean for you, as well as the pig; though it has a divided
hoof, it does not
chew the
cud. It is unclean for you. You must not eat its meat or touch its
carcass.
And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
But if the distance is too great for you to carry that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, because the place where the LORD your God will choose to put His Name is too far away,
And the
Levite, (
because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.
Then the
Levite (
because he has no portion or inheritance among you), the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow within your gates may come and eat and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all the work of your hands.
And this is the manner of the release: Every
creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother;
because it is called the LORD’S release.
This is the manner of remission: Every
creditor shall
cancel what he has
loaned to his
neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his
neighbor or brother,
because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed.
Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall greatly
bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it:
There will be no poor among you, however,
because the LORD will surely
bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance,
Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be
grieved when thou givest unto him:
because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be
grieved when you do so. And
because of this the LORD your God will
bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.
And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
But if your servant says to you, ‘I do not want to leave you,’ because he loves you and your household and is well off with you,
It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double
hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all that thou doest.
Do not regard it as a
hardship to set your servant free,
because his six years of service were worth twice the wages of a
hired hand. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all you do.
Observe the month of
Abib, and keep the
passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of
Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.
Observe the month of
Abib and
celebrate the
Passover to the LORD your God,
because in the month of
Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night.
Thou shalt eat no
leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat
unleavened bread
therewith, even the bread of
affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in
haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.
You must not eat
leavened bread with it; for seven days you are to eat with it
unleavened bread, the bread of
affliction,
because you left the land of Egypt in
haste—so that you may remember for the rest of your life the day you left the land of Egypt.
Seven days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD shall choose:
because the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely
rejoice.
For seven days you shall
celebrate a feast to the LORD your God in the place He will choose,
because the LORD your God will
bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that your joy will be complete.
For all that do these things are an
abomination unto the LORD: and
because of these abominations the LORD thy God
doth drive them out from before thee.
For
whoever does these things is
detestable to the LORD. And
because of these
detestable things, the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you.
Lest the
avenger of the blood pursue the
slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him,
because the way is long, and
slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he
hated him not in time past.
Otherwise, the
avenger of blood might pursue the
manslayer in a
rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any
harm.
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts
faint, fear not, and do not
tremble, neither be ye
terrified because of them;
saying to them, “Hear, O Israel,
today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be
fainthearted or afraid; do not be
alarmed or
terrified because of them.
When thou shalt
besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an
axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:
When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an
axe to them,
because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should
besiege them?
And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go
whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make
merchandise of her,
because thou hast humbled her.
And if you are not pleased with her, you are to let her go wherever she wishes. But you must not sell her for money or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise
bury him that day; (for he that is
hanged is
accursed of God;) that thy land be not
defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
you must not leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to
bury him that day,
because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s
curse. You must not
defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
And they shall
amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the
damsel,
because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
They are also to fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father,
because this man has given a virgin of Israel a bad name. And she shall remain his wife; he must not
divorce her as long as he lives.
Then they shall bring out the
damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die:
because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the
whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.
she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house, and there the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an
outrage in Israel by being
promiscuous in her father’s house. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the
damsel,
because she
cried not, being in the city; and the man,
because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
you must take both of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death—the young woman
because she did not cry out in the city, and the man
because he has
violated his
neighbor’s wife. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman,
because she has committed no sin worthy of death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the
damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife;
because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
then the man who lay with her must pay the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she must become his wife
because he has
violated her. He must not
divorce her as long as he lives.
Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and
because they
hired against thee
Balaam the son of Beor of
Pethor of
Mesopotamia, to
curse thee.
For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they
hired Balaam son of Beor from
Pethor in
Aram-naharaim to
curse you.
Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not
hearken unto
Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the
curse into a blessing unto thee,
because the LORD thy God loved thee.
Yet the LORD your God would not
listen to
Balaam, and the LORD your God turned the
curse into a blessing for you,
because the LORD your God loves you.
Thou shalt not
abhor an
Edomite; for he is thy brother: thou shalt not
abhor an Egyptian;
because thou
wast a stranger in his land.
Do not
despise an
Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not
despise an Egyptian,
because you lived as a foreigner in his land.
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
If any man among you becomes unclean
because of a
nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp and stay outside.
Thou shalt not bring the
hire of a
whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any
vow: for even both these are
abomination unto the LORD thy God.
You must not bring the wages of a
prostitute, whether female or male, into the house of the LORD your God to
fulfill any
vow,
because both are
detestable to the LORD your God.
When thou shalt
vow a
vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not
slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.
If you make a
vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to keep it,
because He will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin.
That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a
freewill offering, according as thou hast
vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.
Be careful to follow through on what comes from your lips,
because you have freely
vowed to the LORD your God with your own mouth.
When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes,
because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of
divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him
because he finds some
indecency in her, he may write her a
certificate of
divorce, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.
Do not take a pair of millstones or even an upper
millstone as security for a debt,
because that would be taking one’s
livelihood as security.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset,
because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
Cursed be he that lieth with his father’s wife;
because he uncovereth his father’s
skirt. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he has
violated his father’s marriage bed.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
The LORD shall send upon thee
cursing,
vexation, and
rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly;
because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast
forsaken me.
The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof in all to which you put your hand, until you are destroyed and quickly perish
because of the wickedness you have committed in
forsaking Him.
Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the
locust shall
consume it.
You will
sow much seed in the field but harvest little,
because the locusts will
consume it.
Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them.
You will plant and
cultivate vineyards, but will neither drink the wine nor gather the grapes,
because worms will eat them.
Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not
anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall cast his fruit.
You will have olive trees throughout your territory but will never
anoint yourself with oil,
because the olives will drop off.
Thou shalt
beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity.
You will father sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, because they will go into captivity.
Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the LORD your God and keep the commandments and statutes He gave you.
Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with
joyfulness, and with
gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;
Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and
gladness of heart in all your abundance,
So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat:
because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness,
wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.
refusing to share with any of them the flesh of his children he will eat
because he has nothing left in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within all your gates.
And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness,
wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
the
afterbirth that comes from between her legs and the children she bears,
because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within your gates.
And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.
You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left few in number, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.
In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart
wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’—
because of the
dread in your hearts of the
terrifying sights you will see.
And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this
curse, that he
bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add
drunkenness to
thirst:
because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself, saying, ‘I will have peace, even though I walk in the
stubbornness of my own heart.’ This will bring
disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
Then men shall say,
Because they have
forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:
And the people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.
Then my anger shall be
kindled against them in that day, and I will
forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be
devoured, and many evils and troubles shall
befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us,
because our God is not among us?
On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will
abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will
befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us
because our God is no longer with us?’
And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
And on that day I will surely hide My face because of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods.
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them,
because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt
yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will
befall you in the latter days;
because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.
For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt and turn from the path I have commanded you. And in the days to come,
disaster will
befall you
because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD to
provoke Him to anger by the work of your hands.”
Because I will
publish the name of the LORD:
ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
And when the LORD saw it, he
abhorred them,
because of the
provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.
When the LORD saw this, He rejected them,
provoked to anger by His sons and daughters.
