For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
For the LORD says, ‘You will not see wind or rain, but the valley will be filled with water, and you will drink—you and your cattle and your animals.’
And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
This is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD, and He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and
smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them:
but they went forward
smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and they fled before them. So the Israelites invaded their land and struck down the Moabites.
And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof;
howbeit the slingers went about it, and
smote it.
They destroyed the cities, and each man threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place,
but men with
slings surrounded it and attacked it as well.
And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too
sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of
Edom:
but they could not.
When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took with him seven hundred
swordsmen to break through to the king of
Edom,
but they could not prevail.
And
Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine
handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
“How can I help you?” asked
Elisha. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house
but a
jar of oil.”
And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another.” But he replied, “There are no more jars.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that
Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
But the woman did conceive, and at that time the next year she gave birth to a son, just as
Elisha had told her.
And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet:
but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away,
but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child;
but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not
awaked.
Gehazi went on
ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy’s face,
but there was no sound or
response. So he went back to meet
Elisha and told him, “The boy has not
awakened.”
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the
pottage, that they
cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.
And they poured it out for the men to eat,
but when they tasted the
stew they
cried out, “There is death in the pot, O man of God!” And they could not eat it.
But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no
harm in the pot.
Then
Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He threw it into the pot and said, “Pour it out for the people to eat.” And there was nothing
harmful in the pot.
And his
servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
But his servant asked, “How am I to set twenty
loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’”
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour,
but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor,
but he was a
leper.
But Naaman was
wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the
leper.
But Naaman went away
angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my
leprosy.
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”
But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.
But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will not accept it.” And although
Naaman urged him to accept it, he refused.
And
Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules’ burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods,
but unto the LORD.
“If you will not,” said
Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much soil as a pair of mules can carry. For your servant will never again make a burnt offering or a sacrifice to any other god
but the LORD.
And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.
“Go in peace,” said
Elisha.
But after
Naaman had traveled a short distance,
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought:
but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
And
Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
But Naaman insisted, “Please, take two talents.” And he urged Gehazi to accept them. Then he
tied up two talents of silver in two bags along with two sets of clothing and gave them to two of his servants, who carried them
ahead of Gehazi.
But he went in, and stood before his master. And
Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no
whither.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his master,
Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go
anywhere,” he replied.
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
But Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the man got down from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?
But as one was felling a beam, the
axe head fell into the water: and he
cried, and said,
Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron
axe head fell into the water. “Oh, my master,” he
cried out, “it was borrowed!”
And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king:
but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy
bedchamber.
But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For
Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your
bedroom.”
And
Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek.
But he led them to Samaria.
And
Elisha told them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are seeking.” And he led them to Samaria.
So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath
hid her son.
So we boiled my son and
ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’
But she had hidden her son.”
But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him:
but ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead,
but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes,
but shalt not eat thereof.
But the officer on whose arm the king
leaned answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “
but you will not eat any of it.”
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
And they rose up in the
twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the
uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
So they arose at
twilight and went to the camp of the Arameans.
But when they came to the outskirts of the camp, there was not a man to be found.
So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man,
but horses
tied, and
asses tied, and the tents as they were.
So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city, saying, “We went to the
Aramean camp and no one was there—not a trace—only
tethered horses and
donkeys, and the tents were
intact.”
And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
But one of his servants replied, “Please, have scouts take five of the horses that remain in the city. Their
plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are
doomed. So let us send them and find out.”
And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he
leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people
trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
Now the king had appointed the officer on whose arm he
leaned to be in charge of the gate,
but the people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died, just as the man of God had
foretold when the king had come to him.
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes,
but you will not eat any of it!”
And
Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover:
howbeit the LORD hath shewed me that he shall surely die.
Elisha answered, “Go and tell him, ‘You will surely recover.’
But the LORD has shown me that in fact he will die.”
And
Hazael said,
But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And
Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
“
But how could your servant, a mere dog, do such a
monstrous thing?” said
Hazael. And
Elisha answered, “The LORD has shown me that you will be king over
Aram.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and
dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and
Hazael reigned in his
stead.
But the next day
Hazael took a thick cloth,
dipped it in water, and spread it over the king’s face. So Ben-
hadad died, and
Hazael reigned in his place.
But king
Joram was returned to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria.) And
Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in
Jezreel.
but King
Joram had returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the Arameans in the battle against
Hazael their king.) So
Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king, then do not let
anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in
Jezreel.”
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told, saying, The
messenger came to them,
but he cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them,
but he is not coming back.”
And the
watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of
Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth
furiously.
Again the
watchman reported, “He reached them,
but he is not coming back. And the
charioteer is driving like
Jehu son of Nimshi—he is driving like a
madman!”
But when
Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And
Jehu followed after him, and said,
Smite him also in the
chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to
Megiddo, and died there.
When King
Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. And
Jehu pursued him,
shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot
Ahaziah in his
chariot on the
Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to
Megiddo and died there.
And they went to
bury her:
but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.
But when they went out to
bury her, they found nothing
but her skull, her feet, and the palms of her hands.
But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
But they were
terrified and reasoned, “If two kings could not stand against him, how can we?”
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I
conspired against my master, and
slew him:
but who
slew all these?
The next morning,
Jehu went out and stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who
conspired against my master and killed him.
But who killed all these?
And
Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them,
Ahab served
Baal a little;
but Jehu shall serve him much.
Then
Jehu brought all the people together and said, “
Ahab served
Baal a little,
but Jehu will serve him a lot.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live.
But Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is missing will not live.”
But Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to destroy the servants of
Baal.
And
Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of
Baal, and said unto the worshippers of
Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD,
but the worshippers of
Baal only.
Next,
Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of
Baal, and
Jehu said to the servants of
Baal, “Look around to see that there are no servants of the LORD here among you—only servants of
Baal.”
Howbeit from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin,
Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden
calves that were in
Bethel, and that were in
Dan.
but he did not turn away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden
calves at
Bethel and
Dan.
But Jehu took no
heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
Yet
Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins that
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
But Jehosheba daughter of King
Joram, the sister of
Ahaziah, took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered. She put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom to hide him from
Athaliah, and he was not killed.
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not removed; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
But it was so, that in the three and
twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.
By the twenty-third year of the reign of
Joash, however, the priests had not yet repaired the damage to the temple.
Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
So King
Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your
constituency,
but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the
lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.
Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its
lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. There the priests who guarded the
threshold put all the money brought into the house of the LORD.
But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired
therewith the house of the LORD.
Instead, it was paid to those doing the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD.
Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of
Jeroboam, who made Israel sin,
but walked therein: and there remained the
grove also in Samaria.)
Nevertheless, they did not turn away from the sins that the house of
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit,
but they continued to walk in them. The Asherah pole even remained standing in Samaria.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed not from all the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin:
but he walked therein.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn away from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit,
but he walked in them.
And the man of God was
wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt
smite Syria
but thrice.
But the man of God was
angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down
Aram until you had put an end to it.
But now you will strike down
Aram only three times.”
And the LORD was
gracious unto them, and had
compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.
But the LORD was
gracious to Israel and had
compassion on them, and He turned toward them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And to this day, the LORD has been unwilling to destroy them or cast them from His presence.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as
Joash his father did.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,
but not as his father David had done. He did everything as his father
Joash had done.
But the children of the murderers he
slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers;
but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to
Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The
thistle that was in
Lebanon sent to the
cedar that was in
Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in
Lebanon, and
trode down the
thistle.
But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and
Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
But Amaziah would not
listen, and Jehoash king of Israel advanced. He and King
Amaziah of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh in Judah.
And conspirators
plotted against
Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish.
But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him there.
And the LORD said not that he would
blot out the name of Israel from under heaven:
but he saved them by the hand of
Jeroboam the son of
Joash.
and since the LORD had said that He would not
blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, He saved them by the hand of
Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
But Pekah the son of Remaliah, a captain of his,
conspired against him, and
smote him in Samaria, in the palace of the king’s house, with
Argob and Arieh, and with him fifty men of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and reigned in his room.
Then his officer, Pekah son of Remaliah,
conspired against him along with
Argob, Arieh, and fifty men of
Gilead. And at the citadel of the king’s palace in Samaria, Pekah struck down and killed Pekahiah and reigned in his place.
But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel,
yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel.
Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged
Ahaz,
but could not overcome him.
Then Rezin king of
Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to
wage war against Jerusalem. They besieged
Ahaz but could not overcome him.
And king
Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and
sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the
brasen altar shall be for me to
enquire by.
Then King
Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land.
Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices.
But I will use the bronze altar to seek guidance.”
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
And the king of Assyria found
conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea had
conspired to send envoys to King So of Egypt, and that he had not paid tribute to the king of Assyria as in previous years. Therefore the king of Assyria arrested Hoshea and put him in prison.
Notwithstanding they would not hear,
but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.
But they would not
listen, and they
stiffened their necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their God.
Therefore the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left
but the tribe of Judah only.
So the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained,
Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
and even Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but lived according to the customs Israel had introduced.
So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.
So the new residents worshiped the LORD, but they also appointed for themselves priests of all sorts to serve in the shrines of the high places.
They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods according to the customs of the nations from which they had been carried away.
But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
Instead, worship the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him and offer sacrifices to Him.
But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
but worship the LORD your God, and He will deliver you from the hands of all your enemies.”
So these nations feared the LORD, and served their
graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.
So these nations worshiped the LORD but also served their idols, and to this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their fathers did.
For he
clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him,
but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from following Him; he kept the commandments that the LORD had given Moses.
Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God,
but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
This happened because they did not
listen to the voice of the LORD their God,
but violated His covenant—all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded—and would neither
listen nor obey.
Thou sayest, (
but they are
but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom
dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
You claim to have a
strategy and strength for war,
but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and
hearken not unto
Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die.
But do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for he misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and
blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth,
but there is no strength to deliver them.
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy
rage against me.
But I know your sitting down, your going out and coming in, and your
raging against Me.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same.
But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
And
Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees:
nay,
but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.
“It is easy for the shadow to
lengthen ten steps,” answered
Hezekiah, “
but not for it to go back ten steps.”
Then said
Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?
But Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Will there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?”
But they
hearkened not: and
Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.
But the people did not
listen and
Manasseh led them
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
And the people of the land
slew all them that had
conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made
Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they made his son
Josiah king in his place.
Howbeit there was no
reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.
But they need not account for the money put into their hands, since they work with
integrity.”
