And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:
The LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never
downward, if you hear and carefully follow the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am giving you
today.
The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
The LORD will turn the rain of your land into dust and powder; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed.
The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.
The foreigner living among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink down lower and lower.
The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;
The LORD will bring a nation from
afar, from the ends of the earth, to
swoop down upon you like an eagle—a nation whose language you will not understand,
And he shall
besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and
fenced walls come
down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall
besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
They will
besiege all the cities throughout your land, until the high and fortified walls in which you trust have fallen. They will
besiege all your cities throughout the land that the LORD your God has given you.
But if thine heart turn away, so that thou
wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
But if your heart turns away and you do not
listen, but are drawn away to bow
down to other gods and worship them,
And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.
So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.
Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Now therefore, write
down for
yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites; have them
recite it, so that it may be a witness for Me against them.
Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.
So that very day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites.
Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat
down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
Surely You love the people; all the holy ones are in Your hand, and they sit down at Your feet; each receives Your words—
And of
Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth
Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.
Concerning
Gad he said: “Blessed is he who enlarges the
domain of
Gad! He lies
down like a lion and tears off an arm or a head.
Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop
down dew.
So Israel dwells securely; the fountain of Jacob lives untroubled in a land of grain and new wine, where even the heavens
drip with
dew.
From the wilderness and this
Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the
Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going
down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and
Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the
Hittites—and west as far as the Great Sea.
And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
Before the
spies lay
down for the night,
Rahab went up on the roof
Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
Then
Rahab let them
down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the wall of the city.
Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou
didst let us
down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
unless, when we enter the land, you have
tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us
down, and unless you have brought your father and mother and brothers and all your family into your house.
So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of
Nun, and told him all things that
befell them:
Then the two men started back, came
down from the hill country, and crossed the river. So they came to Joshua son of
Nun and reported all that had happened to them.
And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come
down from above; and they shall stand upon an
heap.
When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—touch
down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing waters will be cut off and will stand up in a
heap.”
That the waters which came
down from above stood and rose up upon an
heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came
down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against
Jericho.
the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far
upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite
Jericho.
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them
down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them
down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the wall of the city shall fall
down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a great
shout, that the wall fell
down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great
shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going
down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck
down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them
down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the
ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and
slew the men of
Ai.
When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in
ambush had captured the city and that smoke was rising from it, they turned around and struck
down the men of
Ai.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them
down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was
down, Joshua commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take
down the body from the tree and throw it
down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
And the LORD
discomfited them before Israel, and
slew them with a great slaughter at
Gibeon, and
chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and
smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at
Gibeon, pursued them along the
ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them
down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going
down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast
down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go
down about a whole day.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took
vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of
Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going
down about a full day.”
And afterward Joshua
smote them, and
slew them, and
hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees and left them there until evening.
And it came to pass at the time of the going
down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them
down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken
down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him
down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who
smote them, and
chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-
maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left them none remaining.
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them
down and pursued them all the way to Greater
Sidon and Misrephoth-
maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them
down, leaving no survivors.
And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and Joshua burned
down Hazor itself.
Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir, even unto
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon under mount
Hermon: and all their kings he took, and
smote them, and
slew them.
from Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir, as far as
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon at the foot of Mount
Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them
down, putting them to death.
Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel
smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river
Arnon unto mount
Hermon, and all the plain on the east:
Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites struck
down and whose lands they took beyond the Jordan to the east, from the
Arnon Valley to Mount
Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:
Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel
smite: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh.
Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the Israelites had struck them
down and given their land as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh.
All the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, which reigned in
Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the
remnant of the giants: for these did Moses
smite, and cast them out.
the whole kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, who had reigned in
Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a
remnant of the
Rephaim. Moses had struck them
down and dispossessed them,
And the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount
Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went
down to Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah:
The border
curled westward from Baalah to Mount
Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), went
down to Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes
down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And goeth
down westward to the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast of Beth-horon the
nether, and to
Gezer: and the goings out thereof are at the sea.
Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites as far as the border of Lower Beth-horon and on to
Gezer, and it ended at the Sea.
And it went
down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to
Jericho, and went out at Jordan.
From Janoah it went
down to Ataroth and Naarah, and then reached
Jericho and came out at the Jordan.
And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut
down for
thyself there in the land of the
Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people that the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for
yourself an area in the land of the
Perizzites and the
Rephaim.”
But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it
down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the
Canaanites, though they have iron
chariots, and though they be strong.
because the hill country will be yours as well. It is a forest; clear it, and its
farthest limits will be yours. Although the
Canaanites have iron
chariots and although they are strong, you can drive them out.”
And the border went over from thence toward
Luz, to the side of
Luz, which is
Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-
adar, near the hill that lieth on the south side of the
nether Beth-horon.
From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of
Luz (that is,
Bethel) and went
down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
And the border came
down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of
Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,
Then it went
down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of
Hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim and ran
down the Valley of
Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and
downward to En-rogel.
And was drawn from the north, and went forth to En-shemesh, and went forth toward Geliloth, which is over against the going up of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan the son of
Reuben,
From there it curved northward and proceeded to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth facing the
Ascent of Adummim, and continued
down to the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward, and went down unto Arabah:
Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah and went down into the valley.
That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow
down to them.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed
yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow
down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and
Esau: and I gave unto
Esau mount
Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went
down into Egypt.
and to Isaac I gave Jacob and
Esau. I gave
Esau Mount
Seir to possess, but Jacob and his sons went
down to Egypt.
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites into their hand: and they
slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
When Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and
Perizzites into their hands, and they struck
down ten thousand men at Bezek.
And there they found Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking
down the
Canaanites and
Perizzites.
And afterward the children of Judah went
down to fight against the
Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Afterward, the men of Judah marched
down to fight against the
Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.
And Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they
slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against the
Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck
down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To the man who strikes
down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And the
Amorites forced the children of
Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come
down to the valley:
The
Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to come
down into the plain.
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall
tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed
down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed
down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow
down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow
down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid
down for their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
And they
tarried till they were
ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen
down dead on the earth.
So they waited until they became
worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they took the key and opened the doors—and there was their lord lying dead on the floor.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went
down with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came
down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him
down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And they
slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all
lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
At that time they struck
down about ten thousand Moabites, all
robust and
valiant men. Not one of them escaped.
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which
slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox
goad: and he also delivered Israel.
After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking
down six hundred Philistines with an
oxgoad.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went
down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came
down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted
down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
LORD, when thou wentest out of
Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of
Edom, the earth
trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.
O LORD, when You went out from
Seir, when You marched from the land of
Edom, the earth
trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured
down water.
They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they
rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go
down to the gates.
the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.
Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty.
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came
down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came
down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
The river of
Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river
Kishon. O my soul, thou hast
trodden down strength.
The River
Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the River
Kishon. March on, O my soul, in strength!
At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.
And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that
pertained unto
Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son
Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat
down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to
Joash the Abiezrite, where his son
Gideon was
threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites.
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt
smite the Midianites as one man.
“Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw
down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut
down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut
down the Asherah pole beside it.
And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second
bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the
grove which thou shalt cut
down.
Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God on the top of this
stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut
down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of
Baal was cast
down, and the
grove was cut
down that was by it, and the second
bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
When the men of the city got up in the morning, there was
Baal’s altar
torn down, with the Asherah pole cut
down beside it and the second bull offered up on the newly built altar.
Then the men of the city said unto
Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast
down the altar of
Baal, and because he hath cut
down the
grove that was by it.
Then the men of the city said to
Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he has
torn down Baal’s altar and cut
down the Asherah pole beside it.”
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast
down his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown
down his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down Baal’s altar.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them
down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of
whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them
down to the water, and I will
sift them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go. But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
So he brought
down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth
down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people
down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed
down upon their knees to drink water.
And the number of those who
lapped the water with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others
knelt to drink.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go
down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.
But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
But if you are afraid to do so, then go down to the camp with your servant Purah
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come
down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come
down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
So
Gideon told the men of Penuel, “When I return in triumph, I will
tear down this tower!”
And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even
threescore and seventeen men.
There he captured a young man of Succoth and
interrogated him. The young man wrote
down for him the names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Succoth.
And he beat
down the tower of Penuel, and
slew the men of the city.
He also pulled down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.

Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
Then Gaal spoke up again, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak.”
And
Abimelech, and the company that was with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies with him
rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies
rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them
down.
And
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and
slew the people that was therein, and beat
down the city, and
sowed it with salt.
And all that day
Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he
demolished the city and
sowed it with salt.
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his hand, and cut
down a
bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
