I should have
been as though I had not
been; I should have
been carried from the
womb to the grave.
If only I had never come to be, but had
been carried from the
womb to the grave.
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the
hypocrite but for a moment?
the triumph of the wicked has
been brief and the joy of the godless
momentary?
Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was
crushed.
If mine heart have
been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
And my heart hath
been secretly
enticed, or my mouth hath
kissed my hand:
so that my heart was secretly
enticed and my hand threw a
kiss from my mouth,
The stranger did not
lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
but no stranger had to
lodge on the street, for my door has
been open to the traveler—
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had
been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they
bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an
earring of gold.
All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and
dined with him in his house. They
consoled him and comforted him over all the
adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.
I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt
bountifully with me.
I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.
I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.
And I have
been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity.
I was cast upon thee from the
womb: thou art my God from my mother’s
belly.
From birth I was cast upon You; from my mother’s
womb You have
been my God.
Remember, O LORD, thy tender
mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have
been ever of old.
Remember, O LORD, Your
compassion and loving devotion, for they are from age to age.
Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast
been my help; leave me not, neither
forsake me, O God of my salvation.
Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger. You have
been my helper; do not leave me or
forsake me, O God of my salvation.
I
behaved myself as though he had
been my friend or brother: I bowed down
heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.
I
paced about as for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one
mourning for his mother.
I have
been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous
forsaken, nor his seed
begging bread.
I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen the righteous abandoned or their children
begging for bread.
An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
“A
vile disease has
been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!”
My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?”
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
I do not
rebuke you for your sacrifices, and your burnt offerings are ever before Me.
When thou sawest a
thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast
been partaker with adulterers.
When you see a
thief, you
befriend him, and throw in your lot with adulterers.
But I will sing of thy power;
yea, I will sing
aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast
been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.
But I will sing of Your strength and
proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast
been displeased; O turn
thyself to us again.
You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us; You have
been angry; restore us!
For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
For You have been my refuge, a tower of strength against the enemy.
Because thou hast
been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I
rejoice.
For You are my help; I will sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings.
Let their table become a
snare before them: and that which should have
been for their
welfare, let it become a
trap.
By thee have I
been holden up from the
womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s
bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
I have
leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my mother’s
womb. My praise is always for You.
For all the day long have I
been plagued, and
chastened every morning.
For I am
afflicted all day long and punished every morning.
It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the
rebuke of thy countenance.
Your vine has
been cut down and burned; they perish at the
rebuke of Your countenance.
LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
You showed favor to Your land, O LORD; You restored Jacob from captivity.
LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations.
But You have
exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; with fine oil I have
been anointed.
Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
Unless the LORD had been my helper, I would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
But the LORD has
been my
stronghold, and my God is my rock of refuge.
The LORD hath
been mindful of us: he will
bless us; he will
bless the house of Israel; he will
bless the house of Aaron.
The LORD is mindful of us; He will
bless us. He will
bless the house of Israel; He will
bless the house of Aaron;
Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt
bountifully with thee.
Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.
They compassed me about like
bees; they are
quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
They
swarmed around me like
bees, but they were
extinguished like burning thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off.
Thy statutes have
been my songs in the house of my
pilgrimage.
Your statutes are songs to me in the house of my
pilgrimage.
It is good for me that I have
been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
It was good for me to be
afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.
Unless thy law had
been my delights, I should then have perished in mine
affliction.
If Your law had not
been my delight, then I would have perished in my
affliction.
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
If the LORD had not been on our side— let Israel now declare—
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us,
Our bones are scattered at the grave’s mouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.
As when one plows and breaks up the soil, so our bones have
been scattered at the mouth of
Sheol.
For the enemy hath
persecuted my soul; he hath
smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have
been long dead.
For the enemy has pursued my soul,
crushing my life to the ground, making me dwell in darkness like those long since dead.
Thou art
snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
if you have
been trapped by the words of your lips, ensnared by the words of your mouth,
For she hath cast down many wounded:
yea, many strong men have
been slain by her.
For she has brought many down to death; her slain are many in number.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there any thing
whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath
been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have
gotten more wisdom than all they that have
been before me in Jerusalem:
yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have grown and increased in wisdom beyond all those before me who were over Jerusalem, and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”
And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished?
That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
What exists has already been, and what will be has already been, for God will call to account what has passed.
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet
been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have
been before them: they also that come after shall not
rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
That which hath
been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he
contend with him that is mightier than he.
Whatever exists was named long ago, and what happens to a man is
foreknown; but he cannot
contend with one stronger than he.
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not
been closed, neither bound up, neither
mollified with
ointment.
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and
festering sores neither
cleansed nor
bandaged nor
soothed with oil.
Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small
remnant, we should have
been as
Sodom, and we should have
been like unto
Gomorrah.
Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors, we would have become like
Sodom, we would have resembled
Gomorrah.
What could have
been done more to my
vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
What more could I have done for My
vineyard than I already did for it? Why, when I expected sweet grapes, did it bring forth
sour fruit?
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the
uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the
bee that is in the land of Assyria.
On that day the LORD will
whistle to the
flies at the
farthest streams of the Nile and to the
bees in the land of Assyria.
The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with
hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.
“The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with finished stone; the sycamores have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.”
For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a
remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea, only a
remnant will return. Destruction has
been decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
Yea, the
fir trees
rejoice at thee, and the cedars of
Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
Thy
pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
Your
pomp has
been brought down to
Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your
blanket.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O
Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which
didst weaken the nations!
How you have fallen from heaven, O day star, son of the
dawn! You have
been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations.
For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the
howling thereof unto Eglaim, and the
howling thereof unto
Beer-elim.
For their outcry
echoes to the border of Moab. Their
wailing reaches Eglaim; it is heard in
Beer-elim.
Yet
gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the
shaking of an olive tree, two or three
berries in the top of the
uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
Yet gleanings will remain, like an olive tree that has
been beaten— two or three
berries atop the tree, four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and failed to remember the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
The LORD hath mingled a
perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to
err in every work thereof, as a
drunken man staggereth in his
vomit.
The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has
been led
astray in all she does, as a
drunkard staggers through his own
vomit.
Be thou
ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I
travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I
nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
Be
ashamed, O
Sidon, the
stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken: “I have not
been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
Howl, ye ships of
Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.
Take an
harp, go about the city, thou
harlot that hast
been forgotten; make sweet
melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
“Take up your
harp,
stroll through the city, O forgotten
harlot. Make sweet
melody, sing many a song, so you will be remembered.”
Therefore hath the
curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are
desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have
been burned, and only a few
survive.
For thou hast
been a strength to the poor, a strength to the
needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.
For You have
been a refuge for the poor, a
stronghold for the
needy in distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the
ruthless is like rain against a wall,
Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her
delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we
been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and
cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We have
been with child, we have
been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
We were with child; we
writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.
For
Tophet is ordained of old;
yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of
brimstone,
doth kindle it.
For Topheth has long
been prepared; it has
been made ready for the king. Its funeral
pyre is deep and wide, with
plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a
torrent of burning sulfur, sets it
ablaze.
The
highways lie waste, the
wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath
despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
The
highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has
been broken, the witnesses are
despised, and human life is disregarded.
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to
Hezekiah, saying,
The writing of
Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had
been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:
This is a writing by
Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:
Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a
shepherd’s tent: I have cut off like a
weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night
wilt thou make an end of me.
My dwelling has
been picked up and removed from me like a
shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a
weaver; He cuts me off from the
loom; from day until night You make an end of me.
At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to
Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had
been sick, and was recovered.
At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to
Hezekiah, for he had heard about
Hezekiah’s illness and recovery.
Speak ye
comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is
pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and
proclaim to her that her forced labor has
been completed; her iniquity has
been pardoned. For she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.”
Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the foundation of the earth?
“I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will
groan like a woman in labor; I will at once
gasp and
pant.
Since thou
wast precious in my sight, thou hast
been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.
Because you are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you and nations in place of your life.
But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast
been weary of me, O Israel.
But you have not called on Me, O Jacob, because you have grown
weary of Me, O Israel.
Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the
remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the
belly, which are carried from the
womb:
“
Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all the
remnant of the house of Israel, who have
been sustained from the
womb, carried along since birth.
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not
been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have
been called a
rebel from birth.
O that thou hadst
hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace
been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:
If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
Thy seed also had
been as the sand, and the offspring of thy
bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have
been cut off nor destroyed from before me.
Your descendants would have
been as countless as the sand, and your offspring as numerous as its grains; their name would never be cut off or
eliminated from My presence.”
Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath
begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am
desolate, a
captive, and removing to and
fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they
been?
Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has
begotten these for me? I was
bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. So who has reared them? Look, I was left all alone, so where did they come from?’”
The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not
rebellious, neither turned away back.
The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not
been rebellious, nor have I turned back.
For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be
ashamed.
Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.
Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for
nought? they that rule over them make them to
howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is
blasphemed.
And now what have I here? declares the LORD. For My people have
been taken without cause; those who rule them
taunt, declares the LORD, and My name is
blasphemed continually all day long.
So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not
been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
so He will
sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see what they have not
been told, and they will understand what they have not heard.
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
And of whom hast thou
been afraid or feared, that thou hast
lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not?
Whom have you
dreaded and feared, so that you
lied and failed to remember Me or take this to heart? Is it not because I have long
been silent that you do not fear Me?
Whereas thou hast
been forsaken and
hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal
excellency, a joy of many generations.
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
Our holy and beautiful temple, where our fathers praised You, has
been burned with fire, and all that was
dear to us lies in ruins.
