And the Spirit of the LORD
came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD
came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and
came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s
carcass.
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
And when the Philistines saw him, they selected thirty men to
accompany him.
And he said unto them, Out of the eater
came forth meat, and out of the strong
came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days
expound the
riddle.
So he said to them: “Out of the eater
came something to eat, and out of the strong
came something sweet.” For three days they were unable to explain the
riddle.
And it
came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but
hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife
came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You have
posed to my people a
riddle, but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it
came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her the answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
And the Spirit of the LORD
came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD
came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
But it
came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines
came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.
Then the Philistines went up,
camped in Judah, and
deployed themselves near the town of Lehi.
And when he
came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD
came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines
came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD
came mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
And it
came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there
came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit
came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water
came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And it
came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
Some time later,
Samson fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
And the lords of the Philistines
came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
And it
came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines
came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines
came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And it
came to pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they set him between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
Then his brethren and all the house of his father
came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family
came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to
sojourn where he could find a place: and he
came to mount Ephraim to the house of
Micah, as he journeyed.
This man left the city of
Bethlehem in Judah to settle where he could find a place. And as he traveled, he
came to
Micah’s house in the hill country of Ephraim.
And the children of
Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to
spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they
came to mount Ephraim, to the house of
Micah, they
lodged there.
So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of
valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to
spy out the land and
explore it. “Go and
explore the land,” they told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and
came to the house of
Micah, where they spent the night.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and
came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
When the men returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, “What did you find?”
And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-
dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
They went up and
camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-
dan to this day.
And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and
came unto the house of
Micah.
And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and
came to
Micah’s house.
So they turned aside there and went to the home of the young
Levite, the house of
Micah, and
greeted him.
And the five men that went to
spy out the land went up, and
came in thither, and took the
graven image, and the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
And the five men who had gone to
spy out the land went inside and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.
And they took the things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and
came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
And it
came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And it
came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
But the man would not
tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and
came over against
Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two
asses saddled, his
concubine also was with him.
But the man was unwilling to
spend the night. He got up and departed, and arrived opposite
Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two
saddled donkeys and his
concubine.
And, behold, there
came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he
sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was residing in Gibeah (the men of that place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the field.
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that
came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
Then
came the woman in the
dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
Early that morning, the woman went back to the house where her master was staying,
collapsed at the
doorway, and lay there until it was light.
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites
came out of the land of Egypt until this day. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, with the land of
Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.
Then all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at
Mizpah.
And the
Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I
came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my
concubine, to
lodge.
So the
Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered: “I and my
concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to
spend the night.
But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
And from their cities they came together at Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites.
And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and
encamped against Gibeah.
The next morning the Israelites set out and camped near Gibeah.
And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
And the Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down 22,000 Israelites on the battlefield that day.
And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
On the second day the Israelites advanced against the Benjamites.
And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and
came unto the house of God, and
wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites
came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in
array at
Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel
came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
So all the men of Israel got up from their places and
arrayed themselves at
Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in
ambush charged from their positions west of Gibeah.
And there
came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was
sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Then 10,000 select men from all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was upon them.
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that
came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they
came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the people
came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and
wept sore;
So the people
came to
Bethel and sat there before God until evening, lifting up their voices and
weeping bitterly.
And it
came to pass on the
morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
The next day the people got up early, built an altar there, and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that
came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there
came none to the
camp from
Jabesh-
gilead to the assembly.
So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from
Jabesh-
gilead had come to the
camp for the assembly.
And they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the
camp to
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan.
So they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man, and they brought them to the
camp at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan.
And Benjamin
came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of
Jabesh-
gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were
spared from
Jabesh-
gilead. But there were not enough women for all of them.
Now it
came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to
sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from
Bethlehem in Judah, with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the land of Moab.
And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife
Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they
came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was
Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from
Bethlehem in Judah, and they entered the land of Moab and settled there.
So they two went until they
came to
Bethlehem. And it
came to pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
So
Naomi returned, and
Ruth the
Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they
came to
Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
So
Naomi returned from the land of Moab with her daughter-in-law
Ruth the
Moabitess. And they arrived in
Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
And she went, and
came, and
gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her
hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
So
Ruth departed and went out into the field and
gleaned after the harvesters. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
And behold, Boaz
came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they replied.
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that
came back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And she said, I pray you, let me
glean and gather after the reapers among the
sheaves: so she
came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she
tarried a little in the house.
She has said, ‘Please let me
glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she
came out and has continued from morning until now, except that she rested a short time in the shelter.”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
And when Boaz had eaten and
drunk, and his heart was
merry, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of corn: and she
came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of grain. Then
Ruth went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
And it
came to pass at
midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
At
midnight, Boaz was
startled, turned over, and there lying at his feet was a woman!
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So she lay down at his feet until morning, but she got up before
anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that a woman
came to the
threshing floor.”
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
When
Ruth returned to her mother-in-law,
Naomi asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then
Ruth told her all that Boaz had done for her.
Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the
kinsman of whom Boaz spake
came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.
Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there. Soon the
kinsman-
redeemer of whom he had spoken
came along, and Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
And it
came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and
came to their house to
Ramah: and Elkanah knew
Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
The next morning Elkanah and
Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the LORD, and then returned home to
Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with his wife
Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
Wherefore it
came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant
came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that
came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who
came to
Shiloh.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant
came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And there
came a man of God unto
Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
Then a man of God
came to
Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
And it
came to pass at that time, when
Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax
dim, that he could not see;
And at that time
Eli, whose
eyesight had grown so
dim that he could not see, was lying in his room.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD
came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
Thus the word of Samuel
came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and
camped at
Ebenezer, while the Philistines
camped at Aphek.
And when the people were come into the
camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD
smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us
fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of
Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
When the troops returned to the
camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines
today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD
came into the
camp, all Israel
shouted with a great
shout, so that the earth
rang again.
When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the
camp, all the Israelites raised such a great
shout that it
shook the ground.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the
shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great
shout in the
camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the
camp.
On hearing the noise of the
shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud
shouting in the
camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the
camp,
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the
camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their
camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and
came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his head.
And when he
came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man
came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult? And the man
came in
hastily, and told
Eli.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that
came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And it
came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains
came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it
came to pass, as the ark of God
came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
And the
cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-
shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they
clave the wood of the
cart, and offered the
kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.
The
cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there near a large rock. The people
chopped up the
cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
And the men of Kirjath-jearim
came, and brought up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and
sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
Then the men of Kiriath-jearim
came for the ark of the LORD and took it into Abinadab’s house on the hill. And they consecrated his son
Eleazar to guard the ark of the LORD.
And it
came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and
smote them, until they
came under Beth-
car.
Then the men of Israel charged out of
Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, striking them down all the way to an area below Beth-
car.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped
invading the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and
came to Samuel unto
Ramah,
So all the elders of Israel gathered together and
came to Samuel at
Ramah.
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now, for he
came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they answered. “
Hurry now, for
today he has come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high place.
